Crumb
Terry Zwigoff; US, 1994, 119 min., col
A remarkable documentary about Robert Crumb, comic-book genius, notorious recluse and first class social misfit, creator of the "Keep on Truckin" slogan and drawings, the Cheap Thrills Janis Joplin album cover and Fritz the Cat. Tracing his career and celebrating his work, this film also explores the influences that shaped him, in particular how he used his art as a way of exorcising the demons left over from a horrific upbringing. Grand Jury Prize winner at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival. "... an outstandingly interesting portrait of obsession and genius" (Time Out).

Mon 16 Aug
Institute Benjementa
Brothers Quay; UK, 1995, 105 min., bw
Subtitled This Dream People Call Human Life, this first feature by twin brothers Stephen and Timothy is about a man who enrols at a school for servants run by the tyrannical Johannes Benjamenta and his sister Lisa, and who begins to entertain thoughts of rescuing the melancholy Lisa from the suffocating life she leads there. An outlandishly beautiful, bizarre, mysterious and inventive film that springs a surprise as the directors, known more for their imaginative if rather abstract animation, show an ability not only to handle actors and narrative with surprising aplomb, but have also created scenes of genuine Keatonesque comedy to counterpoint the more sombre moments of outlandishly beautiful poetry. "Genuinely unsettling" (Time Out).

Mon 23 Aug
Visions of Light
Arnold Glassman; US-Japan, 1992, 92 min., col/bw

More than one hundred films are excerpted, from critical and commercial hits to offbeat pictures and B movies. Cinematographers featured include Nestor Almendros (Days of Heaven), Michael Chapman (Raging Bull), Allan Daviau (ET), Gordon Willis (The Godfather III), Gregg Toland (Citizen Kane), and Caleb Deschanel, Bill Butler, James Wong Howe, Sven Nykvist, Haskell Wexler and Vilmos Zsigmond. A dazzling visual tour in the best sense of the term.
