Tracing his career and celebrating his work, this film also explores the influences that shaped him, in particular how he used his art as a way of exorcising the demons left over from a horrific upbringing. Subtitled This Dream People Call Human Life, this first feature by twin brothers Stephen and Timothy is about a man who enrols at a school for servants run by the tyrannical Johannes Benjamenta and his sister Lisa, and who begins to entertain thoughts of rescuing the melancholy Lisa from the suffocating life she leads there. An outlandishly beautiful, bizarre, mysterious and inventive film that springs a surprise as the directors, known more for their imaginative if rather abstract animation, show an ability not only to handle actors and narrative with surprising aplomb, but have also created scenes of genuine Keatonesque comedy to counterpoint the more sombre moments of outlandishly beautiful poetry. A dazzling visual tour in the best sense of the term.
