This lesson is part of a
program designed to introduce fifth grade students to basic geography
concepts and map skills. This lesson covers compass directions, a concept
central to using maps in geographic instruction and real-life
applications.
The Cardinal, Intercardinal, and
Secondary Intercardinal points are illustrated and described. Degree
measurements for these points are shown.
After completing the
instructional program, the student will be able to successfully identify
the Cardinal, Intercardinal, and Secondary Intercardinal compass
directions verbally and by symbol, and give the numeric degree equivalent
of each individual direction.
A quiz provides content review
and student feedback. Results of the quiz are forwarded to the teacher by
electronic mail, to be evaluated and integrated into the overall unit
performance evaluation.
