The Pain

Past

The doctors knew that, with all the injures that she had, there was no way she was going to make it.

They let all in her room. As soon as I saw her almost lifeless body in that hospital bed, I broke down. I sat down in the hard plastic chair beside her bed. I put my hand in hers. I felt her grip tighten around my fingers.

I knew now how she had felt when she came to visit me in the hospital when I was five. She was the only one that believed that I was going to make it through. But she had to listen to everyone telling her that I wasn’t going to make it. But there was one difference between the two cases. She was dying here before my eyes and there wasn’t a thing I could do to help her. She wasn’t going to make it.

"I’m going to take care of your little girl. Don’t worry. Nat, I am going to take good care of her and the guys are going to keep an eye on her too. Don’t hold on anymore if you don’t want to. I understand and so does Brianna. We all understand."

Brianna ran over to me and climbed up in my lap. "I love you Mommy. I love you lots Mommy." She kissed the hand that I was holding. Then someone came over and took her out of my lap.

"I love you Nat. I love you Natalie Carver. We all love you. Don’t you ever forget that! We are all going to take care of Brianna. I will raise her like she was my little girl. It’s going to be OK. Brianna is going to be OK. I’m going to be OK. Just don’t forget that we love you. We will always love you." As I said this, I felt her grip on my fingers loosen and saw a smile slowly spread over her mouth. I could tell that she was at peace and that she was leaving her pain behind.
