TRAINING |
Our trainer Pat McGurk started his career with Joe Orseno. After apprenticing under Joe Orseno, Peter Foortay and John Kimmel for 5 years, in which he learned and gained an invaluable amount of experience and knowledge he ventured out on his own. He received his first trainer's license in New Jersey, and is currently licensed in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Florida. With a modest beginning of a barn of only 5 horses, with the average purchase price of a modest $1,500.00 dollars, Pat managed to maintain a 60% in the money percentage. Pat feels lucky in that from a modest beginning he was able too produce a few minor-racing stars for his owners. Park Keys a horse purchased in Louisiana for a $850.00 managed to place and show in 4 of 8 starts, and was well on her way to winning Maiden Special weight race at Garden State Park by 10 lengths until a rut in the track forced this horse to breakdown. Another one of the "barn stars," Sysco Ridge, was purchased by one of his clients at a butcher auction for only $235.00 as a weanling. After taking over this horse, the Emerald Isle "TEAM" was able to break this colt and start his racing career. This colt won or placed in 6 of 13 career outings, most of the starts were in either Maiden Special Weight or Allowance class races. The daily racing forum, captured by this story took it upon themselves to write a feature article about Pats' success in the DRF by featuring him in a feature article on March 28th 1997. Pat is now training in the heartland of racing, Ocala Florida. Although his stable has grown he is still a hands on trainer who tacks up, watches his charges workout everyday, and still takes care of the legwork of his horses himself.
