Review: Cheaper by the Dozen

by Jake Sproul

Grade: C+

Steve Martin plays Tom Baker, dad to twelve children whose ages span a decade or two. When mom (played by Bonnie Hunt) leaves on a book tour, Tom must hold down the house while trying to hold onto his new job. Hoping to capture the same warm fuzzies that laced this summer’s Freaky Friday, Cheaper by the Dozen never quite matches the former. On the plus side, Dozen does have enough entertaining (albeit contrived) scenes to entertain kids and not completely insult the intelligence of the parents accompanying them. (BAD DIALOGUE ALERT: [spoken by Hilary Duff to her personality-opposite sister, played by Alyson Stoner] “We may fight everyday, but I would fight for you any day.” GAG ME!)
