Line Dance Step and Pattern Definitions

The most difficult part of learning to line dance is understanding the different patterns that go into the dances being taught.  Once the individual steps and/or patterns are memorized, learning a dance becomes much easier.

Below is a list of step and pattern definitions.  Please keep in mind that although I tried to be thorough, I would never claim this to be an all inclusive list.  There are many creative people out there making up new steps every day.  My intention here is to define what are, in my opinion, some of the most common steps and/or patterns.


The following guidelines are provided for clarification:
  • To STEP means to change weight to the foot indicated.
  • To TAP means to touch to the floor without changing weight.
  • Where the "&" is used in the description, there is a motion that matches it.
  • Where the word "and" is used in the description, there is more than one motion happening at the same time.
Fan Out
RIGHT or LEFT
R:  While keeping heels on the floor, turn tues to RIGHT then back to center (2 counts).
L:  Turn toes LEFT then back to center (2 counts).
Heel Splits While keeping the toes on the floor, swivel heels apart then back together (2 counts).
Jazz Box or Box Step Step RIGHT over LEFT, step back LEFT, step center RIGHT, step center LEFT (4 counts).
Heel Swivels
RIGHT or LEFT
R:  While keeping toes on the floor, swivel both heels RIGHT, and return to center (2 counts).
L:  Swivel both heels LEFT, and return to center (2 counts).
Heel Tap
FORWARD or CORNER
with RIGHT or LEFT
F:  Using either RIGHT or LEFT foot, tap heel directly FORWARD of standing position, and return foot to center (2 counts).
C:  Using either RIGHT or LEFT foot, tap heel diagonally to corner, and return foot to center (2 counts).
Toe Tap Back
RIGHT or LEFT
R:  Tap RIGHT toe directly behind standing position, and return foot to center (2 counts).
L:  Tap LEFT directly behind standing position, and return foot to center (2 counts).
Star RIGHT or LEFT R:  Tap RIGHT toe directly FORWARD, SIDE than BACK of standing position (3 counts).
L:  Tap LEFT directly behind standing position, and return foot to center (3 counts).
Grapevine or Vine Step
RIGHT or LEFT
R:  Step side RIGHT, step LEFT behind RIGHT, step side RIGHT, tap LEFT next to RIGHT (4 counts).
L:  Step side LEFT, step RIGHT behind LEFT, step side LEFT, tap RIGHT next to LEFT (4 counts).
Turning or Rolling Vine RIGHT or LEFT R:  While moving RIGHT, make a ¼ turn RIGHT stepping to RIGHT, step LEFT around RIGHT and pivot ¾ turn RIGHT (to face front again), step side RIGHT, tap LEFT next to RIGHT (4 counts).
L:  While moving LEFT, make a ¼ turn LEFT stepping to LEFT, step RIGHT around LEFT and pivot ¾ turn LEFT (to face front again), step side LEFT, tap RIGHT next to LEFT (4 counts).
8-Count Weave
RIGHT or LEFT
R:  Step side RIGHT, step LEFT behind RIGHT, step side RIGHT, step LEFT over RIGHT, step side RIGHT, step LEFT behind RIGHT, step side RIGHT, tap LEFT next to RIGHT (8 counts).
L:  Step side LEFT, step RIGHT behind LEFT, step side LEFT, step RIGHT over LEFT, step side LEFT, step RIGHT behind LEFT, step side LEFT, tap RIGHT next to LEFT (8 counts).
Schottische
RIGHT or LEFT
R:  Step side RIGHT, step LEFT behind RIGHT, step side RIGHT, hop on RIGHT while lifting LEFT knee (4 counts).
L:  Step side LEFT, step RIGHT behind LEFT, step side LEFT, hop on LEFT while lifting RIGHT knee (4 counts).
Schottische
FORWARD or BACK
R:  Step forward RIGHT, step forward LEFT, step forward RIGHT, hop on RIGHT while lifting LEFT knee (4 counts).
L:  Step forward LEFT, step forward RIGHT, step forward LEFT, hop on LEFT while lifting RIGHT knee (4 counts).
Step/Tap
RIGHT or LEFT
R:  Step side RIGHT, tap LEFT next to RIGHT, step side LEFT, tap RIGHT next to LEFT (4 counts).
L:  Step side LEFT, tap RIGHT next to LEFT, step side RIGHT, tap LEFT next to RIGHT (4 counts).

Double Step/Slide

R:  Step side RIGHT, slide LEFT next to RIGHT, step side RIGHT, tap LEFT next to RIGHT (4 counts).
L:  Step side LEFT, slide RIGHT next to LEFT, step side LEFT, tap RIGHT next to LEFT (4 counts).
Diagonal Step/Tap
FORWARD or BACK
R:  Step diagonally forward RIGHT, tap LEFT next to RIGHT, step diagonally back LEFT, tap RIGHT next to LEFT (4 counts).
L:  Step diagonally forward LEFT, tap RIGHT next to LEFT, step diagonally back RIGHT, tap LEFT next to RIGHT (4 counts).
Rock Step
FORWARD or BACK
with RIGHT or LEFT
R/F:  Step forward RIGHT, return weight to LEFT at center (2 counts).
R/B:  Step back RIGHT, return weight to LEFT at center (2 counts).
L/F:  Step forward LEFT, return weight to RIGHT at center (2 counts).
L/B:  Step back LEFT, return weight to RIGHT at center (2 counts).
½ Turn Pivot
RIGHT or LEFT
R:  Step forward LEFT and pivot ½ turn RIGHT, step forward RIGHT (2 counts).
L:  Step forward RIGHT and pivot ½ turn LEFT, step forward LEFT (2 counts).
Shuffle FORWARD
with RIGHT or LEFT
R:  Step forward RIGHT & step LEFT next to RIGHT, step forward RIGHT (counts as 1&2).

Charleston Step

Hip Bumps
RIGHT or LEFT
R:  Place weight on RIGHT foot and bump hip to RIGHT (1 count).
L:  Place weight on LEFT foot and bump hip to LEFT (1 count).
Tap Cross Step
RIGHT or LEFT
R:  Tap toe side RIGHT, step RIGHT over LEFT (2 counts).
L:  Tap toe side LEFT, step LEFT over RIGHT (2 counts).
Cross Step Tap
RIGHT or LEFT
R:  Step RIGHT over LEFT, tap toe side LEFT (2 counts).
L:  Step LEFT over RIGHT, tap toe side RIGHT (2 counts).
2-Count Cross Kick
RIGHT or LEFT
R:  Tap heel FORWARD, kick RIGHT across LEFT at shin (2 counts).
L:  Tap heel forward, kick LEFT across RIGHT at shin (2 counts).
4-Count Cross Kick
RIGHT or LEFT
R:  Tap heel FORWARD, kick RIGHT across LEFT at shin, tap heel FORWARD, step center RIGHT (4 counts).
L:  Tap heel forward, kick LEFT across RIGHT at shin, tap heel forward, step center LEFT (4 counts).
Electric Kick 1&  Hop back on ball of RIGHT & return weight to center LEFT
2&  Hop forward on ball of RIGHT & return weight to center LEFT
3&  Hop back on ball of RIGHT & return weight to center LEFT

Four Star Boogie 1  Tap toe side LEFT
&2  Step center LEFT and tap toe side RIGHT

Slap Leather 1  With weight LEFT and toe side RIGHT, kick RIGHT behind LEFT and slap the inside of RIGHT heel with LEFT hand
2  Using momentum, swing RIGHT to RIGHT side making a ¼ turn LEFT and slap the outside of RIGHT heel with RIGHT hand
