Akira Akira was and still is the most influential Japanimation movie ever made. This is because Akira was created wth the most effort and the most work of any Japanese animated movie ever. Akira is set in Tokyo in 2019, after the end of WWIII, and after Tokyo was demolished and rebuilt, motorcycle gangs of "clowns" cause trouble in the streets, hundreds of civilians riot and protest against the police as they enforce strict, cold laws and severely discipline criminals, and a group of children possessing psychic powers are on the verge of resurrecting the force which will end the corruption in Tokyo. This $7 million plus masterpiece is the only anime movie ever to be done completely hand-drawn without using cels or computers. And the effort shows. Though the animation quality isn't as crisp or realistic as movies like Ghost in the Shell, Akira's hand-drawn animation is smoother and more consistent than any other movie out there. Another one of the highlights of this great movie is the sound. The music and sound effects were done with painstaking detail and sound amazing. The music in Akira is different than any other anime movie and creates a surrealistic, macabre mood. Also good is the voice acting in the dubbed version. The people used to play the characters' voices give a consistent, realistic performance, although the voice acting doesn't work very well in accordance with the animation of people's mouths in the movie. The best aspect of the movie, however, is the storyline. Dark, confusing, smart, tight, and detailed, the storyline in Akira is amazing. The 2,000 page Manga fits exceedingly well into this over two hour extravaganza. Focusing on betrayal, technology, and man's corruption leading to his own destruction, Akira's storyline is it's main selling point. Overall, Akira is truly the greatest Japanimation movie ever made, and has spawned a countless number of rip-offs. Akira is cerebral and dark, and ultimately satisfying and beautiful. I can't recommend any movie more than this one, and if you have never seen Akira, go and get it right now. It truly is the greatest anime ever made.
