In the beginning Xander starts out as a sloppy,grungy, loafish type guy with a witty yet sometimes stupid sense of humor. He's in love with Buffy, but no matter how hard he tries she never notices him the way he'd like. He is incredibly jealous of Angel and he doesn't understand why she is in love with him.
"Fish gotta swim, Birds gotta fly."
He is always trying to be Buffy's hero and yet she is always saving him. She and Willow end up saving him when is attracted to big Preying Manits and when he was in habited by a hyena. But he did get to save Buffy in the season finale when she was killed by the Master. the master bit her and she passed out. She drowned in some water and he had to give her mouth to mouth. He and Willow have a very special relationship. She feels the same way about him as he feels about Buffy. It's kind of like a love triangle only it has four people if you include Angel. He doesn't even realize that Willow is in love with him. He is very protective of Willow and he would rather die that see her get hurt.
"Man, your timing doesn't suck."
In the second season Xander finally sees some action. Sometimes more than he bargins for. Afteralmost becoming bug food for their teacher the first seasons he falls for a Inca Mummy who has the kiss of death. Then he and Cordelia become closet buddies for awhile before Willow finds out about them. They make their strange and unusual relationship public. They are constantly fighting and kissing. He gets jealous when Willow and Oz's relationship gets more intense. He can never make up his mind on who he wants.
"Oh, no. My Life's not to complicated."
When Cordelia breaks up with Xander on Valentine's Day he's so hurt and humilated he decides to have Aimmee, who happens to be a witch, cast a speel of lov on Cordelia. Which backfrires and every girl but Cordy wants him including Buffy and Willow. Even Mrs. Calender, Drusilla, and Buffy's mom go nuts for him. In casting the speel all the girls turn against Cordelia. He and Cordy go in hiding and she realizes the spell was for her and tells her friends she is going to date anyone she wants even if he is lame. They get back together and they still fight.

He would do anything for Buffy or Willow. When Buffy gets sick he doesn't leave her side. He even stands up to Angel to keep him away from her. He always comes through comes through even for Cordelia. When a ghost threatens to shut down the school, even if he wants it to, he helps to keep it up. When the swim team mysteriously starts to get eaten with the skin left he joins the team to find out what's going on. This made Cordelia really happy to have her boyfriend in a sport, even if the sport doesn't require much clothing. He risks turning into a fish when he realizes the team in the Sauna is laced with steriods of a weird affect. He even gets to save Buffy from being taken on by the "entire" swin team. So, he's once again.
To everyone just tuning, everyone here is a crazy person."
In the season finale Xander really shows his angry side when Buffy and Willow find the disk Mrs. Calender got killed for and Bufy is undecided in whether or not to restore Angel's soul. He didn't think that Angel should get off so easy after doing all he did. He basically called her selfish. Then when it came down to it and they got ready to do it he wasthere. They were ambushed and he ended up breaking his arm. Buffy was accused of being the one who attacked them and he helped her hidefrom the police. He stays by Willow's side when she is in the hospital and unconcious. He even confesses that he loves her and he is really hurt when she calls for Oz when she wakes up. Willow decides to to do the curse again to help Buffy and she sends Xander to tell her what's going on. He fails to tell Buffy. Instead he ttells her that Willow said "Kick his ass." Xander saves Giles and misses the big scene with Buffy and Angel. At the end of the finale he gets a major guilt trip when Willow and everyone are talking about Buffy and Angel maybe being together.
