fine
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 8:14:00 PM)
She is the worst one out of the four kids. She can drive you crazy.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 8:14:15 PM)
How old is she?
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 8:14:24 PM)
She is seven.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 8:14:56 PM)
my seven year old little girl got in a fight at school and got a referral today..she's a handful
dolfrog (ID=64) (May 25, 2000 8:16:01 PM)
i have just been reading the captions at the top of this site as they flash by
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 8:16:17 PM)
My son Stephen is the one who has capd. He is nine. Sorry to hear about that. I have a 14 year old girl and a 11 year old girl to. The 14 year old thinks that she is in her 20's.
dolfrog (ID=64) (May 25, 2000 8:17:21 PM)
how does he cope with it
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 8:17:21 PM)
Graeme I put two new banners up today for Dr Moncreiff and Marna Scarry-Larkins..Im looking forward to having them join us the next two weeks
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 8:17:26 PM)
dolfrog... how many kids do you have and how old are they?
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 8:17:51 PM)
My daughter who is about to turn 9 is the one who has capd
dolfrog (ID=64) (May 25, 2000 8:18:21 PM)
I have an 11, 7 and 18 month all boys 2 with CAPD, oHHHHHHhand i have CAPD
dolfrog (ID=64) (May 25, 2000 8:19:24 PM)
I may be able to pop in depends if I have time off work
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 8:20:23 PM)
He has his ups and downs. He lives at his dads house right now. They are the ones who found out that he had CAPD. He also has petite mal seizures. They don't tell me alot. I plan on getting him back in a couple of weeks. I'm trying to learn everything I can so I can help him.
dolfrog (ID=64) (May 25, 2000 8:21:06 PM)
how did they find out
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 8:22:37 PM)
dolfrog... they had him tested. His stepmother's brother had seizures when he was young. We thought that he had ADD. She was the one who knew something was wrong.
dolfrog (ID=64) (May 25, 2000 8:23:44 PM)
because some of these LDs are inherited
dolfrog (ID=64) (May 25, 2000 8:25:24 PM)
We have had ADD and ADhD eliminated for our middle son Michael-Murray
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 8:25:47 PM)
I know alot of people suspect a genetic link with capd and think it may be in some forms hereditary,,but there's no proof yet to support that is there?
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 8:25:49 PM)
My brother had a learning disability when he was growing up. My birth mother was borderline of being mentally retarded. I think her IQ was around 70.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 8:27:02 PM)
one of my family members did comment a while back about having trouble reading..really surprised me
dolfrog (ID=64) (May 25, 2000 8:27:37 PM)
CAPD and dyslexia and others , you tend to inherit the same LD, like my late father we believe had cAPD, I have it ,and 2 of my sons have it
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 8:28:31 PM)
no one else that i know of in myfamily has capd
dolfrog (ID=64) (May 25, 2000 8:29:59 PM)
CAPD is a relatively new idea altrhough the people who had it were not aware of the condition but still had to oversome it , but the nature of society means that it is more of a problem in the faster pace of life now
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 8:30:06 PM)
Do any of you have problems with your school? I have a meeting with the school on June 5th for next year. Do you have any advice? His stepmother was saying that the school wants the doctor to give him a title so he can get special classes. If this happens, then the insurance company want pay for anything anymore. I don't believe this.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 8:31:35 PM)
I sitll have trouble with my school off and on..although the audiologist told me today that Sarah would get her FM next year also
dolfrog (ID=64) (May 25, 2000 8:32:17 PM)
in the Uk we are just dicovering the problem and the government runs the show indirectly by subsidy and grants or should i saylack of them
dolfrog (ID=64) (May 25, 2000 8:33:26 PM)
We have to get the teachers to help Iain and they use my web site for reference, which links all the best site in the USA and else where
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 8:33:36 PM)
I"m just starting the search for grants here...gonna be a long summer
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 8:34:09 PM)
Stephen doen't need a FM yet. His hearing his fine. He has problems remembering things. He has problems in reading, writing, language, and listening.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 8:34:59 PM)
Sarah has perfect hearing too.....but the FM has helped her with background discrimination
dolfrog (ID=64) (May 25, 2000 8:35:20 PM)
Iain is like that, he has good and bad days, when things get too much he just cuts himself of, (i know where he inherited that from)
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 8:36:21 PM)
Sarah is great about turning people off too
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 8:36:49 PM)
I've heard that charter schools are good for kids who have problems. Exactly what is a charter school? I never heard of it. Stephen can do the same thing too.
dolfrog (ID=64) (May 25, 2000 8:36:56 PM)
i thing it is selective hearing
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 8:38:21 PM)
Stephen has a hard time making friends. Everybody makes fun of him at school. He crys alot and throws fits. He even called the principal stupid. Sometimes I think he is that too.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 8:38:53 PM)
In our area charter schools are public schools that have an emphasis on special emphasis.....such as technology...the arts..computers..foreign language...etc
dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 8:39:54 PM)

welcome back
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 8:40:56 PM)
Sarah is over sensitive at times too....She's social but dont make close friends
dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 8:40:58 PM)
sorry about that it is my server bug it cuts me off now and then
dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 8:41:23 PM)
thanks debbie
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 8:42:17 PM)
Stephen gets upset very easily. He plays baseball and gets mad when he can't hit the ball or when he gets out. I find that he gets upset at home too. His sisters pick on him alot. Do you have any kids in your area that you live that has problems like Sarah and Lain?
dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 8:42:38 PM)
Iain is not so sensitive but Michael_Murray (m&M) is very sensitve especially if he feels he is being left out
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 8:43:06 PM)
I know one other parent here in Jacksonville, but we dont live close and the kids haven't met yet
dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 8:44:15 PM)
Iain and M&M and I are the only ones in the Uk that admit tob being CAPD, there are a few otheres but they are miles away
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 8:44:43 PM)
there ya go supermom..you found the icons *L*
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 8:45:16 PM)
I live in Pennsylvania. I don't know of any kids like Stephen. My dad is from England. My parents live in Bradenton, FL.
dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 8:45:39 PM)
Thjs is why I tried to create a forum for children with CAPD so that they could leave messages for each other,i think chats may be too much for the younger ones to process and type
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 8:45:42 PM)
actually it seems as if alot of parents from this support group are from PA
dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 8:46:26 PM)
is it catching
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 8:46:46 PM)

debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:16:28 PM)
Tammy did they recommend a 504 for you? Ready to go down town together?
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:16:33 PM)
hey, at least that's something. but I thought she already had an FM...
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:16:59 PM)
she does have her FM..I called about whether he would be picking it up or whether I woudl have to take it and turn it in
dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 9:17:04 PM)
Donna how would you describe the "wrong"
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:17:18 PM)
they told me that each individual school made up their own 504s and I would have to talk to the principal and teacher at a separate meeting for that!
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 9:17:22 PM)
I have family who live in London Ontario and Toronto and all over Canada. My parents are going to Toronto for a month. My dad was just diagonised with Parkinsons Diease.
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:17:57 PM)
just a feeling...I knew he was a bright child and he just seemed to be falling further and further behind...and that's the diagnosis a gifted child with CAPD
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:17:59 PM)
Tammy who all was at your meeting today ?
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:18:02 PM)
i'm sorry about that supermom. i hope he does okay.
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:18:18 PM)
((Supermom)) I grew up in Toronto and I'm about an hour and half from London
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:18:26 PM)
sorry to hear about your Dad
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:18:29 PM)
Supemom I hope your dad does well..*HUGS*
dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 9:19:06 PM)
I think he is more likely to be CAPD as this causes children to fall behind what would be their natusral progression
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:19:06 PM)
DJ excells at Math and Art but falls apart with the language skills of reading and writing
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 9:19:08 PM)
Me too. My mom is really upset. I my dad is 75. My mom is 65.
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:19:34 PM)
the principal, his teacher, his guidance counselor, the school psychologist, his speech teacher, the occupational therapist, a mission rep from special education, and the ESE teacher at the school.
dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 9:19:50 PM)
Iain could not cope with maths but is ok with writing
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:19:53 PM)
I feel like I have alot to learn
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 9:19:57 PM)
So does my son, except he does great in art. He likes doing things with his hands.
dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 9:20:32 PM)
has anyone esle in your family have similar problems
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:20:34 PM)
well, maths, science, art, computers he's doing great above average but don't ask him to read or write.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:20:36 PM)
Sarah seems to excel at math also
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 9:20:40 PM)
Donna... I feel the same way. Its going to be a learning process for all of us.
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:20:45 PM)
mr. frame, the guidance counselor, kept quoting "guidelines" and how CJ fell outside them all. Clif was so mad he wanted to strangle him...that's not like Clif at all.
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:21:27 PM)
I have a cousin who is dyslexic sp? And my soon to be ex husband said he had similar troubles learning but no one caught it
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 9:21:29 PM)
The school told us that Stephen has to be 2 grades level behind for any special help.
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:21:31 PM)
they told me that CJ is going to be retained this year.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:21:41 PM)
I think I"m goign to call and see if I can get the acutal raw scores from the tests and see if they keep copies of the actual tests....
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:21:46 PM)
can you fight that Tammy?
dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 9:21:59 PM)
CAPDs work thing out in their own way it is the only way to survive and foloowing someone elses giudlines is useless
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:22:03 PM)
seems to be a problem with school boards all around
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:22:43 PM)
i'm calling the school board tomorrow and see...it's my understanding (if I'm right), that they can't retain him unless we agree...Clif and I are checking into homeschooling for him.
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:22:44 PM)
so far DJ's school has been very supportive, it seems like there's more problems at the school board level. I also have joined an advocacy group from London, Ontario
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 9:22:52 PM)
CAPD is a learning disability and therefore we should all be eliligble for special help from the school.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:22:53 PM)
Tammy just to let you know.....I am going ahead with the plans to open a national non profit devoted to capd......might get the schools attention since im in their backyard
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:23:19 PM)
sounds interesting Debbie, congratulations
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 9:23:26 PM)
Go for it.
dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 9:23:53 PM)
howis it going
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:24:12 PM)
I'm just very frustrated and angry that it's taken this long to discover what the problem was
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:24:19 PM)
I hope so...I think CJ's problem is they don't recognize CAPD...they said he might qualify if he shows "attention difficulties".
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:24:36 PM)
Donna it took me 4 years to have my child diagnosed.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:24:52 PM)
are you off work tomorrow by chance tammy?
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 9:25:15 PM)
Does anyone collect social security for their kids with CAPD. A friend of mine said that we probally could.
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:25:18 PM)
well they held Daniel back in Grade 1, we thought maybe it was because he was a December baby, in the long run it really didn't help
dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 9:25:22 PM)
It took us 5 years to getr Iain diagnosed and me 45
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:25:34 PM)
ouch
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:25:36 PM)
Tammy...Bill Pharro, the district audiologist, use to work with Dr Willeford who invented one of the tests on CAPD!! He is familiar with it!
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:25:36 PM)
they are going to do some more evaluations...they wanted to wait until next year to do any further testing...i told them we had waited long enough for their testing and they would test him before the school year was out...they tested him as soon as we left..no results yet though.
supermom (ID=65) (May 25, 2000 9:26:03 PM)
Stephen was in prefirst before he went to 1st grade. He didn't like going to school and he still doesn't.

debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:27:05 PM)

Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:30:29 PM)
they also told us that CJ they were recommending that CJ have a neurological examination done...no one could tell me what they wanted that for. they told me he tested as a "slow learner".

dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 9:34:45 PM)

DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:35:48 PM)
they thought that a lot of the problems we were encountering were because his Dad and separated last year. It sure has been a difficult time for all of us
dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 9:35:49 PM)
Grand parents understand that in their day CAPDs became the local eccentrics
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:37:01 PM)
If you find anyone in your area who tests for capd please let me know....
dolfrog (ID=66) (May 25, 2000 9:37:07 PM)
The were the colourful characters who would be helpful, but were not good at communication
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:37:25 PM)
btw tammy....patty is going into private practice next week and leaving nemours
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:37:38 PM)

Hi Debbie and Tammy
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:41:31 PM)
how are you tonight
dolfrog (ID=70) (May 25, 2000 9:42:01 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:42:24 PM)
Hi samonnesmom
samonnesmom (ID=69) (May 25, 2000 9:42:49 PM)
OK, the meeting with Samonne's principal went well. They agreed with to let her use the FM system and to classroom accomadations for her. This is saying alot for a private school.
dolfrog (ID=70) (May 25, 2000 9:43:00 PM)
hi all sorry about that my PC has a bug and it cutds me of sometimes
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:43:25 PM)
hi samonnesmom. how have you been? it's been a while since i talked to you.
samonnesmom (ID=69) (May 25, 2000 9:43:42 PM)
Tammy,
samonnesmom (ID=69) (May 25, 2000 9:44:10 PM)
i am fine. just busy at work and with the end of school.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:44:15 PM)
that's great to hear sammones mom
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:45:14 PM)
debbie, are you still going to the advocacy training next month?
samonnesmom (ID=69) (May 25, 2000 9:45:39 PM)
Once they assign teachers the principal wants to sit down again with her teacher. Do you have any other suggestions for classrooms accomadations?
samonnesmom (ID=69) (May 25, 2000 9:46:05 PM)
Baby just woke up. I have to go.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:46:49 PM)
no im not able to go....had to be registered by april 1st..i thought that was just hotel reservations
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:47:40 PM)
that's too bad Debbie, sounds like we need advocates
dolfrog (ID=70) (May 25, 2000 9:48:31 PM)
we need a whole new system intheUK
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:49:09 PM)
Donna I want to learn more about advocacy but there is so many other projects to work on for now...the time will come
dolfrog (ID=70) (May 25, 2000 9:50:05 PM)
have you got enough sponser for you project
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:50:26 PM)
not yet graeme..i cant seek grants until i get paperwork done
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:50:39 PM)
i know we need advocates here...there are just not enough people who seem to really want to help the children.
dolfrog (ID=70) (May 25, 2000 9:51:21 PM)
I have done things the wrong way round as usual with money posibly coming in before things are set up
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:51:25 PM)
I just need to figure out what to do next? I would like to have all this in place for the beginning of next year. They started DJ on an Individual Education Plan in March since then I've been trying to get all the testing done - I went to the London Learning Disabilities Association for help. They will act as an advocate in the education system for me
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:52:08 PM)
seems like a lot of hurry up and wait in the system
DonnaE (ID=68) (May 25, 2000 9:52:18 PM)
brb need to tuck DJ in bed
dolfrog (ID=70) (May 25, 2000 9:52:53 PM)
the only people who help the children are the parents unfortunatlely,
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:53:02 PM)
the hurry up and wait approach is what the system does best...they are hoping you'll give up and go away.
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:53:41 PM)
Debbie, have you ever considered home schooling Sarah?
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:53:47 PM)
Tammy we are working on the advocate parts in this area...we will get there!! Graeme that is why Im trying to be so careful of what order I do things in
dolfrog (ID=70) (May 25, 2000 9:54:10 PM)
Sounds like theya re not giving themselve sor you the time to find out what the real problem is
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:54:22 PM)
Tammy I dont think homeschooling would work for me...I dont know wny
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:54:46 PM)
I dotn see me homeschooling..which is funny because I always wanted to be a teacher *L*
dolfrog (ID=70) (May 25, 2000 9:55:20 PM)
I wanted to be a teacher but it is difficult with cAPD
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:57:00 PM)
right now, we are seriously considering it for all of our kids...CJ would get alot more one on one and he could take a break as he needed too. we were also told that since he has an iep in place stating he needs speech and the fm that he would still be provided with these services.
dolfrog (ID=70) (May 25, 2000 9:57:07 PM)
got to go falling asleep bye all
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:57:16 PM)
bye bye graeme
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:57:19 PM)
take care!
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:57:41 PM)
how's sarah doing debbie?
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:58:28 PM)
she's doing pretty good.....we went to sea world last friday..and she freaked out on one of the rides..she didnt understand it was a simulator and thought i really took her to the artic
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 9:59:20 PM)
I should have results of her recent eval this next week
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 9:59:24 PM)
yeah, i read your email about that...poor kid...i can't imagine what they must have to deal with on a daily basis.
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 10:00:14 PM)
cj is getting better about telling me he didn't hear me, or something distracts him, or he doesn't understand what i'm telling him...i view that as progress.
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 10:00:45 PM)
why did you have her re-evaluated? should CJ be re-evaluated as well?
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:00:51 PM)
i read the transcripts from the last chat where you said cj was doing alot better with sounding out words...
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:01:12 PM)
it had been two years since the last eval...i wanted to knwo if we'd made progress
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 10:01:29 PM)
yeah, two months ago he couldn't sound out simple words. now he is reading simple sentences.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:01:51 PM)
That is fantastic Tammy!
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 10:02:44 PM)
i think it's a miracle. now if i can just get him to understand what he is reading and figure out how to help him retain it we'll be much better off.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:03:28 PM)
you have to ask him questions about what he read...keep going over it in small parts
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 10:04:39 PM)
i do but he seems to lose it as fast as he reads it..we read a page..go over it..read another page..he remembers the second page but not the first...it just gets so frustrating...for both of us...
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:05:03 PM)
do you know the game "going on a bear hunt"
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 10:05:16 PM)
no. what is it?
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:05:21 PM)
i know it does tammy..i've crid so many nights...
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:05:29 PM)
how about i just give you a call quick?
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 10:05:45 PM)
okay...still have the number (haha)!
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:05:50 PM)

Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:10:41 PM)
we went to sesame place today
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:10:59 PM)
Rose, how is it going? Were you able to digest some of the information from the chat last week.
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:11:25 PM)
what's that Rose? I feel rather stupid about all of this
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:11:51 PM)
My son is 8 and also recently diagnosed, but i joined before i ever had an actual diagnosis
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:12:13 PM)
I only heard the term at the beginning of this year
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:12:14 PM)
good evening everyone
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:12:30 PM)

Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:12:58 PM)
it was but also tiring
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:13:05 PM)
hi speech
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:13:08 PM)

speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:13:39 PM)
i am interested in how all of your children were dxed i work with capd kids everyday it is one of my specialties
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:13:43 PM)
Donna it all feels overwhelming in the beginning. The list is a wealth of infomation and can help you sort out whatever you are feeling and can address your concerns.
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:14:04 PM)
Speech are you really a speech and language pathologist?
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:14:10 PM)
yes i am
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:15:12 PM)
well my son was an engima to his teachers, excelling in Math, Science, Art, French but falling apart with language skills - writing, spelling and reading
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:15:13 PM)
i am dealing with people that don't understand that capd is areal problem
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:15:38 PM)
Well I nad never heard of it either, but i had joined a list for special needs children and when someone mentioned CAPD I asked what it was. I was surprised that it fit my son almost perfectly.
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:16:05 PM)
he found reading and writing to be extremely frustrating. He was also having peer problems. It was actually his teacher and the special ed teacher that suggested it as a possibility
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:16:28 PM)
The hard part was insurance wouldn't cover and trying to find a place to get him tested
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:16:42 PM)
It did seem to fit DJ. I took him to a pedeatrician sp? to rule out ADD and ADHD
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:16:52 PM)
My daughter went in for a rule out ADD hearing test. The audiologist noticed she processed better in her right ear than in her left. He did a SCAN a week later. We followed up with a SLP who did the CELF-3 and two other tests that confirmed CAPD. The testing was done because her teacher noticed she had trouble focusing
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:16:57 PM)
We already knew he had reading and language problems
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:17:29 PM)
Speech were are you located?
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:17:39 PM)
it is amazing thdy fit so nicely into the little title i find that environmental stimualtion is a big problem as well even the smallest noises phonemic awarenenss any of your children have chronic ear infections
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:17:42 PM)
Well my son has both ADHD and CAPD
doe (ID=75) (May 25, 2000 10:18:12 PM)
My son had repeated ear infections with tubes 7 times
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:18:17 PM)
new york
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:18:34 PM)
my son did and was on antibiotic therapy for a few moths, it seemed to help but repeated infections had already effected him
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:18:53 PM)
i find that chronic ear infections increase the risk on capd
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:19:11 PM)
My son was born with a "floppy windpipe", he was prone to ear infections and upper respiratory problems
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:19:14 PM)
I still don't understand my sons CAPD report as i only just received it this week
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:19:48 PM)
has he had an audiology exam
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:19:52 PM)
No. I agree about people not thinking CAPD is real. The SLP at the public school knows about it but thinks its just a title for a numerous problems related to language.
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:19:59 PM)
He seemed to be delayed in talking as well, he went to a speech pathologist before he went to school
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:20:27 PM)
Yes it was an audiologist that diagnosed him
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:20:34 PM)
cap kids can catch up and do as well as anyone
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:20:39 PM)
my son didn't talk at all until almost three and we couldn't understand him until 4 or 5
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:21:22 PM)
my son did have an audiology exam
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:21:32 PM)
usually the teacher or speech therapist will suspect capd the audiologist will actually perform the testing to determine cap
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:21:39 PM)
well they seem to think that we're also dealing with a gifted child who has a learning disability
doe (ID=75) (May 25, 2000 10:21:52 PM)
I keep reading about remediation and that modifications aren't enough. What does this mean and who should help my son with this?
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:22:05 PM)
einstein was learning disabled
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:22:08 PM)
She did not have chronic ear infections but suffers from allergies. Her kindergarten teacher noticed that she was having trouble concetrating but her hear tests and other tests were normal at that time. Eight months later the discrepancy showed up
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:22:29 PM)
I hear a lot of gifted people had/have the problem
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:22:32 PM)
my son has above average intelligence with ADHD and CAPD as well as other learning disabilities , it is frustrating at times
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:22:51 PM)
It must be very frustrating Rose. It must also get tiring
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:22:53 PM)
if we only knew in the beginning any meds rose
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:23:30 PM)
Accomadations can help. It helped my daughter. You have to keep a dialogue with the teacher to make sure the accomadations are still working
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:23:38 PM)
capd is quite misdiagnosed as adhd of add
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:23:47 PM)
quite often
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:24:13 PM)
Iyes adderall 5mg 2x daily but dosage isn't perfect yet
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:24:27 PM)
Donna it does get frustrating. Samonne brings home good grades but there was something missing.
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:24:29 PM)
well they thought that he was having problems because of the problems at home. He has dealt very well with his father leaving last year
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:24:48 PM)
once the meds are straight you should see the difference
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:25:34 PM)
hasn't dealt I should type :0)
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:26:28 PM)
school doesn't want to give language therapy, even with CAPD diagnosis and recommendations of therapy by audiologist and speech and language therapist(private)
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:26:37 PM)
i am having problems with my daughter right now difficulty distinguishing allophones worries me i know the struggle these kids experience she numerous ear infections and tubes
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:26:57 PM)
what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:27:03 PM)
dONNA, We had to look at her emotional state too. We had just moved from Japan and my husband could only get a job in Virginia (We are in Texas) and she started a new school.
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:27:26 PM)

doe (ID=75) (May 25, 2000 10:28:33 PM)
Have you had any experience with AIT or Tomatis?
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:28:35 PM)
PA in phila. they consider any processing problem to be an LD and not fall into speech and language therefore not eligible for services
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:28:47 PM)
I guess I should be very thankful that this is all covered under the universal Canadian medical system
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:29:14 PM)
you are fortunate rose canada has a very good medical system
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:29:15 PM)
Rose, is the school willing to test based on the reports to confirm them?
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:29:32 PM)
he does not fall under the cse
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:29:41 PM)
yes I was quoted a price of 2500-3000 american dollars just to test my son at first place I contacted
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:29:57 PM)
holy
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:30:00 PM)

DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:30:01 PM)

samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:30:28 PM)
Welcome back Debbie
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:30:35 PM)

Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:30:42 PM)
The school did do their own speech and language eval but based on their standards he is ineligible
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:30:46 PM)
and $40 at the Learning Disability Association for the initial consult and membership
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:31:13 PM)
does there slp know what they are looking for
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:31:21 PM)
I think it's a shame that in this day and age, it all comes down to $$$ and who has the most
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:31:26 PM)
Im so sorry..we were the only ones in here so i just called tammy..we live in the same town
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:31:31 PM)
so instead of helping them they want me to place him in special ed
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:32:21 PM)
don't be sorry Debbie, i think it's great that you have someone whom you can pick up the phone and call
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:32:38 PM)
i know it is awful one of my kids was turned down for a therapy that would really help him because he is on medicaid i told the doc he could probably afford to eat it ya know pro bono he didn't say much after that
Tammy (ID=67) (May 25, 2000 10:32:44 PM)
sorry for hogging debbie...i didn't realize anyone else had entered the chat.
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:32:48 PM)
well I think the problem is they don't look for problems related to CAPD as they don't really address it , to them it is a processing problem almost as if they don't feel therapy can really help him
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:33:16 PM)
Rose, What tests did they do? When I took Samonne they said she qualified for Speech Services. If I remember correctly from last WED your son's results looked similiar to Samonne's.
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:33:43 PM)
well they've placed DJ on a Indvidual Education Plan and IEP and they are doing a formal identification of him in the Communications-Learning disability area, this way he'll have legal rights under Canadian and Ontario law
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:33:48 PM)
hi slp.... what part of ny are you in?
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:34:09 PM)

speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:34:27 PM)
central ny binghamton area
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:34:35 PM)
it's very hard to convey to the schools that capd does affect language...tammy and i have both been turned down for language also
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:34:36 PM)
Ontario Canada here
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:34:49 PM)

hi doe! good to see you Rose!
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:35:56 PM)
well i'm hoping with problems i have encountered with the school this year , i will force them to provide it for fear of action concerning things they have done this year
doe (ID=75) (May 25, 2000 10:36:06 PM)
Hi !
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:36:18 PM)
Rose, are they willing to treat the components of the report such as language delay, auditory memory etc.
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:36:26 PM)
Hi deb You were busy when i arrived
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:36:37 PM)
I've been very fortunate with the school, his teacher, the special ed resource teacher, the principal have very supportive
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:36:39 PM)
I have a feeling opening a national non profit for apd in in our districts back yard may help open their eyes
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:36:45 PM)
yes i have 2 right now i diagnosed and took them to the audiologists masters work was all capd it fascinates me

debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:37:46 PM)
wow!! i bet that was an awesome experience
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:38:06 PM)
he developed the staggered spondaic word test for capd
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:38:29 PM)
The list help me with research and I have notebook that I take to all meetings with information on CAPD, remediation techniques, classroom accomadation information, FM system information, her medical reports, and samples of school work as well as report cards
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:38:30 PM)
well it looks like they are making accommodations for DJ - mainstream class, preferential seating, perhaps an fm system - use of a computer
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:38:32 PM)
that is the test my son did poorly on
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:38:34 PM)
dr katz is a very down to earth person and has a great sense of humor
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:38:59 PM)
yes i know..i've done alot of reserach on capd..im planning on opening a national non profit for apd in the very short future...filing papers in a few weeks to start the process
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:39:06 PM)
they didn't even address the recommendation for am FM system
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:39:08 PM)
i have no use for mainstreaming my personal opinion
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:39:23 PM)
why is that Speech?
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:39:27 PM)
i am currently having one of my guys fitted for fm
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:39:31 PM)

speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:39:34 PM)
it does not work
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:39:47 PM)
my daughter used an fm and it has been a tremendous help
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:39:58 PM)
it may work for special areas gym home ec art
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:40:03 PM)
well in a rural school there is no such thing as a special ed class
doe (ID=75) (May 25, 2000 10:40:29 PM)
I keep seeing remediation what does that mean with CAPD
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:40:45 PM)
i went to rural school all special ed were in one room
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:40:47 PM)
Rose, you are not alone. Be a squeaky wheel.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:40:54 PM)
in the state im in i was told that if i had my child placed in exceptional student education, instead of helping her meet the standards they would lower the standards to meet her...

Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:41:37 PM)
this is what they are trying to do with my son but i won't let them
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:42:12 PM)
interesting debbie
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:42:26 PM)
I was told it has nothing to do with intelligence, just the way the brain translates the messages, is that right or wrong?
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:42:27 PM)
I want services to help him not make everything easy for him so he doesn't have to learn
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:42:53 PM)
doe remeadiation is effectively helping a child overcome the underlying cause for the capd...... ex: my daughter had trouble with distinguishing sound in the presence of background noise....we had to teach her to distinguish the sounds...
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:42:54 PM)
I know DJ needs to be pushed just a little or he will let everyone else do it for him.
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:43:14 PM)
an expert manipulator
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:43:29 PM)
that is not unusual for cap kids
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:43:32 PM)
Donna that is correct...i believe it was Dr Katz who described CAPD as "what you do with what you hear"
doe (ID=75) (May 25, 2000 10:43:54 PM)
debbie who did or how did you do this?
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:44:03 PM)
they had a program where they were slowing the speech sounds by milliseconds
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:44:25 PM)
Samonne tries that too.
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:44:30 PM)
thanks Debbie I like that explanation
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:44:35 PM)
Doe..my daughter went through the FFW program last fall and uses an FM trainer..
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:44:39 PM)
It's one I can try and use with the grandparents
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:44:57 PM)
what is fastforward?
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:45:00 PM)
I am sending her to a place called learning foundations that uses a program called PACE this summer.
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:45:28 PM)
fast forward and earbotics were recommended for my son
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:45:38 PM)
before that she use to be in outdoors sports...she had to really concentrate to understand the coach if she wanted to know what was going on...(did these type of things before we knew what to do for sure)
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:45:50 PM)
Debbie, did you do fast forwardd at home or at the school?
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:46:04 PM)
debbie did the school provide your daughter with her FM trainer?
doe (ID=75) (May 25, 2000 10:46:16 PM)
Debbie I am looking into that program on my own since I saw it on the internet. Is that a personal FM?
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:46:23 PM)
Donna..FFW is a language based program made by Scientific Learning www.scientificlearning.com
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:46:46 PM)
My insurance company is paying 80% for Samonne's FM trainer.
doe (ID=75) (May 25, 2000 10:46:46 PM)
Did the program help?
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:46:59 PM)
the FM trainer that Sarah used was a personal FM called the Easy Listener...it was provided by the school after some "hesitation"
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:47:00 PM)
that was at a conference i went to 2 or 3 years ago but it was not marketed yet the fast forword is the retrain your brain program it is basically something you could do yourself repetition i do it my self in my room with a microphone and then the child repeats i try a lot of different things
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:47:55 PM)
I think the combination of the FM and FFW helped Sarah..we are seeing major progress withher right now....she went through FFW last fall
doe (ID=75) (May 25, 2000 10:47:56 PM)
The school told me a personal FM would be a stigma for him to wear
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:47:57 PM)
my insurance won't cover anything and the school sure isn't rolunteering, i'll be fighting for this
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:48:25 PM)
i use the tried and true but i also trty to invent my own necessity is the mother of invention all of the therepy tools that have come to be have been made by trail and error
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:48:26 PM)
that's what I wondered Doe, he's already having peer problems
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:48:39 PM)
Debbie, do you know where I can get information on that FM system. The audiologist recommended Williams Sound PFM 300 but we can not find a network provider.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:49:01 PM)
doe...i was worried about that also..but Sarah is in 3rd grade and had no trouble...the first day sarah had her FM one of the girls in ther class told me "sarah is really quick to answer with that hearing thing"... now another girl in 3rd grade has one also
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:49:26 PM)
sammonesmom im not sure about that..but can try and find some inforamtion for you..may take a bit
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:49:31 PM)
no stigma attached with fm system
doe (ID=75) (May 25, 2000 10:49:39 PM)
I am also looking into AIT-auditory integretion therapy- has anyone looked into it?
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:49:43 PM)
Well my son is going to have to deal with the trainer like he dealt with getting glasses
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:50:03 PM)
like special ed doesn't stigmatize a child
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:50:18 PM)
you have a point
doe (ID=75) (May 25, 2000 10:50:19 PM)
They use the sound field system instead
Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:50:24 PM)
no but it sounds interesting
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:50:36 PM)
it does sound interesting
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:50:49 PM)
but the child i am having fitted is emotionally disturbed not ld
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:50:49 PM)
Tammy who just left has an fm for her son who is in first grade.......since he's started wearing his fm..he's been collecting girls phone numbers *LOL* go figure!
doe (ID=75) (May 25, 2000 10:51:09 PM)
I have an appointment for a consultation
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:51:10 PM)
That is my fear but I plan to use it this summer to get her used to it and I will have to talk to her about dealing with teasing if there is any. She will be in the second grade.
samonnesmom (ID=73) (May 25, 2000 10:51:47 PM)
Baby woke up again. I have to say goodnight. Look forward to the transcript.
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:51:50 PM)
Sarah has worn her FM for several month and never had trouble with being teased...i think a large part of that is due to her teacher
doe (ID=75) (May 25, 2000 10:51:54 PM)
about the FM system look under phonic ear
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:51:57 PM)

Rose (ID=71) (May 25, 2000 10:52:38 PM)
I really want the school to provide some type of instructiion during the summer, my son has difficulty retaining newly learned information unless it is used continually
DonnaE (ID=72) (May 25, 2000 10:52:41 PM)
I'll have to check the transcript out. This is really a Godsend
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:52:54 PM)

debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:53:06 PM)

debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 10:56:30 PM)
10 to 15 years ago very few people had really heard of add or adhd and knew what it was....dont you think capd is on that edge now...that if there was a greater public awareness we would see more kids diagnosed?
speech language pathologist (ID=74) (May 25, 2000 10:56:35 PM)
i am always looking for more support and more info

debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 11:20:50 PM)
Rose..after the problems you've had I'd think the school would be begging to help you!!!
debbie (ID=63) (May 25, 2000 11:21:02 PM)
