Training for Anatolian Shepherd Dogs - Lesson 8
LESSON EIGHT

HEELING
Continue with the pylon heeling. Initially, you were enticing your dog with the treat to come up. Now, we are going to add the correction along with direction. Remember, lots of talk and praise. Really talk it up when your dog is in the proper position. WORK HARD ON KEEPING YOUR HAND AT YOUR SIDE, NO CHECKING, NO GUIDING AND NO BRAKING. YOUR DOG DOES NOT HAVE A BRAKE PEDAL ATTACHED TO THE COLLAR - USE THE COMMAND “NO SIT” WITH YOUR CORRECTION.

COME WHEN CALLED
Your dog must be steady on the stays for this. Command a SIT/STAY and walk away, starting with the RIGHT foot. Turn and face your dog. Command your dog, “Fido, COME,” you MAY need to give the dog a slight pull to get them started on the command come. Make sure the dog comes to you and sits at your feet and doesn’t run past you. With an Anatolian, this is a command that you really want to reinforce the positive, happy result of coming to you. Always give a small treat! Much later, you can start making the treat random and then eliminate the regularity and only provide an occasional treat. Years from now, you should still be giving him an occasional treat for coming when called.

SIT/STAY and DOWN/STAY
If your dog is steady, you can start doing this exercise with your lead on the floor. Start out at six feet and as your dog becomes more dependable, use your long line and increase the distance and time to have him stay. (BE SURE YOU ARE RELEASING YOUR DOG OR GIVING IT ANOTHER COMMAND FROM YOUR STAYS).

SIT FOR EXAMINATION
Command your dog to SIT/STAY and have a family member or friend to come up to your dog with a closed fist to be sniffed. Then, that person should very gently rub the dog’s head and shoulders, backing away when finished. No one should ever approach a dog from behind – always approach so you can be seen by the dog. If you have a hyper dog, just use the command sit, then add the command stay as they become dependable. ALWAYS TELL PEOPLE TO ALLOW THE DOG TO SNIFF THEIR CLOSED FIST, THEN PET THE HEAD/SHOULDER.

Also use the stand command and the down command with this exercise. A down/stay is good when your dog is meeting young children or even small dogs. The stand/stay can be very useful at the vet, in the show ring and/or for grooming.

LONG LINE RECALL
Begin doing long line recalls, (use a 20 foot line). Have your dog out in a release position (like playing in the yard or some such.) As soon as something distracts him, give the command FIDO/COME. Again, if required, give your lead a slight pull to get to get your pup coming to you.

Continue to use your commands every day, every way that you can. Such as bolting out a gate, jumping on company. Set them up, then add your corrections. Praise them for proper responses.
