Chapter Four

"Paging Doctor Sutherland, Paging Doctor Sutherland. Please report to the ICU." said the announcer booming through the speakers.

I stirred in my sleep and finally rose. I was still fully clothed and my neck was now stiff from the position I had been laying in. I sat up and looked at my daughter. She still layed there pale and fragile. I thought about the previous day and sat there shocked. I had hoped and prayed the the day had been a dream, but was proven wrong when I awoke from my slumber.

"Ah. Miss Riley, you are finally awake dear. I didn't want to desturb you. You looked so peaceful." said a short pudgy black woman breaking my thoughts.

"Oh forgive me. My name is Miss Wilson. I am Kaleea's nurse. I change her IV medication, give her sponge bathes and tend to her and your every need." she said while changing her IV bag.

"Oh please Miss Wilson call me Jen. Has her status changed since last night?" I said while carfully examing this new found face with my eyes. She was short but now too short. Maybe 5'2, she was past middle age. She had dark skin and her hair was also black but had some gray in it which also showed the signs of her age.She appeaered to be a sweet young lady.

"Oh no deary. She is still the same as she was last night. It is a shame though at her young age. Doctor Sutherland told me about her accident."

"Yes. It is. She is only four, but she has so much to live for and so much to experience and it hurts me so much to see her lying here so helpless."

"Yes ma'am I know the position you are sitting in right now. I think I will leave you alone to have some quiet time with her. Remember she can hear you.

"Thank you Miss Wilson."

"You are very welcome Jen"

And with those words she left. For some reason this woman had reminded me soo much of my Grandmother. So lighthearted and sweet. She seemed so caring and from that little conversation; I could tell why she was a nurse. She trully cared for people and they're well-being. She was an angel in disguise.

Breaking my thoughts, she ran back into the room.

"Wait. Jen. There is a man that has been waiting out here all night. He said he wanted to see Kaleea."

"A man?" I said quizzicallly. No one new about this yet. Who wants to come see her?I thought to myself.

"Yes. His name is Mr. McLean and he would like to see Kaleea."

"I guess he could come in but only for a little while."

"Ok. I will send him in."

With that she swiftly walked out of the room and closed the door behind her. Within minutes it opened and in walked AJ. He looked horrible. Like he had just woken up. His hair was a mess, he had bags under his eyes, and his eyes were also very droopy. For a minute, just looking at him, made me feel sorry for him. But then I snapped back into reality.

"Hi" he said almost inaudibly.

"Hello." I replied so coldly that you could freeze water in the room.

"Look, Miss Riley, I am terribly sorry for this, really I am. I never meant to hurt her."

"Look. No one ever means tohurt anybody. But you know what. You ran the stop sign, and you ran away from it. Ok. You never stopped to think'Am I doing the right thing?' Did you? No. You wanted to cover your ass, and you know what? That shows a lot about you. People like you should never have a license." I yelled so coldly. I was getting pissed off.

Just as he opened his mouth to speak, there was a loud piercing beep. I looked over to the bed and her heart rate monitor line went flat.

"Oh no!" I cried and ran to the door. I pulled it open and ran to the middle of the hallway.

"Please. Someone. Help!" I screamed down the hallway. With that I ran back into the room and right to her bedside. Next to her was AJ, holding her hand and praying.

"Please Leea. Don't leave me. The Doctor is almost here." I said grabbing her hand.

With that a Doctor and a whole team of nurses ran to her side. "Please ma'am. Step away and let the Doctors work." said a nurse and she p'ushed me away.

I bursted out in tears and almost fell, just as I almost hit the ground, I felt a strong pair of hands grab me. I looked up, and much to my dismay, I found that it was AJ who those hands belonged to.
