Grammy-Nominated Backstreet Boys Perform in Disney Channel's Next 'In Concert' Special

BURBANK, Calif., April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Grammy-nominated Jive recording artists, Backstreet Boys, will perform in an hour-long Disney Channel special, "Backstreet Boys In Concert." The special world premieres, July 10, 1999, 7PM ET/PT. The concert will tape in New York on May 11 at the New Amsterdam Theater in front of 1,800 fans. Following the taping of their "In Concert" performance, the Backstreet Boys will release their much anticipated second U.S. album, "Millennium," on May 18, 1999. It is the follow-up to their self-titled Jive debut album, which just received the prestigious Diamond Award from the Recording Industry Association of America (R.I.A.A.), signifying sales of over 10 million in the U.S. alone.

"Backstreet Boys In Concert" will not only allow fans to catch the group -- Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Kevin Richardson, A.J. McLean and Brian Littrell -- performing on national television, but they'll also get a behind- the-scenes look as the multi-platinum superstars take on New York City.

"The Backstreet Boys are arguably one of the biggest names in pop music right now," said Tina Treadwell, executive director, talent development and music specials. "We are excited to have them join our 'In Concert' showcase."

Disney Channel has built a reputation on showcasing today's most prolific artists in the "In Concert" specials featuring "Le Ann Rimes In Concert," "Ray J In Concert with Brandy," "Jonny Lang In Concert," "'N Sync In Concert," "Cleopatra In Concert" and "Holidays In Concert." Most recently, Disney Channel teamed international pop superstars B*Witched and Five for "B*Witched and Five In Concert."

The Backstreet Boys, presently recognized as the biggest pop group in the world, have dominated worldwide charts and have received gold and platinum awards in 45 countries with over 28 million albums sold worldwide. Backstreet Boys have scored five U.S. Top Ten singles. Three of them, the #1 hit "I'll Never Break Your Heart," "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" and the current Top Ten hit "All I Have To Give," have achieved platinum certification. On the awards front, the group has won the 1998 MTV Video Music Award for Best Group Video, the 1996 and 1997 MTV Europe Viewers Choice Award, and 1998 Billboard Music Awards for Best Group and Best Adult Contemporary Album.

The band is excited to perform in The New Amsterdam Theater. Originally built in 1903, The New Amsterdam is best known as the home of the Ziegfeld Follies and has long been considered the crown jewel of Broadway's theaters. Designed by architects Henry Herts and Hugh Tallent, the New Amsterdam had the first major Art Noveau interior in the United States. In 1979, the New Amsterdam was designated a New York City Landmark and in 1984 sold to the 42nd Street Development Project. In 1995, The Walt Disney Company signed a lease with 42nd Street Development Project to restore and operate the house as a Broadway theatre. The development, design and restoration was initiated and managed throughout by Walt Disney Imagineering. In May 1997, the theater was re-opened with Alan Menken and Tim Rice's "King David" and is the home of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical "The Lion King."

Disney Channel, combining original series, movies and specials with timeless classics, is the first full-time general entertainment television network designed for kids and families. Disney Channel is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company.
