Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 7:58:53 PM)
Hi Debby

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 7:58:59 PM)
How are you doing tonight?

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 7:59:06 PM)
Pretty well, thank you.

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 7:59:12 PM)
Right now we

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 7:59:30 PM)
Right now we're working on math so I might get distracted

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 7:59:57 PM)
How old is Sarah?

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:00:06 PM)
Not a problem I understand...we just finished up homework and playing a game and im letting the kids have a dish of icecream

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:00:14 PM)
Sarah is 8,,will be 9 in July

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:00:21 PM)
How old is Matt

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:00:26 PM)
Matt's 13.5

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:00:58 PM)
How long ago was Matt diagnosed with CAPD?

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:01:11 PM)
January

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:01:41 PM)
What type of remeadiation was recommended?

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:01:49 PM)
We have suspected something for some time. Since he was little in fact. But it was nothing we could really get a handle on.

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:02:44 PM)
His biggest problem is background noise. We hadn't really wanted him in Special Ed, but it was the only way we could get the teachers to give him notes.

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:02:52 PM)
We suspected trouble since Sarah was 2..she was diagnosed when she was 6

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:03:16 PM)
Did the aud recommend an FM trainer?

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:03:38 PM)
Our older daughter is hearing impaired and has had services since she was in K. She used a trainer, but it wasn't suggest for Matt.

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:04:11 PM)
Sarah started asking the FM last fall.....it's been very helpful for her

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:04:22 PM)
Actually, it was mentioned that it might help, but a middle school student would probably never use it.

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:04:54 PM)
That's what happened with Amy. We made a deal with her that she wouldn't have to wear it as long as her grades stayed up. They did.

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:04:55 PM)
is the aud doing any type of therapy?

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:06:00 PM)
We live in North Dakota and, while getting into speical ed was too difficult, we don't have the range of services that many others have.

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:06:26 PM)
was he dx by the school or privately?

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:06:26 PM)
I just purchased earobics and he started that.

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:06:48 PM)
We had it done privately through the University of ND.

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:06:58 PM)
we've not tried earobics yet..i am hoping to do it this summer

hi joan...How are you tonight?

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:07:54 PM)
The university was the only location that tests for CAPD.

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:07:57 PM)
did the U of ND recommend any noise training therapy?

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:07:59 PM)
Hi Joan

joan (ID=43) (May 11, 2000 8:09:35 PM)
Hello

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:09:40 PM)
He didn't know much about it. Matthew has always been very sensitive to noise, since he was a baby. But it wasn't until last spring that we realized how much. He walked into our computer room and thought the computer was going to explode. My husband heard nothing. It was the high pitch of the computer monitor.

hi Steve

Steve (ID=44) (May 11, 2000 8:10:25 PM)
hi there

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:10:46 PM)
Is that what made you take Matt to the aud?

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:11:21 PM)
JSo... We had him tested and he was hearing at -10dB with pain thresholds at 80 instead of over 100. The local school for handicapped children was beginning to do AIT. It really helped.

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:11:48 PM)
I'd like to learn more about AIT.....that is new to me

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:12:11 PM)
Joan,,feel free to jump in any time *S*

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:12:32 PM)
There is a great book about it. It is used very often with kids that are autistic. Give me a minute and I'll find the site.

joan (ID=43) (May 11, 2000 8:13:00 PM)
Thanks, I am trying to get the kids to bed so I may not be able to stay on long. I'll listen for now.

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:13:11 PM)
I've sent to a few places for information,,but have been busy enough that I havne't been able to read through much of it

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:13:32 PM)
My kids have to get t bed in afew too tonight..they are up a bit late

joan (ID=43) (May 11, 2000 8:14:54 PM)
Debbie,

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:16:51 PM)
yes joan?

joan (ID=43) (May 11, 2000 8:18:32 PM)
Sorry, pressed the wrong key. Are you familar with kids who are suspected of having CAPD, but once tested by an audiologist, and are diagnosed not to have it, but display many of the characteristics on a CAPD checklist..... what could it be (and it isn't ADD or Peti Mal).... child doesn't consistently follow directions, stay on task, appear not to listen and so forth... or, can kids just end up in their own world and decide not to listen? The child is my 10 year old and I am perplexed.

Hi all

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:20:18 PM)
Joan...let me ask you a few questions.....was the aud you saw familiar wiht CAPD? what was their approach to CAPD?

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:20:21 PM)
hi Faith

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:20:52 PM)
Hi Faith! Debby, Here's the link for information about Auditory Integration Training: www.georgianainstitute.org

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:21:18 PM)
thank you Matt's Mom....will look at it in a bit

joan (ID=43) (May 11, 2000 8:21:39 PM)
yes Debbie, the leading audiologist in this field in my area. now that i started this, you will have to excuse me. Kids need some attention, dinner, and bed. I will join up at another time. Sorry.

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:22:01 PM)
Joan..we'll be here for a bit if you want to stop back

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:22:08 PM)
if not..have a great evening

joan (ID=43) (May 11, 2000 8:22:19 PM)
thanks and maybe another evening.

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:23:20 PM)
i took sarah for a reevaluation this last week....almost forgot how frustrating the results can be....

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:23:30 PM)
I think her question was interesting. Many times Matt would go into his little world. We said that if he weren't so outgoing he'd probably be autistic. That's how it started.

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:23:49 PM)
What are her symptoms and diagnosis?

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:24:03 PM)
Hey Faith, where are you from?

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:24:15 PM)
Sarah was initially dx 2 yrs ago....this reconfirmed the CAPD

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:24:26 PM)
Clermont, fl

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:24:50 PM)
Son or daughter... or both?

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:25:02 PM)
Faith,,I think we've talked before, haven't we?

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:25:06 PM)
son going into sixth grade

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:25:22 PM)
don't know if I'm ready for 5 teachers

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:25:27 PM)
im over in jacksonville.

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:25:28 PM)
yep

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:25:49 PM)
It hasn't been great. Mostly the background noise. He comes home exhausted

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:26:04 PM)
Oh matthew is 13.5 and finishing eighth grade

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:26:07 PM)
they took most of his accomaditions for regular class away next year

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:26:14 PM)
Why?

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:26:27 PM)
I just attended the conference in s carolina by dr ferre....one thing she talked about was kids coming home tired

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:26:55 PM)
They feel he doesn't need them

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:26:56 PM)
Yes, and then they have all the additional learning to do that they didn't get in class

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:27:14 PM)
He'll probably need them even more!

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:27:19 PM)
Faith..how is he doing in school?

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:27:27 PM)
that's what i think

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:27:45 PM)
In middle school here they start taking lecture notes. It has been awful!

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:28:06 PM)
A's and B's with a lot of keeping on top of his teacher, making sure he's not missing assignments

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:28:26 PM)
so let me guess....since he is getting good grades he dont need help?

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:28:30 PM)
Matt was only diagnosed in January and finally they started giving him the notes. His grades went up a whole letter grade.

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:28:35 PM)
I did get study guides done by the teachers

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:28:51 PM)
yes

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:29:05 PM)
but its hours of work on our part to keep him there

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:29:07 PM)
Does he change schools?

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:29:25 PM)
yes with rotating schedules each week

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:29:46 PM)
Faith, my daughter is only in third grade but I do understand what you are saying....Sarah is A/B honor roll because we work so hard with her

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:30:19 PM)
the teacher we have know doesn't care what he does

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:30:39 PM)
Matthew simply got discouraged and quit trying. Now that he's having success again he's beginnning to work.

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:30:57 PM)
what are you doing to motivate Matt?

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:31:33 PM)
we got a paper yesterday from a month ago saying he was mising assignments and they now some how are turned in

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:32:04 PM)
Faith....does hehave an IEP at all?

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:32:13 PM)
He's a tough one to motivate. Very stubborn. Would rather sit in an empty room than give in

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:32:23 PM)
Math calls, Ill be back

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:32:29 PM)
Brendon trys to keep up with his younger brother, also loves his pokeman games that he does very well with

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:32:36 PM)
ok Matt's mom

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:33:19 PM)
I have an IEP meeting tomorrow about my youngest one....for her speech therapy

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:33:29 PM)
I'm worried about sending him to boy scout camp this summer but feel it will do him good

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:33:59 PM)
we finally go for audiology eval. early June

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:34:04 PM)
How does he do around kids his age? Does he interact well?

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:34:52 PM)
where are you having the eval done Faith?

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:35:13 PM)
I feel he's a little imature for his age but others don't he will have his younger(older, haha ) brother there with him

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:35:22 PM)
Arnold Palmer

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:35:31 PM)
I'm back. Camp has been wonderful for Matthew. The first time he went while his sisters were there, but now he just loves to go.

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:35:48 PM)
Sarah acts a bit young for her age also

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:36:11 PM)
But don't you think that in some ways they are old for their age?

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:36:15 PM)
Tried UCF but too long of wait schools says testing that they have done is fine

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:36:19 PM)
Sarah's not been to camp....dont think im ready to let her go yet..

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:36:45 PM)
I mean sometimes they seem so wise

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:36:47 PM)
we just went to the U of F in gainesville for testing last week

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:37:13 PM)
yep in some ways but he have a brother who is 20 months younger (4th grade) that can do 6th grade work and is very mature for his age

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:37:32 PM)
That's very true Matt's mom.....sometimes I wonder if all the testing and retesting is right...Sarah is at the point she looks forward to going to the dr.....

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:38:05 PM)
have to tuck the girls in quick..brb

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:38:05 PM)
I know what you mean, he's never been away from me more than 4 days

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:38:19 PM)
Matt has two older sisters, both excellent students. When he was little, both girls thought he was the smartest of the group. Then he started school.

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:39:02 PM)
How long is camp?

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:39:41 PM)
Brendon had speech problems but his brother always can out do him in everything but playing the game boy for some reason Brendon can process that

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:39:51 PM)
Sunday to Saturday

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:40:11 PM)
He'll probably do better than you will!

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:40:13 PM)
Just being nervous mom

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:40:34 PM)

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:40:46 PM)
I have a 17 year old girl. Now thats nervous!

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:41:04 PM)

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:41:33 PM)
I'm a director of a preschool guess you could say I have 120 kids

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:42:17 PM)
I bet he said no

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:42:33 PM)
he just shook his head ....hubby is 10 years older than me

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:42:36 PM)
I think anyone with a child struggles, struggles right along with them. We're all overprotective! I keep telling our kids that it's our job!

Matt's Mom (ID=42) (May 11, 2000 8:42:40 PM)
More math

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:43:04 PM)
Glad its the end of the school year!!!!

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:43:38 PM)
the only bad thing about the end of the year for me is our teacher has been wonderful and now we' have no idea who we'll have next year

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:43:53 PM)
This will be my kids longest summer break, just got off of year round school

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:44:08 PM)
I'm so glad you had a great teacher

debbie (ID=41) (May 11, 2000 8:44:46 PM)
I'd put my teacher up for teacher of the year in a heartbeat!! She's been supportive and understanding..too bad the school distict wasnt the same

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:45:40 PM)
I'd kill for another great teacher haven't had one in two years...Can you pick who he wants?

Faith (ID=45) (May 11, 2000 8:45:46 PM)

Matt's Mom (ID=57) (May 11, 2000 9:24:14 PM)
We were talking about teachers. That'

deb (ID=59) (May 11, 2000 9:24:23 PM)
sorry i missed you online earlier graeme.....i was away from puter

Matt's Mom (ID=57) (May 11, 2000 9:25:12 PM)
Thats the one reason we had Matt put into special ed. We never had to use it for Amy because she was a good student, never stressed, mostly because she just didn't hear

dolfrog (ID=58) (May 11, 2000 9:25:35 PM)
I was just logging on and off trying to send an email from my old puter now Iains to my new one to transfer some files

Matt's Mom (ID=57) (May 11, 2000 9:25:53 PM)
With matthew its different. He'll do fine if supported by a teacher. Unfortunately they are few and far between.

deb (ID=59) (May 11, 2000 9:26:00 PM)
Sarah actally loves school...

Matt's Mom (ID=57) (May 11, 2000 9:26:08 PM)
His schedule for next year looks great.

dolfrog (ID=58) (May 11, 2000 9:26:21 PM)
I wish I did not hear it would stop my CAPD

deb (ID=59) (May 11, 2000 9:26:42 PM)
graeme..can i ask you a few questions?

Matt's Mom (ID=57) (May 11, 2000 9:26:47 PM)
I really believe that girls do so much in school. Teachers teach the way girls learn.

dolfrog (ID=58) (May 11, 2000 9:26:49 PM)
yes

deb (ID=59) (May 11, 2000 9:27:38 PM)
what type of things do you do now to help compensate for the CAPD?

deb (ID=59) (May 11, 2000 9:27:58 PM)
what do you mean teach the way girls learn?

dolfrog (ID=58) (May 11, 2000 9:29:26 PM)
basically you have to start by saying i am going to make mistakes and biuld routines in my daily chore to correct the errorsthat i might make

Matt's Mom (ID=57) (May 11, 2000 9:29:57 PM)
Girls are generally quieter and love listening and reading. Boys like to DO things. Guys generally don't like talking and stop listening. So when teachers start lecturing, they stop learning.

deb (ID=59) (May 11, 2000 9:30:11 PM)
if questions get too personal graeme please dont hesitate to tell me...i wish i understood the way sarah heard things and processed things.....

Matt's Mom (ID=57) (May 11, 2000 9:30:23 PM)
Once they start doing projects, the boys do so much better.

deb (ID=59) (May 11, 2000 9:30:51 PM)
do you know when you aren't processing information properly?

deb (ID=59) (May 11, 2000 9:31:09 PM)
Matt's mom...does Matt have trouble with orgainzation?

Matt's Mom (ID=57) (May 11, 2000 9:31:10 PM)
Did you go out to the Ladel Rat Rotten Hut site?

dolfrog (ID=58) (May 11, 2000 9:31:36 PM)
Matts Mum boys i have 3 have an ego problem about aSKING QUEASTIONS WHEN THEY DO NOT UNDERSTAND THINGS

Matt's Mom (ID=57) (May 11, 2000 9:31:37 PM)
What organization :-)

Matt's Mom (ID=57) (May 11, 2000 9:32:35 PM)
Yes. Boys feel the need to independent. When was the last time you heard of a guy asking for directions?

hi

dolfrog (ID=58) (May 11, 2000 9:33:49 PM)
You only know when you have processed information correctly when it is reproduced correctly at a later date, or when you start making mistake it has gone wrong, or you do notknow what to do . this is when you gamble and guess

Matt's Mom (ID=57) (May 11, 2000 9:35:15 PM)
I posted it yesterday. Try listening to it. You'll get the story but really have to think about it. And listen and interpret what you hear. I think the kids don't have enough experience to do that.

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:35:34 PM)
sorry...im back again!

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:36:09 PM)
i have the story..i was wondering how accurate the interpretation was

Matt's Mom (ID=57) (May 11, 2000 9:36:19 PM)
We can get the story because we know what it should be. But only because we have the experience.

dolfrog (ID=58) (May 11, 2000 9:36:41 PM)
I can understand the story at all yet Iain can

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:36:53 PM)
I'd love to present the story as a book on tape at the school

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:37:13 PM)
graeme i cant get 1/2 the story either!

Matt's Mom (ID=57) (May 11, 2000 9:37:30 PM)
Listen to it as you're reading.

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:37:37 PM)
how are you tonight Kman?

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:37:44 PM)
i will...have to try it again...

kmanbam (ID=61) (May 11, 2000 9:37:55 PM)
good, thanks

kmanbam (ID=61) (May 11, 2000 9:38:07 PM)
what's the story?

faith (ID=60) (May 11, 2000 9:38:24 PM)
the only problem with waiting to see if you process it correctly is you don't know until it's to late, like trying to balance your checkbook once a year, you could be in deep trouble by then.

Matt's Mom (ID=57) (May 11, 2000 9:38:36 PM)
Ladel Rat Rotten Hut

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:38:59 PM)
it's a version of little red riding hood the way someone with a processing problem may hear it

dolfrog (ID=58) (May 11, 2000 9:39:05 PM)
if you have CAPD then if you have trianed your self to interpet certain sounds and ignore others as i think I have it causes problems

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:39:41 PM)
Graeme is the communication on the computer easier for you since it is visual?

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:41:37 PM)
One question I have about the way schools give tests to the kids is that they give the kids evaluation tests in a one on one basis....that is nto challenging to a child like a classroom is

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:43:33 PM)
the server i am using is experiencing growing pains....im tyring to be patient and hang in with there..i appreciate you all's patience..

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:44:00 PM)
last question..is written communication via the computer easier for you since it is not auditory and is visual?

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:44:13 PM)
welcome back faith

kmanbam (ID=61) (May 11, 2000 9:44:37 PM)
debbie, I agree about your testing statement. They give them one-on-one, in quiet and give them all the 'time' they need.

dolfrog2 (ID=63) (May 11, 2000 9:44:42 PM)
yes much I can read and reread what people have writen

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:45:06 PM)
i know Sarah absolutely loves "chatting"

faith (ID=64) (May 11, 2000 9:45:19 PM)
having problems with computer

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:45:21 PM)
kman...have you questioned the school on that?

kmanbam (ID=61) (May 11, 2000 9:45:26 PM)
yes

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:45:28 PM)
faith is it your puter or the room?

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:45:33 PM)
what did they say kman?

dolfrog2 (ID=63) (May 11, 2000 9:45:38 PM)
if i miss part of an email i can read it again and agian until i understand it

faith (ID=64) (May 11, 2000 9:46:04 PM)
lost my server connection then couldn't get my modem back up

kmanbam (ID=61) (May 11, 2000 9:46:05 PM)
that they did no timed testing and they felt she was functioning just fine in the classroom also.

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:46:23 PM)
sarah is just learning to type so chatting gives her the time it takes to organize her thoughts while she types

dolfrog2 (ID=63) (May 11, 2000 9:46:49 PM)
with verbal communication i may not be able to process what is being said there and then

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:47:52 PM)
graeme...is there one thing you find more frustrating than others?

dolfrog2 (ID=63) (May 11, 2000 9:48:18 PM)
typing gives you time the problem is that you can not control when you can process information and when you can not

dolfrog2 (ID=63) (May 11, 2000 9:48:37 PM)
telephones

faith (ID=64) (May 11, 2000 9:48:38 PM)
have many kids been chatting on fridays?

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:48:43 PM)
do you have times that you process better than others?

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:48:54 PM)
not really faith..have not really promoted the kids chat yet.

faith (ID=64) (May 11, 2000 9:49:07 PM)
ii always forget about it

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:49:33 PM)
i do want to let you all know there may be some upcoming schedule changes.....once again my work schedule may change...

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:49:43 PM)
would you be interested in a kids chat faith?

faith (ID=64) (May 11, 2000 9:49:50 PM)
yes

dolfrog2 (ID=63) (May 11, 2000 9:49:59 PM)

b'smom (ID=65) (May 11, 2000 9:51:26 PM)
hi, I have to leave but I'll come again soon

dolfrog2 (ID=63) (May 11, 2000 9:51:30 PM)
kids find chat sometimes difficult during term time we found this with the CAPD forum

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:51:35 PM)
ok...hope to see you soon

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:51:59 PM)
i thought maybe friday night would be a good time for kids chat..usually no homework

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:52:25 PM)
how about instead of a weekly kids chat...a biweekly?

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:52:35 PM)
at least til the kids get use to it?

faith (ID=64) (May 11, 2000 9:52:51 PM)
that would be good

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:53:20 PM)
faith...would you like to try tomorrow night or next week?

dolfrog2 (ID=63) (May 11, 2000 9:53:26 PM)
I think they have to make a link with another kid so that they want to come back

faith (ID=64) (May 11, 2000 9:53:29 PM)
i think it would help Brendon to talk with kids with the same problem

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:54:37 PM)
i knwo the few nights sarah was in here she talked to marge's daughter about the back street boys and music...they seemed to enjoy it

dolfrog2 (ID=63) (May 11, 2000 9:54:41 PM)
On my new site there is an option for verbal chats and iain wnts to try it out in the holidays

faith (ID=64) (May 11, 2000 9:54:54 PM)
he goes to resource room but everyone has different problem, a lot of behavior ones

debbie (ID=62) (May 11, 2000 9:55:30 PM)
faith...could you meet earlier in the evening for a kids chat so that lain could join us?

dolfrog2 (ID=63) (May 11, 2000 9:57:58 PM)
Iain will have his own email address soon when we get the disc from the server. He is already part og the buddy link and so we could start an informal chat

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:12:27 PM)
It is not as bad as it seems right now

hi Donna

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:13:12 PM)
Iain has become a socialite and is not doing his homework?????????????????

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:13:12 PM)
hi Donna

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:13:13 PM)
Hi. I finally made it.

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:13:30 PM)
is that you that i just messaged?

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:13:34 PM)
no he is going away for the weekend to a scout camp

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:13:46 PM)
Yes. Thanks. I really wanted to chat with you about your daughter.

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:13:49 PM)
ok..we'll get him in a chat another time

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:14:11 PM)
did you have questions about Sarah?

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:14:33 PM)
Max,,,,is the school offering you any help?

donna (ID=71) (May 0011, 2000 10:14:52 PM)
Well. Yes. I am very confused about the CAPD and do not know what to do. Erica's school wants to retain her. I was chatting with Woody about it the other night.

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:15:31 PM)
Donna I remember reading the archives about it that night.....Woody is my husband and helps me out with the chat

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:16:08 PM)
My son was retained last year and they are trying to do the same this year as well.

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:16:22 PM)
Do you have any advice? She will be in a learning center over the summer. But her school feels it will not be enough.

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:16:29 PM)
max...do you think retaining your son helped any?

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:16:34 PM)
Did it help him

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:16:38 PM)
they wanted to do that to Brendon but have another son right behind him

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:16:39 PM)
CAPD is a processing thing and as iain is finding out it is not what uyou think that you understoood when you were in class that counts, but what youunderstand a day later that counts

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:17:25 PM)
No, he has the same difficulties as last year. This does not go away.

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:17:34 PM)
Well how do we help these kids. My daughter has not been officially diagnosed by an audiologist yet. But I am concerned about retaining her.

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:17:56 PM)
CAPD NEVER goes away I know

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:18:07 PM)
Max,, the advantage you have this year is that now you know what is wrong

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:18:12 PM)
I am glad you said that Max, I think that is proof that retaining does not help.

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:18:28 PM)
You have help them develop coping strategies

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:18:34 PM)
How do you know Dolfrog?

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:18:47 PM)
I have CAPD

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:18:56 PM)
in Florida we have the right to say no to retain

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:19:10 PM)
For those of you who do not know....Graeme is an adult with CAPD and he has kids with CAPD also

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:19:29 PM)
When did you find out Dolfrog?

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:19:55 PM)
Graeme can offer a unique perspective to many of us

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:19:58 PM)
When my son Iain was diagnosed 18 months ago

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:20:13 PM)
We have rights here in Long Island as well. The final decision is up to us to retain

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:20:37 PM)
What have you done for Iain to help him and what grade is he in now?

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:20:41 PM)
I knew I had a difficulty but not exactly what it was

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:20:42 PM)
I started a battle at my sons school . I was told he would be retained., and I filled for a Due Process Hearing and Mediation.

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:21:03 PM)
What is that?

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:21:09 PM)
Max, do you have an advocate or anyone going to the hearing with you?

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:21:11 PM)
lol

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:21:16 PM)
Have any of you been involved in that?

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:21:36 PM)
I've not been. but have a feeling im about to be

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:21:37 PM)
yes and got nowhere with the schools

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:22:08 PM)
What is a Due Process Hearing and Mediation?

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:22:17 PM)
best thing is to find an advocate or get as much info as you can

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:22:18 PM)
We have told Iain that he has CAPD and tried to explain it to hiom, BUT you have to find your own ways of coping because they are personal to you and you life experiances

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:22:40 PM)
Due Process Hearing and Medaition are when the school refuses services and you dispute them..you have the right to a hearing

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:22:40 PM)
Yes I have a Child Special Education Advocte here in Florida, and she has been helping me.

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:22:53 PM)
where are you in florida max?

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:22:54 PM)
my son can't stand to loud places

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:23:16 PM)
niether can I

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:23:19 PM)
My daughter can't stand loud places or noise either.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:23:38 PM)
ear plugs help some

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:23:54 PM)
I'm in Miami. And my son, hates loud noises too.

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:23:54 PM)
We have to repeat things over several times before she gets it.

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:23:59 PM)
it is a distraction and you can not concetrate on any one source

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:24:10 PM)
the reason i asked max is i am in jacksonville

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:24:14 PM)
My wife stil does

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:25:02 PM)
I do not always process what is said immediately , but i can parrot it back

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:25:08 PM)
My daughter's reading level is one year below what it should be and her math skills are terribly weak. Handwriting is terrible also.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:25:24 PM)
i'm outside of Orlando

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:25:45 PM)
Two years ago Sarah had sever difficulty in proccessing in background noise....her latest evaluation showed she is doing much better in that area.

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:26:01 PM)
I ain has finally aught up with his reading, spelling and writing, but his maths is still weak

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:26:15 PM)
my son is 3 years behind in reading math on level handwritting has gotten much better this year

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:26:55 PM)
he is very artistic, would love to draw all day

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:26:55 PM)
I listen to rock music, basically if you have a familiar background noise you are OK

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:26:58 PM)
Faith, your son was retained?

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:27:23 PM)
Thats great Debbie, any progress is so tough.

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:27:26 PM)
Erica loves to draw also. She too would draw all day. She has all different art sets.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:27:38 PM)
held him out of kindergaten due to year around school and June birthday

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:27:55 PM)
Iain has won awards for his poems, and is quite the welfare worker at school.

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:28:28 PM)
Debbie, how did you get your daughter to make progress?

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:28:32 PM)
I ain is god at art,

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:28:34 PM)
max now we are facing challenges in other areas of processing...seems never ending...when i found that out at the beginning of the week i was so depressed..but im starting to understand a bit better

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:29:08 PM)
What other areas? You have to excuse me , I am fairly new to all this.

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:29:41 PM)
CAPD is only part of the processing game

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:30:05 PM)
Donna we went through the Fast ForWord program at the same time we got an FM trainer

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:30:18 PM)
now she is haveing integration problems...

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:30:24 PM)
Really it is processing any new information and for kids it is ALL NEW

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:30:34 PM)
You mean sensory intengration.

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:31:36 PM)
It was very hard for me too., Debbie. I was divorced 2 years ago and called my sons father (I'm female,do not let my cat's name fool you) and he was not intrested at all. I was to much for him.

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:31:56 PM)
her left ear is not processing near where her right ear is...she is showing a left ear deficit

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:32:51 PM)
i dont have all the infromation yet... am awaiting the official results

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:32:58 PM)
That is too bad. I hope it works out. I do not even know Erica's specific problems yet. I guess the audiologist will tell me more after she is evaluated.

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:33:38 PM)
Max, sometimes I feel my husband is not interested either. He says I am obsessed with it.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:34:23 PM)
it's hard not to be its our kids future

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:34:46 PM)
donna and max sometimes i do feel obsessed with capd...between the site, the chat and helping sarah...alot of my time is devoted to capd,,it's pretty much become a way of life around here.....im delighted woody is starting to pitch in on the chats and trying to learn

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:34:50 PM)
All I do is ready more and more about it. I feel the more I know the more I can help my daughter.

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:35:09 PM)
my wife anf family think I am ob sessed with it, but it affect a CAPS whole way of living not just at school but at home and with friends and at work

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:36:00 PM)
In addition to the CAPD Erica also has a mild seizure condition (absence seizures)

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:36:24 PM)
That condition was diagnosed two and half years ago.

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:36:38 PM)
Woody understand this has become a major part of our life...not just for sarah but in an effort to help others.....i want to open a national non profit organiztion that would disseminate information on capd

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:36:41 PM)
my husband just changed work hours so I could take another job now that he's dealing with it he understands more of what is going on he use to think I was crazy

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:37:33 PM)
he never understood how long it would take to do homework

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:37:34 PM)
woody still is not involved with the aud or the school...but at least he is trying harder..

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:37:59 PM)
It is very hard. And men have a hard time with this.

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:38:04 PM)
Oh......, the homework. Tell me about it. The cries and breaks

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:38:31 PM)
graeme i'm not sure if i had told you abou the non profit.......it is where i am headed to...this will hopefully develop full time

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:38:37 PM)
I thought it was just me and/or my husband. He will not even read a book about it and gets mad when I tell him to

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:38:58 PM)
Home work getr easier the older they become but then other problems occur like social intrgration, and other teenage things

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:39:04 PM)
donna..i understand that...i challenged the school to do homework with sarah on monday nights. *LLOL*

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:39:21 PM)
donna maybe he would talk to woody

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:39:28 PM)
it hard to except that your child has a problem and that you need to do things to help them

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:39:28 PM)
What is LLOL?

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:40:06 PM)
oops laugh out loud

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:40:23 PM)
Believe me I know. My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS in march (Pervasive Developmental Disorder) and now Erica. I don't know which way to turn

dolfrog (ID=69) (May 11, 2000 10:40:30 PM)
The Children want to be independant most of all, too much help gets in the way

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:41:11 PM)
Yes, dolfrog, I have noticed that. She gets angry if we help too much, but yet she wants the security of knowing you are there to help with the homework.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:41:19 PM)
thats ture but we need to help them become organized so they don't loose it

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:42:07 PM)
Yes, I agree. Erica's organization needs a lot of help. She is always losing things and forgeting things. It could be the same routine things, but it does not matter.

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:42:18 PM)
i sat on monday and talked to a doctor about sarah's capd and started crying all over again about her CAPD...it's been awhile since i'd done that

dolfrog (ID=72) (May 11, 2000 10:42:24 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:42:33 PM)
i had t end the converstaion..

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:43:03 PM)
I don't think the sadness ever leaves.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:43:29 PM)
you need help to find the best way to get them organized and then help them stay that way

dolfrog (ID=72) (May 11, 2000 10:43:31 PM)
my pc threw a wobbly

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:44:01 PM)
I understand where your coming from

dolfrog (ID=72) (May 11, 2000 10:44:45 PM)
yes Faith you need to help them develop coping strategies and routines, and do not use to general vocabulary

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:44:50 PM)
it takes going through the backpack everyday puting papers together and lots and lots of reminders

dolfrog (ID=72) (May 11, 2000 10:45:19 PM)
Visual reminders are best

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:45:23 PM)
Every day I go through the backpack and remind her to put her homework away and her glasses. The same reminders over and over.

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:45:42 PM)
Dolfrog, what do you mean by general vocabulary?

dolfrog (ID=72) (May 11, 2000 10:45:59 PM)
DON'T PUT ANY THING AWAY put away forgotten

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:46:21 PM)
my sister and i were talking one day about listening skills and how to sharpen them.....if adults had the skills we have to teach our kids....they would be conducting seminars on how to listen effectively for corporations

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:46:25 PM)
its just like go clean your room

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:46:27 PM)
I meant after the homework was done.

dolfrog (ID=72) (May 11, 2000 10:46:47 PM)
Be specif like brush your hair instead of tidy yourself up is the meaning

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:47:00 PM)
So Faith, you mean you have to be very specific in your instructions.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:47:01 PM)
my son can't go and do that we have to state pick up your clothes

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:47:11 PM)
yes

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:47:33 PM)
ands doing the same thing at the same time everyday helps

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:47:47 PM)
Erica still does not put her clothes in the hamper. I have to tell her every night. I used to get mad at her but now I understand why

dolfrog (ID=72) (May 11, 2000 10:47:55 PM)
It is about how we relate to things anf instructions

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:48:15 PM)
it's like asking sarah what did you do at school today? that is too broad for her to process...her answer is alwasy...i dont know...but if you ask her detailed questions like did you do multiplication...she will say yes

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:48:47 PM)
I used to get very frustrated with him it took lots of time and patience to be able to deal

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:49:17 PM)
you have to remember not to take it out on them

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:49:19 PM)
Oh, my God. That is the same exact thing with Erica. Since pre-school, when I would ask her what did you do today? "I DON'T KNOW" Now I am asking her more specific questions. I did not know that how broad it was mattered.

dolfrog (ID=72) (May 11, 2000 10:49:24 PM)
We also only process for the immediate futre and what we need to surviveso some thing which seem impotatnt to others seem irelevant to us

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:49:53 PM)
Give an example, Dolfrog.

dolfrog (ID=72) (May 11, 2000 10:50:18 PM)
also procesing can be delayed or we miss part of the message, and so seek constant re assurance

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:50:29 PM)
Faith, now I do not. But before I knew what was wrong, I thought she was not paying attention or just being lazy.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:51:09 PM)
Brendon's old resource teacher use to say things go in the ear float around then are processed then come out

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:51:11 PM)
Yes, Dolfrog, my daughter does that all the time. Erica needs constant reassurance and constant repeating of directions.

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:51:17 PM)
example...do not tell a child to go to their room. make their bed, put away their clothes and get their shoes on......they may go to their room and start playing....they did not process the rest

dolfrog (ID=72) (May 11, 2000 10:51:19 PM)
My wife like the table to be clear and tidy. I need to leave thing where i can see them else i forget to pay the gas bill

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:52:00 PM)
boy that sounds like me

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:52:10 PM)
Yes, debbie, the same with Erica. I used to wonder why. She was doing that all the time and I never knew why.

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:52:12 PM)
Even the teachers do not understand or even know what CAPD is, that is very frustrating. So what is left for our kids., but our understanding and help. It's up to the parent. I got my sons teacher literature so she

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:52:12 PM)
I never used to be that way

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:52:27 PM)
Max, does any of this sound familiar to you?

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:52:27 PM)
can learn about it

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:52:32 PM)
miliar to you?

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:52:38 PM)

dolfrog (ID=72) (May 11, 2000 10:53:08 PM)
Iain did not learn to tell the time until he had to at school to survive moving from class to class. until then it was mum and dad with fancy terms and nice watches

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:53:22 PM)

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:53:29 PM)
Erica can tell time. I was surprised.

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:53:34 PM)
let me know..

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:53:44 PM)
Thank you.

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:53:46 PM)
She has a lot of problems with word problems in math.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:53:58 PM)
That was the worst part of this year

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:54:11 PM)
What, word problems.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:54:20 PM)
time telling and figuring out how much time has past

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:54:36 PM)
If you take your time and go through the website will find links to information on capd

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:54:41 PM)
word problems the teacher always read

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:55:05 PM)
Things only get harder., it seems.

dolfrog (ID=72) (May 11, 2000 10:55:06 PM)
I will have to go to bed, I have to go to an assesement with Micheal-Murray i 5 hours time

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:55:12 PM)
How old is your son faith?

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:55:15 PM)
sight words helped a lot with reading

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:55:33 PM)
12 years

dolfrog (ID=72) (May 11, 2000 10:55:34 PM)

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:55:41 PM)

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:55:48 PM)
Bye dolfrong.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:56:04 PM)
has it helped

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:56:24 PM)
It held my son

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:56:32 PM)
Yes, immensely. She has made progress. But she is still way below.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:57:05 PM)
they get home so late 4pm this year 5 pm next year

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:57:06 PM)
Max,,in some ways it does get more frustrating....but yet once we understandexactly what type of deficits our kids are facing and they have capd then we can systematically begin to approach each problem

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:57:12 PM)
I am looking into a summer program for math and reading so she will not be stale for September. I still do not know what to do about next year.

Hi. Ellen

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:57:50 PM)
hi ellen...how are you tonight?

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:57:59 PM)
Hi Ellen

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:58:19 PM)
Hi Ellen

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 10:58:50 PM)
i do apologize everyone that the room is so slow tonight

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:59:09 PM)
we will be working with Brendon this summer

ellen (ID=73) (May 11, 2000 10:59:11 PM)
Sorry, I've never been in a chat room and i couldn't figure ouout where to type. Hi! Hi1

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 10:59:24 PM)
This is only my third time.

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 10:59:33 PM)
I write my sons flash cards, for all his weekly vocabulary words and spelling test.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 10:59:45 PM)
never had this long off always had only two or three weeks off for summer

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:00:00 PM)
That is a great idea. Erica seems to have no problem memorizing spelling words. Go figure.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:00:28 PM)
its wonderful for learning disabled children

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 11:00:53 PM)
is anyone else having trouble with room being slow?

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:00:56 PM)
I know her tutor has tons of flash cards for sight words and we practice them.

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:01:09 PM)
What do you mean by slow. It seems fine to me.

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:01:30 PM)
So, Ellen what brings you in here tonight?

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 11:01:47 PM)
Ellen, this is my first time too.

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 11:02:01 PM)
It is very intresting.

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:02:34 PM)
I have learned so much just by being in this chat room it really helps chatting with people with similar issues.

debbie (ID=67) (May 11, 2000 11:02:42 PM)
i am going to reboot my computer i'll be r

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:02:54 PM)
Its wonderful to know that there is someone else out there with the same problems

ellen (ID=73) (May 11, 2000 11:03:18 PM)
Good, I'm glad it's somebody else's first! What brings be here is curiosity. My 8 year old daughter has CAPd, but actually it is one of her more minor problems if that is possible.

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 11:03:21 PM)
It is nice to know I was not cazy and that other people are going though the same.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:03:34 PM)
lol

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:03:47 PM)
Yes, in a strange way it is reasurring.

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 11:04:17 PM)
She has other problems Ellen?

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:04:22 PM)
Ellen, my daughter is 7 1/2 and has just been diagnosed by the school but not an audiologist yet. How long have you known about your daughter?

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 11:05:07 PM)
Ellen my son is 6 and was diagnosed one month ago.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:05:14 PM)
I have a 12 years diagnosed by the school also and have an appt. with an audiologist in June

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:05:50 PM)
I don't feel so bad. Erica was diagnosed one month ago as well. After the child study team did their "testing"

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:06:18 PM)
Faith, did you suspect problems before this?

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 11:07:00 PM)
My son, it seems has been having tests done since he was 3.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:08:33 PM)
he went through speech therapy but was told he had a specific learning disability but not never mentioned CAPD until I started looking into after running into something on a web sight. Then all of a sudden yes it is CAPD but can I get them to do the Audiologist testing no

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:08:39 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:08:53 PM)
I had to go through my health insurance

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:08:55 PM)
Welcome back debbie.

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:08:56 PM)
im back,,,sorry about that

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:09:08 PM)
hi welcome back

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:09:08 PM)
had to reboot my computer

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:09:20 PM)
That's my problem. Trying to find someone who is covered on my insurance.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:09:49 PM)
have you tried to talking to anyone with the insurance company?

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 11:09:50 PM)
I did not see it., untill my mother (who was a school teacher in her youth) told me she thought something was wrong with my son.

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:10:05 PM)
i had to pay for my testing......but i went to a university where they have a clinic and are training doctorate students.....was a bit less

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:10:20 PM)
They say what are you talking about?

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:10:37 PM)
UCF does it for$100

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:10:44 PM)
if you can get in there

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:11:03 PM)
see...that's a fair price....better than some places

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:11:16 PM)
Wow, that is cheap. The medical center near me wants $ 800.00 for the specialized testing for CAPD plus hearing screening.

ellen (ID=73) (May 11, 2000 11:11:24 PM)
She has many other problems. Severe dyslexia, OCD, generalized anxiety disorder, can't do math at all, ADHD, can't do math at all. Her formal dignosis is PDD-NOS which is on autistic spectrum. She is desperately lonely and really has no friends. She really social skills and basically normal everyday kids playing confuses her and causes great anxiety. She was tested for CAPD 6 months ago.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:11:27 PM)
yep but they have a 6-9 month waiting period

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:12:12 PM)
Ellen, I can't believe it. My son has PDD-NOS was diagnosed two months ago. Same things OCD, ADHD and Sensory Integration problems.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:12:32 PM)
took my sons test results into hisdr and asked for a referal so insurance would pay

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:13:21 PM)
Faith, my pediatraican said she does not need an audiologist. It has nothing to do with the hearing can you believe that. Thank God I have been doing a lot of reading.

ellen (ID=73) (May 11, 2000 11:13:27 PM)
Donna- I forgot, she's in OT for sensory integration.

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:13:42 PM)
one thing i found out about at the conference in s carolina this last week is that there are new codes coming out as far as diagnostic codes and testing codes that should cover capd!!!

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:13:53 PM)
now it will be up to the insurance companies to respond

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:13:57 PM)
Yes, my son as well. He receives OT, Speech Therapy and is on two medications.

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 11:14:24 PM)
I payed for my first private test., and after that enterd my son in to something called FDLRS, in the state of Florida. It is though the public school system, but there is alot of waiting.

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:14:42 PM)
max...do you have information on that???

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:15:00 PM)
My son Michael receives OT for fine motor and sensory integration. He is in kindergarten. How about your daughter Ellen.

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 11:15:04 PM)
I can get it for you.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:15:13 PM)
I have a very good dr. my two sons went in for camp physicals and came out with 2 referals each

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:15:19 PM)
if i remember correctly i was told the state of florida had convened a committee on capd

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:15:30 PM)
max...that would be appreciated

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:15:51 PM)
There does not seem to be a lot of doctors (pediatricians) who know a lot about it.

ellen (ID=73) (May 11, 2000 11:15:58 PM)
Donna- My daughter is on Prozac for OCD which makes life manageable, and Wellbutrin for ADHD. She did't do well on Ritilin or Tenex. Life is a lot better now than it was a year ago.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:16:33 PM)
when your children get closer to middle school send for the booklet on the different types of dipliomas

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:16:45 PM)
at the conference i just attended by dr ferre and dr saffer in s carolina, the majority of those who attended were slp or teachers, very few aud and i dont think any ped

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:17:04 PM)
she had no idea but wants to do anything to help

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:17:06 PM)
Ellen, my son is on Adderral for the ADHD and Luvox for the OCD. His obsessions were getting so bad. He would have the agression/anger attacks and he also self inflicts himself. Life is much more manageable as well since he is on medication.

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 11:18:08 PM)
It really does help., you just have to stay on top of it and on top of FDLRS.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:18:26 PM)
I'd love to know when any other conferences are

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:18:41 PM)
can you tell me a bit about FDLRS

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:18:42 PM)
Ellen, where are you from?

ellen (ID=73) (May 11, 2000 11:19:16 PM)
Donna- I know, the obsessions can drive you crazy. We live in Southern (sunny) California. My daughter would not let a ray of sunshine hit her skin. Getting to the car and back was a battle. Hasn't slept under sheeets on her bed for 2 years..

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 11:19:18 PM)
Oh, my God Donna, my son also hurts him self when he is angry.

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:19:29 PM)
actually faith there is a conference coming up in orlando this month...it is on may 25 to 27 i believe and is being sponsored by FLASHA...dr teri james bellis will be there

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:19:47 PM)
they have children advocates , hold workshops mainly for teachers

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:19:56 PM)
Have you had him checked.

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:19:57 PM)
ellen..how funny you mention that..neither of my kids will sleep under their sheets

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:20:25 PM)
now mine is always under the sheets

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:20:31 PM)
Ellen , that is funny because Michael wants tons of sheets and blankets on top of him even if it is 90 degrees.

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:20:45 PM)
i do alot of quilting and my kids will only sleep with the quilts i've made them

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:20:53 PM)
can you tell me anyother info on the conference?

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:21:27 PM)
i was planning on trying to attend, but the fee was a little over $200 for the three days

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:21:34 PM)
Ellen, the sheet thing is related to the sensory issues (texture) some kids can't touch certain textures.

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:22:17 PM)
I can look for the information..hold on a sec

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:22:27 PM)
there is also some kind of conference the first weekend of June

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 11:22:35 PM)
My Disabilities Child Educational Advocate will be there. It's funny you mentioned that confrence.

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:22:52 PM)
My son cannot look at swinging objects. It is the weirdest thing. The wind chimes set him off something crazy.

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:23:31 PM)
In order to get into the conference the first week of June that is being held by the Family Cafe you had to be registered by April 1

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:23:43 PM)
Govenor Bush will be speaking at that confreence

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:23:55 PM)
but nobody would answer my calls

maximillion3@prodigy.net (ID=70) (May 11, 2000 11:24:06 PM)
I never know about the texture thing. My son also hates to be covered.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:24:12 PM)
I started the beginning of march

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:24:31 PM)
i would like to go to that conference...

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:25:06 PM)
I would to, we were suppose to be on vacation

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:25:16 PM)
that week

ellen (ID=73) (May 11, 2000 11:25:48 PM)
Donna- I know. I didn't know about the sensory stuff and she was sharing a bed with her younger sister, sleeping on top of sheets and waking up screaming that her sister touched her. Sleeping terrible. As soon as I found out about sensory stuff, I went out and bought2 twin beds. But she won't sleep under sheets because bugs that she knows aren't there, will come.

faith1 (ID=66) (May 11, 2000 11:26:09 PM)
I have to go and go to bed been up since 2:30am

donna (ID=71) (May 11, 2000 11:26:20 PM)
Good night Faith.

debbie (ID=74) (May 11, 2000 11:26:23 PM)
