SOFT WATER NATURALLY
Before
You Begin:
The magnet
method will not work on iron pipes. Here is a simple test to
verify if your pipes are iron. Take only one magnet to the pipe.
If the magnet sticks to the pipe all by itself with no help, this system will not work for
you.
HOME INSTRUCTIONS
Radio Shack Year 2002 Catalog, Page 230 or Radio Shack Year 2001 Catalog, Page 227 Magnets, Item (3) High-energy ceramic magnet 1-7/8 x 7/8 x 3/8, Part Number 64-1877 (99 cents each). Buy eight (8) for soft water, or the entire package of ten (10) for extra application below.
Also get some tape
to secure magnets to water pipes. Transparent postal mailing
tape, electrical tape, PVC tape, sealing tape, or spot ties all
work fine. Go outside to
where the water pipe comes into the house or garage with four
magnets and the tape. Place one magnet on each side of the pipe.
They will almost stick on the pipe from their natural magnetic
attraction (pull) toward each other. Tape or secure them with
ties to the pipe. Now do the same thing two inches away from them
on the same pipe with the other two magnets. That's all there is to it, you now have
soft water on your cold water line. Now go to your hot
water heater with four magnets and the tape. Find which pipe sends
the hot water into the house by running a hot water tap in the
house for a moment. The pipe you will want to put the magnets on
will be hot to the touch. Repeat instructions

Application: If you bought the package of ten magnets,
you will have two left over. Put them together in a container,
like a bag, box, plastic wrap, tupperware -- anything but a metal
container -- and place them on the middle shelf of your
refrigerator. Everything will stay so much fresher for so much
longer you just won't believe it.
APARTMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Radio Shack Year 2002 Catalog, Page 230 or Radio Shack Year 2001 Catalog, Page 227 Magnets, Item (4) Ceramic magnets 1/2" button, Part Number 64-1883 (Pkg of 5 - $1.59). Add up your applications below and buy the number of packages needed. Example below is for a two bathroom apartment with an automatic ice maker and a washer/dryer connection and requires six (6) packages.
These magnets are smaller than the home application because the water lines are smaller in diameter.
Also get some tape to secure magnets to water pipes. Transparent postal mailing tape, electrical tape, PVC tape, scotch tape (what I use), or sealing tape all work fine. Magnets will need to be applied to pipes as listed below:
Kitchen sink pipes (4) magnets
Bathroom sink pipes (4) magnets for each bathroom
Shower (4) magnets for each shower -- (if the shower pipe is long enough as in older apartment buildings, use the larger magnets as in instructions for house hot water heater pictured above - the results will be better as this pipe is wider than sink pipes)
Ice cube maker (1) magnet
Washer/Dryer hoses (8) magnets - If you use cold water only then you will only need (4) magnets. (If you use the larger magnets as in instructions for house hot water heater pictured above - the results will be better as the hose is wider than sink pipes. This is a little more expensive, but well worth it).
NOTE: If you have access to a hot water heater in your apartment, follow the HOME INSTRUCTIONS above using four (4) of the large magnets P/N 64-1877 on your hot water pipe. You will then only need to buy and install the 1/2" button magnets for the cold water lines on your Kitchen Sink, Bathroom Sink, Ice Cube Maker, and Washer/Dryer hoses. Example below is for a two bathroom apartment with an automatic ice maker and a washer/dryer connection applying magnets on the cold water lines only.
cold water lines only
- Kitchen sink pipes (2) magnets
- Bathroom sink pipes (2) magnets for each bathroom
- Shower (4) magnets for each shower
- Ice cube maker (1) magnets
- Washer/Dryer hoses (4) magnets
Now Let's Install The 1/2" Magnets to The Pipes
Go to the shower with four magnets. Where the pipe comes out of the wall just before the water enters the shower head place one magnet on each side of the pipe. They will almost stick on the pipe from their natural magnetic attraction (pull) toward each other. Tape them to the pipe. Now do the same thing approximately two inches away from them on the same pipe with the other two magnets. (See picture above.)
Now go to the bathroom sink with four magnets. Under the sink where hot and cold pipes come out of the wall, place one magnet on each side of the cold water pipe and secure them with tape. Now place one magnet on each side of the hot water pipe and secure them with tape.
Repeat above steps in second bathroom shower and sink and the kitchen sink.
Now open the freezer compartment in your refrigerator. If you have an automatic ice cube maker, tape one magnet to the water pipe where it enters the ice cube tray.
Lastly, go to your washer/dryer with eight magnets. You will see a hot and cold water hose (usually rubber). The area where the hoses come out of the wall is the easiest area to work on. Place one magnet on each side of the cold water hose and secure with tape. Now do the same thing two inches away from them on the the same hose with two more magnets. Repeat the same process on the hot water hose. (See picture above.)
That's all there is to it, you now have soft water in your apartment.
