Training Match ???? [Mark J. B. Bowen]

This match was agreed to the night before in an impromptu fashion there was no time for deep opening preparation. Also being somewhat rusty I felt it best to work myself into a rythm with a solid approach. We drew for colours right before the game. I got White. Daren Wisdom and Geoffrey Byfield were present as we started play at KFC by UWI.
1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 c5
Porter is know n as a KID expert but I had a feeling he would try a surprise. In his match versus Tobisch he played a QGD, here he goes to the Benoni. Also the Benko Gambit is in his repertoire he was also feeling out if I would allow that.
3. d5 e6 4. Nc3 exd5 5. cxd5 d6 6. e4 g6 7. f4 Bg7 8. Nf3
Taimanov's line with Bb5+ is a strong option.
O-O 9. Bd3 Re8 10. O-O a6
Porter after the game suggested that he may be able to play b5 right away here.
11. a4 c4
A fairly common move in the Benoni. The pawn could later support a knight on c5/e5 to get the d3 square. It also has a very clamping effect on the queenside.
12. Bc2 Nbd7 13. Qe2 Qc7
the battle for e5 and c4 continues.
14. Be3 b6 15. Bd4 Bb7
As a Schevy player Porter would be comfortable with his pieces on these squares only the fianchettoed bishop is placed differently.
16. Qf2 Rab8 17. Rfe1 Ba8
   Preparing b5.
18. h3
At first b5 looks strong but then I suddenly realized that it required preparation.
b5
Porter does not realize the danger and sticks to his plan.
19. axb5 axb5 20. Ra7
Porter was surprised by this move but remained calm. After the game he spoke to me about his Olympiad experience and said the main thing he learnt from watching the IMs and GMs there was their calmness in defence and willingness to play any move required by the position.
Qd8 21. Ng5
Ideas aimed at restraining b4 are also possible.
b4 22. Nd1 Re7 23. Ra6 Qc7 24. Ra7 Bb7 25. Qe2
Blaming time trouble doesn't help in truth White lost the thread of the game some time back. The rook on a7 reminds me of an article I read on superflous knights in one of Dvoretsky's books. Although apparently on a strong square I could find no way of bringing it to bear on the position.
Nxd5
Porter senses the right moment to strike. The Cobra beats the Mongoose with one deft venomous strike.
26. Qf2 Bxd4 27. Qxd4 Nxf4
   the poison sets in.
28. Nf2 Qc5 29. Qd2 Qxg5 0-1

Training match /Kingston, Jamaica (11.2) 2001 [Mark J. B. Bowen]

The reason for my loss in this game is very simple. I was abducted by aliens the night before and after performing several painful surgical techniques on my brain they returned me to Earth in apparently normal condition.
1. c4 Nf6 2. Nc3 e6 3. e4
At this point I realized what they had done, the evil aliens had implanted my skull with a telepathic transponder. My brain began to twitch now.
d6
The alien technology made me feel unusually calm even though I was now playing a very passive move, which is contrary to my style of play and not in my opening repertoire, I felt quite happy.
4. d4 Be7 5. f4 O-O 6. Nf3 c5
A more aggressive female alien now began to push my buttons. She forced me to lash out aggressively now.
7. d5 exd5 8. cxd5 Re8 9. Bd3
My hands trembled now as I summoned all my mental energy just to find some moves for myself. Could I overcome the remote control of these aliens through sheer will power?
a6 10. O-O b5 11. e5
Porter acted totally oblivious to the devious alien machinations but surely he was a part of this Alien Conspiracy too. The Extra Teresstial accuracy of his play suggests that they were influencing him also but that they wanted him to win.
dxe5 12. fxe5
I'd planned to play Ng4 but now the aliens took over my motor skills forcing me to smile as they moved my knight for me. In horror I saw my fate sealed by my own hands.
Nxd5??
The move which proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that aliens not only exist but that they are trying to control the planet.
13. Nxd5
Porter knew this was a triumph for the Alien Conspiracy.
h6
The aliens now made it impossible for me to say " I resign " or to tip my King over, they forced me to play on this hopeless position to prove the power of their mind control device.
14. Nxe7+ Qxe7 15. Qe1 Be6 16. Qe4
Now a female alien named Manchurian began downloading several candidate moves to my newly implanted hard drive. Her software showed me more positions than the Russian version of the Kama Sutra and it was almost frying my circuits.
Qa7
   I played the Manchurian Candidate.
17. Qh7+ Kf8 18. Be4
Porter pla yed this instantaneously due to the aid of the super computers in the Alien Mother Ship.
c4+ 19. Kh1 Nd7 20. Qh8+ Ke7 21. Qxg7 Rg8 22. Qxh6
The Mother Ship now began to leave our Solar System.
Rac8 23. Be3 Qc7 24. Bg5+
Teleporting Bishops make use of Black Holes thus game two ended. As the Mother Ship left normal orbit, we could only hope that measures of blocking the Alien Technology will be found quickly by Earth scientists.
1-0
