Two Divided By Zero
Heather sensed something was wrong the
minute she stepped out of her car.
One hand hovering over her concealed
gun she headed into the house.
Inside
everything was just as it was left.
In the bedroom she found AJ.
"What's
wrong?" she asked watching him
rifle through drawers.
"Where's
the money?"
"Um, hon, you're looking for money in the drawer?
Have
you lost your mind?" she demanded,
her premonition not dimming any.
"Where
did I put it then?" he asked.
"Top shelf of the closet, far right."
Heather told him.
"Thanks." He told her, muffled by the closet.
"No problem lover." She replied, inspecting
her nails. "When
are we meeting him?"
"At midnight." AJ told her.
"Which
is in half an hour. Is Beaken driving?"
AJ nodded. "I don't trust
anyone else." He inspected
his outfit and then threw on a pair of shades.
"Let's
go."
"You know, I will never understand why you
feel the need to wear your sunglasses at night."
Heather commented.
AJ shrugged but didn't offer explanation.
She shrugged her shoulders
and shook out her hair.
Rain made a pattering sound on the deck
outside
bringing a smile to her lips.
It would make everything easier.
With a
glance outside, she followed AJ
out to the car where Beaken was waiting.
There
were no words exchanged. Beaken knew his
orders and silently started the car,
pulling
out onto the darkened street.
Heather nervously looked out the
window onto the street, shiny with rain.
Usually she wasn't ever nervous
about jobs but for
some reason she couldn't shake the feeling of
impending
disaster.
"Something's going to
happen." She whispered into
AJ's ear.
He looked at her with alarm but before he could reply
his cell
phone rang.
He punched the button and held it to his ear,
listening to
the other party.
The car was silent and finally he spoke to the
other
person. "You're sure? Okay, yeah,
thanks." AJ hung up the phone.
He
turned toward Beaken. "Change of
plans." He barked. "Head toward
the trainstation."
"Why?" Heather seemed confused. "What's
wrong?"
"Someone heard a rumor." AJ told her. "Lazaro's
been
tipped off about us. We can't follow through now.
So we're taking the
late train out of here."
"I don't think you are." Beaken said
from the front seat, pulling a gun on them.
"What the hell do you
think you're
doing Beaken?" AJ demanded harshly.
"What does
it look like I'm doing boss?" He twisted the
word untilit sounded ugly.
"I'm tagging you and her
and taking the money andsplitting. Either that
or
I'll report you two to the heads and berewarded
that way."
"Bastard."
Heather hissed.
"I'm just protecting my interests my dear. You two
weren't
going to give me a cut. I'm just here to
do your bidding, just an accessory for
you to use.
Just a part of the car." Beaken said bitterly.
AJ and
Heather looked at each other. They couldn't
deny his accusations but they also
couldn't let
him proceed with his plan.
Their eyes exchanged a whole
conversation while
their faces remained still. At AJ's silent instruction
Heather
slid her hand down the seat surreptitiously.
Beaken was still going off and
didn't even notice.
Her fingers touched a small plastic cylinder
and,
bringing it up,stabbed the syringe into
Beaken's shoulder.
"What
the fuck? What the hell are you trying to
do bitch?" Beaken shouted right
before he
slumped over in the seat.
"He won't remember anything
in the
morning." AJ told her.
"Why not kill him?" Heather
questioned.
AJ shrugged. "Why leave a larger trail than necessary?"
"I guess that's true. So what's the plan?
Do we take the car?"
"No." AJ shook his head. "We leave it here.
We catch a
cab to the train station and catch the
late train out."
"Why
the train station? Why not catch a
plane?" she asked.
"Because
they'll be expecting us to take a plane."
He explained. "If they know
at all they'll be waiting
for us either there or at home. I have enough money
on me to just pay cash for two
tickets out of here and we can catch a plane
somewhere else."
Heather thought longingly for a minute of their
spacious home overlooking the ocean. Then she
nodded. "Let's go."
She whispered.
He took her hand and pulled her
out of the car and into
the dark and rain.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
"Have
you seen the view in this place?" he called.
She came in the room drying
her newly dyed
hair. "Yes lover." She smirked. "It's even more
amazing at night. Although if you'd been here you
would have known that..."
"You know I had business to attend to." He told her.
"I
know." She tossed him a grin and began to
breeze past him but he caught
her around the waist
and pulled her close.
"You know, you look good
as a
redhead." He commented, kissing her neck.
"It's not red.
It's auburn." She told him haughtily.
"Well whatever it is it's
sexy as hell." He murmured
still nuzzling her neck.
"You know,"
she began huskily. "I think I could
like New York."
"Why
don't you give the grand tour?" he suggested.
"Starting with the bedroom."
He pushed her in front of him down the hallway to the
spacious bedroom.
Hair, clothing, accents, names, location
all changed, but despite everything
there
were some things that never changed.
THE END!!!
