Review: School of Rock

by Jake Sproul

Grade: D

This is a disappointing movie which is low on entertainment and laughs, and high on filler and stock characters and situations. Jack Black has gained popularity and a huge fan base by playing comic relief, most notably in High Fidelity. In School of Rock though, his one-note performance begins to grate the nerves. Jack Black isn’t the only problem, the script is brainless. Characters are underdeveloped (the closest thing we see to character growth in Joan Cusak’s character saying “nobody likes me”), the dialogue is tired, the plot is endlessly predictable, and the list goes on. This is just proof the not all supporting actors can cut it as leading actors. Will Farrell, watch your back.
