UHF died almost immediately in the box office. Well, most average movies died against the powerhouse that was the blockbusters of the summer of 1989 (Ghostbusters II, Batman, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Do the Right Thing). However, sometimes overlooked movies are the best. Now, this movie is definitely not better than any of the aforementioned movies, but it still has its qualities every moviegoer can appreciate (mainly stupidity). This movie tells the story of George Newman (“Weird Al” Yankovic) and his troubles maintaining a job due to his overactive imagination. However, through a great stroke of luck, he is given control of a local, practically bankrupt UHF station. From here, the movie reaches levels of stupidity only achieved by films such as Dumb and Dumber. However, luckily for the viewers, it isn’t the kind of disgusting stupidity that modern moviegoers are used to due to atrocities such as Scary Movie and Freddy Got Fingered (which shall now be called “the worst movie ever made”). This has a combination of pure slapstick and cheep humor as seen in many 80’s movies. This also has the appearance of some mostly undiscovered talent (at the time), such as Fran Drescher, Emo Philips, Victoria Jackson, and Michael Richards in his first movie. It definitely isn’t an excellent movie, but it definitely is worth at least renting once, when you’re in the mood for stupidity. |
