Hi, my name is Joyce. My daughter Leah, 8 years old has been diagnosed with CAPD and I am trying very hard to help her. She is easily frustrated, as the written language seems to have no meaning for her. I am so scared what the future might hold. Please help!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:05:40 PM)
that what they tell me, think I'll keep her around for awhile longer, we are reknewing our wedding vows this November

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:06:10 PM)
Oh, that's wonderful! I think that's great! How long have you been married?

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:06:45 PM)
will be ten years

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:07:02 PM)
Ahhh...I'm going on 9 in Sept.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:08:06 PM)
told when we got married we would reknew our vows at the ten year mark

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:08:56 PM)
I'll tell you....your wife is doing such a wonderful thing here! Helping soooo many people...like myself. Hey, I think I'll mentin your idea to my husband....great idea!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:10:38 PM)
yes she sure has, she just got tired of all the BS from the school district and duval county teachers

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:10:55 PM)
And, I think it's great that you are involved...by hosting the Tues. nite chat....

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:11:49 PM)
this way I learn things that I don't know since I don't get to go to the dr. meeting with her

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:11:49 PM)
Since I spoke with her this AM, I have pulled my sons IEP, etc, trying to get myself armed for battle!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:12:21 PM)
that what you have to do since school has started

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:12:58 PM)
I was on chat this AM w/ Dr. J....how great...it was my 1st chat, this is now my 2nd...I love this place...I just told my husband, I'll be living at the computer for a while!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:13:44 PM)
well just make sure you don't forget him, this happens sometimes

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:14:56 PM)
You're right...I'll really do my best not to forget him...I'm on a mission...my son was diagnosed 4 yrs. ago...and I am soooo uninformed...I feel really dumb...

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:16:02 PM)
make sure he gets involved so he knows what is going on, don't leave him out

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:17:13 PM)
deb sometime tells me thing that I have know clue what she is telling me

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:17:21 PM)
I filled him in on what went on this AM, and when I spoke w/ Debbie afterwards. She gave me some good advice...I do share all the info I get w/ him...he was in denial for quite a while. Sometimws, I think he still is to a degree.

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:17:58 PM)
Same w/ my husband....that's why I really try & keep him up to date.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:18:28 PM)
yes us men are like that but we got to have on open mind or things will get ugly quick

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:19:35 PM)
YOU SAID IT!!! I think it's the 'motherly instinct' thing...when you know there is something wrong/not quite right w/ your child...you'll do whatever it takes to try and make it right...

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:19:45 PM)
we don't really see that good but I try to understand

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:20:02 PM)
THAT FOR SURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:20:37 PM)
WELL DEBBIE IS HOME SO i'LL LET HER TAKE OVER

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:20:39 PM)
Yeah...us MOms....I think we're pretty special people...not that you dads aren't...but...........

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:20:53 PM)
Thanks Woody....great talking w/ you!

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:22:30 PM)
Hey Debbie...how did your confrence call go? I tried calling Dr. Moncrieff...not there, so I left a message for her.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:23:08 PM)
Hi Deb!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:23:27 PM)
Dr Moncrieff said that you had called. The conference call went very well.

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:23:42 PM)
THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH for today...I felt much better after talking w/ you!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:24:09 PM)
Great!!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:24:36 PM)
I felt so bad for you today....you sounded so frustrated and overwhelmed

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:25:00 PM)
I have been pulling Travis' last IEP, going through that, and I am going to start my letter to the school in the AM, and will take it, hopefully later in the day.N

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:25:37 PM)
See, all you had to do was regroup... =)

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:25:37 PM)
Overwhelmed is the right word! Still am...but, w/ you, and everyone here, I know I'll get through it!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:26:16 PM)
the people in the chat are pretty special to me. Sometimes parents dont realize how much you all help me too!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:27:12 PM)
With everything going on today I forgot to send out a message about the chat tonight...oops!!

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:28:03 PM)
That's the way it should be. And I'm glad that you too, get it! You do so much for so many, and 'we' all tend to look to you for help, so it's good to know that it's there for you too. Cause, you have bad days, just the rest of us!

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:28:37 PM)
I thought there was on this AM about it...or was that while we were on the chat?

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:29:16 PM)
oh I have my bad days all the time..I spent last night in tears feeling overwhelmed with the NCAPD and feeling like I'm the wrong person to try and start this. The conference call today made me excited again!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:29:28 PM)
That was while we were in the chat

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:29:49 PM)
I actually have it written on my calender....Tues. nite...9pm chat

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:30:09 PM)
*LOL* the night chat is every week..the morning chat is every other week

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:30:33 PM)
How is it going w/ the NCAPD? Did you look at the office space?

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:30:44 PM)
no..I

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:31:14 PM)
I'm going to look at space tomorrow. For some time I will work out of my home. Right now I just need to see what's available and price it

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:31:29 PM)
OK...I'll be here every Tues nite, and every other Tues am...you got me now!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:31:46 PM)
great! I really did enjoy talking to you today

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:32:26 PM)
How was your son when he got home from school today?

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:32:53 PM)
Again, I thank you. I also called the Healthy Kids ins. ...have to go to Ocala Mon. am...he will probably qualify for a diff. type of ins...still will call SS as well.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:33:44 PM)
Please keep me informed of progress. I"ll be interested to hear what you find out from SS

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:34:30 PM)
He was actually ok. I tried to get info out of him...ALWAYS TOUGH to do! He did say that he finished his work...????? His teacher is calling again inthe AM. Then, tonite doing HW....no problem at all!! I don't know...quieter...not the distractions???

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:34:59 PM)
a quiet environment will make a big difference for our kids

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:35:40 PM)
I'll let you know about SS for sure. Hoping to call in the am...told school I can't be there til noon to volunteer...have some 'things' to take care of.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:36:31 PM)
I know I have to call the school too. They switched my daughter's teacher at the last minute. I'm just curious why. I also want to know when we are going to do the 504 Plan and other questions.

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:36:47 PM)
I wrote his teacher a(nother) note...she really is trying to accomodate his needs, and help him as much as she can.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:37:26 PM)
I've had wonderful support from teachers..They have been great.....It's the administrators I usually have conflict with

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:38:27 PM)
? for you....now, at the end of the year, I thought I had a paper for THIS school year, and an IEP....didn't find one. Now, do I need to request a meeting, what to do?

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:39:38 PM)
you thought you already had an IEP written? If so, it should be in his folder and that can be pulled for you

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:41:14 PM)
Hmmmmmm....I just saw his folder yesterday, don't remember seeing the IEP...in NYS you always had a meeting at the end of the school year, for the following yr....so it would already be in place. I'll double check.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:41:52 PM)
Your school guidance counselor should be able to pull his file and look for you. That's their job

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:42:33 PM)
I'll call Dawn in the AM to check before I go in. If there isn't one there...then what?

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:42:48 PM)
Did you have an IEP last year?

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:43:02 PM)
Yes, I just read it before I got on.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:43:22 PM)
Then request a meeting to write a new one

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:44:27 PM)
Ok....oh....and I REALLY thought I was on top of things! I made phone calls over the summer to make sure things would be in place for him.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:44:52 PM)
You probably have one in place....Just check with the school...

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:45:01 PM)
Will do!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:45:11 PM)
I'm trying to get myself organized..I'm sitting here putting together a new day planner *LOL*

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:46:07 PM)
And how full is it?!?!?! You probably need 2 pages for each day...if you're like me!! I'm a BIG note taker....I'd be lost w/out them!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:46:51 PM)
I use to live by my day planner when I had a home based business. I put it away a few years ago. I think Woody cringed when I pulled it back out again!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:47:11 PM)
Bless Woody's heart...he's a patient man...*LOL* =)

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:47:56 PM)
Hey, if it keeps you organized and sane, I say go for it! Woody seems like a really nice man. You're re-newing your vows I hear in Nov....that's so neat!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:48:55 PM)
yeah we are...I can honestly say I love him more today than the day I married him..He's been so supportive and understanding about the time I put into the chat and NCAPD

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:49:17 PM)
let's just say it keeps me organized....think i'm past the sane part

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:50:04 PM)
He sounds like my husband Stan. I told him right b4 I got on, that I will probably be living at the computer for a good while! But, he understands, and is totally supportive.

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:50:44 PM)
I agree w/ you on the sane part..I hink mine got up and left a good while ago!*LOL*

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:51:03 PM)
That is so important. I use to work on Tuesday nights so Woody volunteered to pick up the chats for me.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:51:09 PM)
*LOL*

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:51:55 PM)
If there is ANYTHING I can do to help you w/ the NCAPD, PLEASE let me know! I'd love to help if I can.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:53:44 PM)
I"m sure at one point there will be plenty for everyone to do. Right now though, I have to get the bylaws done and some other organizational things. Once we start working on specific programs then volunteers will be needed.

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:54:09 PM)
Just let me know when...I'll be there o help!

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:54:23 PM)
ooop..to help!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:54:34 PM)
dont worry I never forget when someone volunteers to help! *LOL*

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:54:54 PM)
Do you work outside the home? (if you dont mind me asking)

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:55:39 PM)
You sound like my mother!!*LOL* She says the same thing ...my Dad has MS, and they started an MS support group in The Villages, where they live...she loves volunteers!!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:56:51 PM)
I think parent involvement is going to be the motivating factor that will make the NCAPD succeed and thrive.

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:56:54 PM)
I have a photography thing I do...I take pics of homes being built from the sand up to the finished product. My time, my day...flexability....

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:57:30 PM)
That sounds cool....

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:57:59 PM)
Absolutely!!! And once people know it's there...THEY too shall come...it will be a blessing, and I know it will fly!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:58:30 PM)
I know the support will be there..I just cross my fingers and pray the funding will be *L*

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:58:55 PM)
It is...I enjot it. Slow right now though! UG!! Do you work outside the home? Hmmmmmdoes she have the time I wonder?!?!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 9:59:35 PM)
Yes I do work outside the home...I work full time nights...thurs to sun 1:30 pm to 12:30 am

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 9:59:40 PM)
The funding will come through....I know it will.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:00:49 PM)
I have faith that it will somehow too...

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:01:01 PM)
And you have time for all of this too? You are an amazing woman...I commend and applaud you. I used to work nites...I'm a baker by trade, and would work 4:30 til whenever...sometimes 2am....

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:01:56 PM)
not amazing...goes back to that sanity issue *L*

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:02:23 PM)
*LOL*....you're great!!!!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:02:54 PM)
I'm one of those people who is better off to stay busy or I get mischievious and in trouble.....(I'm a very spirited red head)

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:03:52 PM)
AAAAHHHHHHHHH.....I used to be a red head....just like Lucille Ball....I'm a collector. LOVED my red hair!!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:04:34 PM)
*LOL* Well I"m not quite as crazy as Lucille Ball

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:05:26 PM)
I've been compared....getting married help to settle me down!! We sound like one in the same!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:05:58 PM)
yes we do....perhaps living so close ..one days our paths will cross........

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:06:31 PM)
I've been working with Dr J on here for about 8 months now......I really hope to meet him sometime soon...

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:06:35 PM)
That would be really nice...I hope we do cross paths.

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:07:15 PM)
Where exactly is he from? Here?

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:07:26 PM)
He is a great inspiration to me. He is so intelligent.....Talking to him and Dr Moncrieff today at the same time was so interesting....I just sat and listened.

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:07:50 PM)
I was very impressed this am...seems very knowledgeable...

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:07:57 PM)
He is from the Washington DC area...He is a professor at Galludet University....We met online through the listserv

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:08:18 PM)
Originally I believe he is from the New York City area

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:08:40 PM)
at least that is where I think he went to school

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:09:01 PM)
I think that it's wonderful that he takes the time 2x a month to do the chat. Great guy for doing that, and helping so many people.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:09:56 PM)
He is involved in so many things at one time..I have no idea how he manages....He's incredible...He's taught me so much about APD's.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:10:32 PM)
He's so intelligent,,but yet he never talks above a parent....if you know what I mean

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:11:22 PM)
Hopefully, I'll have lots more ???'s for him the 29th. I'm sure I will! Yes, I know what you mean. And you don't find too many Dr.s like that. He talks to you, so you can understand....

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:12:08 PM)
Soon I'd like to start arranging professionals again for the evening chats.. I want to wait til school is underway for most of the parents

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:12:58 PM)
That's a great idea. I saw that Dr. Debbie was on in June? I think....so sorry I didn't know about this place then.

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:13:28 PM)
Couldn't remember the spelling of her last name...sorry!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:13:36 PM)
Yes, she hosted a chat back in June. You may want to read some archives.

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:13:59 PM)
I'm going to...I read 2 the other night.

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:19:03 PM)
Just moved from upstate NY....it sure is different down here!

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:19:17 PM)
deb: oh, yeah... a different country, in terms of culture!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:19:17 PM)
where at Deb? I have family in Watkins Glen area

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:19:19 PM)
is that good or bad?!

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:20:10 PM)
tammy: just different. the south is more patient (at least in public) but less open.

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:20:20 PM)
NO WAY????!!!! Ithaca...20 min. away!!! We used to have a cottage on Seneca! My grandparents lived on Seneca til thry passed away a few yrs ago!!

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:20:39 PM)
tammy: the north is less patient, but you're more likely to hear someone tell you their honest opinion about things.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:21:07 PM)
*LOL* my family is actually in Dundee and Penn Yann, but most people have never heard of those towns

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:21:25 PM)
<--- has lived in the south 20 years. was in wisconsin before that

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:21:38 PM)
I have!!! Have been to both places...many times over!

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:21:47 PM)
debbie: i know where dundee is there... made an emergency plane landing there many years ago

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:21:56 PM)
i actually grew up in ohio...

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:22:27 PM)
*LOL* it's a small world around here....

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:22:32 PM)
Small, small world!! Everyone always seems to have some kind of connection...

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:23:01 PM)
Tammy and I actually met in here in the chat one night. I was so excited when I learned she was from Jacksonville.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:23:12 PM)
Tammy how long are you going to wait before you call Bill P?

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:23:47 PM)
Just as I was when I founf out today that you, and now Tammy, are so close!

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:23:56 PM)
debbie, cj goes back to dr moncrief this saturday...she diagnosed a mild sensori neural hearing loss this summer...she wants to do some more testing to see if a hearing aid would help him.

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:24:21 PM)
tammy: go for it!!

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:24:31 PM)
i called his office yesterday...i didn't get to talk to him but his secretary told me that all the kids should have their units before the week is out.

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:24:53 PM)
tammy: you know that an audiologically "mild" loss is a very big deal in terms of how it affects communication, right?

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:25:17 PM)
i know...but what exactly is "mild"?

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:25:23 PM)
Great! I wanted to call so bad, but I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:25:41 PM)
"mild" is 20-40 dB "average pure tone loss"

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:26:10 PM)
okay, i know i sound dense but what does that mean in english?

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:26:10 PM)
Dr Moncrieff and I mentioned you on the phone today. I"ve referred Deb to Dr Moncrieff also.

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:26:14 PM)
the pure tone average is basically the average of 500, 1000, & 2000 Hz thresholds... but there are exceptions

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:26:40 PM)
tammy: you mean in terms of practical impact?

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:26:55 PM)
yes

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:26:56 PM)
I hope I hear from her...I'd really like to get Travis in to see her.

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:27:20 PM)
depending on where the losses are the greatest, it means that a lot of normal speech sounds are only partly audible

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:27:45 PM)
she's been great with us and cj really likes her!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:27:47 PM)
Deb I"m sure you will hear from her. I asked her today if she heard from you. She knows that I referred you.

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:28:16 PM)
Thanks Debbie! You are awesome!

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:28:29 PM)
tammy: sounds like f, s, soft th, p, h, g, k z, v, ch, sh, j, m, d, b i

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:29:19 PM)
tammy: it may mean he simply doesn't hear the phone or doorbell ring

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:29:34 PM)
the timing was just right deb since I knew we were going to talk today. We were joking about the debbie club

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:29:52 PM)
he has trouble with most of those, actually with all of those to some extent. is that bad?

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:30:15 PM)
Too funny! I had actually said something on the message I left about the 3 Debbies!

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:31:04 PM)
tammy: a hearing aid will make a lot of difference then. should greatly improve the audibility of all those sounds

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:31:12 PM)
Deb *LOL*

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:31:34 PM)
Debbie...me too*LOL*

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:31:36 PM)
Tammy will you email me and let me know when you get the FM? and I'll let you know also

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:32:25 PM)
sure!!

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:32:55 PM)
cj was disappointed he didn't get it today.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:33:37 PM)
Sarah is just so excited to be back in school again!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:33:49 PM)
Tammy..he was just after the phone numbers *LOL*

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:34:15 PM)
I wish Travis was excited....struggling...hope the FM will help.

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:34:51 PM)
cameron, my 5 year old, was really excited to start kindergarten. cj wanted to see his friends but was/is not looking forward to the work...

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:35:27 PM)
Tammy...sounds familiar...except the friends part...new school.

Deb (ID=52) (Aug 15, 2000 10:35:54 PM)
I'll be back...just got an IM from a friend up North.

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:37:01 PM)
tammy: it must be incredibly frustrating for your son: so many words will sound alike to him. he probably thinks distinctions like man, pan, fan, can, are totally arbitrary.

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:37:29 PM)
i already had a conference with cj's teacher this morning. she seems really willing to do whatever will help him. she knows of his problems from last year and put his chair between two of her "helper" students (students that like to help the other children and aren't mean about it). the biggest problem is that there are 27 students in his class this year...i'm afraid he will get lost in the shuffle...

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:38:22 PM)
usually he does. we usually have to repeat things two or three times before he "gets" what we're saying.

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:38:25 PM)
I haven't met Sarah's teacher yet. I"m going to the school tomorow.

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:38:47 PM)
tammy: be sure his hearing aid has a telecoil & a DAI connector: that is the standard for children's hearing aids anyway

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:39:05 PM)
tammy: he may need to use an FM system AND the hearing aids to succeed in class.

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:39:28 PM)
tammy: there are 2 special couplers that are used to make the FM work with the hearing aids if you have a beltpack receiver

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:39:58 PM)
tammy: there are also combination hearing aids + built in FM. They have a short antenna on them. Look rather futuristic

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:40:21 PM)
tammy: the FM + hearing aids are available from 4 manufacturers.

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:40:50 PM)
tammy: phonic ear, telex, and avr sonovation's products are likely to be cheaper than phonak's microlink product

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:41:00 PM)
would he wear the fm+ all the time or just in class?

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:41:05 PM)
both phonic ear & telex products come in a color choice

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:41:15 PM)
If I am a bit distracted please forgive me...I'm also talking privately with an audioligst I know.....

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:41:25 PM)
tammy: he could wear the fm all the time if it was built in

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:41:47 PM)
tammy: the phonic ear has a removeable FM antenna

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:42:44 PM)
tammy: it would be likely he'll need the hearing aid function full time, since it seems he's having trouble following conversations at home as well as at school. he probably won't need to use the fm function at home, tho'

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:43:52 PM)
any idea what hearing aids cost?

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:45:08 PM)
tammy: you'd be looking at about $1000 to $1800 each, depending on the manufacturer

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:45:26 PM)
tammy: telex may be cheaper... the phonic ear sprite w/the built in fm is $1500 each

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:46:01 PM)
tammy: if he needs the fm anyway, that might be the way to go as it is about the cost of many aids WITHOUT fm... an d then no beltpack

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:46:31 PM)
tammy: virtually everyone who sells these things knows what a financial impact it is on your budget, and will have time payment plans

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:46:41 PM)
tammy: kids on medicaid can get hearing aids for free

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:46:56 PM)
tammy: your insurance plan may cover part of the cost of a hearing aid, but don't count on it

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:47:08 PM)
Tammy and Marge I am going to have to excuse myself..Im getting really sleepy. Tammy I will look forward to hearing from you about the FM

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:47:21 PM)
no they won't cover any of the cost...i've already asked them about it...

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:47:41 PM)
tammy: hearing aids are considered durable medical goods... if your insurance covers durable medical goods, then hearing aids are covered

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:48:07 PM)
tammy: sigh! looks like payments over time then for you.... i had to do that too.

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:48:13 PM)
good night debbie...i better be going too...have to get up early to get the kids ready for school.

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:48:39 PM)
gnite!

debbie (ID=53) (Aug 15, 2000 10:48:47 PM)
goodnight ladies

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:48:48 PM)
yeah, i have to go too

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:49:21 PM)
now see, i don't understand then because they do cover durable medical goods (at least some of them) but they don't cover the hearing aids. well anyway, good night, i'll talk to you later.

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:49:28 PM)
tammy: feel free to email me privately if you have questions about hearing aids... i am studying to be a hearing aid dispenser... it's as close as I can get to audiology without abandoning my family

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:49:34 PM)
to study, i mean

Marge (ID=55) (Aug 15, 2000 10:49:45 PM)
ok, gnite!

Tammy. (ID=54) (Aug 15, 2000 10:50:19 PM)
thanks marge, i appreciate that. good night...
