Hi Marge

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 8:51:04 PM)

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 8:51:47 PM)

Dorien (ID=16) (May 23, 2000 8:52:16 PM)
I have A Child with CAPD

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 8:52:30 PM)

Dorien (ID=16) (May 23, 2000 8:52:58 PM)
NO it has been just about a year.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 8:53:21 PM)
how have things gone in school this year?

Dorien (ID=16) (May 23, 2000 8:53:53 PM)
Not to bad she has been using a FM unit

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 8:54:16 PM)
great! some parents have had to battle like crazy to get an FM for their kids

Dorien (ID=16) (May 23, 2000 8:54:54 PM)
I have let the school put her under 504

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 8:55:20 PM)
perfect... just what you need, and that's especially great you didn't get static abt the FM under 504

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 8:55:39 PM)
(speaking of kids, mine are supposed to be cleaning up their rooms now, before i put them to bed)

Dorien (ID=16) (May 23, 2000 8:56:04 PM)
YA but I also have a 5 year old who may have CAPD as well

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 8:56:42 PM)
does your 5 yr old have problems that resemble the older girl's?

Dorien (ID=16) (May 23, 2000 8:57:03 PM)
yes and no he has apraxi

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 8:58:18 PM)

hi Tammy

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:00:37 PM)
Hi Dorien. It's been awhile since I was able to make it...so much going on. Hi Marge.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:01:18 PM)
how old are your kids, marge?

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:01:47 PM)
my kids are 11 9 7 and 5 yrs old

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:02:15 PM)
4 girls

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:02:35 PM)
right now, my boys are supposed to be cleaning their room too. they are 7 and 5. my daughter, 3, is "helping" them.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:02:54 PM)
tammy: you have my deepest sympathies ;-)

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:03:39 PM)
I'd like to know how come they clean behind themselves when they're at others peoples' homes but they can't clean their own room!

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:03:53 PM)
really!

Dorien (ID=16) (May 23, 2000 9:04:11 PM)
IT's A kid thing.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:04:24 PM)
there are days i could just take a front end loader up there and dump it all out!

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:05:00 PM)
i've threatened to do that...that's the only reason they're in there now...i threatened to go in there with a garbage bag!!

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:05:09 PM)
good for you tammy!

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:05:47 PM)
it's the only thing i've found to even get them to halfway clean it. hi kelli!

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:06:00 PM)
Hi!

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:06:06 PM)
oops! dorien must've fallen thru a hole in the 'net!

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:06:21 PM)
is debbie still having problems with that?

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:06:44 PM)
tammy: probably not debbie's fault... that has happened on every chat i've ever been a part of

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:06:55 PM)
tammy: used to be much worse a couple of years ago

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:07:03 PM)
tammy: on IRC chats

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:07:15 PM)
no...i know it's not her fault...just part of the game i suppose.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:07:46 PM)
how's debbie doing...it's been a while since i've talked to her.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:07:49 PM)
yeah, like windows crashing every few days, hahahaha!

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:08:13 PM)
feel free to jump right in, kelli.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:08:44 PM)
yes, we certainly don't mean to leave you out, kelli. are you part of the st johns capd list? what is your interest in capd, smile?

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:08:52 PM)
I finished IEPs for both of my children. It's been an overwhelming week!

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:09:10 PM)
(pours kelli a nice, stiff iced tea)

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:09:32 PM)
i'm kind of keyed up tonight...CJ's staffing meeting is tomorrow morning...we've been waiting for three months!

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:09:34 PM)
wow , i'll bet it has been an overwhelming week! do both children have capd?

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:09:52 PM)
we promise not to keep you up late, tammy ;-)

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:09:58 PM)
how old are they? boys or girls?

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:10:09 PM)
Two out of the three of my children have auditory processing disabilities. The oldest is almost nine and has CAPD. The youngest is almost 4 and is too young to fully test but is the same as when my oldest was that age.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:10:37 PM)
the kids manage to keep me up all by themselves!

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:10:38 PM)
hmm, that is interesting, kelli. do both children have a history of ear infections?

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:10:51 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:11:04 PM)
Yes - but the oldest was worse though

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:11:04 PM)
(i have 4 kids, all of whom have or seem to have auditory processing problems)

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:11:07 PM)
hi supermom

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:11:20 PM)
kelli, only one of mine has capd...i can't imagine having two...how do you do it? hi supermom!

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:11:26 PM)
Marge - Wow! I bet it keeps you busy!

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:11:36 PM)
hi supermom!

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:11:54 PM)
Tammy I spend a lot of time on the computer!!

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:12:05 PM)
kelli: i don't mean to be prying, but do your kids have any other medical conditions? in our case, we strongly suspect an underlying connective tissue disorder is linked to the hearing problems, but we are probably years away from proving the connection.

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:12:08 PM)
hello! I have 4 kids, and only 1 has capd. His name is Stephen and he is 9 years old

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:12:35 PM)
kelli: as they say down here, you are not just whistling Dixie, smile

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:12:35 PM)
i did that when CJ was firsts diagnosed...i haven't had too much time to do it lately...i'm hoping to get back to it.

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:13:16 PM)
Marge, No other medical condition that I know of. We feel there is something genetic though. Just a parents guess.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:13:45 PM)
supermom, i have a 7 year old who was diagnosed with capd in 1/00. i also have a "normal" 5 year old and a "normal" 3 year old. (at least they seem to be "normal" at this point.)

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:13:58 PM)
kelli: just for grins, want me to quiz you about connective tissue symptoms? they can be pretty subtle.

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:14:09 PM)
Marge, Sure!

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:14:36 PM)
you spend a lot of time on the computer too, don't you marge?

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:15:29 PM)
supermom, how long ago was Stephen diagnosed?

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:15:56 PM)
kelli: are they very doublejointed? nearsighted? unusual skin: possibly stretchy, easily bruised, or very soft? have they had any hernia surgeries? heart murmurs? tall and slender OR short & stubby?

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:16:06 PM)
tammy: yep, sure do spend a lot of time on the computer

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:16:46 PM)
My kids are 14 (girl), 11 (girl), 9 (boy) and 7 (girl). This is all new to me. He was diagonesed a few months ago. His step mother and father found out. I was having problems with him and coudn't help, so I thought that his dad might. He aslo has petite mal seziures.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:17:27 PM)
kelli: some facial signs of connective tissue disorders would include wide spaced eyes, eyes that look big, low bridge on the nose, possibly deepset eyes

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:17:42 PM)
Marge, No to all of the above. Tall and slender for my oldest. Youngest is average.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:18:15 PM)
supermom: there are several folks who have reported seizures with capd symptoms. i guess temporal lobe epilepsy could account for that.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:18:48 PM)
kelli: does she have very long, slender fingers? can she wrap her little finger and thumb around the wrist of her opposite arm?

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:18:51 PM)
Marge, My husbands brother had a lot of problems in school. He was held back in 3rd grade and never did graduate. He admits he cannot stand have anything on such as fan when trying to talk to someone.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:19:27 PM)
kelli: that's interesting. but your bro in law has not seen an audiologist, i'll bet?

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:19:39 PM)
Marge, No. (Oldest is boy, youngest is girl) Middle ("normal" ) is girl also.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:19:50 PM)
CJ used to have "staring spells" when he was between the ages of 18 months and 3 years old. he was tested for seizures but those tests turned out negative.

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:19:51 PM)
Marge, No to audiologist.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:20:05 PM)
kelli: oh well, it was worth a shot ;-)

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:20:31 PM)
kelli: it figures re: audiologist

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:20:41 PM)
(i need to check on kids.... be right back)

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:20:45 PM)
Marge, he found it difficult to work for others so now owns his own used car lot.

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:21:27 PM)
I'm having problems with the school. They say Stephen has to be 2 years behind in school for help. Stephen had his first seizures when he was 12 months old. Sept. 2, 1991 to be exact. Thats when the doctors found out in the emergency room.

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:22:16 PM)
My oldest is an honor roll student but still receives "help" with special ed services.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:22:17 PM)
my husband has a lot of the same symptoms as CJ...including having a lot of trouble in school when he was a child...but he has never been tested either. we have custody of my 16 year old niece...she is going thru the capd testing on may 31st.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:22:48 PM)
supermom, what school system are you dealing with?

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:22:55 PM)
Supermom, it bothers me when schools don't look at the whole picture.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:23:53 PM)
last year, when CJ was in kindergarten, his teacher bullied us into having him tested for ADD...even though i knew that that wasn't his problem...those tests came back negative as well.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:24:19 PM)
where are you, kelli?

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:24:27 PM)
we are in the public school stystem. I actually thought that Pequea Valley was one of the best schools around. He is only 6 months behind the rest of his classmates. we thought that Stephen was add.

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:24:51 PM)
Right here.

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:25:14 PM)
I was reading throught the previous entries.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:25:26 PM)
CJ had a lot of the ADD symptoms but he could sit still and watch a video for 1 1/2 hours. from what i understand, an ADD child can't do that.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:25:54 PM)
kelli, ha ha ha. are you in florida?

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:26:10 PM)
Both of my CAPD kids had ADD symptoms as well. My oldest seem's to have outgrown a lot of it. My youngest wear's me out though.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:26:11 PM)
supermom, where is Pequea Valley?

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:26:16 PM)
Tammy, no I'm in Michigan.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:26:34 PM)
really, where in michigan...i have family in muskegon.

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:26:43 PM)
Byron Center

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:27:06 PM)
Byron Center is about an hour from Muskegon. I have family there also.

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:27:17 PM)
I have a meeting with the school on June 5th to discuss next year. I heard that a ADD child can sit through a movie and play video games for a long period of time. It helps them. Pequea Valley is in Lancaster County in PA.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:27:21 PM)
how are the schools there? are they helping your kids?

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:27:39 PM)

Hi Tammy

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:28:01 PM)
Tammy, we use a charter school. They have a very low adult to child ratio. Hi socks!

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:28:06 PM)
Hi Supermom

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:28:19 PM)

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:28:31 PM)
i'm back

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:28:44 PM)
is the room clean yet?!

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:28:47 PM)
(is wondering about the nickname "socks")

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:28:56 PM)
I have a newly diagnosed child with CAPD

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:28:58 PM)
tammy: no.. but it will have to do..gettingtoo late

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:29:10 PM)
socks: oh! tell us: what kinds of problems is your child having?

woody (ID=21) (May 23, 2000 9:29:15 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:29:18 PM)
hi woody!

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:29:20 PM)
Tammy, the SLP the charter provides evidently had a CAPD professor in graduate school. She seems very educated about CAPD and is going to provide coping and organizational skills next year in the classroom.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:29:21 PM)
socks, how old is your child? hi woody!

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:29:37 PM)
Hi Woody!

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:29:40 PM)
kelli: wow, you sure are fortunate!

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:30:07 PM)
He has a sensorineural hearing loss, has probs in fading memory and coding

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:30:08 PM)
CJ has been in speech since preschool and none of his speech teachers said one word to us about a suspected processing problem.

woody (ID=21) (May 23, 2000 9:30:16 PM)
hi everybody sorry I'm late

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:30:20 PM)
socks: how severe is the sensorineural loss

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:30:24 PM)
I even called the local public schools to compare. Their response was a resource room.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:30:36 PM)
woody: no problem... we've been chatting away happily, smile

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:31:02 PM)
i'm pretty sure that's what they're going to offer CJ tomorrow...i just wish i knew what was best for him.

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:31:11 PM)
Socks, doesn't speech help with that also?

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:31:24 PM)
socks, why not?

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:31:32 PM)
that is waht the audiologist reccomended in the report

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:32:03 PM)
say he doesn't have the criteria?

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:32:04 PM)
kelli: they do different sorts of activities to help w/language than with speech...i've observed one of my dau's speech sessions. saw how they changed what they were doing to help another little girl w/language problems

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:32:35 PM)
i know CJ's fm unit has worked miracles...between that and the private tutoring we got for him, he is now reading simple sentences where he wasn't able to even sound out words not that long ago.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:32:41 PM)
thing that has me puzzled is he already get's speech for articulation

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:32:56 PM)
socks: maybe he doesn't have bad enuf scores on the language tests to meet their qualification criteria??

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:33:04 PM)
right!

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:33:16 PM)
socks: my daughter gets articulation therapy... diff from language stuff

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:33:22 PM)
right

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:33:27 PM)
does any of your children have behavioral problems with capd? Stephen gets very mad and upset easily.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:33:44 PM)
socks: for example, my daughter gets words w/the "r" sound to pronounce. the other little girl got quizzed on opposites.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:33:44 PM)
My son has adhd

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:33:58 PM)
and sensory intergration problems

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:34:01 PM)
supermom, When they were younger they did. My youngest still does.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:34:35 PM)
socks: how severe is your child's sensorineural loss?

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:34:41 PM)
or could be they don't have the "resources". that's what CJ's speech teacher told me. she is only at his school twice a week and has to work with 119 children. she says the best they can offer him is articulation therapy even though she knows he needs intensive language therapy...CJ doesn't comprehend the meaning of alot of words.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:34:42 PM)
why couldn't they do both for him?

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:35:13 PM)
I am thinking of homeschooling

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:35:16 PM)
tammy: have you tried to work with him on vocabulary at home?

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:35:22 PM)
Stephen stomps his feet, sometimes bangs his head, pouts and puts his head down

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:35:30 PM)
Tammy, is word retrieval a problem as well. My oldest and youngest still deal with this.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:35:32 PM)
he is 9 yo! and we just found all this

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:35:51 PM)
told us his only problem was ADHD since kindergarten

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:36:02 PM)
from what i've seen homeschooling requires a tremendous amount of sacrifice of the mom's time & energy... perhaps some extra work w/him at home would help

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:36:12 PM)
thats what the doctor and school said about mine

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:36:31 PM)
i am not against homeschooling, don't get me wrong, but I know it's not the right choice for me.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:36:31 PM)
how old was yours when you found out?

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:36:48 PM)
Socks, we were told my oldest possibly possibly had autism in Kgn. Thankfully, the tests came back otherwise.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:36:58 PM)
the sensory problems worry me a lot

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:37:06 PM)
socks... we just found out a few months ago

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:37:18 PM)
his handwriting is totally illegible

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:37:24 PM)
socks: did they send him to an audiologist when he was in kindergarten? i have heard that sometimes kids get classified ADHD when the problem is really hearing loss.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:37:37 PM)
supermom, CJ still will through a fit...especially if he's tired or hungry. marge, we do work quite a bit with him at home. kelli, CJ starts his sentences five to six times before he manages to get it all out. he has a lot of trouble organizing his thoughts and then remembering it long enough to get it out of his mouth.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:37:40 PM)
yes and it was WNL

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:37:42 PM)
I don't know alot about Stephen, because his dad and stepmom keep alot from me.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:37:50 PM)
but it was just a screening

Laluki (ID=22) (May 23, 2000 9:37:58 PM)

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:38:02 PM)
hi laluki

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:38:10 PM)
hi laluki

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:38:15 PM)
socks: what is his current hearing loss level?

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:38:19 PM)
socks, writing and pencil grip is a problem here as well. Hi laluki!

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:38:53 PM)
He reads above grade level,is on grade level in Math, but he has illegible handwriting

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:38:57 PM)
Tammy, struggling to get it all out is a problem with ours as well. It is better in comfortable situations.

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:38:58 PM)
as far as I know Stephen has problems with comprehenson and writing

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:39:12 PM)
CJ has problems with writing and pencil grip too...also cutting. hi laluki!

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:39:50 PM)
hearing loss at 250Hz to 500Hz

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:39:52 PM)
supermom, I am homeschooling a comprehension based language arts program this summer for our oldest. We are going to use Five-in-a-Row for our youngest.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:40:02 PM)
at lower frequencies

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:40:11 PM)
socks: ok, that is the frequency range... what is the level in dB please?

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:40:35 PM)
I didn't get the audiogram

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:40:56 PM)
socks: bummer! do you remember if they classified it as "mild" or "moderate" or "severe"?

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:40:58 PM)
I just have the Speech Recognition and speech in noise

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:41:24 PM)
does all kids with capd lose their hearing? Stephen's hearing is fine.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:41:33 PM)
socks: did they give you a score for "PTA" which stands for pure tone average

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:42:12 PM)
When ipsilateral background noise introduced at 35dBSL he scored 72% in right and 76% in left

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:42:18 PM)
CJ's hearing is 100%. That's why is took four different visits to the audiologists and my insisting that something was wrong before the capd was diagnosed.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:42:35 PM)
supermom: some kids with hearing loss ALSO have CAPD. most kids on this list who have been diagnosed with CAPD have normal peripheral hearing. some folks who are diagnosed with CAPD later go on to develop "regular" hearing loss.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:43:06 PM)
supermom: we used to have a member of this list who was dx'd with capd (dont' know on what basis) when he was in grade school who became deaf over a year's time when he was in college.

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:43:24 PM)
Marge, that is a little scary.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:43:39 PM)
supermom: his doctors do not know why this happened. it is NOT common to hear such stories on the list.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:44:02 PM)
the audiologist suggested that he have his hearing checked in 6 months to make sure it wasn't progressive

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:44:17 PM)
kelli: well, it just goes to show you that you can't treat the initial capd dx as something that might not change. good idea to have follow-up audiological evaluations done every few years.

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:44:32 PM)
marge... when his dad found out that he was having seizures they had him tested

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:44:38 PM)
socks: that sounds like a smart idea.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:44:48 PM)
will simply having the FM device help him?

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:44:57 PM)
supermom, does stephen live with you or his father?

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:44:59 PM)
Marge, we are actually planning on doing that this summer. I'm trying to figure out insurance coverage for this. Insurance plans changed since the last time.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:45:08 PM)
socks: depends on how much of a loss he has. if it is about 15 dB or so, the FM alone might be enough

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:45:26 PM)
socks: but if he has say a 35 dB loss, it is doubtful the FM will have enuf power for that

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:45:26 PM)
what I have learned is low frenquency is vowels and high is consenant sounds

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:45:35 PM)
socks: basically, yeah

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:45:50 PM)
right now he lives with this dad. It's going to be a fight to get him back. he is suppossed to come back and live with me this summer as soon as schools out.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:45:54 PM)
so he doesn't hear vowel sounds!

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:45:59 PM)
socks: he'll have trouble hearing the diff between words like "pan" and "pond"

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:46:16 PM)
socks: he'll hear them, but probably can't distinguish the differences between them

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:46:32 PM)
I kept telling them that he sat in class not knowing what was going on

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:46:33 PM)
i'm trying to learn everything I can so I can help him.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:46:34 PM)
socks: i have a great deal of trouble distinguishing the differences between consonant sounds

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:46:56 PM)
supermom, that's the key!

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:46:59 PM)
socks: i hear "something" and make a guess what consonant it was. i don't always guess right.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:47:04 PM)
he needs a lot of visual cues right?

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:47:19 PM)
another question

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:47:22 PM)
socks: well, the visual cues help, but they are NOT a substitute for appropriate amplification

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:47:41 PM)
that's what i've been doing for CJ. when he was diagnosed, even our pediatrician had never heard of capd and the teacher didn't act like she was interested.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:47:44 PM)
the audilogic dept will give him one month to try the FM device out

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:47:47 PM)
socks: they make all kinds of hearing aids for kids. including some that combine hearing aids with FM

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:47:52 PM)
is this enough time

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:48:10 PM)
should I look into this?

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:48:11 PM)
socks: that is great, hmmm, yeah, you should notice he can hear better pretty much right away

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:48:21 PM)
my school did'nt know about capd either.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:48:39 PM)
they use the easy listener

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:49:12 PM)
would the audiologist been the one to reccomend a hearing aid?

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:49:16 PM)
socks: ask your audiologist about it, i'd say. Two companies make combo hearing aids/FM units: Phonic Ear just introduced the "sprite" which can handle anything from no hearing loss to moderate loss. AVR Sonovation also makes a similar unit.

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:49:16 PM)
my school didn't either but the SLP did. The school has not questioned any suggestions. They are even adding carpet to the classrooms next year.

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:49:27 PM)
be right back

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:49:28 PM)
socks: yes, audiologist would recommend hearing aid, and fit it.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:49:48 PM)
does insurance cover this?

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:50:04 PM)
socks: depends on your insurance. some united healthcare plans cover full cost

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:50:15 PM)
socks: many insurance policies do not cover at all.

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:50:15 PM)
i would love it if they put carpet in CJ's classroom but i can't even get his teacher to move his desk away from the door!

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:50:31 PM)
I have cigna, they will not cover anything the school should cover

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:50:33 PM)
socks: medicaid pays for hearing aids for kids but not for adults

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:50:41 PM)
Tammy, your kidding. I guess I've been kind of spoiled.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:51:09 PM)
I am so glad I found you guys!

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:51:22 PM)
tammy, do you have charter schools in your area?

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:51:24 PM)
socks: that gets to be a bit ticklish whether they will pay for prescription medical equipment

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:51:47 PM)
We've had to have all of the testing done ourselves as it was going to take the school a full school year to do it...i wasn't willing to wait that long to get him the help he needed.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:51:49 PM)
socks: but most places that sell hearin gaids these days understand that you can't plunk down a big chunk of money up front

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:51:53 PM)
if it was phrased in that manner I bet I had a better chance

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:51:56 PM)
socks: they have payment plans available

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:52:11 PM)
not that i know of...

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:52:12 PM)
Oh Awsome!

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:52:22 PM)
and FM devices?

(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:52:34 PM)
i'm back

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:52:35 PM)
socks: your best bet is to get the aids and FM thru the audiology dept of a nonprofit hospital

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:52:42 PM)
hi kmanbam

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:52:45 PM)
socks: BY LAW a nonprofit can't charge you interest on a loan

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:52:47 PM)
really?

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:52:48 PM)
Tammy, our son wouldn't be where he is today with out this school.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:52:57 PM)
like scottish rite?

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:52:59 PM)
they did provide him with an fm system though. hi kmanbam!

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:53:01 PM)
socks: there is one hospital in our area that lets you buy hearing aids 12 mos same as cash

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:53:08 PM)
Hi kmanbam!

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:53:13 PM)
I work in a nonprofit hospital

kmanbam (ID=23) (May 23, 2000 9:53:18 PM)
hi

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:53:21 PM)
socks: that would be a good place to check. then you would own the hearing aids & fm system yourself

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:53:24 PM)
but we only do orthopedic

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:53:33 PM)
socks: great!! arrange to have lunch with your hosp audiologist!

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:53:41 PM)
what's the difference between a charter school and the public school system?

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:53:46 PM)
shriners

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:53:48 PM)
socks: ohhhh, no aud there, huh?

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:54:00 PM)
but they are affiliated with scottish rite

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:54:09 PM)
I don't think our school will do alot for Stephen. They just learned about this.

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:54:10 PM)
Tammy, charter schools are public schools. They are usually started by colleges. No tuition.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:54:18 PM)
Man I am glad I found you guys!

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:54:37 PM)
socks: it is super-super important to get the hearing loss stuff resolved to the degree it can be with suitable amplification.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:54:38 PM)
GOOD idea

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:54:51 PM)
I don't know why I didn't think about that

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:55:10 PM)
I think of them for speech and language

Tammy (ID=17) (May 23, 2000 9:55:13 PM)
i'll be right back...have to check on the kids.

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:55:16 PM)
tammy, charter schools are usually small. That is the biggest benefit for us. The low child to adult ratio guarantees that a teacher or parapro will spend extra time to explain new material one-one-one if necessary.

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:55:41 PM)
I'm going to check on kids too - be right back!

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:55:43 PM)
socks: it will make the capd stuff a lot easier to deal with.

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:55:44 PM)
what if you don't have a charter school in your area?

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:55:56 PM)
I need the audiogram

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:56:03 PM)
socks: and it may even take care of the decoding issues

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:56:14 PM)
now I know why the school requested the audiogram results

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:56:34 PM)
socks: see, here's the problem: almost all the CAPD tests assume the child has NORMAL hearing. only a few select capd tests can be run on kids with hearing losses.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:56:36 PM)
but they told me it was to see if a FM would be warranted

supermom (ID=19) (May 23, 2000 9:57:12 PM)
what few select capd tests are done?

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:57:14 PM)
I was also told that the SCAN might get him quakified for Language therapy?

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:57:35 PM)
socks: so if I just willy-nilly start testing kids for capd WITHOUT accounting for their peripheral hearing status, a lot of them will flunk some of the capd tests, not because they have CAPD, but because many of the capd tests depend on good high frequency hearing.

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:57:37 PM)
supermom, I'm not sure. We considered homeschooling before finding the charter.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:57:58 PM)
socks, supermom: i'm not sure what capd tests can be run validly on a child with a low tone loss.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:58:08 PM)
his high frequency seems to be WNL

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:58:20 PM)
socks: i don't think you can run SCAN on him without accounting for the hearing loss situation

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:58:47 PM)
socks: especially stuff like filtered words. people with sensorineural loss are naturally gonna do poorly on that test.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:58:57 PM)
okay,at least I know where to start

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:59:28 PM)
socks: like i say, i'm not sure what effect the low tone loss would be on the scan. you need to consult with a really top-notch aud who can choose suitable tests

Kelli (ID=18) (May 23, 2000 9:59:29 PM)
supermom, We also considered finding a small private school. But it would mean me going back to work full time. It didn't make sense when I had a newborn at the time and a 1 1/2 yr old when our oldest was first diagnosed.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 9:59:34 PM)
could sensory intergration problems be some how related?

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 9:59:53 PM)
supermom: one test that for sure is ok to run on folks with mild-moderate high freq loss is dichotic digits

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 10:00:52 PM)
supermom: i'd have to dig thru my files to find some of the others. an aud that is truly knowledgeable about capd & hearing loss will know what tests to pick. in fact, i would quiz them about their recommendations for valid capd tests since you KNO W he has that low tone loss

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 10:01:30 PM)
socks: i'm not sure i know enuf about sensory integration to be able to answer your question. i have not had sensory integration tests done on myself or my kids, so i don't know what the pitfalls might be.

Marge, I'm impressed. I struggle to remember even the tests the SLP uses. I wouldn't know where to begin on the audio.

malmor (ID=27) (May 23, 2000 10:08:57 PM)
I will give it a try to see if it helps.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 10:09:04 PM)
socks: good luck to you... since you can do the easy listener trial for free, go ahead & do that. if you're just thrilled w/the results, ask your aud about the phonic ear sprite. then your son would have hearing aid at home full time as well as FM when that makes sense (like at church or in noisy places)

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 10:09:09 PM)
where did you find it?

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 10:09:26 PM)
ok, i must go too. goodnite all!

malmor (ID=27) (May 23, 2000 10:09:35 PM)
What is a phonic ear sprite?

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 10:09:38 PM)
I can't get the Fm until next school year

Maxi (ID=26) (May 23, 2000 10:09:48 PM)
Well Dorene, it is my second time, but you will catch up and learn alot.

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 10:09:52 PM)
I think I going to call scottish rite tommorow!

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 10:09:56 PM)
malmor: it is a combination hearing aid and FM unit. fits behind the ear. very small.

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 10:10:15 PM)
malmor: the hearing aid part can be set to a level that is appropriate for ppl with normal hearing

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 10:10:25 PM)
I can't thank you enough for your info

Marge (ID=15) (May 23, 2000 10:10:28 PM)
malmor: it just came out... was just announced this month

malmor (ID=27) (May 23, 2000 10:10:28 PM)
FM speaker was too cumbersome for Dianna, so I am looking for something small that might do the trick. Where did you find it?

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 10:10:30 PM)
I was lost

socks (ID=20) (May 23, 2000 10:10:37 PM)
