SEASON RECAP- The Beginning
Founding Father Phil True began the Kennebec Valley Fantasy League back in 1989. Using one of the Miller Lite schedule books describing a scoring method for fantasy football, True gathered up five others to join. Lyn Thompson was a friend of his from his youth. Rick Louten and Dave St. Hilaire were fellow co-workers, Scott Lanpher his brother in-law and Danny Veilleux was a softball buddy. The rosters would be comprised of four quarterbacks, four running backs, four receivers (tight ends and/or wide receivers), two kickers and a defense.

Five of the members (Veilleux was never seen at any KVFL functions and left a written list of his players to be drafted with True) met at True's house in Augusta, Maine on an August Saturday afternoon for the initial draft. The draft order was determined by pulling numbers or names out of a hat. Team St. Hilaire (back then the teams were identified by the last names of the owners) was awarded the first pick overall and used it on QB Dan Marino. The draft order was in "snake order" of one through six for round #1, six through one for the second round and so forth. There were a total of 14 rounds with another round set aside for selecting a defense.

Unfortunately, most of the records of the historic first draft are lost, but maybe not forever. There's a small chance the notebook Dave utilized to record the entire draft may be hidden somewhere in his attic. Dave did use the #12 and #13 picks on RB Herschel Walker and WR Jerry Rice. Lyn, however, did save his draft order which looked like this, round by round. There were no trades involving draft picks that day...#1 QB Boomer Esiason; #2 RB Eric Dickerson; #3 WR Rickey Sanders; #4 RB Greg Bell; #5 Tony Eason; #6 WR Henry Ellard; #7 K Morten Andersen; #8 WR Mark Clayton; #9 RB Mike Rozier; #10 QB Bubby Brister; #11 WR Bruce Hill; #12 QB Vinny Testeverde; #13 K Tony Zendejas; #14 RB Eric Metcalf

With Veilleux not being there for the all-important initial draft, his roster was by far the weakest of the six franchises and his team never recovered. His first round pick ended up being new San Diego Charger QB Jim McMahon. McMahon lasted just 12 weeks in San Diego, throwing only 10 TDs in that time. He would play in the NFL through the 1996 season and would total just 23 more TD passes over that period. Veilleux's highest weekly finish would be third place which he registered only once. He would turn in three fourth-place finishes with the rest all being below that. He would be gone at the end of the season with his franchise being turned over to new ownership.

The season was an exciting one with the top four teams seperated by just 27 points heading into Week #16. Team Thompson entered that final weekend with a 13-point cushion over second-place Team Lanpher with Team True (22 points back) and Team St. Hilaire (27 points behind) scrambling to move up the rankings. Team St. Hilaire would score 71 points that weekend and turn in the highest weekly point total for the season. With just the Monday night tilt between the Bengals and Vikings remaining, Team St. Hilaire trailed by just five points. With St. Hilaire's K Rich Karlis connecting on five first-half field goals and Thompson QB Esiason hitting a touchdown before intermission, Team St. Hilaire had surged ahead by a 674-669 margin at the half. But Esiason tossed a pair of TDs in the second half while Karlis was limited to just a PAT as Team Thompson captured a thrilling victory to cap the initial KVFL season.

SEASON RECAP- Thompson Goes Back to Back
The KVFL saw its first expansion as well as its first controversies in 1990. Gone was Danny Veilleux, who may have assembled the worst one-season team in KVFL history. Taking Veilleux's place was the short-lived combination of Bruce Abbott and Todd Bullen who both worked with St. Hilaire in Farmington. Bullen showed up on draft day and was not seen again, leaving Abbott as the sole owner. Also new were the two expansion team owners, Steve Taber and Anthony St. Thomas. Taber was a classmate of Thompson and True and had since moved to Arizona while St. Thomas' connection was being a cousin of Thompson's wife. These three owners lasted just a few seasons, but each left their mark on the league. St. Thomas will forever go down in the KVFL annuals for his actions on two separate occasions for which he could never be forgiven. First, he showed up for a supplemental draft and actually asked to have the television channel switched to check on a Winston Cup race. His second misfortune came at one of St. Hilaire's Super Bowl parties when we he showed up drinking wine coolers instead of beer.

The league's initial controversy came on draft day. With teams protecting a portion of their roster at each position, St. Hilaire traded away some key players instead of taking the risk of losing them. With those trades, he secured three of the first six regular draft picks and had his eyes on QB Chris Miller, the best quarterback not currently on a KVFL roster, and rookie RB Rodney Hampton. Meanwhile, Thompson had unloaded the back half of his roster and picked up seven of the top 12 picks in the expansion pool draft with most of the picks coming from St. Thomas. Taber had the first expansion pick and took...Miller, the top QB. St. Hilaire immediately cried "foul", saying the expansion picks were only to be used on rostered players, not the available ones and rookies. After much debate, St. Hilaire's protest was over ruled. Thompson, who would over time show to have a great deal of infatuation with rookies (only strippers grab his attention more) used his picks wisely. He selected the top rookie QB in Jeff George along with the top two rookie RBs (Hampton and Blair Thomas). He also went for the top TE (a new position on KVFL rosters in 1990) by grabbing Rodney Holman before selecting the top kicker in Chip Lohmiller.

With the regular draft now depleted, the Abbott/Bullen franchise was forced to select TE Mark Bavaro. Other notable picks included WR Shawn Collins who went to Louten in the first round. Collins would be the first of a string of bad draft picks by the future Cap City franchise. Over the next three seasons, Louten drafted four more players in the first round and none of them panned out for him. One of Louten's 1991 first rounders came in a 1990 trade with True for K Pete Stoyanovich, the first and last time a kicker was peddled for a first round pick in the regular draft. The steal of the draft was made by True. He had the final pick of the fourth round and used the selection to take QB Steve Young, who would pay huge dividends down the road for him.

The race for the cup belonged to True throughout much of the season. The first six weeks saw top three finishes by True and he led for 14 of the 17 weeks. St. Hilaire was also in the hunt despite never holding down the top overal spot at any point in the season and bouncing between second and fourth place all year long. Louten battled his way into the first division even after releasing RB Thurman Thomas during the season and making an ill-advised trade to acquire over-the-hill WR Roy Green by sending WR Sterling Sharpe away in the deal. Louten was also poked fun at after activating QB Randall Cunningham in week #5. Back up Bernie Kosar tossed three touchdowns that week, while Cunningham...watched the games on TV during his bye week.

The second controversy came late in 1990 after Taber traded Miller to Thompson prior to week #13. Louten, True and St. Hilaire were opposed to the trade, feeling that Thompson was being helped by his Arizona connection. Miller subsequently went down...and out for the year in the first quarter of his initial game for Thompson. The real rub came when Miller was quickly dispatched back to Taber soon after the injury. This trade would result with the creation of the first "Lyn" rule which would be passed at the 1991 league meeting on draft day. The new by-law would state a player traded after Thanksgiving could not be traded back to the same team for one calendar year.

The race was tight down to the end. With True clinging to his lead, his team shot blanks the final two weeks of the season, scoring just 14 and 15 points respectively over those weeks. After ripping through the league early, those two totals placed him dead last in each of the weeks. Not only did True not win the league after leading for much of the season, he had to fend off a hard-charging Louten by defeating him in a final week tie-breaker, the first for the league, and had to settle for third place. True's top two tie breakers were RB Marcus Dupree, who was held without a point and QB Steve Young who scored 12 points. Louten's top two tie breakers were QB Steve DeBerg and RB Cleveland Gary who were both kept out of the end zone.
Thompson, who would lead the league with 3½ weekly victories, was flawless down the stretch. He missed just one running back touchdown over the final five weeks of the season and received points from up and down his roster to best runner-up St. Hilaire for the second year in a row, this time by a 696-671 margin. Thompson's back-to-back Cup wins cemented his franchise as the league's best in the early stages of the KVFL. The 1990 Championship, however, would also be his last.
