Florida military installations
previously closed or realigned

(March 12, 2003) -- Here are the Florida military bases that have been ordered closed or realigned since 1991.

Pensacola Naval Air Station: The base's Naval Aviation Depot, which overhauled helicopters, closed in 1995 and was replaced with an aviation maintenance school that moved from Memphis Naval Air Station in Tennessee. The depot employed about 3,000 workers, but that loss was partly offset by the addition of the technical school.

Cecil Field Naval Air Station: This Jacksonville-area base where the Navy stationed attack jets closed in 1999.

Orlando Naval Training Center: This Navy boot camp closed in 1998.

MacDill Air Force Base: This base near Tampa lost more than 100 F-16 fighters in 1993. It remains active as headquarters for the U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command. MacDill has since added an air refueling wing.

Homestead Air Reserve Base: Virtually destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992, this base south of Miami was downgraded from an active-duty to a reserve base in 1994.

Key West Naval Air Station: Downgraded to a naval air facility.

Eglin Air Force Base: The Air Force's largest base, covering parts of three Panhandle counties, has not sustained major reductions.
