SPACELAB FLIGHTS 1983 - 1998

The Spacelab project started in 1973 as part of NASA's Space Shuttle Program. Spacelab consists of two payload carrier elements, a pressurised manned laboratory module and a series of instrument platforms or pallets, suitable for conducting research and application activities in Space Shuttle Missions lasting up to 17 days. The modules and pallets were designed to be flown separately or in various configurations depending on the user requirements.

In June 1974 ESRO (now ESA) awarded ERNO (now DASA) a contract for the development and manufacture of Spacelab. The delivery of the first flight unit was planned for 1979, with the first flight in 1980. But the first flight unit was delayed an eventualy delivered to NASA in December 1981, due to all the Shuttle delays the first flight took place in December 1983.
