Chapter Twelve

“Where is he?” Eve demanded as I reappeared outside. “Where’s Brian?”

“He’s upstairs in his room,” I informed her.

“Was he crying?” I nodded grimly. “Oh no, what have I done?” Eve groaned, tears threatening to fall from her eyes.

“Stop it,” I commanded. “Crying isn’t going to get you anywhere. You have to go in there and get him back.”

“But how? The door’s locked.”

“Here, take my hand and I’ll bring you through the door,” I said, holding out my hand for her.

“Will that work?”

“I don’t know, I’ve never done it. But it’s worth a try.”

With that, Eve grabbed my hand and we walked through the door. “It worked! Thank you Miranda.” Eve quickly gave me a hug and we hurried up the winding staircase to Brian’s room.

“Where did I go wrong?” We could hear Brian ask the picture. “Where did I lose you?”

“You didn’t lose me,” Eve said softly as she stepped into the room.

Brian looked up in shock. “Eve! How did you get in?”

“I had a little help.” Eve threw me a smile, and then sat down next to Brian on his bed. “I’m sorry I overreacted like that Bri. I just thought that maybe you were using me to get over your girlfriend. But then I realized something. Why would you go out of your way to protect me if you didn’t truly care about me?”

“I do care,” Brian said, smiling at her.

“I love you, Brian Littrell.”

“I love you too.”

Eve threw her arms around Brian kissed him with all she had. She started crying softly.

“What’s wrong?” Brian asked, wiping away her tears.

“I’m just so happy,” she answered.

Brian cupped her chin in his hands and kissed her lips gently. “Well stop it. I never want to see you cry again for as long as I live.”

“As long as I’m with you, I have no reason to cry,” she replied smiling at him.

I smiled at the happy couple and turned to leave. ‘My work here is done.’

“Miranda!” I was shaken from my thoughts as I heard Maria’s voice. I had been sitting on the couch downstairs while Eve and Brian were busy upstairs. “Miranda you’ve done it!”

“Done what?”

“You’re an Angel!”

“No way!” I screamed, jumping up and giving Maria a hug. “Oh my God! This is awesome! Thank you so much Maria, I never could have done it without you!”

“Don’t thank me. You did this all on your own. You overcame your fears and brought Brian and Eve together. And for that, you earned your wings as a Guardian Angel. Now come along, you have to be getting along now.”

“Wait, can I please say goodbye to a few people?” I begged. “Please?”

“Well… okay. But make it fast.”

“Thank you.” I hurried up the steps and into Brian’s room. He and Eve were sleeping peacefully.

I decided to say goodbye to Eve first. I shook her gently and she stirred. “What?” she mumbled sleepily.

“It’s me. I just came to say goodbye, I’m leaving. I’m a Guardian Angel now,” I said proudly. “I owe it all to you. Thank you Eve, I’ll never forget you.”

“I’ll never forget you either,” she whispered, wrapping her arms around me. “Thank you for bringing us together. I’m eternally grateful.”

“You’re welcome. See you on the other side.” I let Eve drift back to sleep. I remembered how Maria had told me once that Angel’s came visit people in dreams, so I decided to try it for Brian. I got into his mind and sure enough, Brian was there.

“Miranda?” he asked in shock as he moved closer to me. “What are you doing here?”

“I came to say goodbye to you. I have to leave Brian.”

“But why?”

“Because I’m an Angel now. I’m so sorry that I couldn’t have contacted you earlier to let you know I was here, but it wasn’t allowed.”

“I knew you were with me,” he answered solemnly. “I always knew.”

“I’m so proud of you Brian. You and Eve make such a cute couple. And even though we weren’t meant to be together, remember this. I will always love you Brian Littrell. Always.”

“I’ll always love you too,” he answered, reaching out his arms to give me a hug. “Goodbye Miranda.”

“Goodbye Brian.” I kissed his cheek, then left.

As I appeared in Kat’s room, I noticed her and Kevin sleeping. I smiled and shook Kat awake. “Miranda?” she mumbled, rubbing her eyes as she sat up in her bed. “Tell me that I’m dreaming.”

“No, you’re not. I’m really here, but I won’t be for much longer. I’m an Angel, they need me up in Heaven.”

“But I need you down here,” she whispered. “You’re my best friend.”

“I’ll always be your best friend Katrina, remember that. But now I must go.”

“You can’t stay?” she asked, tears filling her eyes. “Not even for a little while?”

I shook my head. “No. But you have Eve. You guys will grow close, trust me. And there’s always the afterlife Kat. I’ll see you again in Heaven.”

Kat smiled at me. “I understand. Goodbye Miranda.”

“Goodbye.” Kat fell back asleep and I sighed. I was going to miss her, Eve, and Brian so much.

“Ready to go now?” Maria asked as she appeared in front of me.

“Yes,” I answered. Maria and I disappeared and I left the world as I knew it forever.
