Review: Matchstick Men

by Jake Sproul

Grade: B-

Technically, Ridley Scott has crafted a quality film. Why do I say technically? Because technically, the movie doesn’t feel right to me. The film’s “surprise ending” destroys the entire warm aura (for lack of a better word) that the movie had been building for the first 80 minutes. I won’t spoil the ending of the movie, but I will say that I was hoping for and frankly expecting a touching dysfunctional family dramedy centering around con men, and I didn’t get. On a positive note though, the performances of Nicolas Cage, Sam Rockwell, and Allison Lohman are dead on, and worthy of Oscar nominations.
