The flight was unusually long and Alyson was very quiet. Brian asked her about it while they were renting a car.
"I'll tell you about it later."
Brian was concerned about her, but he knew once she set her mind to something, she stuck to it. They drove in silence for a few minutes, but Alyson broke it.
"Brian, so you remember last week when I got sick?"
"Yeah..."
"Well I went to the doctor. He called me a few hours ago with the results of all the tests."
"What's wrong?"
"I had a miscarriage."
Brian nearly swerved off the road, "What?"
"I was pregnant, but I'm not anymore. I miscarried Brian."
"Oh God, are you okay?"
"I'm fine. I just don't understand it. We used protection every time, except for that once. But that was after the miscarriage."
"Condoms aren't always effective."
"Apparently... Brian, do you hate me?"
"For what?"
"Getting pregnant, losing the baby, everything..."
"No. Actually, I want a family. As for losing it, Aly, it's not your fault."
"I feel like it though. And I didn't even know."
"It's okay. I understand."
Alyson looked out the window at the stars.
"Aly, do you want kids?"
"Sure, someday. I want the works. A husband, a couple of kids, a dog, and a house with a little white icket fence."
Brian smiled, "Sounds like a plan to me."
Brian looked over at her, "Is that a hint?"
They pulled into Howie's driveway and Alyson chose not to answer the question.
