Population Explosion!!

(This article is directed more towards people who have sites that get very little traffic.)

How many times have you sat in front of your computer, staring at your website saying to yourself, "I’ve put all this work into my site, it’s not a bad site, it’s not a great site, but it’s like no one even knows I exist. Why did I even make this stupid page in the first place, it was fun, but there’s no one to see the results of my hard work, and love!!". I use to think like that too. I thought that I had wasted the past 3 years slowly learning how to do good html, and make nice graphics for my page. On March 26th I posted a message saying my site was closed and would not reopen. I couldn’t take the fact that the site I had worked so hard on only got an average of 7-8 visitors per day, and about 50 visits per week..

Well I fell back on my word, and changed the closed sign to a hibernation sign so I could begin work on a new layout for my page. Ten days after I posted my new layout I had racked in 249 tying my record for total visitors in March. I had 20+ viewers for 6 straight days, and a new single day record of 42 visitors in 1 day. Why the sudden explosion in visitors? Well as far as I can tell it only happened because some search engines started listing my site as the #3 site when you look up the word "Sailormoon". Now you’re probably thinking, "So what are you complaining about? You’ve got people visiting your site.". Well you see going from getting 7 hits a day to 20 hits a day isn’t as fun as it might sound. Matter a fact it’s kind of a burden knowing that I’m getting more visitors. So now I’m more obligated to update my page more often then I normally do (I normally update at least 1-2 a week). "So, that’s the only real problem you’ll have anyway." Is what I’m sure you’re saying, well you’re wrong. My page now faces the frightening prospect of people stealing from my site. For all I know while I’m writing this, John Doe (no offense John, I just couldn’t think of a good person to use as an example.), could be copying the html from my main page to place on his page (and without giving credit where credit is due… For shame John!!).

So as you can see getting lots of visitors is sort of a mixed blessing. Sure my site is being viewed by more people, but it’s also becoming vulnerable to more lunatics who might feel that something on my site offends them (Heaven help my in-box, the flames, the flames!! Ahhhh!!!---). Personally I’m torn between joy, and fear now. The joy of people visiting my site, and the fear of people bringing down a mini apocalypse on my site. But I guess I’m going to have to deal with it cause there really isn’t anything I can do about it. So remember that even though the thought of getting hundreds of hits to your website a week might sound like a God send, be sure you know what you’re getting yourself into.

For all you know your little "Anywhere, USA" could transform into a "New York City, New York" and leave you crying in a corner in fear of being mugged by the thousands of unhappy visitors.
