Chapter 2

After showering and changing, Nick and I hopped into his red Toyota pickup and headed to the Tampa Time office. As expected, the office was bustling around with people frantically writing last minute things for the next day's paper. Sice Nick had had this problem before, he knew just where Debra's office was.

I was a little shocked to see a young shaply blonde woman, probably only a couple of years older than Nick and I. I began to nervously twirl my dark brown hair around my index finger. It was a nervous habit that I always picked up when I was about to confront someone. I inhaled deeply, and patted Nick on the shoulder as I approached her desk.

"Nickolas!" she greeted brusquely, ignoring my presence.

I suddenly realized that I had no place to say anything to Debra, because I didn't even know her--but Nick did.

"Are you here about the article in today's paper sweetie?" she asked her voice dripping with syrup.

Nick ran his hands through his hair. I noticed that he was beginning to turn red. He was fidgeting with the hem of his jacket, another sure sign that he was very nervous right now.

I rolled my eyes and met Debra's arctic blue eyes with my own china blue ones. I jutted my hand forward and introduced myself "Selena Palmer...I'm Nick's friend. I'm visiting from..."

"New Hampshire," she finished. "Of course I know who you are. You're Brian's girlfriend. You're in every picture taken of Brian in the past year.

I always forgot that people like Debra who do thier research WOULD know something like that. After all, it WAS commen knowledge.

"Um...right..."

"About the article?"

Nick and I made eye contact. We both swallowed nervously. For some reason this woman intimidated us.

I tucked my hair behind my ears and shifted my eyes from Nick to Debra. I was going to say this for Nick's sake because he was such a good friend of mine. "I think the impression people are getting about Nick is wrong...and that's partly due to articles like the one you published this morning."

"The thing is...our breakup was mutual. In fact it was more her idea than mine," Nick stated.

Debra shrugged "hey...whatever sells."

Was she for real? I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Debra caught the look of disgust on my face. "I only published what the girl told me."

"Exactly!" Nick threw his hands into the air. "You didn't even ask me what I thought of the whole thing.

"Nick, if people wanted to read about how sweet you are, they would buy Tiger Beat for Christ's sake." Debra said exasperated.

"You REALLY expect Nick to be understanding about this entire thing, huh?" I asked disgustedy. I slammed my palm onto her desk. "HE is the victim here. HE'S not the one who needs to be UNDERSTANDING!" I looked at Nick. "I think we should talk to the editor, and explain to him about the chat we had today."

"Now there's no need--"

"Then publish an article on Nick...the REAL Nick. WITH an apology!" I glared at her. I had her cornered.

Debra sighed, "I'll get right on it."

I pointed to her, "tomorrow...front page of the arts and entertainmrnt section!" I demanded. Performing an about-face Nick and I made the perfect exit.
