Concerts

Rose has been busy with band concerts in March. She participated in the Upper Cumberland concert Festival on March 2 in Cookeville. This festival provides an opportunity for bands across Middle Tennessee to perform for a panel of distinguished music educators in a high quality performance environment. It was a two day event that included 19 different schools. Pleasant Hill Middle School Band was first on the program and performed two pieces.

Rose and her friend Memphis played at an All-County Honors Band concert the next week. It was a "clinic" just for Middle schools this time.

The first two songs were directed by Mr. Tipton, the band director for SMHS (and apparently all the girls thought he was dreamy). The first song was called Furioso. The second song was called “Salvation is Created.” They’ve been practicing it at school this past week.

There was a special percussion performance, called The Bucket Brigade, and it was so cool! You could hardly see them at all in the video, but you could definitely hear them, it was so neat!

The last two songs were directed by Mr. Johnson, the band director for CCHS. His first song was called “Skysplitter Fanfare.” The final song was my favorite of all. It’s written by the same guy who wrote “Mechanical Monsters.” This one was called “Blackbeard” and it’s very pirate-y. You hear all kinds of unconventional instruments again, there’s a guy hitting an anvil with a hammer, a guy slamming a chain into a board, lots of clanking and clashing, and the kids all shouting “Yo ho ho!” I loved this one!

What an incredible group of dedicated and talented band directors this county is blessed with. And I think Pleasant Hill has the very best one of all!!
