That picture was definitely taken in the evening of June 10th, 1940, after the PM rush hour. A 6 car train of composite cars (shown in photo) was broken into 2 three car trains because they were too heavy for the 9th Ave el, south of 155th Street. They were then run south on 2nd Ave to the Battery and up 9th Ave. These composite cars were never used on the 6th and 9th Ave els because of their weight. The 3 car sets of composites were originally suppoesed to run between Burnside Ave and 155th Street. In June, 1941, they were reduced to 2 car shuttles, between 155th Street and 167th Street.

Also, look at the other 3 car set of composites which are just north of the station and approaching the Putnam drawbridge. As I said previously, this HAS to be about 7:30PM, June 10th, 1940- the last day of 9th Ave el service. Rush hour is over and it is still daylight. From June 11th, 1940 until June 16th, 1941, three car Composite shuttles operated between Burnside/Jerome Ave's and 155th Street. After that, two car shuttles ran between 167St/River Ave and 155St/8Av.
