hi LLWerner

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:25:07 PM)
I'm not used to chat rooms and I don't type very fast

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:25:23 PM)
hi there, first time here

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:25:27 PM)
Same with me

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:25:28 PM)

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:25:33 PM)
It's ok Patti, many people who come in here are new...it's nice you could join us

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:26:01 PM)
Dorien, I've kind of stepped back and taken the week off from about everything and just played with the kids

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:26:04 PM)
I found this

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:26:38 PM)
thank you. I have read some of the archives and I felt a little "sneaky" - like I was listening in on other peoples' converstaion. So I thought I would drop in this time

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:26:58 PM)
I was able to get the school to give my son services this summer

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:27:13 PM)
services in the summer?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:27:17 PM)
Patti, the archives are there to help..I hope they have

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:27:38 PM)
Speech

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:27:38 PM)
good for you Dorien

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:28:05 PM)
I just enjoy playing with the school

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:28:30 PM)
just to introduce myself, I am from Florida and have a daughter Sarah, who has CAPD. She was diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago. We are in the process now of having reevaluations done to measure progress.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:28:40 PM)
yes, especially one that I read with Dr. J. He was speaking to someone about helping her child to write down all homework assignments. My son has had problems with being responsible for his work

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:29:27 PM)
If I remember right, that was a fairly recent chat Ideas on how to help kids get organized are always helpful

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:29:44 PM)
LL and Patti, where are you all from?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:29:49 PM)
my son has not even been tested yet. He wil be tested in August. So I don't even know if he really does have CAPD or not

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:29:59 PM)
I am from Michigan

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:30:19 PM)
I am from Las Vegas. My son, Keith, will be 5 next month has not been diagnosed with CAPD, but it is the closest thing I can see.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:30:27 PM)
How old is your son Patti?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:30:31 PM)
he is 10

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:30:59 PM)
Is everyone on summer break now?

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:31:16 PM)
Not until next week

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:31:19 PM)
yes... we are

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:32:06 PM)
I always have felt that something was not right with him (zones out, doesn't listen well, used to have very poor eye contact (but that is improved). His 4th grade teacher is the first one fto finally do something about it.

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:32:10 PM)
how old is Sarah?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:32:16 PM)
We've been on break since June 2...I'm trying to keep both girls as busy as possible

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:32:22 PM)
Sarah will be 9 on July 1

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:33:03 PM)
I will have two going to summer school

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:33:21 PM)
Dorien, What services are you receiving during the summer?

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:34:07 PM)
I have had Tricia going so she does not lose as much with the capd

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:34:30 PM)
Will the school be doing any speech or language therapy with Tricia during the summer?

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:34:37 PM)
Speech and first time in real school

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:34:38 PM)
how often are your children receiving speech?

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:35:21 PM)
For Tricia no

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:35:26 PM)
LL.....Sarah has never received speech or language......have had a hard time getting the school to cooperate

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:35:35 PM)
the school works on reading

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:35:57 PM)
what about private?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:36:32 PM)
I have a question: If a child has CAPD, do they always have speech difficulties and reading difficulties?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:36:56 PM)
We went through the FFW program through a private slp last fall but that is the only time she's seen a slp

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 8:37:30 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:37:35 PM)
Was FF helpful?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:37:40 PM)
Patti, the type of problems a child has will be due to what form of CAPD the child has......

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:37:41 PM)
hi mlmom

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:37:57 PM)
hi mlmom happy you could join the chat tonight

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:38:20 PM)
hi mlmom

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 8:38:31 PM)
Hi. This is my first time ever in a chat. Please bear with me.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:38:41 PM)
LL....Yes I feel that FFW was helpful....at the same time we did that program Sarah also started using a FM trainer in school...between the two we have seen alot of progress

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:38:41 PM)
me too mlmom...

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:39:01 PM)
My son doesn't seem to have any trouble with reading or speech. It is mostly difficulty following directions, completing tasks, and disorganization.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:39:08 PM)
mlmom.....most people here tonight are new.....and we are very patient!!

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:39:26 PM)
hi mlmom

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:39:29 PM)
did your school provide her with the FM trainer

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:39:35 PM)
good... Keith is using an FM trainer, not sure if it helps

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:39:39 PM)
yes they did Dorien

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 8:39:54 PM)
Thanks. My daughter is 8 years old. She is scheduled for CAPD evaluation in August.

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:39:59 PM)
mine too

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:40:13 PM)
my son is also having his evaluation in August

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:40:13 PM)
I was able to get our school to provide Tricia with hers

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:40:32 PM)
LL the first day my daughter had her FM trainer I went to the school to have lunch with her...one of the little girls in her class told me how much quicker sarah was to answer now that she has that "hearing thing"

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:41:08 PM)
Our school would not do an evaluation since his grades were fine - but now his last report card is the worse of the year

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:41:17 PM)
Dorien, when I first approached my school I was told no because Sarah was on a 504 and not an IEP,,,,but after some "discussion" they school agreed

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:41:19 PM)
humm... I put the FM trainer on myself and I couldn't hear a darn thing... so I asked for a brand new one...

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:41:29 PM)
Patti, did the teacher recommend an evaluation?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:41:37 PM)
oh, i just realized you were talking about the FM, not the eval

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:42:18 PM)
Being Tricia does not have an IEP the school did not feel they should

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:42:42 PM)
the teacher filled out a report and the person from the school (I guess maybe the counselor) wrote down on a piece of paper that maybe he has CAPD and to have him tested.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:43:22 PM)
Patti, is the school still refusing to do the testing?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:43:24 PM)
they recommended testing if I wanted. that it was my choice

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:43:33 PM)
those of you with more than one child.... do you see any signs of CAPD with your other children?

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:43:34 PM)
Before Tricia was tested I was told that she had ADHD

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:43:47 PM)
I didn't akd the scholl to test, I just made the appointment with the pospital

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:43:54 PM)
ask

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:44:00 PM)
Yes my son who is 5

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:44:01 PM)
hospital

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 8:44:09 PM)
I have a 14 year old daughter who is an honor student.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:44:16 PM)
I did my testing privately also..although the school did testing at the same time

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:44:30 PM)
my youngest daughter has a frontal lisp..but no signs of capd

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:44:30 PM)
Do you think the school should have tested?

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:44:50 PM)
the schools here in LV won't test until 7 yrs of age..

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:45:18 PM)
like I said, they didn't test, I think, because his grades were good

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:45:32 PM)
Patti, I have very strong feelings toward my school district here and their testing and interpretations of the results...I will have the majority of my tests done private...

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:45:36 PM)
to be honest I would not let our school do the testing

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:46:01 PM)
Sarah is on A/B honor roll but she still has CAPD and problems due to it.....she works very very hard for her grades

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:46:02 PM)
I was thinking maybe this was best, that way, I know the results before them

Steph (ID=87) (Jun 15, 2000 8:46:03 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:46:11 PM)
hi Steph...How are you tonight?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:46:20 PM)
hi Steph

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:46:26 PM)
hello steph

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 8:46:31 PM)
Hi Steph

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:46:32 PM)
Hi Steph

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:46:35 PM)
Dorien..are you an educational advocate?

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:46:48 PM)
yes and Family

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:47:13 PM)
how long have you been working as an advocate? if you dont mind me asking

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:47:20 PM)
I always seem to be fighting with one school or another

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:47:42 PM)
about two and1/2 years

Steph (ID=87) (Jun 15, 2000 8:47:44 PM)
Hi! This is my first time here ... Debbie, I awas at your web site the other day and signed up

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 8:48:05 PM)
Debbie, what is your web site?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:48:08 PM)
Great Steph!! I hope the site has been helpful for you

Steph (ID=87) (Jun 15, 2000 8:48:22 PM)
Yes, it is a great site!

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:48:29 PM)
mlmom...this is my site..the CAPD: From the Heart

Steph (ID=87) (Jun 15, 2000 8:48:31 PM)
I have a Sarah too.

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 8:49:03 PM)
Oh. Like I said, I'm new to this. Sorry.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:49:05 PM)
The site is about to undergo alot of changes..please be patient and hang in there with me

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:49:38 PM)
it's ok mlmom....this has been my first attempt at a site......it's continually changing...

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:49:43 PM)
I only wish I found this when I first found that Tricia had CAPD

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:50:13 PM)
Dorien, how long ago was Tricia diagnosed?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:50:17 PM)
So now, because of the concerns that Brian MIGHT have CAPD, plus we have thought about it in the past, we are probable going to send our kids to a private school. The school has MAXIMUM of 24 per class (our public school has 32-33). I am hoping that the small class size would help the problems that Brian is having, but at the same time, I keep wondering if I am in denial.

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:50:36 PM)
1 1/2 years ago

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:51:10 PM)
curious to know if anyone homeschools their CAPD child?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:51:17 PM)
Dorien, if it makes you feel better the website was only started about a year ago..but the chat only started about 4 or 5 months ago...it's taking time to build

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:51:29 PM)
I go back and forth, think he has CAPD, then I think he doesn't. It is so hard waiting so long for testing.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:51:59 PM)
I should stop rambling on about my child, I'm sorry.

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:52:06 PM)
My husband stated that I was always looking for something that I would never find

Steph (ID=87) (Jun 15, 2000 8:52:09 PM)
Patti, how long before your son can be tested for CAPD?

Steph (ID=87) (Jun 15, 2000 8:52:17 PM)
i don't think you're rambling

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:52:18 PM)
August 17

Steph (ID=87) (Jun 15, 2000 8:52:28 PM)
That does seem like a while

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:52:31 PM)
Patti It's easy to be in denial . No one wants to think their little one isnt perfect in every way....and once you accept it...no one has any idea what you are talking about...

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 8:52:36 PM)
My daughter, Lauren, has been diagnosed as having Receptive Language Disability. Is anyone familiar with this LD?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:53:05 PM)
LL my kids both go to public

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:53:08 PM)
I always become obsessive about things and now this is in my thoughts so much of the time and I don';t even know yet if he has CAPD

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:53:51 PM)
Recl is trouble processing incoming language right?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:53:53 PM)
mlmom, does that she has trouble understanding what is being said?

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:53:54 PM)
I even take this to work with me now

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:54:55 PM)
dorien. when you work as an advocate, has it given you an advantage when working with the schools or is it harder advocating for your own child?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:55:01 PM)
what is Sarah's class size?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:55:27 PM)
Sarah has about 27 to 29 in a class

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:55:39 PM)
that is great - 27-29

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:55:53 PM)
I found it makes it easer I do not look at the CSE the same way

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 8:55:56 PM)
Yes. She can speak fine. She is almost 2 years behind in her Reading level, however. She has a lot of difficulty following directions and retaining information.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:56:07 PM)
We live in an area with many kids. 705 in the elementary grades k-6

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:56:13 PM)
This next year when Sarah will begin switching classes during the day...It worries me

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:57:11 PM)
yes, that is another reason we want the private school. Brian would also switch classes in the public. This private school, they don't switch until 7th grade

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:57:37 PM)
Debbie what do you do

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:58:06 PM)
I work for in the billing dept of an interent company for now

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:58:16 PM)
Dorian, what is CSE?

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:58:47 PM)
Committee on Special Education

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:58:55 PM)
oh, I see

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:58:59 PM)
I am hoping by the end of the summer to open a national non profit organization for families of children with CAPD...and to go full time with that by end of the year if i can find funding.

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:59:18 PM)
I have been told I'm not very nice to them

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:59:23 PM)
that's great debbie

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 8:59:37 PM)
thanks LL...I hope it works!

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 8:59:44 PM)
I do too!

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 8:59:50 PM)
that is great Debbie, I can see that you really put alot of work into all of this.

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 8:59:58 PM)
I hope it does too

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:00:16 PM)
Dorien, when it comes to my school im the official parent from hell....I dont care about nice anymore,,I care about getting Sarah help..when I was nice they tried to walk all over me.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:00:40 PM)
So, it seems like alot of people have trouble obtaining services, I wonder why that is

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 9:01:00 PM)
that's right... debbie, I had to get mean in order to get anything for Keith

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:01:03 PM)
The only way it is going to work is through help from alot of people coordinating information and pitching in....

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 9:01:03 PM)
Tell me about it I was ready to go to a hearing for my son

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 9:01:18 PM)
money

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:01:19 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 9:01:54 PM)
I even had a principal of a school ready to cry yesterday

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:01:57 PM)
Sorry! I had a computer malfunction

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:02:03 PM)
Patti, a big part of people getting help is in order to help, the school has to understand what CAPD is...there needs to be more public awareness of the disorder amond schools, aud and slp

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:02:15 PM)
the school may think you are the parent from hell, but what I can see you are a wonderful mom and advocate. Someday, Sarah will be so proud

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:02:31 PM)
thank you Patti, but I am the one proud of Sarah!

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:02:39 PM)
Is the disorder relatively new?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:02:46 PM)
Dorien, I'd love to have you in my corner!

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 9:03:04 PM)
I look at it as a game

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:03:29 PM)
why are the audiologists and Speech people not very aware of it?

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 9:03:36 PM)
And I have never been good at loseing

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:03:47 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:03:48 PM)
Patti, there has been research on the disorder for 10 to 15 years, but not alot of people agree what CAPD is or is not

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:03:51 PM)
they should be the experts

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:04:30 PM)
There are not alot of audiologist who test for CAPD . There are alot of efforts right now to set standards for testing.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:04:40 PM)
hi Chris!

Dorien (ID=82) (Jun 15, 2000 9:04:42 PM)
It took me 5 years to find out what was wrong with Tricia

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:04:46 PM)
So what has the research shown so far? Are there treatments that have proven to help?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:05:39 PM)
I wonder if they have trouble figuring out if the treatments help or if the child just "grows out of it"

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:05:53 PM)
Patti, it depends on what form of CAPD your child has. There is not one "cure all" treatment for CAPD since no two kids may have the same problems. Setting up remeadiation for CAPD is very indivualized for each child...or at least it should be.

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:06:15 PM)
I've just started researching ...

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:06:28 PM)
Steph. where are you from?

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:06:31 PM)
but it seems there is no "CAPD," it covers a number of different problems

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 9:06:39 PM)
The school dept. told me that they haven't tested for CAPD sooner because it just isn't done before age 8. Does anyone know if this is true? What age was your children when diagnosed CAPD?

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:06:50 PM)
Hello I am new to the chat. I am inquiring about the Sprite. Does anyone have info on this device.

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:06:54 PM)
in a sense .. I live in Virginia (Shenandoah Valley)

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:07:06 PM)
what is the sprite?

Dorien (ID=90) (Jun 15, 2000 9:07:09 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:07:17 PM)
I think it just takes the school that long to get there act together to figure out that a child has a problem

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:07:52 PM)
It is a hearing aid and fm device combined. My son has a moderate hearing loss and CAPD

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:07:55 PM)
my daughter was diagnosed at age 6 many experts dont like to test before the age of 7 or 8 due to questions of maturity of the central nervous system and how it relatest to the auditory processing

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:08:09 PM)
I told my son's first grade teacher that something wasn't right, and it took until 4th grade before a teacher followed through

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:08:23 PM)
My daughter (also Sarah will be 6 next week)

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:08:32 PM)
I'm going to go ahead and have her tested ...

Dorien (ID=90) (Jun 15, 2000 9:08:41 PM)
Does any one know what the cause of CAPD is

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:08:45 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:08:47 PM)
I have a Sarah too (Brian's older sister)

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:08:54 PM)
thougH i understand most of the tests aren't normed for 6-year-olds

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:09:06 PM)
my school originally told me that although Sarah has been diagnosed with CAPD, they were not familiar wiht it and that Sarah would be allowed to slip through the cracks.

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:09:16 PM)
great minds think alike when it comes to daughters' names ;-)

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:09:16 PM)
hi PSL

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:09:26 PM)
mlmom. I know in my case my son was suspected to have CAPD but at age five they said he was too young. Then he developed the hearing loss and couldn't test for it. They still suspect it though.

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:09:43 PM)
Hi Debbie,

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:09:53 PM)
how are you doing tonight?

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:09:55 PM)
Chris, how did your son develop hearing loss?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:09:59 PM)
hi PSL

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:10:04 PM)
Thought I'd join tonight for the first time. It's been a while since I've seen Sarah.

Dorien (ID=90) (Jun 15, 2000 9:10:28 PM)
I was told that my son will not be able to be tested until he is 8

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:10:45 PM)
oh hey! took me a minute to figure out who it was! good to see you tonight..i saw you joined the email list recently

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:11:11 PM)
I have some tests that give norms for 5 year olds but most indicate "insufficient data" for that age group.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:11:16 PM)
We don't know. Up until 98 he had normal hearing then in 99 he developed this. I think because he had a lot of ear infections, but the 4 ear nose and throat dr.'s say no. All the research I did say yes.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:11:27 PM)
Did you get your new office open?

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:11:29 PM)
Dorien, about your ? about causes of CAPD ...

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:12:19 PM)
I'm new to this, but it seems to me that, unless it is related to recurrent ear infections it's kind of unknown. In my daughter Sarah's case, I suspect genetic factors

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:12:23 PM)
Yes, I opened June 1st and have already 5 CAP evaluations scheduled! Hope to have more!

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:12:40 PM)
PSL, are you an audiologist?

LLWerner (ID=85) (Jun 15, 2000 9:12:46 PM)
does anyone suspect immunizations?

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:12:57 PM)
Yes, in private practice on Amelia Island, Florida

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:12:58 PM)
Now I am told he has nerve damage. He uses a fm device in school along with his hearing aids. So with the loss and CAPD, it is difficult to get him to understand even more

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:13:13 PM)
Please, go ahead.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:13:21 PM)
That is what the doc say. They ran different tests, but were all ok.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:13:52 PM)
This is a real surprise for me tonight everyone....PSL is the audiologist who originally diagnosed Sarah with CAPD almost 2 1/2 years ago.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:13:56 PM)
I know that this sounds like a long shot, but I have wondered (if B has CAPD), if it somehow could have been related to the fact that the umbilical cord was wrapped 3 times around his neck.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:13:58 PM)
PSL, have you ever heard of this new device? Sprite

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:14:16 PM)
PSL, congratulations on opening your new office

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:14:24 PM)
yes, congrats PSL

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:14:39 PM)
That is great PSL about the office!! Congrats!!

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:14:47 PM)
No, I'm not familiar with Sprite. Thanks for the wishes. It's exciting and scary, but there is definitely a need out there!

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:14:47 PM)
I hope your practice will be successful!!!!

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:14:57 PM)
Chris, it sounds like you and your son have been through an incredible ordeal

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:15:35 PM)
Yes, he is 7 and he is handling this better than me sometimes. The good Lord above gets us through it!!

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:15:54 PM)
:-) You have a good attitude!

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:16:13 PM)
Just a thought...have you searched out a "second opinion" I have seen children who have been tested by an audiologist, and my results were entirely different...conductive hearing loss versus nerve hearing loss.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:16:13 PM)
Sarah is going to be participating in some CAPD research studies at the U of F

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:16:24 PM)
With the hearing aids and FM system, is Chris able to function well in the classroom?

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:16:34 PM)
I need to get my school district updated and trained to handle these devices.

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:16:38 PM)
That sounds interesting, DEbbie!

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:16:50 PM)
Debbie,

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:16:58 PM)
I'd be interested in the outcomes.

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:17:22 PM)
Debbie, did you say your Sarah was dxed when she was 6 years old?

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:17:42 PM)
PSL, I have been to 4 different ENT's and they all come up with the same thing. I have trying to figure out how he developed the nerve damage, because there is no one in my family that has this. THey tell me it is genetic

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:17:55 PM)
we redid the CAPD testing the beginning of May, and I was a bit surprised at the outcome and left ear deficit showed severe this time...we are redoing the test next friday

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:18:22 PM)
left ear deficit as far as APD or a hearing loss?

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:18:25 PM)
Debbie, Just curious, who is doing the CAPD testing? U of F?

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:18:40 PM)
Yes Steph my son Jason seems to do well, but still needs constant repetition, and cues.

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:19:10 PM)
That makes sense. Does Jason enjoy school?

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:19:21 PM)
He just got the fm device this year so he is still new at.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:19:32 PM)
Dr Moncrieff will be doing the testing

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:20:08 PM)
PSL is the first audiologist who listened to what my concerns were about Sarah and decided to do the testing.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:20:20 PM)
Well, from where we live it is like 20 miles away and it is a long drive and day. That he hates, and he says he hates school. The teacher tells me he enjoys it very much.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:20:44 PM)
left ear deficit as far as CAPD..Sarah's hearing has always tested as great

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:22:04 PM)
I wonder why she has more troubl with the left ear?

Dorien (ID=90) (Jun 15, 2000 9:22:07 PM)
Chris the FM unit should help I know it helped Tricia

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:22:11 PM)
I applaud Debbie for her hard work and dedication in putting together this wonderful site for CAPD. I am VERYimpressed and will try to attend the chats on a regular basis.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:22:20 PM)
My son has had 3 sets of tubes put in his ears, and his adenoids taken out last year with the 3rd set put in. With the adenoids out, I think that has solved his ear infections.

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:22:27 PM)
chris, my daughter also said she "hared" school, even when it went Ok. Bid for attention???

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:22:49 PM)
I know! I was so impressed with the chat schedule Debbie'd set up!

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:22:56 PM)
i just found the site recently.

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:23:11 PM)
hared = hated

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:23:15 PM)
Dorien, I sure hope so. They did test him with the hearing aids and fm device, and his hearing improved, but still considered having a hearing loss.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:23:34 PM)
PSL It would be great having you join the chats! any night you'd like to guest host a chat, let me know..we'll put up a banner for you

Dorien (ID=90) (Jun 15, 2000 9:23:43 PM)
try to give him some time

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:24:04 PM)
It seems that individuals with CAPD show left ear weakness. One particular study looked at 233 ears and only 13 did NOT have left ear weakness; I've found that in the numerous tests I have administered that this IS the case. Some kids will score 100% for the right ear and less than 60% for the left ear. Just some thoughts on that..

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:24:05 PM)
PSL, if a child has no problems with reading and language, but just has problems with following directions, completing tasks, and is disorganized, would CAPD be something you would think he may have?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:24:06 PM)
PSL i am going ahead with the non profit we spoke of also..

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:24:11 PM)
I think he will. He hasn't had it long. He has come a long way.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:24:51 PM)
I do believe jasons worse ear is the left as well. How interesting. I wonder why.

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 9:25:05 PM)
Wow. Lauren's preliminary auditory processing screen showed weaker results in her left ear.

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:25:10 PM)
Patti, It would be interesting to perform the test battery or "stress" his memory skills to see.

Dorien (ID=90) (Jun 15, 2000 9:25:15 PM)
I know when Tricia got her FM unit it took up to a year to cought up

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:25:17 PM)
PSL this time on the SSW ,,Sarah scored on raw data a 31 on LNC and a 39 on LC........last time she had a 7 i believe..thats why i had you fax me the raw data to compare

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:25:22 PM)
PSL ... that is fascinating about the left ear thing ... is CAPd believed to be related to a right brain problem?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:25:33 PM)
what do you mean, "stress" him memory skills?

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:26:03 PM)
PSL, can you test someone for CAPD, and who has a hearing loss?

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:26:22 PM)
Steph, I do think it has something to do with right brain-left brain and language information being processed.

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:26:24 PM)
Patti, that sounds like my Sarah ... strong language and reading skills but real problems with following directions and focusing

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:26:24 PM)
oops..the tests in 1998 had a LC score of 6 and a LNC of 1

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:26:49 PM)
Debbie, Wow! That's a HUGE change.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:27:06 PM)
That's why we are redoing the tests..that really concerned me

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:27:21 PM)
What causes this? Does anyone know?

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 9:27:21 PM)
Did your children have difficulty learning the alphabet and then, learning to read? Before being old enough to be evaluated for CAPD?

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:27:26 PM)
CHris, There are some tests that ARE normed for hearing loss. I believe SSW is one of them.. I'm not sure if there are others.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:27:27 PM)
and were you told that she DOES have CAPD or are you still waiting for test resulsts, Steph?

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:27:41 PM)
I've wondered about Sarah's right brain in other areas. Understand I am NOT a professional. :-) But I noticed she has more trouble with coordinating the left side of her body. Her PT thinks it may be a sign OF 'neurological immaturity."

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:27:44 PM)
What is SSW?

Dorien (ID=90) (Jun 15, 2000 9:28:17 PM)
what about memory problems

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:28:28 PM)
So I know to bring this up to my audiologist.

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:28:32 PM)
Staggered Spondaic Word Test which is part of a CAP test battery. It looks at memory, sequencing, competing message, etc.

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:08:18 PM)
Auditory memory? visual memory?

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:08:27 PM)
Patti, I am still waiting to have Sarah evaluated. She has an IEP for speech ... at our last IEP meeting, May 8, I was told they think "auditory processing" might be her main issue

Dorien (ID=90) (Jun 15, 2000 9:08:33 PM)
They never told me about this part of the test

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:08:42 PM)
I thought 'what the *&^ is that??? LOL.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:08:52 PM)
Steph, so you are in the same boat as I am

Dorien (ID=90) (Jun 15, 2000 9:08:56 PM)
I would like to help Tricia

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:09:04 PM)
S's speech and motor skills are improving, but big problem with following directions, etc

ncz/Y (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:09:11 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:09:20 PM)
We've had trouble with reading.

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:09:22 PM)
Patti, did you say your eval. was scheduled for Aug/

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:09:27 PM)
steph, so she does have speech problems?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:09:33 PM)
hi ncz...it's great to see you tonight.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:09:34 PM)
yes, Aug 17

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:09:54 PM)
Aug 17, that's a LONG time to wait!

ncz/Y (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:10:16 PM)
Hi Debbie

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:10:17 PM)
Yes, when she turned 4, she was still unintelligble to non-family members. She had some articulation problems,a nd talked WAY too fast. Also, her intonation is unusual.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:10:30 PM)
I know, we have been already waiting about 2 mos (when the appt. was set)

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:10:43 PM)
When she started Kinderagrten last Fall, she sing-songed her sentences

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:10:52 PM)
Steph, are you sure about her hearing??

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:10:52 PM)
how frustrating, Patti

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:10:58 PM)
PSL.....you said you have 5 CAPD evals scheduled? can i ask if they are referals from the schools or from your practice?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:11:31 PM)
It is driving me crazy, not knowing

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:11:45 PM)
Her hearing has been screened a number of times. Though when she sees the audiologist she'll need a more in-depth hearing test, I'm told. A "baseline audiogram" instead of just a "screening." Does that sound right?

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:12:02 PM)
Debbie, Some are from Nemours, which is not performing CAP evaluations any more. Some are from Psychologists and learning specialists in Jacksonville.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:12:04 PM)
I'm just curious if the school is referring anyone for testing for CAPD or not..they told another parent i know they are not familiar with capd

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:12:25 PM)
I never knew until I talked to an audiologist that the hearing test her SLP gave her was just a screening

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:12:32 PM)
It is my school that did the referring

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:12:48 PM)
Steph, Absolutely! Kids can "fake" unskilled or untrained testers out! Get an experienced pediatric audiologist!

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:13:09 PM)
Huh. I'd never known that!

Dorien (ID=90) (Jun 15, 2000 9:13:11 PM)
no one ever told me about this testing until Tricia was 8

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:13:44 PM)
Speech/language pathologists are allowed to perform hearing screenings, but a smart kid can "pass" when in fact, may have a hearing loss! I've seen it numerous times!

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:13:51 PM)
what do you mean "screening" and "faking", etc.. I ma lost

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:13:56 PM)
Should I ask for the audiogram first, then schedule APD testing, or is it all one package? Does that quesiton make sense? :_)

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:14:47 PM)
PSL..i talk to many parents in here who's child was "diagnosed" with CAPD by a slp

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:14:55 PM)
so then how do you know if the hearing test result was correct, or if a child "faked it"

SBeningo (ID=93) (Jun 15, 2000 9:15:22 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:15:24 PM)
Patti, for a screening, the sound is set at a certain loudness level and the child passes or fails. Kids are VERY anxious when they take a hearing test and want to do it right, so if an untrained person looks up at the child when the tone is presented, the child may take this as a cue to respond.

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 9:15:26 PM)
Does CAPD mean there is hearing loss? I thought these people could hear OK but processing and retaining what they hear is the problem area?

kmanbam (ID=94) (Jun 15, 2000 9:15:47 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:15:53 PM)
hi SBeningo...

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:15:56 PM)
hi kmanbam

SBeningo (ID=93) (Jun 15, 2000 9:16:08 PM)
Hi everyone.

kmanbam (ID=94) (Jun 15, 2000 9:16:09 PM)
hi

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:16:09 PM)
That is my question too. With my son having a hearing loss. How do I know it is accurate. I mean if he doesn't understand what he is to do. Will they think he is not hearing right.

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:16:10 PM)
Steph, I do comprehensive audiologic evaluation as part of the CAPD battery. The tests are presented in a controlled environment and presentation level depends on hearing levels.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:16:11 PM)
oh, so who should do the hearing test?

SBeningo (ID=93) (Jun 15, 2000 9:16:27 PM)
I'm just going to read what you have been talking about and try to catch up.'

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:16:32 PM)
Hi!

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:16:41 PM)
Patti, I am guessing an audiologist

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:16:50 PM)
mlmom...a child with CAPD does not neccessarily have a hearing loss......my daughter has capd and her hearing is ok...it's not whether or not she hears...it's how she process what she hears..they are two seperate issues

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:17:01 PM)
If you have ANY question about hearing, have a qualified audiologist do the hearing evaluation.

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:17:02 PM)
SBeningo, I think I recognize your name, you're Susan?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:17:11 PM)
my son's hearing test was done by an ENT Doctor

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:17:19 PM)
Patti,

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:17:25 PM)
be right back

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:17:39 PM)
Some people will bring their kids in and think they don't hear well, but in reality it is CAPD or something else. That is what I was told.

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:17:46 PM)
In my experience with ENT doctors, most have no CLUE how to administer a hearing evaluation.

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:18:10 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:18:20 PM)
hi Susan....how are you tonight?

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:18:21 PM)
Oops, hit the wrong button.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:18:25 PM)
So, if I have a CAPD eval set up (at a Major hospital) will they test his hearing?

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:18:38 PM)
I'm doing good. Just got done bathing the kids. What are you talking about.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:19:02 PM)
general questions about CAPD and evaluations

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:19:05 PM)
I have a definition of CAPD that might help . The person has normal hearing, average or above average intelligence, but has difficulty "processing" auditory information

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:19:24 PM)
Sounds like my daughter!

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:19:31 PM)
Patti, I would insist on it, but it's a good question to ask "up front."

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:19:50 PM)
If any of you are familiar with the work of Jack Katz, he defined CAPD as "What you do with what you hear"

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 9:20:12 PM)
That sounds like my Lauren.

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:20:18 PM)
Jack Katz developed the SSW Test - Staggered Spondaic Word Test

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:20:19 PM)
when I made the appt., I don't think that they asked if he already hasd ahearing test, so maybe that means they will do one

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:20:19 PM)
Doesn't a audiologist do a routine hearing test before doing the test for CAPD?

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:20:46 PM)
That's the test that was given to Emily. I didn't realized who developed it though.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:20:49 PM)
Can CAPD be over come?

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:20:56 PM)
Susan, Yes, because tests are administered according to the person's hearing levels.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:20:59 PM)
Yes, Debbie, those are the exact words the school used when they wrote down that maybe Brian has CAPD

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:21:05 PM)
just for general information of those who have joined....PSL is the audiologist who originally diagnosed my daughter with CAPD 2 1/2 years ago...she popped in as a surprise tonight to join us

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:21:16 PM)
I've been told Emily will learn to compensate for the areas she is weak in.

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:21:35 PM)
Wonderful! Nice to meet everyone!

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 9:21:36 PM)
Does Emily have trouble with reading?

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:21:37 PM)
What about that joke that Dr. J said: 3 men are walking down the street. One says it's Windy today and the other person says it's not Wednesday its Thursday. The other one says yes I am thirsty let's go get a drink. Deb--did I get that right??

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:21:56 PM)
lol

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:21:59 PM)
ncz... you got it!! *LOL*

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:22:20 PM)
I think that really describes how CAPD people process info.

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:22:22 PM)
mlmom, it depends....new words will throw her off especially if there is a lot of sounding out involved.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:22:33 PM)
the sad part of that is ncz..that it's nto a joke to our kids..it's a way of life for many of them

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:22:33 PM)
LOL

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:22:40 PM)
From my experience, people with CAPD "develop strategies", but never really overcome CAPD. My husband is in his 50's and has classic CAPD symptoms...terrible reader, speller, but a VERY successfull business man that retired at 50! Iguess he developed strategies to overcome his weaknesses.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:22:41 PM)
Is anyone here from Michigan?

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 9:23:12 PM)
My daughter thought the work 'pitbulls' was 'pimples' yesterday.

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:23:16 PM)
For the most part she reads quite well.

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:23:16 PM)
I loved that joke! lol

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:23:45 PM)
Yes --believe me it's not joke. I deal with it everyday-sometimes I get frustrated other times I laugh and then other times I think oh dear how is my son going to make it.

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:23:45 PM)
mlmom..auditory pitbulls or visual??

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:23:58 PM)
Sometimes I have to laugh when Emily thinks I've said one thing but actually I've said another. It takes the tension off sometimes.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:24:01 PM)
My son gets p d b confused. Now that could be determined as not hearing it or processing it. right.

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:24:09 PM)
i.e., reading or hearing the words?

mlmom (ID=86) (Jun 15, 2000 9:24:14 PM)
Oops. I meant word not work.

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:24:16 PM)
that reminds me of something Sarah said ...

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:24:23 PM)
ncz....I know exactly how you feel. It is so frustrating for us.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:24:37 PM)
both

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:24:39 PM)
Debbie

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:24:58 PM)
Brian doesn't misinterpret words, but he has said "nobody ever tells me what is going on".

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:25:22 PM)
He isn't as tuned in to what is going on as my daughter

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:25:26 PM)
This is difficult for me because I don't know at times if he is hearing it right or processing it right. You know what I mean?

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:25:35 PM)
i picked her up from school and she told me they'd learned about an artist named "Bingo," who'd painted a starry night painting. When i told her it was Van Gogh, she didn't believe me.

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:25:55 PM)
Do your kids do this.....we tell her we are going someplace like the mall and she has a hard time remembering where we said we were going and will ask over and over where we are going again?

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:26:01 PM)
Steph, my son does the same thing.

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:26:04 PM)
Debbie Sorry --my son is doing fast forward--doing great on Block Commander but the auditory descrimination game Circus Sequence is throwing him for a loop. The SLP said the game deals with high-low frequency tones. How did Sarah do last summer on Circus Sequence???

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:26:27 PM)
Chris, CAPD is often THOUGHTto be hearing loss.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:26:34 PM)
she hated circus sequence....but finally she started getting it! she never did do well with OMDFF

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:26:37 PM)
I get frustrated sometimes. It is so overwhelming sometimes. But we take one day at a time.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:26:45 PM)
That is why is am wondering, maybe B doesn't have CAPD, since he doesn't seem to misinterpret the words, he just doesn't always "listen" to what is being said

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:27:01 PM)
Patti, Sarah is the same way

Dorien (ID=90) (Jun 15, 2000 9:27:12 PM)
Tricia does that all the time Susan

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 9:27:14 PM)

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:27:20 PM)
Patti, Try having him repeat what you said. You might be surprised at how many times he is right. He was hearing, just not listening.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:27:22 PM)
hey spoc lady!

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 9:27:32 PM)
Hi Guys!

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:27:40 PM)
good to see you again!

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:27:47 PM)
Hi!

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:27:47 PM)
yes, I have done that and he has heard what I said, but he says "what?"

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 9:28:08 PM)
Good to be back.... so many things happening with Jessica this summer.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:28:16 PM)
so, do you think it sounds like he does not have CAPD?

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:28:21 PM)
PSL, I know. Before my son had his hearing loss. The aud. said he had this but he was too young to test for it. Then a year later when he had the loss. She couldn't test she said because he had the loss. It wouldn't be accurate. ]

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:28:28 PM)
My son says what after everything I say--I now think he does it out of habbit.

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:28:28 PM)
Sometimes I think Emily quits listening because she gets overwelmed by all the auditory coming in her brain.

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:28:46 PM)
PSL, I'll try that, having Sarah repeat what I say ... she seems to discriminate sounds fine most of the time, though> I'm guessing she has more of a problem with auditory memory

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:28:50 PM)
ncz....sarahs tends to say "i forgot" out of habit now too

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:28:59 PM)
That makes sense, Susan.

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:28:59 PM)
I think a lot of kids do that out of habit! Or to get attention??

kmanbam (ID=94) (Jun 15, 2000 9:29:19 PM)
saying what gives him time to actually process

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:29:22 PM)
it's hard to tell sometimes what is CAPD and for sarah..what is just being an 8 year old

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:29:27 PM)
I am trying to break this habbit but asking him to think for a minute about what i said.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:29:31 PM)
I don't understand something PSL. How can his hearing be normal from day one to 1998 and then in 99 he developed nerve damage or something genetic. I don't get it?

Susan (ID=95) (Jun 15, 2000 9:29:37 PM)
Steph, that is what I do with Emily. Make her repeat what I've told her. It really helps to train her to listen carefully.

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:29:38 PM)
that makes sense, kmanbam

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:29:47 PM)
Susan, Kids with CAPD do frequently get overwhelmed or overloaded with auditory information.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:29:56 PM)
Chris, maybe the first hearing test results were wrong

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:30:00 PM)
That's a good idea Susan

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:30:36 PM)
Chris, If you are absolutely CERTAIN his hearing was normal from day one, could be high fever in the night that you never knew about or????

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:30:37 PM)
He has had numerous ones within that year from different dr.'s and they were all the same

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:30:56 PM)
Susan....both times Sarah has been tested for CAPD, i was fortunate enough to be able to watch while she took the SSW test....it was the most eye opening thing i've seen in my life!! you could see her going into "overload"

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:30:57 PM)
Chris, did he become ill prior to the hearing loss. Like a fever or virus, or something. Doesn't Lyme disease cause neerve damage?

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:31:08 PM)
No

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:31:09 PM)
Debbie, is there a good web site that lists the different forms of CAPD? Is that the right term ... like auditory memory, decoding ....

Dorien (ID=90) (Jun 15, 2000 9:31:42 PM)
Good night

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:31:45 PM)
in the archives of this chat i do have one chat with dr j, that list four basic approaches to capd...i can try and find the date for you

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:31:50 PM)
goodnight dorien

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:32:04 PM)
Steph, so maybe our kids have Autory MEMORY prbolems, is that still called CAPD?

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:32:20 PM)
I think I saw that archive ... neurological approach, etc ???

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:32:31 PM)
i've saved it in my favorite places too if you'd like to email me i can send it to you..my email is capdfromtheheart@aol.com

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:32:35 PM)
yes steph that is it

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:32:37 PM)
He did have a very bad ear infection one time, and stuff came out of his ears. Antibiotics didn't cure it. He had to get 2 injections in his behind. to get rid of it. I suspect that.

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:32:39 PM)
Patti, auditory memory is one of the numerous "auditory skill areas" that encompasses CAPD

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:33:20 PM)
Chris, usually ear infections by themselves do not cause "nerve damage" but the fever associated with them could.

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:33:25 PM)
Patti, that's what i think Sarah has. Which instruments test for auditory memory?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:33:36 PM)
Okay, so maybe my son has Auditory MEMORY problems, since he does not seem to misinterpret sounds

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:33:56 PM)
PSL may correct me if I am wrong...but there is not set types of CAPD,, many audiologist are trying to fit CAPD into different categories so that they can approach remeadiation that way....but it is not always a cut and dry type of capd..each child may have different levels of processing.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:34:14 PM)
Can';t chicken pox cause nerve damage, I know that Shingles can

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:34:23 PM)
S. has very good receptive language skills. But if I tell her "go up and get your shoes and socks," and ask her a minute later 'what did I just ask you to do?" she can't tell me.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:34:33 PM)
He was tested Cat Scan. TO see if his bone structure developed right inside. Normal. He was also tested for different autoimmune disorders too. They were normal too.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:34:58 PM)
Chris, did your son have chicken pox that year or receive the vaccine?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:35:37 PM)
That sounds like B, he remembers only one of the things

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:35:38 PM)
Debbie, you are right. There are many "skill areas" in people with CAPD. Some may have auditory memory problems, or sequencing problems, or integration, decoding, binaural separation problems, etc...

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:36:15 PM)
that was what I was wondering about .. the list PSL just offered. is there a site that explains those?

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:36:20 PM)
No, he just had them last nov. and never had a fever with them. He hardly had any. My daughter had them over Christmas and was miserable. Fever and all.

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:36:34 PM)
Patti, B has trouble with multi-step directions?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:36:45 PM)
So for the auditory MEMORY problem, the FM deviced would not work, right?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:36:56 PM)
yes, steph

When Sarah was originally dx with CAPD, she had alot of problems with background discrimination and some decoding skills,,,how she seems to be doing average to above average in those areas, but is showing the severe left ear deficit...which has been explained to me as a higher level of processing and now getting to the root of her CAPD...(sooooooo confusing sometimes)

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:37:27 PM)
It sounds like B (Brian?) and Sarah could be twins ...

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:37:40 PM)
Yes, it sure does

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:38:02 PM)
FM Systems help reduce the signal-to-noise ratio in a listening situation. i.e., teacher's voice in a background of classroom noise. It helps the child focus.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:38:03 PM)
welcome back mlmom

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:38:05 PM)
that is confusing Debbie ... you must get so overwhelmed at times

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:38:26 PM)
PSL. Is that all that really does?

mlmom (ID=97) (Jun 15, 2000 9:38:33 PM)
Thanks

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:38:33 PM)
The fm device I mean

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:38:40 PM)
So, the FM system is only helpful if understanding speech in noise is a problem?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:38:46 PM)
just a bit Steph..but I know I have to keep going for Sarah.....as long as I know we are making progess even in little steps...

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:38:55 PM)
Chris, technically, yes.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:38:59 PM)
so when they are focusing, then their brain receives the information normally?

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:39:05 PM)
sounds like you're doing wonderfully for Sarah

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:39:16 PM)
Sarah is the one doing the work =)

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:39:30 PM)
So seeing how my son doesn't hear well. How could he do well with this.

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:39:35 PM)
The FM systems can help any child with learning disabilities, ADD, ADHD, CAPD, however they may have a negative effect if the child is sensitive to certain noises.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:39:37 PM)
PSL,,i told Sarah that you were in the chat tonight..she say hi!

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:39:52 PM)
Steph, not necessarily. If a child has trouble staying "on task" often the lower level of background noise can help them stay on task.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:40:03 PM)
Sooooooo confusing

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:40:04 PM)
debbie, Hello, Sarah my doll!

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:40:21 PM)
That is interesting ... the 'auditory trainer" was recommended for S, because she has trouble focusing...

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:40:29 PM)
Kendra says to say hi too!!

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:40:41 PM)
FM systems MUST be adjusted to be certain they are not TOO LOUD and may damage a child's hearing.

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:40:43 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:40:43 PM)
we don't know whether background noise is specifically a problem, but that makes sense

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:40:52 PM)
Hi Miss Kendra

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:41:03 PM)
I keep getting knocked off! lol

Steph (ID=88) (Jun 15, 2000 9:41:19 PM)
I had that happen earlier, Susan ARRGGHHH!!

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:41:24 PM)
It is helping, but still has problems with sequencing, and speech. Still needs verbal cues. Constant repetion with stuff

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:41:25 PM)
Susan,,are you closing your browser once the chat opens?

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:41:26 PM)
PSL... I have a question?

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:41:41 PM)
No, someone called and it disconnected me.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:42:09 PM)
oh ok...i just did an upgrade on the chat so hopefully people wouldnt get bumped as often

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:42:17 PM)
Yes, Susan?

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:42:33 PM)
PSL... Emily Total % error for was 37 on her SSW test. What does that mean?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:42:35 PM)
uh oh, I think Steph got bumped

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:42:40 PM)
I think so too.

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:43:03 PM)
PSL--yes of course it could damage a child's hearing with a personal FM system- There are several types--the Toteable which sits on the desk and of course the FM classroom system--I am sure there are more useful devices out there but I am still researching options.

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:43:46 PM)
The results didn't indicate a Type "A" pattern. What does that mean. I have a full discription of the test but wondered what you could tell me also.

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:44:10 PM)
Susan, is that the raw SSW? The scoring procedure on the SSW is quite complex...Some correlate it with 63%!?

Steph (ID=99) (Jun 15, 2000 9:45:16 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:45:29 PM)
PSL - how much does a smaller class size (therefore more quiet environment) help someone with CAPD? Does it play a MAJOR role in helping a child with CAPD?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:45:43 PM)
welcome back, Steph!

Steph (ID=99) (Jun 15, 2000 9:45:54 PM)
Thanks!

Steph (ID=99) (Jun 15, 2000 9:46:06 PM)
technology eternally confounds me!

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:46:16 PM)
me too!!

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:46:16 PM)
PSl..I'm not sure about the raw SSW. It just showed total % error for her was 37 %. It really is a confusing test. I have to read it a lot to understand what they did and how she scored.

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:46:40 PM)
I am an advocate of FM systems and I do believe that smaller class size is a necessity for a child with CAPD!

Steph (ID=99) (Jun 15, 2000 9:46:47 PM)
what does the SSW measure agaiN?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:46:50 PM)
I guess I am really hoping that the smaller class size next year will help my son

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:46:58 PM)
Emily does have significant errors for all of the presented units of words. And a significant amounf of reversals at 13 reversals noted.

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:47:22 PM)
Susan, Jack Katz actually gives "workshops" to learn how to score and interpret the SSW. It is really a quite complex scoring procedure.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:47:35 PM)
PSL, that is the one my son uses in school. The teacher uses the microphone to speak, and he has the other to receive the info.

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:47:40 PM)
It must be if he offers workshops! lol

Steph (ID=99) (Jun 15, 2000 9:47:44 PM)
Sarah's principal assigned her to the smallest 1st grade class for next year. There are 15 kids, a teacher and a FULL time aid. They are also considering an auditory trainer. Is that the same as an FM system?

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:47:51 PM)
We have never used the FM system yet.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:48:12 PM)
The school has told me that Sarah will be allowed to have an FM next year also.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:48:19 PM)
That is great, Steph. There is no such thing as a small class in our public school

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:48:23 PM)
SSW measures auditory memory, auditory sequencing, auditory binaural separation, etc.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:48:30 PM)
that is why we want to go Private

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:48:30 PM)
Steph...that will really help Sarah. Just continue to stay in close contact with her teacher on Sarah's daily work.

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:48:34 PM)
Yes, an auditory trainer is the same thing as an FM system.

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:48:55 PM)
a personal FM system

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:49:06 PM)
???

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:49:09 PM)
Brian had 32-33 kids in his class this year

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:49:19 PM)
no aaaide

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:49:20 PM)
I have only heard GOOD things about CAPD and/or hearing impaired kids using FM systems

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 9:49:20 PM)
Sorry to jump in..just wanted to let you know some of the latest I learned. J's preliminary audiologist's report today (1st one in 97) shows significant delay in auditory memory, temporal separation (hearing 2 diff. sentences on left/right ears - no comprehension), auditory figure ground, auditory closure and bad scores on Dicotec (sp?) test. Pretty depressing... but... we saw a neurologist last wk who is ordering Tova tests (on/off meds), appts. with neuropsychologist soon (wks w/many CAPD kids), and beginning neruofeedback program at local Children's Hospital soon. Also, starting Earobics at home tomorrow (finished FF1/2 in April). I am ordering a program "Question the Direction" to do at home, too. And finding out many more interesting things. There are great developments in neuroplasicity (sp.?) and should be more programs like FF, etc. soon. My audiologist will have her Doctorate soon and is very into CAPD. So we have a great team. Sorry - took up the whole page with this one! Oh.. and Audio. is ordering a temporal processing test.

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:49:25 PM)
I wonder if they will offer the FM system to Emily? She will attend public school for the first time this coming school year.

Steph (ID=99) (Jun 15, 2000 9:49:29 PM)
That is a lot for ANY kid Patti!

Patti what grade is BRIAN in??

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:49:46 PM)
They tell me it isn't necassary to use this at home just at school. Is that accurate?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:49:56 PM)
spoc..where did you get the information on question the direction?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:50:03 PM)
hi Dee happy you could join us!

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:50:07 PM)
Brian was in 4th this year

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:50:22 PM)
Susan, I would ask. It would benefit her.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:50:55 PM)
Chris, my daughter Sarah only uses her FM at school

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:51:18 PM)
Chris, typically, the FM is for use at school, but I do have parents of hearing impaired kids who DO use them at home.

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:51:22 PM)
TOVA test--which my son took as well and passed--is Test on Variables of Attention--computer game format--very boring for the child but only for 20-30 minutes--right??

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 9:51:27 PM)
First from a wonderful Dr. at Language Disorders clinic... was used by SLP in school. Is very very good to teach children to question what they do not understand... will post info in a second.. I think there is a website... I always thought must be done by prof.. until today.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:51:54 PM)
So does my school. I just thought it would help too at home. Because of having my daughter and TV and fiance in the back ground.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:52:02 PM)
spoc can you email me any info you have?

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:52:24 PM)
I guess I just have to be patient.

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 9:52:26 PM)
not real sure about Tova.. but neurologist and audiologist did note it shld differentiate bet. cAPD and ADD

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:52:28 PM)
I plan on getting in touch with her new school right after we move and schedule a meeting. I want her placed with a teacher who will be willing to work with Emily in the classroom.

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 9:52:35 PM)
Helps to pinpoint the probs.

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:52:36 PM)
Chris, maybe give him a break at home and he won't object to using it at school, where he really needs it.

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:54:32 PM)
I plan on ordering the Earobics to use this summer and also order some workbooks to use at home from a website that offers AP and other LD workbooks.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:54:34 PM)
I agree. I tend to push him a liitle. The school says the samething

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:54:38 PM)
Just because my son passed the TOVA test doesn't mean he does not have attention problem. My son is incredible at computer games so it doesn't surprise me that he passed it --no medication .

dee (ID=100) (Jun 15, 2000 9:54:45 PM)
I am new at CAPD and am starting a Fast Forword program this summer. Does anyone have personal experience with this?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:54:55 PM)
PSL just out of curiosity have you ever attended any meetings at schools with parents in this area?

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:55:07 PM)
I just want to help, but I don't want to discourage him either.

Steph (ID=99) (Jun 15, 2000 9:55:19 PM)
I know what you mean ncz, some kids seem to just be able to ace computer games

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 9:55:34 PM)
Susan... can you give me the website name on the workbooks? Sounds great... I saw the website http://www.gift-inc.com/index.html from a posting on the list.

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:55:36 PM)
Chris

PSL (ID=91) (Jun 15, 2000 9:55:36 PM)
There certainly are a great deal of similarities between ADD and CAPD. I've seen kids and the parents tell me they have ADD, but they can sit for the entire test session without fidgeting! I then question CAPD and often that is the problem.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:55:39 PM)
dee...my daughter went through FFW last fall at the same time she began using an FM system....she's made great progress.

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 9:55:47 PM)
sorry Chris--how old is your son??

Steph (ID=99) (Jun 15, 2000 9:55:51 PM)
We just started earobics yesterday. of course, I jumped the gun, we haven't had APD assessed yet.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:56:04 PM)
ncz my son is 7

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:56:25 PM)
Steph..you dont have to have CAPD or APD to use earobics...=)

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:56:25 PM)
spocMary....that's the one I'm talking about. Have you tried going to that website yet? I hope I entered the addy right. The catalog arrived really quickly.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 9:56:30 PM)
what is the diff between earobics and fast forward?

dee (ID=100) (Jun 15, 2000 9:56:35 PM)
How does eararobics work and FM system?

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 9:56:39 PM)
Unfortunately... J appears to have severe CAPD and also some ADD...

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:57:00 PM)
spocMary...it's called Great Ideas in Teaching.

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 9:57:17 PM)
Dee... we did FF 1/2 at home - I was in tears over the progress ... it is super!

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 9:57:23 PM)
Tks Susan

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:57:28 PM)
If you all watch the announcements on the email lists..I"ll try to get someone back in a thursday night chat to speak about both programs again...

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 9:57:35 PM)
What is this FF

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:57:50 PM)
PSL...Bingo! I believe a lot more kids that were being dx with ADD are actually CAPD. Do you agree?

dee (ID=100) (Jun 15, 2000 9:58:08 PM)
spocMary...Did you do the second program SLc provides?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:58:15 PM)
FFW is a program offered by SLC..their website is www.scientificlearning.com

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 9:58:17 PM)
I agree totally Susan.....

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 9:59:04 PM)
dee... we did FF1 and then Step Forward (prev. FF2)... 6 wks each ... did at home - much cheaper

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 9:59:13 PM)
I'm just waiting for someone to label Emily with ADD or suggest we get her tested for it.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 9:59:22 PM)
the website for Earobics is www.cogcon.com and they have an online demo at www.earobics.com

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 10:00:04 PM)
What does the FF do?

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 10:00:39 PM)
Debbie... I will try to remember to email you some of the info I learned today and last week. In the meantime... the Question the Direction (also Question the Information) is from Lingui Systems, Inc. at 1-800-Pro-Idea ..... I'm sure is on the web.. just haven't lkd yet.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 10:01:00 PM)
I will have to check the site out. Is this expensive? Is it covered under insurance?

dee (ID=100) (Jun 15, 2000 10:01:09 PM)
I have had trouble with some family, trying to explain my daughter has CAPD and what it it--I think they think that she is just a brat. What do you do to explain to others the problem or get them to understand when they don't?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:01:10 PM)
I have the web for Lingui Systems..I've ordered books from them before..

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 10:01:44 PM)
Patti- 4th grade is a very important year. My son (now 11) was in a portable building in 4th grade with severe background noise problems and 19 kids in the class. He should have been a fly on the wall as he didn't learn a thing the entire year. His grades dropped and the TAAS scores in reading/writing dropped 12 points (TAAS=Texas Assessment for Acadamic Skills) FYI

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:01:45 PM)
Chris..the idea behing FFW is that it retrains the brain on how to hear...it can be expensive and most insurances do not cover it...

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 10:01:48 PM)
did you like the books.... I'm excited about Question the Direction... very high recommendations from experts here.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:02:07 PM)
the books i got were very tech...more for use by an slp than parent...

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:02:10 PM)
dee....I have the same problem explaining what's wrong with Emily. A lot of times they just think shes not listening or being rude by not answering their questions. I usually answer for her.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 10:02:10 PM)
Debbie, where do you get this?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:02:30 PM)
ncz, that is too bad, your district sounds like mine, OVERCROWDED!

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:02:46 PM)
if you go to the website,,there is a list of providers so you can locate on in your area,,,if you have trouble..let me knwo and i can put you in touch with one via the net

dee (ID=100) (Jun 15, 2000 10:02:59 PM)
Susan...so do you try to educate others or just let their misunderstanding continue?

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 10:03:15 PM)
ok Debbie thanks. what is your email. In case I have problems.

ncz/tx (ID=92) (Jun 15, 2000 10:03:18 PM)
sorry Pattie--my father is an accoustical engineer and confirmed the noise problem in the portable building.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 10:03:39 PM)
Is there another one out there that is the same thing as the FF but cheaper.

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:03:41 PM)
dee...no I educate them. Probably giving them more info then they care to hear! lol

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:03:42 PM)
Dee, Susan, that is interesting, I wonder if some kids think Brian is not friendly (or a brat) because of poor eyc contack and doesn't always respond

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:03:57 PM)
He has trouble keeping friends

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 10:04:06 PM)

GOT TO GO--my daughter wants the computer again!!!!

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:04:42 PM)
bye ncz

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 10:04:43 PM)
duh!!

dee (ID=100) (Jun 15, 2000 10:04:54 PM)
Patti...my daughter has a hard time socially as well and I think she is misunderstood. How do you teach social skills to someone who can't focus in on inuendo?

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:05:05 PM)
dee....I tell them that she has a hard time hearing certain things and that she gets overwelmed by so much incoming info that she might not hear them and to make sure they tap her on the shoulder or call her name to be sure she has their attention. Then she will talk to them.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:05:19 PM)

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:05:40 PM)
Patti and dee.. I wonder that about Emily too. Keeping friends and such.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:06:20 PM)
I will ask Brian, "why don't you play with Scott anymore". He says 'I don't know, he doesn't like me anymore"

dee (ID=100) (Jun 15, 2000 10:06:35 PM)
It is hard to get others to really understand when she does not look disabled, sometimes does get it, but not always. What do you tell your child about this disorder?

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 10:06:45 PM)
Oh... and another great booklet I got today from audiol. Called "Understanding Central Auditory Processing Disorder" by Dorothy A. Kelly ... from TheraGuides. It teaches you all about CAPD... really good booklet.... it asks questions over what you learned. Recommended for teachers, etc. and one items sez it provides important, fundamental info about CAPD to professionals. It tells you what it is,explains neural plasticity, milestones in CAPD development, symptoms, so much more. Has a self-quiz and glossary. From Communication Skill Builders 1-800-228-0752 - there's probably a website.

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:06:50 PM)
That is so frustrating for me right now...how she will interact socially. I fear that the worst because kids can be so cruel.

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 10:06:51 PM)
Well, I am leaving. I think this site and chat room is GREAT!!! It was very helpful, and interesting. I WILL BE BACK!!! Thank You All for ALL your help and advice! IT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!!!

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:07:10 PM)
Brian isn't evern having the testing until August, so I have'nt even told him yet

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:07:16 PM)

Thanks for joining us

Chris (ID=89) (Jun 15, 2000 10:07:34 PM)
Nite

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:08:22 PM)
I have heard Emily interacting with her friends in school and some of the things she says I know don't make sense to some of the kids.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:08:31 PM)
Should I tell him now about the testing, my daughter (very smart) was looking over my shoulder earlier, trying to find out what kind of chat room I am in

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:09:01 PM)
it's funny...Sarah knows I"m in a chatroom for CAPD...she asks if you all have kids like her...*S*

Steph (ID=101) (Jun 15, 2000 10:09:04 PM)

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 10:09:06 PM)
and also... reading a lot on the "Mozart Effect" - music sure couldn't hurt anything... fascinating data on studies listening to Mozart music. Improved thinking and has calming effect... still cking into it. Worth trying - will post more on the list after digging more.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:09:28 PM)
welcome back steph

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:09:34 PM)
I have a feeling though Emily will probably have only a couple close friends that she will be able to communicate well with and vise versa.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:09:35 PM)
I just didn't know if I should explain all this ovedrwhelming stuff when the test isn't until August

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:10:05 PM)
debbie. How sweet! lol

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:10:14 PM)
take your time patti....it's hard to explain to a child when most adults dont understand

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:10:47 PM)
I guess Brian was right, like I said earlier, that no one ever tells him what's going on

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:11:10 PM)
Susan, Sarah knows she had CAPD and that she Hears different...Sarah is very open about her "hearing" and tells people about it..she's a great kid!! Sarah has talked to some kids on here..

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:11:18 PM)
He is my baby (youngest)

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:11:32 PM)
debbie...how old is Sarah?

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 10:11:34 PM)
Susan.. how old is Emily. She sounds exactly like my Jessica. At age 10... the social problems reached a scary high - which prompted my obsession with getting help. Nightime cries begging for help to learn new words so she could talk to friends. One friend for 9 years. After FF, she gained 2 more. Still a ways to go.

Steph (ID=101) (Jun 15, 2000 10:11:39 PM)
I'm having a lot of trouble using this window, it has't been scrolling down right :-(

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:11:44 PM)
she will be 9 on July 1

dee (ID=100) (Jun 15, 2000 10:11:50 PM)
My daughter is actually very sweet and loving but a lot of times children are rude to her and she doesn't even know. In some ways that is good but I fear when she is older that she needs to be better at social interactions. Has anyone done behavior therapy or have any ideas on how to improve social skills?--How old is Sarah...debbie?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:12:05 PM)
im sorry steph...try stretching the screen up a bit bigger and see it it helps..

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:12:27 PM)
Emily is 7. She can make friends with anyone. Very social. I call her my social butterfly! ;-)

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:12:54 PM)
But, I worry that other kids will think she "wierd" the older she gets and peer groups become more important.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:13:04 PM)
Dee, I know what you mean. My son had his last hockey game of the season, and the coaches son said to B "You suck!" and B said "he was just mad that our team lost the playoffs"

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:13:05 PM)
PSL was surprised when she first met Sarah at how outgoing she was....

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:13:31 PM)
kids can be so mean to each other

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:13:38 PM)
Sarah can make friends..she has trouble keeping them long term

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:13:45 PM)
I'm hoping her good attitude towards lilke and general will help her through this.

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:14:04 PM)
debbie. I wonder if Emily will have the same problem?

dee (ID=100) (Jun 15, 2000 10:14:04 PM)
My daughter Makenna is very outgoing. She has strong social reactions from others. They love her or don't. I am just concerned about her teenage years.

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:14:17 PM)
that life not lilke! geez

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:14:29 PM)
How about next week we do a chat on social interaction?

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:14:41 PM)
oooh!! Yes!

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:14:41 PM)
I'll see if i can get a guest speaker to help out

Steph (ID=101) (Jun 15, 2000 10:14:42 PM)
That sounds like a great idea

dee (ID=100) (Jun 15, 2000 10:14:50 PM)
That would be wonderful!

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:14:52 PM)
I would be interested.

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 10:14:54 PM)
You are right Susan... J was OK at 7 and 8... even with few friends. But 4th grade, age 10, is when girls want to start in-depth conversations... they are very cruel and entering the "gossip" stage (not all of them). J became extremely self-conscious. Kids would laugh when she messed up a word.

Steph (ID=101) (Jun 15, 2000 10:14:58 PM)
Sarah is also quite outgoing and friendly, but some trouble with social skills

Steph (ID=101) (Jun 15, 2000 10:15:22 PM)
that must be so hard, spocmary

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:15:32 PM)
Sounds like we need some help with this social question for CAPD kids. Has anything been written on that?

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:15:58 PM)
Sarah's teachers tell me how well liked she is..yet i never hear her talk of close friends other than her sister..

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:16:04 PM)
Any of your kids involved in sports, dancing, or extra stuff for sociallizing?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:16:35 PM)
Yes, Brian plays roller hockey. Rarely ever scores a goal, but still wants to stickke with it

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:16:37 PM)
I just put both my girls on a swim team

dee (ID=100) (Jun 15, 2000 10:16:49 PM)
I put my daughter in physical things to help large motor skills as well as socialization. Some success, some not.

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 10:16:57 PM)
it's tough for a mother to watch. I've seen some info, Susan... not sure where. Will try to locate. And the teachers think that J is great socially, also. It's like they are blind to the real problems.

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:17:20 PM)
Let me ask a general question......some parents have expressed that they would like to see a kids chat again.....would you all like that?

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:17:21 PM)
I am wondering if martial arts (karate) might help for these kids

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:17:31 PM)
spocMary. I agree! This hurts my heart for her and everyone elses kids!

dee (ID=100) (Jun 15, 2000 10:17:55 PM)
I was considering Suzuki because it involves hearing. My husband wants to but I'm not sure.

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:18:01 PM)
I think Emily would like that. She reads when I chat with friends via email and IM's

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:18:21 PM)
It is very hard to be watching the hockey game and hear a parent make a comment under his breath if your child screws up a play

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:18:41 PM)
Patti...I've wondered that too for some reason. Do you think it's the concentration part?

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 10:18:42 PM)
J was not interested on the penpal thing - and I'm afraid chat, also. She doesn't like to think she has a problem. Very hard for me to convince her.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:18:49 PM)
But Brian doesn't seem to care that he isn't very good

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:18:56 PM)
at playing the game, that is

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:19:17 PM)
the kids dont have to chat about capd..they can chat about anything...

dee (ID=100) (Jun 15, 2000 10:19:18 PM)
My daughter is a little young and I still haven't told her about her disorder. We talk about it all the time but she doesn't focus in enough to know we are talking about her .

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 10:19:21 PM)
I only talk about the problems with talking about a lot of people, etc. Her self-esteem is so fragile right now ... this is a tough time for her.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:19:23 PM)
yes, the concentration would pbobable help

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 10:19:36 PM)
sorry.. "talking around (not about)"

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:19:56 PM)
My son only wants to use the internet for looking at race cars and dirt bikes

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:20:10 PM)
Patti...lol

Susan (ID=98) (Jun 15, 2000 10:20:56 PM)
Well I gotta go put the kids to bed. This has been fun and informative. I don't feel so alone in my thinking. I would love to chat with ya'll again.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:20:58 PM)
he has AMAZING memory of info. about cars, dirt bikes and things like that, but can't remmber to bring his book home or where he left something

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 10:20:58 PM)
I think she may be receptive and this would be a new skill to learn - she could brag to her friends that she was in a "chat room". I would just promote it as chatting with other kids. I think I'd like to try it...

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:21:02 PM)
Patti, we use to use the internet for reading football pressreleases

debbie (ID=81) (Jun 15, 2000 10:21:16 PM)
goodnight Susan...hope to see you back again soon!@

dee (ID=100) (Jun 15, 2000 10:21:22 PM)
I would like to maybe have a chat about socialization skills or helps for parents though. I've got to go. It's been fun for my first time--thanks for the support and the info.

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:21:23 PM)

The neurofeedback program lks like it would be great for CAPD kids...

Patti (ID=84) (Jun 15, 2000 10:22:38 PM)
I think I am going to go too. THANK YOU Debbie for having this website and chat. I don;t know anyone with a child with CAPD. No one to talk to

spocMary (ID=96) (Jun 15, 2000 10:22:45 PM)
