Ok, I'll give you the fact that I wouldn't want any of the guys in VERY BAD THINGS as FRIENDS, but I don't understand how you can call them unlikeable in the sense of not atleast being fun to watch. Christian Slater is so demented yet rational in this movie. He's morally repugnant, but he makes great statements like "It was the smart play!" after burying 2 individuals. Slater doesn't have much box office power, but he's made some really good films and this is one of his better ones. Daniel Stern was just fun to laugh at when he began having his mental breakdown. Jeremy Piven also was great comic relief during his breakdown... given he went a lilttle overboard when he fell on top of the coffin at the funeral, but had he not gone over the top in that scene and rather just cried loudly during the funeral, the scene wouldn't have been nearly as humorous. And about Cameron Diaz... honestly her character wasn't suppose to be likeable. She was suppose to be an obsessed bride-to-be and all round "bitch". I got a kick out of her performance actually. It was a 180 degree turn from her usual characters and I found her peformance to be great. The guy that the audience was suppose to relate to was Jon Favreau... He didn't commit any of the murders and he basically just got swept along in the entire ordeal. (The poor guy just wanted to get married.)
About the whole flashback complaint.. I thought it was well-done. The film didn't necessarily NEED to be in the form of a flashback, but most films don't NEED to be. It didn't hurt the suspense of who was going to die either... I mean Boyd wasn't seen in the opening "anxous before the wedding" scene, but he was still alive at that point. Also, you can't say you saw the death of Daniel Stern coming until the car was right on top of him. I mean, that was unexpectedly pretty darn dark. I went into the movie knowing about the strippers death and the security guards death, but Daniel Stern's demise threw me for a loop.
Anyway, I just thought the movie was great and had a lot of balls. Especially since this was a theatrical release and not some direct to video movie. It will defiintely become a cult classic of the 90's, because there is such a huge split between those that loathe it and those that love it.
