Review: Something's Gotta Give

by Jake Sproul

Grade: B+

Despite the terribly unoriginal title, Something’s Gotta Give is a surprisingly smart and funny romantic comedy, featuring a fantastic performance by Diane Keaton. Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson) is a 63 year old playboy, who proudly displays his bachelorhood and 20-something year old girlfriends. When he suffers chest pains at one such 20-something’s house, its up to her mom Erica (Diane Keaton) to nurse him back to health. Harry begins to fall for Erica and all her neuroses, but Harry may have some competition for Erica’s affections in the form of a young doctor, played by Keanu Reeves. Although the plot isn’t terribly original as far as romantic comedies go, the dialogue crackles with comedy. Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson are fantastic together, and have some of the best on-screen chemistry I have seen in a while. Aside from the under whelming plot, at two hours, the film feels a hair long. Overall though, this is a fantastic entry into a genre rife with mediocre-at-best efforts.
