What about keeping crickets?
For any person about to enter into the world of insect
eating reptiles the cricket question pops up in most all conversations.
So we decided to put this very brief explanation on the web site. Best
of all a picture is worth a thousand words. We produce a gut load for crickets!
. Add one table spoon per 500 crickets. Replace as needed.. !
"Yes that was a shameless advertisement "
I hope this helps you .....
10 gal aquarium, wire top, no water bowl, the inside of the aquarium
is lined with the egg crate filler that comes with crickets when you order
them from a cricket supplier. Use carrot, yellow squash, sweet
potato any vegetable you can put in the aquarium will be consumed. The
diet/gut load we use has all the mineral diversity needed. Carrot
is my vegetable of choice.
The carrot will supply the moisture needed to survive and do well.
If you intend to breed, then by all means purchase one of the gravity feed
cricket watering devices.
If you noticed we did not refer to potato as a food
source for crickets, here's why. If a potato has been cooled down during
storage the starch turns into sugar. Many chain stores purchase potato's
from huge wholesalers some of which keep the potato's at cooler temps for
long periods of time.
Never use any soap to clean you aquarium. Water and a clean cloth
will take care of any mess left by crickets.
Keep the crickets clean! If you can smell the crickets
they need to be cleaned. You should never see any larva in with your crickets.
Crickets will shed there exoskeleton and in a few days you will see all
these skeletons on the floor of the aquarium. This means they are growing
! A good sign...... 80 to 85 degrees is perfect. No humidity
is perfect, but for most this is impossible......
Hint for winter ! Use an under aquarium heater.
Cut 1/2 inch styrofoam to fit around the aquarium and on the wire lid.
Use 2 inch packing tape to tape it together. Cut a 2 inch hole in the styrofoam
lid for air.
