Prologue

"What do you mean I can't get an abortion!" Lydia Logan exclaimed.

“I'm sorry Ms. Logan; it's to late in your pregnancy to abort. It is illegal to abort a baby after the 6th month of pregnancy. Of course," the doctor lowered his voice. ",for an added fee I could do a late abortion."

“You mean illegal?" asked Lydia

"Yes."

"How much extra?"

"$200"

"I can't afford that, I can barely afford your regular rate."

"Well than Ms. Logan I can't help you. Next time you need an abortion come early or have the fee."

"But I can't take care of a baby! I have a life. I just can't bother with a baby!"

"Try the crisis pregnancy center across the street Ms. Logan, they may be able to arrange an adoption. Now please go and check with the receptionist for your bill. I have other patients to attend to."

7 weeks later

Two nurses were gossiping in a small coffee shop… "Did you hear about the baby girl at the clinic?"

"No, I didn't, what happened?"

“Well a lady came to our clinic to have an abortion." The nurse whispered " It was a late abortion so she paid the extra fee and everything was going just fine. But she was farther along in the pregnancy than she thought. The baby was born alive."

"You're joking! I've never heard of such a thing"

"I know neither have I. But its true. The nurse taking care of her named her Erin. The mother does not want to have anything to do with the baby, poor thing."

"Did the abortion have any effect on the baby?"

"Well she is definitely going to live, but her lungs were still undeveloped when the abortion was preformed. She'll probably have lung problems when she is older."

"What's the mothers name?"

“Oh, Lowden or Logan, something like that"

11 years later

"Keturah, I'll never forget thee." said Erin

"I won't either Erin. Someday I'll see thee again."

"I know, but maybe that won't be for a long time." The two little girls hugged.

"I am so worried though" sobbed Keturah. "What about thy lungs? What if thee dies because thee can't breathe? What if thy mother doesn't get thee to the hospital on time? What if she doesn't care."

"Maybe mom has changed," said Erin hopefully "No matter what happens though I 'll always remember thee"

"Come on, Erin, its time to leave!" called the social worker

"Coming!" She called back "Tell Joshua I'll miss him" Erin told Keturah.

"I will," Keturah answered "I know he wanted to be here to say goodbye, but he had to help the Gorens with their corn. He was telling me yesterday how hard it was going to be to have thee leave. He will miss having a foster sister. So will I.

"Erin come on!" yelled the social worker

"Good bye Keturah, I'll miss thee! Erin called out.
