SOME
WORDS YOU WILL HEAR IN REFERENCE TO THE SOUTH.
Alligator pear: Avocado.
Brown Turkey Figs: Favored fig in
North Florida for perserves and fig cakes.
Cast Iron Skillet: Preferred cooking
pans for Southern-style foods.
Conch: large snail-like sea creature
found in waters of the Florida Keys and islands, popular
in fritters and salads.
Cooter: Local name for fresh water
turtles,soft-shell and alligator turtles.
Crackers: Early North Florida settlers.
Cracker cattle: a breed of cows
brought to the New World by the Spanish in the 1500's.
Datil Pepper: Small fiery peppers
grown around St. Johns County. Most popular in pepper sauce.
Gator tail: meat from the tail section
of the alligator.
Gophers: land tortoises and those
things my momma said for me not to bring home anymore cause
the was endangered now.
Greens: collards, turnips, mustard.
Southern traditions with cornbread.
MayHaw: Small crab apple like fruit
native to North Florida. Treasured for jelly and butter.
Moon Pies: Round sweet cakes with rich
chocolate icing popular with children and some adults
in the Deep South. Usually savored
with an RC Cola.
Boiled green pnuts: just what it says
boiled green peanuts. If they are dry you can roast them
or fry them with garlic powder.
Scuppernong: a type of sweet grape
common in the south sometimes referred to as "bullets".
Can
be bronze color or deep purple.
Shine: Local name for bootleg whiskey.
St Augustine Sweet: Onion grown in St.
Johns County. similar to Vidalia onion.
Sweet Potatoes Popular potatoes in the
South served as a vegtable or as dessert.
Swamp Cabbage: The heart of the
cabbage palm,eaten raw or cooked in stews.
