Prologue - A Chance Meeting

"You may be seated" the pastor said. I was just visiting this church. I was visiting my best friend in Kentucky where she had been excepted to a collage. I’m normally not a religious person, but for some reason I felt the need to come to church today. I was sitting in the middle of a big Baptist church in Lexington, Kentucky, all by myself. It was the closest church to Hope’s apartment.

Hope Matthews, my best friend, is three years older than me, turning 21 in two months. I had just finished high school, and came to visit her for two weeks. During the sermon I noticed the guy sitting next to me. He was sorta short, with dirty blond hair that curled in the front. He had the bluest eyes you've ever seen. He really wasn't bad looking. 'You can't be thinking about that right now', I told myself, placing my hand on my stomach.

The sermon was over and it was time to sing. They asked everyone to stand up. I was a little nervous. I love to sing, and would love to do it professionally, but I never really had any encouragement, except from Hope, and another friend of ours, Destiny Roberts. And considering my condition it didn't look like that was going to happen any time soon. I stood up and started to sing. When the song was over and I sat back down, I felt someone tap me on the shoulder. It was the guy sitting next to me, the blue-eyed one.

"Hi, my name is Brian. And I would just like to say that you have a beautiful voice." I was shocked. The only people who had ever told me that were Hope and Destiny.

"Thank you."

"I only speak the truth, especially in church. What's your name?"

"I’m Faith, Faith Morrison."

"Nice to meet you. I don't believe I've seen you around here. Did you just move here?"

"No, I’m visiting my best friend, Hope."

"Faith and Hope? That's interesting."

"Oh, be quiet, we got teased enough when we were growing up. And to make it even worse we have a really good friend named Destiny," I pretended to pout.

"I’m sorry, but I think that's a little strange. Is Hope here? You seem to be alone."

"Yeah, I’m by myself. I don't know why but I felt the need to come to church today." The pastor was saying something about a special performance.

"Hey, I would love to stay and chat, but I have to go and sing. Talk to you later." With that he walked off. As he walked up in front of the congregation, he was joined by four other young men, and a little blond kid, that looked like he was one of the other guys’ little brother. I listened for a little while, they were good. Especially Brian. Suddenly I felt very sick. I got up and walked into the ladies room, reaching a stall just in time to get sick.

When I came out of the bathroom church was over and everyone was leaving. I wanted to find Brian and tell that I loved his performance, but I couldn't find him. Hope pulled the car up right next to me, and giving one final look across the crowd of people, I got in the car. "How was church this morning?" Hope teased.

"Actually. Pretty interesting." I told her about Brian and the singing.
