Chapter 9

Nick hopped into his red truck and turned on the ignition. Turning on the interior lights to his vehicle, he reread the scented stationary that he had found in his mailbox that afternoon. It had been in a strange unpostmarked envelope.

We need to reach an agreement. Remember, I can stop publishing those articles...but nothing is free.

Nick pulled out of the driveway and steered his truck in the direction of Debra Coy's residence. He found himself pulling into the driveway of a modest single story white house. Nervously he played with his keychains as he hopped out of the vehicle and rung the doorbell.

When Debra opened the door, Nick coughed in shock and turned to face his back toward the barely dressed woman in front of him. She was wearing nothing but a T-shirt.

Debra laughed "Mr. Carter...you should know better than that...I was just about to go for a dip in the pool...I'm wearing a bathing suit!"

Nick turned bright red and turned back around. "Look, I don't know what game you're trying to play, but I'm in sort if a hurry and I really need to be getting back home, ok?" Nick said irritable, not removing his eyes from Debra's face.

She looked up at him with her innocent blue eyes. Before he had a chance to protest, Debra's lips were on his, kissing him passionalty. It had been over a year since he was kissed, so after the initial shock of the action, he found himself responding. He remembered last year when he did a concert at Selena's school, and he had met her that day. Her auborn hair had ben pulled back into a hasty ponytail, and she had a clipboard in hand. Nick reached his hands up and ran them through Selena's hair as he continued to kiss her. Only when Debra began protesting did he stop.

Roughly she pushed him away from her, grabbong something from Nick's jacket pocjet in the process. "What the Hell do you thing you're doing?" she asked, pointing a perfectly manicured finger in his face.

Nick scratched his head "Wha...?" he realized what he had done and turned bright red for the second time.

"Who? do you think you are? Barging into my home...and making...making advances towards me."

Nick gasped, "but you..."

There was a knock at the door, and Debra bullied past Nick to open it. In the door stood her plump middle-aged next-door neighbor.

"Mrs. Peterson!! Oh thank heavens! I was just about to call the police..." Debra placed her hand dramatically on her forehead. Evidently Nick was the only one who saw through her act.

The woman fixed her gray eyes on Nick "get out! " she bellowed, shaking a plump finger in his face.

When Nick hesitated, she cried out again.

"GET OUT" Her voice rippled in anger. She looked around for a weapon. She couldn't find one, but Debra did. She grabbed a black loafer with a four inch square heel and heaved in Nick's direction. Nick cried out in pain as the shoe hit him squarely in the eye. Obviously not willing to embrace any more danger, Nick ran clumsily out of the house and hastily drove away.
