hi dorien
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:13:06 PM)
Hi
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:13:22 PM)
where are you from?
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:13:42 PM)
Monticello New York.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:13:55 PM)
How about you
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:14:07 PM)
I'm from Gap, Pennsylvania.
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:14:58 PM)
How old is your child with CAPD? Mine is 9 years old.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:15:20 PM)
She is 9
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:15:50 PM)
When did you learn that she had CAPD?
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:16:18 PM)
Just about a year ago. How about you
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:16:37 PM)
About a few months ago.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:17:13 PM)
It took about 4 years to get a name for this.
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:17:42 PM)
I know. The schools don't know alot about it.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:18:16 PM)
Our school did not know any thing about CAPD at all
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:19:05 PM)
Neither did ours. Personally, I think alot of the schools don't. They need to be educated about it, just like us.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:20:00 PM)
Our school pushed S/E for Tricia
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:20:58 PM)
Something told me not to go along with this as they did not know how to work with her.
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:22:26 PM)
I have a meeting with the shcool on the 5th for Stephen for next year. I just got his report from the language/speech doctor. The school said that they can't go by that. They have to have their own speech person test him before he can be in any special classes.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:23:13 PM)
Ask about 504
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:23:58 PM)
I got info about that. I still will probally have to go through their processing system first.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:24:35 PM)
Being I had the testing done on my own I did not have to
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:25:17 PM)
We had the testing done on our own too, but the school is being stubborn and stupid about it.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:26:01 PM)
The school also found that with the help an FM unit Tricia did do somewhat better
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:27:10 PM)
Does she have any hearing loss. Stephen doesn't yet. I don't think the school has a FM unit.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:28:25 PM)
She does not have a hearing loss but the school has to provide her with the FM unit
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:28:56 PM)
Do the other kids in her class make fun of her?
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:29:26 PM)
No she does not take that from anyone
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:30:21 PM)
I wish Stephen was like that. He crys or throws a fit when someone makes fun of him. He usually gets in trouble and has to go out into the hall.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:31:17 PM)
I have been able to work with our school but I do not Play well with the CSE
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:31:40 PM)
What is the CSE?
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:32:17 PM)
The Committee on Special Education
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:33:30 PM)
Does your school have a special education classroom or do they just have a resource room with Title 1 for reading and math? Our school has a resource room.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:33:51 PM)
Both
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:34:16 PM)
Is she in both or just the SE?
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:35:30 PM)
Tricia is not in SE I would not let the school do this to her as they push kids with out giving them an education
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:36:24 PM)
I want Tricia to get all she can
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:36:49 PM)
My brother was in a SE growing up. Come to think of it, they pushed him on. I used to do his homework for him. I would rather Stephen get all he can too.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:37:49 PM)
It is not a pice of cake but we need to look out for our kids as the school will not
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:38:16 PM)
I agree 100% on that.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:39:05 PM)
I found that Tricia was passed to 2 when she could not do the first grade work
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:40:18 PM)
Have you had Stephen tested by an audiologist
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:42:46 PM)
Stephen was in pre-1st because he wasn't ready to go into 1st grade. He never liked going to school. He still doesn't. I can understand now. His stepmother and father had him tested. I don't think it was an audiologist, but a psyco. They did all the necessary tests that was able to determine what was wrong. They ruled out ADD. Stephen also has petite mal seizures. He had a EEG done. Thats how all the testing started.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:45:05 PM)
I have been there but with the testing being done by an audiologist and the rec to use an FM unit the school should not be able to fight getting it to much.
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:46:23 PM)
I'll do whatever it takes to get all the help Stephen needs. Even if it means to get a lawyer.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:47:06 PM)
Try this and if this does not work you can request medation
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:47:48 PM)

Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:47:54 PM)
I am going for medation for my son as he still needs to have S/T
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:48:06 PM)
I'll see how the meeting goes. I'm hoping everything will go my way.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:48:07 PM)
hello
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:48:21 PM)
Hi
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:48:31 PM)
Hi socks. Where are you from.?

socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:49:50 PM)

socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:50:16 PM)
always something
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:50:43 PM)
Stephen is going to start seeing a language therpist. The insurance company is going to pay for it. Our school only has 1 speech/language therpist for 5 school iin our school district.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:51:11 PM)
this is the problem,my insurance won't cover it
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:51:38 PM)
You may be able to get help under 504
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:51:50 PM)
and my therapist told me flat out of course verbally her professor in college didn't believe in Capd
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:52:10 PM)
and so far no children in the district getting therapy for Capd
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:52:23 PM)
My ex-husbands insurance does. I don't know if mine does.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:53:09 PM)
he gets speech for articulation will be getting OT for sensory intergration probs and has an Iep for ADHD and written Language disability
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:53:18 PM)
what kind of therapy is there for CAPD
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:54:21 PM)
Has anyone contacted the local news station? Our local station does health issues. I think if the public is aware of CAPD it will help. They need to interview the schools to see how they deal with children with special needs.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:54:28 PM)
the specific therapy is suppose to address coding skills ,desensitivity to background noise memory skills etc.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:55:18 PM)
I have never found info on this
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:55:27 PM)
even social skills
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:56:10 PM)
I need to find this info
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:56:15 PM)
when he recieved the CAP testing by the audiology dept of childrens hospital they reccomended it in the report
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:56:24 PM)
talked about what to address
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:56:45 PM)
do you have access to a fax?
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 9:56:45 PM)
Stephen's language theraphy is designed to facilitate improvement in the areas of understanding linguistic concepts; auditory reasoning and processing; auditory memory via stimulation, and compensatory strategies.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:56:59 PM)
exactly!
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:57:29 PM)
All I was told was to have her moved to the a diff seat
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:57:35 PM)
this in turn impacts social skills, and progress in accedemics
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:57:50 PM)
accademics
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:58:30 PM)
I am now begining to see that the ADHD diagnosis is probably not accurate
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 9:59:33 PM)
moving their seat is just one little accomodation
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 9:59:35 PM)
I have been told that 1in 20 kids have been called ADHD that have CAPD
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:00:01 PM)
I believe that ,probably higher numbers then that
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:00:11 PM)
She also recommends that the classroom teacher take these dificits into consideration via providing visual as attention as needed; providing optimal seating; removing distractions as possible; gaining attention before speaking; checking auditory processing; repeating/rephrasing; keeping instructions short. She also says that he should have a Psycho-educational evaluation done.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:00:30 PM)
this speech keeps telling me all kids with ADHD have probs in CAP
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:01:04 PM)
I still think that the public needs to be aware. ADHD kids have the same signs as kids with CAPD.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:01:12 PM)
I work with some kids with ADHD and they do not have CAPD
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:01:26 PM)
the problem is the schools don't test for this
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:01:32 PM)
I agree with you
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:01:37 PM)
they only do a hearing screening
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:01:58 PM)
didn't even pick up a hearing loss that he apperantly has also!
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:02:06 PM)
The school can do Conner Sc
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:02:15 PM)
yes, but their hearing can be fine. They need tested more.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:02:28 PM)
I have been told the SCAN is the most appropriate
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:03:22 PM)
The Conner will only give so much
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:03:32 PM)
does your kids also have probs in other areas?
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:04:03 PM)
Stephen has petite mal seizures.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:04:03 PM)
My son has Apraxia
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:04:19 PM)
What about yours?
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:04:31 PM)
interesting Dorien,so he doesn't have probs reading then?
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:04:37 PM)
mine doesn't either
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:04:53 PM)
Michael is only 5
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:05:19 PM)
Joey reads above grade level doesn't have probs visually decoding but his writing is totally ilegible
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:05:22 PM)
His sister does not seem to have a reading
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:05:58 PM)
Apraxia kids wind up being awsome readers
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:06:13 PM)
Stephen can read, but he has a problem remembering. He has a hard time writing.
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:06:25 PM)
I have been told that he will do fine in school
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:06:29 PM)
but I guess this is from the sensory intergration problems
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:06:51 PM)
he has had articulation probs since he started talking
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:07:18 PM)
he will have some troubles reading nonverbal cues though
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:07:21 PM)
As for Tricia she also has a problem with renenbering
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:07:36 PM)
like body language stuff
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:08:00 PM)
are both your kids diagnosed CAPD?
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:08:20 PM)
No my son has not been yet
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:09:00 PM)
But we know what to look for this time
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:09:14 PM)
I hear you!
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:09:37 PM)
I am wondering whether to pull him out and homeschool him
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:09:44 PM)
It took to long to find out for Tricia
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:09:59 PM)
Stephen tested on the Auditory Perceptual Skills (Auditory Number Memory Forward he is at the age of a 5.3 year old. He is 9 Years old. The Auditory Number Memory Reversed he is at the age of a 7.7 year old.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:10:07 PM)
he also has an older brother with written language disorder math disorder and ADHD
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:10:42 PM)
I will not take my childern out of school
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:10:54 PM)
It takes alot of time of patience to homeschool. I don't think I could do that.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:11:30 PM)
It has been such a nightmare trying to get services and help for them and the audiologist told me the more one on one he gets the better
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:11:32 PM)
Why make your child feel even more different
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:11:43 PM)
you know this won't happen in school!
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:12:06 PM)
this is a definite consideration too
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:12:20 PM)
but you don't think they feel different now?
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:13:07 PM)
now they have to contend with being very different and everyone knowing it
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:13:24 PM)
30 kids to be exact
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:13:31 PM)
I found its hard for these kids we need to show them that they can make in the real world
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:13:59 PM)
the real world is not the public school system
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:14:28 PM)
its not in the real world they can not give up
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:14:40 PM)
Stephen needs alot of one on one too. He doesn't really know that he is different. The other kids know that he is. I think the teacher needs to explain to the kids that he really isn't all that different. Everyone has a problem with something.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:14:52 PM)
the reality is they are very smart creative children who will some day do great things
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:15:23 PM)
as long as someone doesn't ruin it for them and take what self esteem they have totally away
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:15:53 PM)
That is our job as parents
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:16:16 PM)
My ex-husband wanted to hold my son back in 3rd grade because of his social skills. I think that would be a mistake. Self esteem is very important. We need to help our kids with that.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:16:18 PM)
this is the biggest problem . If the teacher doesn't know about the disability it isn't easy for them to explain it
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:16:28 PM)
We need to be strong for them
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:17:06 PM)
We can teach the teachers
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:17:07 PM)
I think retention can be very detremental
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:17:22 PM)
We need to explain it to the teacher. I plan to go into school before it starts again next year and sit down with the teacher and explain it to her/him.

Hi Supermom...I'm in Canada
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:18:55 PM)
I have found this to be vey helpful as long as the teacher takes it in the manner it is given
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:19:17 PM)
and doesn't get all defensive
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:19:36 PM)
I agree I have been able to pick Tricia's teachers
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:19:49 PM)
I guess I have become cynical in my old age
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:20:05 PM)
I guess its our job to make sure that they understand. I can care less if they get defensive. They are there to teach.

socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:20:24 PM)
have great teachers and very bad ones
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:20:39 PM)
I agree with you supermom.....we are the ONLY ones who can advocate for our kids
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:21:30 PM)
I have to say as a parent I am the only advocate my child needs
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:21:36 PM)
You definetly have to advocate! don't get me wrong it just gets hard when you have to continue doing it over and over and over
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:21:55 PM)
and you do every year
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:22:06 PM)
I hear you socks! We have an IPRC tomorrow that I am almost dreading
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:22:09 PM)
I do it for my kids as well as for a job
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:22:28 PM)
My daughter is 2 years older than my son. She is okay. I get the chance to see what some of the teachers are like for that grade. I hope my son can get some of her teachers. They are great.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:22:31 PM)
Always fun aren't they?
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:23:00 PM)
this does help my kids are a grade apart
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:23:09 PM)
it's our first.... My son is 11 and was just doagnosed
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:23:20 PM)
oopps, diagnosed
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:23:29 PM)
get everything in writing
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:23:34 PM)
spelling doesn't count here.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:23:37 PM)
ask to tape meeting
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:23:59 PM)
and keep the focus on your kid
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:24:00 PM)
I have already hired a special ed advocate.... I know this is going to be a fight for services
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:24:11 PM)
GOOD JOB!!!!
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:24:42 PM)
I have heard Canada is not easy
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:24:54 PM)
We might all have to do that. We are going to be fighting alot.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:25:14 PM)
Where do you live supermom?
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:25:22 PM)
I was told he couldn't see a speech-language path because he's 11! ANd an Fm system was only for "deaf" kids. They hadn't heard of FFw or Earobics either.....
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:25:41 PM)
oh lord!
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:25:59 PM)
I live in Gap, Pennsylvania. It's about an hour west of Philadelphia.
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:26:08 PM)
yep.....I feel like I have to deucate the learning resouce teacher
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:26:12 PM)
My dtr uses an FM unit and she can hear
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:26:24 PM)
the funny part is my son has a hearing loss and I was told based on the significance of the loss the FM device wouldn't help him!
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:27:13 PM)
Thiis was suggested by a doctor and I had the school follow up
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:27:27 PM)
my son has some hearing loss as well as ADHD supposedly.... but I am pushing for a 6 month trial to see if it helps at all
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:28:10 PM)
Get it in the plan
supermom (ID=115) (May 30, 2000 10:28:27 PM)
I hate to do this. I've got to get ready for bed. I've got to watch a four year old tomorrow and I've been suffering from a sinus headache all day. I talk to you ladies on Thursday night. Bye!
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:28:46 PM)
Good bye Super MOM!
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:28:57 PM)

CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:28:59 PM)
I have already decided that I am not signing anything tomorrow at all....by law here I can request another meeting within 15 days
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:29:05 PM)
Night Supermom
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:29:11 PM)
Good Girl!
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:29:18 PM)
that is right
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:29:43 PM)
just remeber that what you don't sign they don't implement
Dorien (ID=116) (May 30, 2000 10:29:47 PM)
I have to go as my pager just went off
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:30:00 PM)
don't let them wait 15 days
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:30:24 PM)
bye Dorien,thanks for your insights
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:30:39 PM)
too late
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:30:43 PM)
true..my concern is that I want dates for beginning of all programs as well..... so that it actually happens
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:31:26 PM)
dates and who will be responsible for making sure it is carried out
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:31:39 PM)
good point! :o)
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:31:49 PM)
get the accountability up front
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:32:34 PM)
I am reaaly going to push for my son to a board trial for FFW and see what happens
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:33:24 PM)
their is a great website called Judy Bonell not sure what the address is but she has a wonderful parental attachment letter and how to get services agreed upon in writing
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:33:49 PM)
do you have this reccomended in a report?
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:33:59 PM)
this poor kid can barely write a sentence that makes any sense at all..... and math is impossible..... I will do a search for that site tonight
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:34:32 PM)
Both of my kids have BAD writing and one has Math disability
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:34:37 PM)
Yep.... the aud. recommended Earobics, LiPS or FFw as well as the speech path.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:35:26 PM)
Good! the first thing to do is make them show you were they are going first
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:35:55 PM)
like ask them where do they see his problems? how do they purpose to help him
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:36:10 PM)
then you know where they are first
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:36:43 PM)
I have our school scared to death.....I already told them that I will appeal any denial of service to a tribunal! LOL! Themn I get a call yeasterday that a speech-path will be present at the IPRC
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:36:48 PM)
then you can counter them like well in this report the audiologist reccomended this
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:37:39 PM)
especially if what they have been doing hasn't be working
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:37:56 PM)
amazing:-)
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:38:32 PM)
I have mine too scared of ligiation
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:38:37 PM)
They have done absolutely nothing for this poor kid.....They slightly modified his program but only because he is so far behind.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:38:51 PM)
now it is like pulling teeth to get anything in writing
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:39:16 PM)
When we finally got the CAPD dianosis I asked what services he would get and I was told nothing!
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:39:31 PM)
you keep pushing this Many suits have been won on lack of progress
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:39:55 PM)
or lack of educational benefit
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:40:00 PM)
really! Interesting to know
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:40:54 PM)
Yeah, most due process Judges want to see progress
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:41:21 PM)
Do you have progress reports that show this?
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:43:36 PM)
we only got the diagnosis a couple of weeks ago but.... it's documented from JK/SK that all the signs have been present as well as educational assessments every other year that have shown his problems and their so-called solutions
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:44:11 PM)
anything in writing that you can present to them to say this is where he was last year, this is where he was this year,so me where your services have given my son any educational benefit
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:44:38 PM)
show me where he has made progress
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:45:35 PM)
if you get them in the position of well we can't then they might go for a trial of Fast forword
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:45:35 PM)
we can definitely do that......I have copies of everything, mostly due to frustration of trying to find a diagnosis
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:46:08 PM)
Graphs are always nice
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:46:44 PM)
otherwise bring a copy for everyone at the meeting
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:46:59 PM)
ok.... will do that
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:47:09 PM)
so everyone can look at what you are refering to together!
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:47:19 PM)
makes sence
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:47:29 PM)
then no one can say well I don't know what your talking about
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:48:03 PM)
And keep hammering away at show me where he has made progress
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:48:46 PM)
wear them down eh!LOL!
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:49:38 PM)
Another really good tactic is when they say something outrageous,or plainly untrue ask the chair to please write that down on the meeting notes
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:50:06 PM)
Just say, would you please write that down?
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:50:16 PM)
I would like that documented
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:50:38 PM)
OK..... document everything. Makes sense
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:51:13 PM)
there will be someone taking notes of things that won't be in his plan and then you will sign that this was discussed
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:51:32 PM)
at the end of the meeting
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:51:53 PM)
they will only say something stupid once believe me
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:52:27 PM)
LOL! My experience has been several times already!
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:52:47 PM)
and if not you have documentation for the next step if there has to be one
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:53:19 PM)
true.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:53:44 PM)
if they know you will have their comments in writing they will be a lot more careful about railroading you
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:54:19 PM)
can you tape this meeting?
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:54:37 PM)
notes to have a way of coming back to bite them in the butt I guess. I sure can tape it
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:54:53 PM)
do that also
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:54:59 PM)
ok
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:55:38 PM)
really not admissible in court but tapes have a way of keeping everyone honest and gives you something to review afterward
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:56:10 PM)
exactly....my experience has been in the past that so much is said that you tend to forget things
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:56:27 PM)
And they forget a lot don't they!
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:56:56 PM)
I have use transcripts of tapes for a State Complaint
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:57:14 PM)
YEP! They sure do.... I am still getting from a meeting in Oct....Oh, we did say we would make that referal to the OT didn't we.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:57:19 PM)
helped a lot
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:57:33 PM)
right
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:57:37 PM)
I imagine it would
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:57:44 PM)
burns you up don't it
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:58:08 PM)
that right there is a form of retailiation
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:58:19 PM)
keep the delay going
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:58:42 PM)
I am furious with our school board! We have a reputation as a catholic school board to have exceptioanl programs for LD's...... But I want to know where they are? My son isn't getting them
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:58:47 PM)
Mom's going to be a pain he can wait for OT then
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:59:32 PM)
It takes you to guide them in the right direction
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 10:59:34 PM)
Ironically though, both my hubby and I are on school council! They have to deal with us everyday. LOL!
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:59:45 PM)
or the kid get's lost in the shuffle
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 10:59:59 PM)
LOL
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:00:43 PM)
that is good then you can keep them working at getting services for the others too!
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:01:48 PM)
I think they finally got the idea that we aren't going top sit back and be quiet about this. As a council member I have alot of clout at the board office and have an open line to the Ministry of Ed. I have made it very clear that this is unacceptable for my child or any child but that I will gladly use my own child's case as a point
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:01:55 PM)
You are vey smart for getting an advocate too
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:02:19 PM)
good girl!
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:02:47 PM)
sometimes it simply a lack of education and accountablity
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:03:16 PM)
and parents not knowing what their rights are
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:03:24 PM)
It came from frustration. He has a reputation for getting things done. He is documenting another case on the web for all to see and boards are scared to death of him! LOL!
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:03:46 PM)
Oh yeah?
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:03:57 PM)
Awsome
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:04:05 PM)
love to see that one
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:04:06 PM)
I definitely understand that! It seems there is so much red tape to deal with to get services.....this meeting and that commitee
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:05:09 PM)
it like that no matter where you live too
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:05:29 PM)
we have IDEA in this country and it doesn't help either
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:05:53 PM)
It's called SpedShedKid Sped being Special Ed... Shed standing for the portable classrooms that so many special ed classes are in here in Ontario.
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:06:15 PM)
there is a major lack of accountablity and trying to cut cost at the risk of our kids education
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:06:38 PM)
Love it !
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:06:49 PM)
we have a lot of portables too
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:06:52 PM)
How true! We are in the process of education reform here in Ontario so we here the money thing all the time
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:08:06 PM)
Every grade 3 and 6 kid in this province just finished a week of provincial testing. All in the name of reform and provincial standards
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:08:08 PM)
cost a lot less money then to have go to court though
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:08:50 PM)
or try everything else then to just give them the services to begin with
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:08:51 PM)
That's exactly what my advocate said! They will give in pretty quickly and supply the services because they will loose anyway
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:09:16 PM)
my kids should of had OT in kindergarten!
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:10:00 PM)
now they are ten and eleven
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:10:09 PM)
Corey just turned 11 and can't tie his shoes yet! And they finally decided that he *May* have a problem
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:10:23 PM)
and the district has to provide them with laptop computers in class
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:10:37 PM)
talk about cost containment!
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:10:48 PM)
really? And how did you manage that one?
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:11:22 PM)
Got the technical assistive device eval and fought like hell!
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:11:34 PM)
Wow! Good for you!
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:12:01 PM)
according to the IDEA they have to be educated in the least restrictive enviroment
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:12:27 PM)
they can be in regular ed classes but they can write and keep up
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:12:45 PM)
so we used that to get the laptops and software
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:12:49 PM)
I've decided that Corey is my test case. My daughter will be 5 tomorrow and is showing all the signs of CAPD. Hopefully she has been caught early though. She will be in a special speech-language class next year
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:13:26 PM)
it always helps the younger one to have the older one with probs
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:13:45 PM)
it can get very confusing though
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:14:07 PM)
LOL! How true! I have both ends of the spectrum with my 3 kids....My middle son is gifted! LOL!
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:14:07 PM)
got the district big time for confusing them way too much
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:14:27 PM)
even wrote the wrong names on the evals!
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:14:52 PM)
Wow! Somehow that doesn't surpise me though
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:15:11 PM)
it has been a nightmare
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:15:41 PM)
I am in hopes thaat they will finally see that I am not going away
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:15:50 PM)
I know what you mean. I am dreading as my youngest gets older if I'm right about the CAPD
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:16:08 PM)
have had the help of a volunter advocacy group
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:16:20 PM)
do you ever read wrightslaw?
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:16:38 PM)
good for you! I can't say I have read that
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:16:59 PM)
this is a very good legal website
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:17:10 PM)
educational law
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:17:48 PM)
I need to go,good luck tommorow!
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:17:57 PM)
really. I tend to spend alot of time in our ministry of ed website. All the regulations and laws are on their site
socks (ID=117) (May 30, 2000 11:18:09 PM)
be praying for you like to hear how it went
CoreysMom (ID=118) (May 30, 2000 11:18:11 PM)
Night.... Thanks :o)
