Forget the title, The Last Days of Disco , is about people, not music. More specifically the evil, manipulative ways people can treat their friends and romantic conquests. Whit Stillman’s wickedly funny, insightful movie follows two Hampshire college graduates and their friends/boyfriends on their repeated nights out at a “Studio-54”-style New York City nightclub, circa 1980. They are: Charlotte, the cute-but-controlling bitch (the one guys want to sleep with) and Alice, the sweet-unassuming girl (the one guys want to marry). They don’t spend much time dancing, but they do talk a lot.

Stillman (who also made the wonderful Barcelona) writes all his characters in the same voice, but it’s such an interesting voice that it doesn’t matter. You could listen to these people talk for hours... two hours anyway.
