Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 8:57:30 PM)
I'm here - Hi Deb. This is my first time chatting here! I'm excited!

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 8:57:36 PM)
Hi Kelly...you were here last week, right?

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 8:57:55 PM)
Oh, there was another Kelly here last week...

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 8:58:13 PM)
Do you have a child with CAPD?

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 8:58:51 PM)
No. I've just discovered all kinds of sites on CAPDs within the last week. I do have a daughter who I know has an APD, but the hospital wouldn't diagnose her because she was 4 at the time. She's 5 now.

Hey ya Debbie...how are you?!

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:00:21 PM)

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:00:32 PM)
FastForward?

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:00:58 PM)
Deb..I am doing fine..been working on here since early early this morning so I'm tired tonight!

FLMOM (ID=39) (Sep 12, 2000 9:01:13 PM)
Hi Debbie

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 9:01:24 PM)
Make it an early evening...I know I will have to.

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:01:43 PM)
Does anyone have experience with FFwd?

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:01:44 PM)
Peggy there is no one best type of remeadiation...it will depend on what form of CAPD your child has....what is leading to the processing problem

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:01:58 PM)
Peggy I used FFW for my daughter and it was beneficial for us

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:02:08 PM)
hey FL MOM....is this Carol?

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:02:38 PM)
Oh... I guess I'll have to try it... Did you use FFwd at home or at an office/school?

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:03:07 PM)
I did FFW at home with my daughter....the slp and I discussed it and she felt as if we'd do ok at home

FLMOM (ID=39) (Sep 12, 2000 9:03:17 PM)
Yes it is, sorry I should have said

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:03:30 PM)
My son's school has Earobics... We just had and IEP meeting last week and he is in part-time learning support.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:03:39 PM)
I just kind of guessed.....I"ve pretty much been on here since I talked to you this morning!!

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:03:51 PM)
Peggy..where are you from?

FLMOM (ID=39) (Sep 12, 2000 9:04:05 PM)

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 9:04:33 PM)

FLMOM (ID=39) (Sep 12, 2000 9:04:55 PM)

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:04:57 PM)
If you all haven't been to the new website at www.ncapd.org please visit and let me know what you think!

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:05:12 PM)
What grade is your child in Peggy?

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:05:37 PM)
I called Maxine Young, a therapist about the FFwd program. It is very expensive thought. My son is starting 2nd grade. Behind in reading.

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 9:05:42 PM)
I just saw....how is it going? I've not been home for the last 3 day. I will check out the site tomorrow!YIPPIE!!!

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:06:24 PM)
Maxine Young has an excellent reputation. She is very knowledgable on CAPD

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:07:25 PM)
It's going ok Deb....one day at a time!

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:08:03 PM)
I am at work right now, I work nights at TVGuide as a support analyst, so I have to switch back and forth now and then with the chat... Your site is excellent!!! I hope to help my son eliminate his problems!!! I appriciate any help and am thankful.

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:08:39 PM)
Is there anyway to help lower the cost of the program?

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 9:08:54 PM)
Debbie...I PROMISE you, I will e-mail you about what you want me to do. Life has been crazy the last week!

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:08:58 PM)
Thank you Peggy. I normally work nights too...I'm off tonight. Peggy what site did you enter through? The CAPD: From the Heart or the NCAPD?

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:09:22 PM)
Deb....I understand....dont worry about it! *LOL* I do understand stress.....=)

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:09:44 PM)
Some schools offer the program, but I am not sure if I can convince my school district to adopt FFwd. I used both CAPD and NCAPD.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:09:48 PM)
hi tracy..how are you tonight?

tracy (ID=40) (Sep 12, 2000 9:10:18 PM)
Hello to everybody. How is everything with you all?

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:10:28 PM)
Peggy,,,my school did not help with the cost of FFW at all..but im happy that we did it!

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 9:10:36 PM)
Hi Tracy and KAL/MASS...

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:10:59 PM)
I was hoping to get some info on how to address auditory overstimulation.....

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:11:04 PM)
*clapping hands and applauding that Kal is here* =)

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 9:11:23 PM)
Tracy...how was school on Mon.? Kick butt?

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:11:39 PM)
Tracy...I'm doing great tonight. You?

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:12:11 PM)
Debbie, How'd you get such a cute icon??

tracy (ID=40) (Sep 12, 2000 9:12:30 PM)
Yeah, they tried to CYA all the way. I am doing fine. I am also very fustrated with the school.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:12:38 PM)
KAL...click on settings...then you can choose one too!

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:12:50 PM)
This can be fun!

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 9:13:24 PM)
Tracy...I bet they did!! You just keep plugging away...they won't get rid of you!

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:13:37 PM)
KAL....I've not worked with auditory overstimulation personally...what i've heard recommended is starting with a small amout of stimuli and gradually increasing over time....check with an aud for recommendations though

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:13:38 PM)
Debbie, Did the FFWD really help your son with processing?

tracy (ID=40) (Sep 12, 2000 9:13:47 PM)
I send in a letter regarding mod/rec for her in helping with the CAPD. They tell me that the report has to know be evaluated. They do not want the fm system it cost to much money.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:13:48 PM)
hi Jill! Good to see you tonight!

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:14:48 PM)
Peggy...yes FFW did help Sarah....we did FFW at the same time we started using an FM Easy Listener....I think it was the combination of the two..we are seeing progress literally daily ..I have no regrets about FFW at all and am very happy we did it.

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:14:51 PM)
Hey does anyone have Sensory issues too? I'm confused how it all ties in with the APD piece.

tracy (ID=40) (Sep 12, 2000 9:15:00 PM)
They tell also stated that they want to see how she does. Meaning see if she fails first. Then come to her rescue. Like super heros.

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 9:15:20 PM)
Tracy....Any news from Radio Shack? So, they still don't want her to succeed, eh? I feel so bad for you Tracy...sounds as though your school system stinks.

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:15:28 PM)
I hate the REACTIVE stance schools have. We all need to be more proactive!

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:15:34 PM)
Tracy I was originally told the same thing by my distrcit...seems kind of backward to me

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:15:41 PM)
Thank you! :)

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 9:16:01 PM)
Cool icon KAL!!

FLMOM (ID=39) (Sep 12, 2000 9:16:04 PM)
My daughter has had to fail the first semester of every school year before I can get any type of help

tracy (ID=40) (Sep 12, 2000 9:16:31 PM)
Oh for the system in radio shack that also has to be approved as well. Because according to our county any mod/rec that is not by their authorization has to be approved as well.

JILL (ID=42) (Sep 12, 2000 9:16:32 PM)
HI, I have a 5.9 yr old boy with capd & it seems they will wait for him to fail before giving him any help

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:16:46 PM)
Kind of a self portrait! My daughter came in from EI and they've already tried to take away supports. She's doing great they say. Yeah, BECAUSE of the supports!

FLMOM (ID=39) (Sep 12, 2000 9:17:22 PM)
My daughter is 16 and I don't think the next two years are going to be any different from the last 10

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 9:17:32 PM)
FLMOM....that is SOOOO wrong of the schools!! It just blows me away to think they would rather have a child fail, than to do what needs to be done to help these wonderful children.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:17:43 PM)
for those in Florida.....Dr Moncrieff and Dr Rosenberg (I hope that name is correct) are suppose to be presenting together at a conference here in florida very shortly on CAPD....i wish i had all the info on the conference...

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:18:09 PM)
Unfortunately folks, when it comes to failure it what bases the decision to intervene. Welcome to American Public Schools!

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:18:23 PM)
Does anyone know if Earobics helps as much as FastForward?

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:18:28 PM)

Deb..I promise I will...I have to call dr moncrieff tomorrow..i'll ask her.

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:19:27 PM)

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:19:34 PM)
hey DTmom...is this David's mom?

JILL (ID=42) (Sep 12, 2000 9:19:38 PM)

hi mlmom how are you tonight?

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:20:27 PM)
Why? To help some how?

tracy (ID=40) (Sep 12, 2000 9:20:39 PM)
Oh and another thing she tells me. Well with the fm system or the other system. She is going to pick up outside noises and that is what not good for her. I said no do you know anything about CAPD and the Fm System. She looks at me with this dump stare. I told her thats not what the system does. RRRRRRR

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:20:40 PM)
I did check out the demo... It looks good. I am going to get the school to use that with my son and hopefully start FastForward in January, if not sooner.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:20:50 PM)
ok DTmom....welcome! happy you could join us tonight!

I missed what you said Tracy........=(

mlmom (ID=45) (Sep 12, 2000 9:21:21 PM)

I'm doing great tonight! It's good to see so many people back in the chat tonight!

tracy (ID=40) (Sep 12, 2000 9:21:47 PM)
I did purchase the earobics very good system for the children.

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:21:48 PM)
Jill, could you explain more about Earobic and how it helped your son?

JILL (ID=42) (Sep 12, 2000 9:22:04 PM)
reconizing different sounds, rhyming (which I thought was difficult) listening to the sequence of sounds and repeating them with no visual prompts.

Josiane (ID=43) (Sep 12, 2000 9:22:19 PM)
Debbie, did you get my Email a few days ago?

DTmom (ID=44) (Sep 12, 2000 9:22:23 PM)
brb need to take care of my daughter

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:22:27 PM)
Hi guys, I'm back. I was interrupted by a phone call.

JILL (ID=42) (Sep 12, 2000 9:22:28 PM)
I'm a slow typer

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:22:54 PM)
Oh...what's the age recommendation on Earobics? Do they need to know alphabet and stuff yet? My daughter is 4

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:22:54 PM)
I got an email from you late last night..I found it at 5:30 this morning!

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:23:04 PM)
welcome back Kelly.....

tracy (ID=40) (Sep 12, 2000 9:23:11 PM)
Oh, I was saying that the sp ed teacher tells me that the fm system would not help her because she is going to pick up outside noises than her teachers voice. I said no. Do you know anything about this because if you do you would know that is totally incorrect.

hi B welcome to the chat tonight!

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 9:24:13 PM)
I can't believe the people you have to deal with Tracy...what did I call them last week?!?!

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:24:20 PM)
I wonder the same thing as KAL about the age on Earobics. My daughter is 5, and I don't know if she should be rhyming yet or should she know what the long a sound is? I'm not sure on that either. KAL - you are the one who has been emailing the useful websites to me, right? Your daughter has sensory issues as well, right?

tracy (ID=40) (Sep 12, 2000 9:24:31 PM)
They are morons.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:24:39 PM)
****Just for general info........Now that school is back in full swing, I will be contacting professionals again to host chats. If you have recommendations, please email me at ncapd@aol.com*******

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:24:49 PM)
YES! Auditory overstimulation big time!

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 9:24:59 PM)
Ohhhhhhhhhhh yeah...that's what we said?!?!

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:25:06 PM)
I'm the Si guru on the APD list now, I think.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:25:07 PM)
Tracy...are you here in FL too?

JILL (ID=42) (Sep 12, 2000 9:25:38 PM)
I am still waiting for the program to introduce backround noise. I guess as he progresses that will happen. Although there is plenty of backround noise at home.

tracy (ID=40) (Sep 12, 2000 9:25:41 PM)
The school is more concern about nothing then doing anything. Not yet. I am suppose to move in October. Did not tell her school here yet.

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:25:55 PM)
Debbie - how bout Dr Bellis since we weren't able to clone her last week! Hee Hee

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 9:26:16 PM)
Debbie...Tracy and I were on last week until 12:15 AM!! Did a lot of venting, huh Tracy?!?!

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:26:21 PM)
As for background noise at home, we use headphones. Is that NOT recommeneded with Earobics??

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:26:27 PM)
I can contact Dr Bellis.... She was a delight to have in the chat back in May!

tracy (ID=40) (Sep 12, 2000 9:26:53 PM)
What makes this even more fustrating is that I work for the school. She tells me oh I do not know how to get in touch with you. This school is suppose to be one of the best in our state.

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 9:26:55 PM)
Good Tracy, DON"T tell them...can you only imagine what they WOULDN'T do then?

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:26:57 PM)
that's right Deb. I'm sorry..sometimes I get a bit overloading myself and forget things!

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:26:57 PM)
KAL - my daughter has had that in the past too. Places like the circus and loud places where birthday parties are held - she freaked out. She's ok with it now though - it seems to come and go. AlI the sensory integration therapy has really helped her. Keep up the therapy - I'm sure it will help. I'm curious like you though about the techniques for auditory overstimulation - what do you do? I have a 2 year old who exhibits this BIG TIME. It's getting worse with time. She's TERRIFIED of loud noises - I can't vacuum with her in the house.

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:27:22 PM)
Dr Bellis seems to have a Sensory Approach to APD and I'd be curious about her thoughts.

Josiane (ID=43) (Sep 12, 2000 9:27:39 PM)
Oh! I send it to you at Decwlove.. I thought if I send it at capd from the heart everyone would get it also.... Just letting you know what was going on.....

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:28:22 PM)
Josiane...I"ll check it tonight....if you send to capdfromtheheart and not to the email list, i'll be the only one to get it.....=)

JILL (ID=42) (Sep 12, 2000 9:28:43 PM)
Fom what my son's SLP said, it is designed to be an auditory trainer. It encouages him to LISTEN and focus on the speaker.

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:29:12 PM)
Kelly -We don't have issues at home excet for too many people talking at once. We are a family of 5. But, at school, the bathroom espcially, she says it's hard. She tells me her brain hurts. :( Breaks my heart.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:29:29 PM)
Dr Bellis has a categorical approach to capd that is very interesting. She believes that kids with this disorder can be broken down into different categories (some may overlap) and that remeadiation can be approached according to the category.

Deb (ID=35) (Sep 12, 2000 9:30:32 PM)
KAL...my son tells me the same thing..'my brain hurts'...usually when he is about over doing his homework...makes me so sad.

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:30:49 PM)
Debbie, yes that's what I like about her?? She is very open minded it seems. I can't get many people to see BOTH the Si issues as well as the APD issues. I believe my daughter's SI issues are causing her APD issues!

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:31:12 PM)
AWWW - that is very sad. I sure hope she gets better. At least she can verbalize it and tell you how it makes her feel too. My daughter can't really do that - I ask her all kinds of questions about school and how she's doing and how she feels, and she just can't tell me. I was just on the phone with her teacher, and she was telling me how she was embarrassed this morning because she had an accident in front of her class and she cried. She wouldn't tell me about it though - I asked her, and all she would say is "Wet panties".

JILL (ID=42) (Sep 12, 2000 9:31:21 PM)
my son can't sit at the lunch table in the cafeteria. He told me he just has no idea what the boys are talking about. That kills me, I am afraid that he will isolate himself.

tracy (ID=40) (Sep 12, 2000 9:31:44 PM)
My daughter says the same thing. It does make you sad.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:31:57 PM)
Jill I started having Sarah use the FM trainer due to problems in background discrimination.......now we are showing she no longer is having trouble in that area..but she still uses the FM so she dont have to strain as hard...I wondered whether or not to have her use it til this morning....................(next post)

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:32:29 PM)
My daughter is already isolating herself and the school isn't concerned. She is in the corner playing by herself during all free play periods and they think that's just dandy. UGH!

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:33:33 PM)
Oh my gosh -that's horrible! Have you talked to them about that? Are they encouraging her to interact with the other kids?

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:33:39 PM)
when Sarah was getting ready for school she looked at me out of the blue and commented on how much she likes her FM trainer. She only uses it at school She said Sunday night she was having a hard time understanding the teacher at church and she wished she had it with her..so she got up and went to the teacher and told her that she couldnt "hear" her right so she needed to sit closer...She can really tell the difference!

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:33:48 PM)
My daughter can verbalize NOW. I have had to learn about her issues and the SI and be on the "lookout" for her. I have been trying to teach her how to tell me what's bothering her. It's taken almost a year to be honest. Keep plugging away at it!

mlmom (ID=45) (Sep 12, 2000 9:35:07 PM)
I have to go. Good night everyone.

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:35:09 PM)
Yes. She has a social goal but they aren't too thrilled about it. We have begun Theraputic Play with an outside Psychologist. I just had a TEAM meeting today where the school agreed to consultaion services with her! YEAH! I've had to get outside evals up the wazoo to get the school to pay attention.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:35:14 PM)
goodnight mlmom!!

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:35:15 PM)
Hi, Debbie, Do you have info regarding FM trainers on the web site?

JILL (ID=42) (Sep 12, 2000 9:35:49 PM)
My son's school will not give him an FM system this year. But he is in a classroom that had another CAPD child in it 2 yrs ago. It has carpet and the acoustics are not bad at all. His teacher is also very much into noise CONTROL. I'm so glad...

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 9:35:52 PM)

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:35:53 PM)
I got an email today with some info in it about FM trainers..there is a bit of info on the CAPD:From the Heart site about assitive listening devices..

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:35:57 PM)
Josiane - nice icon!

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:36:03 PM)
hi Debb..........

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:36:18 PM)
How do you teach her that? Doesn't that have to be done through therapy? When I am trying to get info out of her, I give her all the cues I can - I use what info I already know to try and get her started, but she can't ever fully tell me what's happened or how she feels. She either doesn't understand what I'm saying, or she can't put together the words to reply to me. I just don't know. That's why I'm desperate to get an audiologist to diagnose her and get her the right therapy.

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 9:36:35 PM)
ooops...hit a wrong button...just me...Deb

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:36:48 PM)
Thanks, I'll look into the site, I don't know much about them... thanks.

My e-mail address is mccaughern@yahoo.com Thanks Debbie :)

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:38:50 PM)
Kelly, It has taken me a year of observing, and keeping track of what, when and where she has meltdowns. It's really been mostly because of her language growth though. CAPD is a receptive language delay and I believe the expressive language suffers as a direct result. A person cannot express that which they do not understand!

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:39:16 PM)
Kelly - keep up with the SLP intervention. It WILL help if you've got the right goals and objectives.

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:39:45 PM)
I've had to almost pry it out of her. Some days it feels like getting water from a stone.

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 9:39:45 PM)
Tracy..where is it again in FL you are moving to?

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 9:40:03 PM)
West Palm Beach area Palm City

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:40:20 PM)
I used to live in Palm City.

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 9:40:33 PM)
Ok...that's right. I think you'll be 5-6 hrs. from me.

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:40:40 PM)
And Jensen Beach. Good Luck!

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 9:41:00 PM)
Maybe closer, I'm terrible with that kind of stuff!

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:41:11 PM)
Yes - I agree. The SLP at our school is in agreement with the audiologist in that she can't be diagnosed with an APD because of her age. I'd like to know what she'd do though if she had a child with this problem - just sit back and wait until she's older and so far behind it would take years to remediate? GIVE ME A BREAK! We're searching for a private SLP who is trained in CAPD. Just curious - does your daughter have an behavior problems as a result of any of this?

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:41:29 PM)
Peggy. I"m goign to have to look for the website...it will be on my site soon!

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 9:41:57 PM)
You are kidding!! This summer was the first time I ever been to Fla. . I like it very much. Currently live in GA original from Philly.

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:42:28 PM)
OK.. No problem... I'll check the site later... Thanks a lot!!! I appriciate your help!!!

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 9:42:36 PM)
I'm in Ocala...and Debbie is in Jacksonville...

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:42:38 PM)
One thing I found out with Sarah is that if I asked her general questions she was unable to answer due to short term memory trouble. If I ask more specific questions..she does much better and does not "overload"

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:42:44 PM)
YES! She is sensory seeker from an SI point of view though. You see distractibility, overstimulation is noisy/loud places, poor attention because of distractibility. Should I go on?

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:43:15 PM)
Yes Debbie. I agree. I have to use the teacher's list of activities and ask SPECIFIC questions about her day!

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:43:22 PM)
Tracy, I'm from Philly suburbs. Lived in Palm City and Jensen for a while, now in West Chester, PA again...

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:43:22 PM)
Debbie - you're right about being specific. That's very important.

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:43:53 PM)
Being specific helps with the literal ascpect of her language too!

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 9:44:05 PM)
I have to be specific w/ my son as well...otherwise, it's : I don't know"...

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:44:16 PM)
Has anyone heard of NACD??? Bob Damen and his programs?

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 9:44:21 PM)
Yeah I am from South Philly. Born and raised. I miss it up there very much. My family is in Philly and NJ.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:44:27 PM)
If i ask Sarah "What did you do in school today?" she looks at me.. If I ask her..."Did you do addition in math?" she can answer

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:44:39 PM)
KAL - does your daughter have any anxiety as a result of this? Ours has a lot of anxiety, and it exhibits itself as a need for control over her environment. It's very difficult to deal with.

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:44:44 PM)
I used to get a few "I don't knows" from my typical kid. But, thats ALL I get from my APD daughter!!!!!!!!!

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 9:45:14 PM)
Debbie...EXACTLY...Travis is the same way...

JILL (ID=42) (Sep 12, 2000 9:45:18 PM)
Everything is "I don't know"

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 9:45:21 PM)
Same thing here or I get okay.

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:45:27 PM)
YES! Significant anxiety disorder as diagnosed by her Developmental Pediatrician. YES YEs YES! All of the above...

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:45:42 PM)
Are you medicating her because of it?

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:45:53 PM)
I get the same from my son. It is easier for him to say "I don't know" then give a right answer.

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 9:45:59 PM)
I feel so bad when I hear "I don't know"...very sad and frustrating for all concerned.

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 9:46:08 PM)
I have to pull teeth to get a direct answer.

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:46:17 PM)
The Dr told me that her anxiety is a direct result of her SI issues. She doesn't process the world properly and therefore has anxiety about it. She has significant separation anxiety that shows up mostly....

JILL (ID=42) (Sep 12, 2000 9:46:19 PM)
I also get the response "I don't want to talk right now

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:46:20 PM)
I use to think the "I dont know" was just Sarah being stubborn.....

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 9:46:22 PM)
Same here Tracy....

FLMOM (ID=39) (Sep 12, 2000 9:46:34 PM)
I have to go, thanks for the info, very interesting

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:46:52 PM)
She also has OCD issues as a way to try to take control over things she CAN! Does that make sense? That's my take on what the Dr's told us anyways. I hope I have it right.

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:47:09 PM)
Has anyone been to NACD.org? National Org for Child Developement?

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:47:31 PM)
Peggy. im not familiar with them

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 9:47:37 PM)
Peggy...no...is it a good site?

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 9:47:38 PM)
Then I go over the work she brings home and it is like see never even seen it before. I am like hello did you do this today. With a stare she looks at me and says I guess so.

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:48:03 PM)
As for medication - not yet. We are trying to get the SI issues under control first. Then we'll consider an SSRI like Paxil.

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:48:34 PM)
Wow - you have a lot to deal with like us. She has various issues too - PDD, possible ODD, SI issues also, and this. I truly feel with her though that the CAPD is the core of it all. Every time I rationalize her behaviors, it all comes back to the CAPD.

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 9:48:57 PM)
Tracy...Travis is like that too...not as bad as before. I really see some things changing w/ him....and for the better...hope more comes his way=)

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:49:18 PM)
HHMM. Do you have a developmental ped? I HIGHLY recommend them! They have been a life saver for us - especially getting the school to listen.

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:49:21 PM)
Just curious if anyone has been through thier program. It seems like a good site. but I dont know how reliable it is.

Hi Rose.....

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:49:43 PM)
Peggy - what program? I think I misssed something!

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:49:46 PM)
hey Rose...you made it!

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 9:49:51 PM)
Well I finally made it

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:49:52 PM)
No - just a pediatrician, who I really like, but I'm sure a developmental one would be great for us. I'm not sure how to go about getting one.

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 9:50:08 PM)
Oh it is terrible at times. I feel so bad. Because I have to go over and over the information is. I told her teacher that she needs alot of reputation and hands on interaction.

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:50:42 PM)
NACD.ord looks at neurological dysoragnization and it's effects on children

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 9:50:46 PM)
speaking of developmental pediatricians does anyone know if you need a referral to see one if you have an HMO

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:50:47 PM)
Rose how did you get in?

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:50:48 PM)
I asked my Ped to help me piece togther all of the puzzle pieces we were getting from each different Dr. He sent me to the developmental ped. Where are you located?

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:51:01 PM)
We did Paxil - it was wonderful except that she was extremely hyper while on it. It definitely took care of the defiant behavior though. She was even potty trained while on it. I highly recommend it - it's apparently rare that a child become hyper while on it - at least that's what the psychiatrist told us.

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 9:51:02 PM)
Repition is the best thing...I do it at home all the time w/ him...make him repeat things I tell him...

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 9:51:18 PM)

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:51:36 PM)
Yes for HMO referral. At least ours did. We got it from the reg ped. Developmental peds don't deal with medicine like reg peds do!

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:52:16 PM)
ok rose..thanks..i'm trying to help someone else get in

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:52:22 PM)
I'm in Houston, TX

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:53:14 PM)
Hey Debbie - Do you know any SLP's that might be willing to do a chat? It might help some of us with younger CAPDers (oops APDers). Maybe even Dolfrog as a veteran??

Kelly, Oh. I'm in Mass. I was gonna give you a referral!

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 9:53:48 PM)
cool I spoke to the pediatrician about cordinating all of his diagnosis but he just mentioned a hospital not who to see, I figured a developmental pediatricain would be a good start

TracyNZ (ID=50) (Sep 12, 2000 9:54:00 PM)
HI debbie and everyone!

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:54:12 PM)
KAL..im suppose to be contacting an slp..... just haven't had the chance....will work on it!

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 9:54:19 PM)
For all who don't know me my son is 8

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:54:23 PM)
I think developmental peds are excellent. They look at ALL areas of fdevelopment including social, emotional and self help!

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 9:54:28 PM)
Hi TracyNZ.....

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:54:46 PM)
sorry about they typos. I'm kinda tired!

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:54:53 PM)
If anyone has a referral for an aud or slp that has been good to work with..please let me know so I can add them to the referral program on the new site at www.ncapd.org

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:55:14 PM)
love the nose Tracy! *LOL*

TracyNZ (ID=50) (Sep 12, 2000 9:55:33 PM)
Debbie , anyone in New Zealand Audiologist or Speech Path?

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:55:37 PM)
Debbie - I have a few names for you, but I'd have to look them up. They're out of Children's Hospital in Boston

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 9:55:49 PM)
So far diagnosis include ADHD,CAPD,dyslexia, language based LD, fine motor skills problems, visual perception problems, and sensory issues so i hope a developmental pediatrician will help

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:55:52 PM)
Kelly,, if you email me at ncapd@aol.com I'll see if I can hook you up wiht the other mom.

TracyNZ (ID=50) (Sep 12, 2000 9:55:57 PM)
Thanks, debbie, you taught me that trick last time!

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:56:19 PM)
This is for whoever wants to reply. My daughter is 5, and the audiologist we saw to try and get her tested for APD wouldn't do it because of her age. I'm really considering getting a second opinion on it. She was almost 5 at the time of the test (they did an ABR and the PSI test on her, but that was it), and now she is 5. I'm even wondering if that would made a difference. Do you think I should get a second opinion?

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:56:20 PM)
Rose, I think it would! that's a lot for one little kid to deal with.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:56:23 PM)
KAL...the names would be appreciated...please send contact info with the names! thanks much!

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:56:38 PM)
Tracy...I dont have any referrals for new zeland yet...im sorry!

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 9:56:45 PM)
It is and seems the list keeps growing

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:56:51 PM)
Debbie, I'll email you tomorrow on that.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:56:59 PM)
great Kal!

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:58:04 PM)
Kelly...If you do not agree with the first diagnosis for any reason..I'd suggest getting a second opinion...

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:58:29 PM)
Debbie, Does CAPD go along with other processing problems usually?

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:58:36 PM)
Kelly - Well, you' know my stance on that. I live outside Boston and we have TOP notch Audis that will not touch CAPD til age 6. It is my understanding that even this is early compared to some Audis. Butk certainly, if you want a second opinion you should get it. Your peace of mind is worth something.

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 9:58:54 PM)
Wow - Rose, you have a lot on your plate too. We're dealing with all those except for the dyslexia and LD, and we've got PDD too. It's hard, isn't it? It's hard to work on it all with them, isn't it?

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 9:58:56 PM)
Peggy i can't say but for my son it is true

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:59:11 PM)
Peggy....it depends on what the underlying problems are that is causing the CAPD......my daughter has an integration problem and it can lead to some other issues

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 9:59:33 PM)
CAPD can easily be found to contribute to other problems

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 9:59:34 PM)
worse part is he is one of three with disabilities to deal with , my four so far is diagnosis free

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 9:59:36 PM)
Is this all neurologically based?

KAL/Mass (ID=41) (Sep 12, 2000 9:59:43 PM)
Debbie, are your daughter's issues SI based? If so, so are my daughters (I think )

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 10:00:09 PM)
KAL i dont believe they are SI based....but definitely an integration deficit...

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 10:00:10 PM)
Rose, all I can say is there's a place in heaven for you. Bless your heart - I'll keep you in my prayers!

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 10:00:19 PM)
Does anyone know how an iep from one state to another state works. Now that we are moving, I was just wondering.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 10:01:07 PM)
Peggy there are many research studies that point to the idea of capd being related to the neurological system... There is no one known cause as of yet though

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:01:24 PM)
Tracy...Darn...I just read something on that very thing...how to get all your ducks in a row...let me check to see if I have anything...

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 10:01:26 PM)
Rose is an angel from heaven already!! She's been a great friend!!

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 10:01:43 PM)
My oldestson is almost 15 and is ADHD(severe) with an anxiety disorder, 11 year old girl ADD and dyslexia, and of course the long list for the 8 year old

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 10:02:07 PM)
Thank you Debb. I really would appreciate it.

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 10:02:46 PM)
A Neuropsycologist is the one how diagnosed CAPD for my son. I noticed that many other people have speech therapist/audiologist do the diagnosis... What is the norm?

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 10:02:46 PM)
So, if a child can't be diagnosed with an APD until at least 6, what are you supposed to do in the meantime? Isn't there therapy geared for APDs that can be used on 4 and 5 year olds?

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 10:02:55 PM)
At one time over the summer there was discussion about going through an online training manual on IEP's. Since it was summer, chat attendance was low....is any one interested in trying this again?

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 10:03:01 PM)
debbie can I give your e-mail address to a friend who also recently started a non-profit organization? She is looking for information on tax exempt status and I figured you may be in the same spot about now.

TracyNZ (ID=50) (Sep 12, 2000 10:03:12 PM)
Kelly,Good question, I have a 5 y/o

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 10:03:32 PM)
Debbie, IEP training manual sound good to me. I just did an IEP last Thursday...

Kelly, a child below the age of 6 can be tested for APD.. Jeannane Ferre who is a noted audiologist tests kids under the age of 5

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:03:49 PM)
I'm baaaaack. I think I got the boot somehow!

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:04:27 PM)
Kelly, I didn't realize some Audis will test so young. It's unheard of up here

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:04:35 PM)
Tracy...still looking....

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 10:04:43 PM)
Hey guys i got a magazine in the mail with all kinds of programs to help CAPD for all ages. I really don't know how I got it but it seems to be geared towards teachers and I can order from it.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 10:04:51 PM)
It really depends on the audiologist

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:04:53 PM)
Oops. I think I meant that for Debbie.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 10:05:12 PM)
Rose who is the magazine by and how deo i order it?????

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 10:05:22 PM)
Where is Jeannane Ferre? I NEED HER!!!!!!! I hear different things - all I know is if there is ONE audiologist willing to test and dx a child with CAPD, I want that one.

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 10:05:35 PM)
I can't say how I got it but with all the things I fill out I guess I ordered it or something, it looks great.

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 10:05:41 PM)
Jeananne Ferre is in Oak Park, Illinois....

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 10:05:58 PM)
Debb, you can email it to me when you get a change eltrabybi@aol.com

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 10:06:01 PM)
I wish I could find a Jeananne Ferre in Houston!!!!!!!!

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:06:10 PM)
I guess Dr J is the "not till age 6" version? Do they use different tests? I heard that you had to wait for some maturation of the brain or something like that. I rememebr our Audi telling us it would be like taking a newborn baby and asking if they will have developmental delays> One would just have to wait and see..

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 10:06:16 PM)
Rose, I'm interested in that magazine too!

debbie (ID=38) (Sep 12, 2000 10:06:23 PM)
I do have the beginning of the National Referral program up on the new website...Please check it out at www.ncapd.org

TracyNZ (ID=50) (Sep 12, 2000 10:08:37 PM)
Debbie, is there an appropriate place on the site where you could list recommended tests for CAPD? I need to know we are getting the right tests done for our daughter.

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 10:08:45 PM)
I will email it to youhey I just noticed there is a web address http://www.acadcom.com

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:11:04 PM)
Hi Tina....

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 10:11:30 PM)

Debb is your son in 2nd grade or 3rd grade?

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:11:54 PM)
Tracy..he's in 2nd.

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 10:12:11 PM)
mine is in 3rd

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 10:12:53 PM)

Kelly (ID=36) (Sep 12, 2000 10:13:18 PM)
I've got to go - hope to hear from ya'll at the next chat!

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:13:32 PM)
Tracy...I am not finding anything....I think I came accross the moving/IEP info on a site. Yes, but this is his BIGGEST weakness! Yesterday, he did AWFUL, today, he did great!!

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 10:13:41 PM)
I can tell you that combination problems can be difficult to solve when one problem often is hard to overcome by traditional remediation methods without interfering with other problems.

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:14:42 PM)
He has problems somethimes just copying the words off the board...he may leave out a word, or switch a few words around...

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 10:15:04 PM)
She does the same thing again has your son. One day good the spelling is a little off then the next day forget it. I look at it like what is this suppose to say.

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 10:15:45 PM)
Be sure to have the child check for visual perception problems especially tracking problems which makes it difficult to copy things or keep their place

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 10:16:06 PM)
Hey, I will have to move near you so that they can go to the same school. Then can help each other.

my son still can't write his last name without reversals of letters

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:16:30 PM)
My Dad has MS, and this same thing will happen to him. Anything neurological...can mean a good minute, a good day..bad minute , bad day...

tina (ID=54) (Sep 12, 2000 10:16:39 PM)
this is my first time here. My son is 11 and has capd. I am in the process of researching a plan for aiding his condition. He does average in school and is not a candidate for any school assistance and I dont know what to do to help him. He scores low on language usage on standardized tests when they are timed. He is a slow reader but comprehends accurately when given an extra 5 minutes and I am trying to decided if trying to get him classified independently would help him excel on standardized tests. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:17:17 PM)
Yeah Tracy...that would be awesome! Plus, the school he is going to, a charter school, really seems to be great.

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 10:17:49 PM)
I am there!!!!! Has to be better than the one I am dealing with.

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:18:13 PM)
Tina, my daugher did not qualify for help on an IEP either. The school did give her a 504 since I kept demanding help. Under the 504 I could get my daughter help for reading.

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:18:25 PM)
Can I come to the Charter school too???!!!!

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 10:18:26 PM)
tina has your son had an evaluation done by the school? If his intelligence indicates he is not working up to HIS potential due to his disability they HAVE to help him. Just because he isn't doing awful doesn't mean they don't have to address his needs.

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:18:30 PM)
Still hasn't gotton his OT yet, she's supposed to be there tomorrow. Then today, I found out his SLP won't be there for the next 2 wks! UG!

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:19:16 PM)
Rose,,,,my daughter had a 50 point spread between verbal and nonverbal IQ and it did not qualify her for help

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:19:36 PM)
Debbie - How did that happen????????????

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:19:58 PM)
Let me guess - she was making "effective progress?"

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:20:16 PM)
KAL....SURE!!!! I really feel blessed he is there. Lots of opportunities he wouldn't have at any other school...horeseback riding (soon)...all kinds of great stuff! Plus, it's in a RETIREMENT community!! We have TONS of volunteers from the retirement community...awesome and very lucky!

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:20:18 PM)
in order to qualify for help they look at the norm...sarah scored an 85 on verbal iq...had to have an 84 to get hlep

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 10:20:26 PM)
I think its all about fighting, I have been fighting the school since Kindergarten and finally winning withthe help of an advocate.

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:20:34 PM)
A/B honor roll at the time...

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:20:57 PM)
Debb - Hippotherapy or just horse back riding for fun?

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:20:58 PM)
on nonverbal iq she had a 135...way above average...

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:21:02 PM)
Debbie - UGH!

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 10:21:06 PM)
It seems like schools can really be a problem!!! The thought my son was ADD. turns out he is CAPD. The just wanted to drug him so he would pay attention in class.

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:21:26 PM)
KAL..that's when i became a parent from hell..*L*

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:21:32 PM)
KAL...reg. horesback riding. But, I am looking into theraputic riding for him.

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:21:44 PM)
We did the ADHD route till someone told me about CAPD and Sensory Integration. We were ready for a trial of Ritalin.

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 10:22:26 PM)
I guess their argument would be her IQ is high and so are her grades, she is able to compensate for verbal deficites well enough to learn so no help needed. Is she behind in reading?

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 10:22:45 PM)
KAL, Did the schools push the ADHD and ritalin?

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:22:58 PM)
KAL...even though Travis is APD, he is on Ritalin...just put him back on, after being off for over a year.

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 10:23:15 PM)
My son has both ADHD and CAPD so it is possible to have both. My son takes Adderall which was much more effective for him than ritalin.

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:23:29 PM)
No. Big issue with me. They told our private Psych that it wasn't ADHD - wrong area to look. They mentioned SI to the therapist and not us. The therapist thought we knew!!!!!!!!

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:24:28 PM)
Yes, I agree Rose. We didn't consider Ritalin because it can cause nervousness and my little one already has enough of that. We;re pursuing SI therapy for now to see how it helps with distractility and attention.

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 10:24:47 PM)
ADHD is usually suggested for children who have behavioral problems that interrupt teachers

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 10:24:56 PM)
Can the school test a child for CAPD? I had her independ. tested and the school is doing an evaluation on it. The evaluation takes anywhere from 45 days to 60 days. Since she is not failling at this point could take longer.

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:25:18 PM)
Bad subject for me. I've become a parent from HEL* too, Debbie! We threatened Dur Process last Spring and low and behold - the school was a little more negotiable!

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:25:21 PM)
tracy....a child should be tested for CAPD by a trained audiologist familiar with CAPD......

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 10:25:29 PM)
Actually my oldest was ADHD with an anxiety disorder and Ritalin worked for him to releive nervousness

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:25:41 PM)
KAL...my school is more negotiable now too....*evil grin*

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:25:42 PM)
Rose, really?

Rose (ID=49) (Sep 12, 2000 10:26:24 PM)
yes he was a wreck without it and worried about everything including where bathrooms were

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 10:26:26 PM)
Debbie, My son was tested by the school who contracted a neurophycologist... Should I have him tested by an audiogist too?

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:26:27 PM)
Debbie - Hee Hee. Funny how the words "Dur Process", "Department of Education" and "lawyer" whip them into shape, huh?

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 10:26:36 PM)
She told me that since we had her tested indep. the school does not have to except this report. That is why they are doing there own report.

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:26:47 PM)
Peggy...was the capd testing done is a sound proof booth?

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:27:07 PM)
tracy..the school MUST take that report into consideration!

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:27:21 PM)
Rose, Hmm. Our anxiety is complex. She's got separation issues, OCD issues and Si issues.

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 10:27:23 PM)
No... Through test by the neuropsyc... Verbal/etc

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:27:42 PM)
KAL, i contacted the state dept of education and take their policy manual on execeptional student education to meetings with me...

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:27:59 PM)
Peggy...I would see an audiologist

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 10:28:02 PM)
His hearing is OK now... He did have a loss when he was younger...it is now fixed by tubes.

KAL/Mass (ID=52) (Sep 12, 2000 10:28:11 PM)
Yes, I do too. I bring it all in a "Federation for Children with Special Needs" tote bag!!!!!!!!

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 10:28:18 PM)
Is Maxine Young a audiologist too?>

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:28:27 PM)
Peggy hearing loss and auditory processing are two different problems!!!!

tracy (ID=48) (Sep 12, 2000 10:28:42 PM)
Oh they took it in consideration all the recommendations, however for the fm system and more one on one they did not consider because it cost money and I have to be approved for this. So basically, until she actually fails they are going to drag there feet.

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:28:45 PM)
Maxine young is an slp i believe..let me check

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:32:46 PM)

Debbie, Thank you I will check it out!

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:33:22 PM)
I would want a diagnosis from an audiologist who is proficient with testing and treating CAPD, not all audiologist are capable of testing

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:33:45 PM)
Peggy if you ask Dr J,..he would say only an aud can test for CAPD. the tests used are designed to be given in a sound booth......i'm not sure what tests a neuro phych would use

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:33:56 PM)
KAL...you go girl! But, that's what you must do...go prepared!

tracy (ID=58) (Sep 12, 2000 10:34:03 PM)

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:34:16 PM)
My son has recently gotten approved for a medical card to back up our insurance and decrease out of pocket costs.

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:34:21 PM)
I"m sorry everyone is having trouble!

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 10:34:24 PM)
I will check into a re-eval... Does insurance cover them usually?mpany

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:34:54 PM)
Yes. We learned the hard way. The school tried to drop all services but speech. We rejected that IEP faster than toast comes out of a toaster!

Josiane (ID=43) (Sep 12, 2000 10:34:58 PM)
Gotta go. Bye all

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:35:17 PM)
Peggy my insurance didn't cover the CAPD testing but it did cover the office visit and preliminary audiological evaluation

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:35:18 PM)
my insurance covered the test..not the therapy.....we'll tell you there is a problem we just wont help you wiht it

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:35:55 PM)
Debbie - sounds like my insurance. BCBS HMo?

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:36:25 PM)
i have two insurance sompanies..not BCBS..but Tricare and a smaller company

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:36:37 PM)
the medical card however has to cover all medical expenses my insurance won't cover so I am planning on getting him re-evaluated at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

Patty (ID=53) (Sep 12, 2000 10:36:41 PM)
My insurance covers the testing, and 8weeks of SLP therapy yearly.

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:37:23 PM)
mine covered 8 weeks of language therapy too, how do they expect 8 weeks to sove a problem?

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:37:38 PM)
solve

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:38:18 PM)
Sarah has never had "language therapy" *LOL*

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:38:30 PM)
I would prefer to have my 8 weeks per year all together and only for one year, seems more productive than stopping and restarting therapy

Patty (ID=53) (Sep 12, 2000 10:38:32 PM)
it doesn't, but they get some therapy in school

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:38:59 PM)
Ha! mine doesn't school says he isn't eligible

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:39:02 PM)
Patty can you extend benefits through a case manager? That

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:39:06 PM)
OOPS

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:39:15 PM)
that's the same thing my school says....it's amazing....

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:39:47 PM)
That's what we do for our OT and Speech. Get the eval and the 60 days and then at then end they submit a treatment plan with recommended extended lenth of service needed.

Patty (ID=53) (Sep 12, 2000 10:40:06 PM)
I don't know about extending benefits

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:40:17 PM)
still fighting this issue with them, they currently have 45 days to complete serveral evaluations, one of which is to determine if they feel he is eligible for an assistive listening device

tracy (ID=58) (Sep 12, 2000 10:40:24 PM)
What does OT stand for?

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:40:37 PM)
occupational thereapist

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:40:41 PM)
Ot =Occupational therapy

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:40:42 PM)
Tracy...occupational therapist

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:40:59 PM)
Looks like were all on the same page with the OT~! Ha hA

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:41:04 PM)
It has already been recommended by the audiologist along with language therapy, yet they get to make their own decision.

tracy (ID=58) (Sep 12, 2000 10:41:11 PM)
Is this done privately or by the school?

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:41:23 PM)
ALL together now...

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:41:46 PM)
Mine is getting an OT eval soon too, been trying to get them to do it and hpefully it will be soon

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:42:02 PM)
Privately and as soon as I get my new IEP (we developed it today!) from the school!!!!!!!

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:42:24 PM)
the school however they may have to pay for an outside ot if they can't handle sensory issues which most schools can't

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:42:27 PM)
Rose, just request it in writing. They have 45 days from then to hold and IEP meeting.

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:43:01 PM)
Rose, I'm lucky. we have an OT/SI room in my daughter's school.

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 10:43:09 PM)
Rose, I'm in Chester County, PA.

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:43:19 PM)
let me tell you my son's school violated more rules than they followed

Patty (ID=59) (Sep 12, 2000 10:43:20 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart)

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:43:35 PM)
Call the DOE (Deapartment of ED)

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:43:46 PM)
They almost died when I showed up with an advocate at our last meeting

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 10:43:49 PM)
What school district? Im in West chester area school district.

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:44:00 PM)
Well, on second though. The DOE can be kinda spineless in my case. Wanna hear a good story?

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:44:20 PM)
Yeah...lets hear it!

tracy (ID=58) (Sep 12, 2000 10:44:23 PM)
Sounds good

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:44:25 PM)
Philadelphia, and it really isn't a district problem but an individual school problem

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:44:32 PM)
let's hear it KAL

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:45:03 PM)
My daughter has had an ill qualified speech "teacher" working with her the last 2 years. Turns out she is NOT certified as an SLP (teacher certificate) AND she is NOT licensesed as a SLP...........

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:45:15 PM)
oh my gosh...has anyone heard what happened in one of our middle schools here in Jacksonville today? I"m sure it

Patty (ID=59) (Sep 12, 2000 10:45:17 PM)
Rose, did the advocate cost you anything?

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:45:24 PM)
it'l make national news

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:45:43 PM)
But, the DOE found that there was NO VIOLATION of Sped laws because she was working on getting her license as she was giving my daughter her therapy. Wanna hear the best part?????

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:45:46 PM)
Debbie...what?

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:46:05 PM)
KAL...go on...

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:46:19 PM)
She was DENIED her license. But no violation of sped laws occured. Forget calling the DOE now that I think about it!!!!!!!!!!!!

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:46:44 PM)
One of the schools has been having trouble with rats in the building..so they put out rat bait....a kid picked it up (12 year old 7th grader) and sprinkled it on the nachos in the cafeteria!!!!!!

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:46:45 PM)
Spineless for sure up here in MAss. But, still a good treat tactic at a TEAM meeting!

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:47:04 PM)
Debbie - what happened??????

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:47:20 PM)
10 kids were taken to the hospital and were treated and released...another 20 0r so were treated at the school....

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:47:27 PM)
KAL>>>NO WAY!!!! That is uterlly (SP?) amazing...how very unfortunate for your child! WRONG...WRONG...WRONG!!!

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:47:39 PM)
Oh my gosh. That's horrible.

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:48:07 PM)
Wow...that is awful Debbie..I hadn't heard anything on the news...has it been on tv?

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:48:13 PM)
it's incredible! that's unreal about your slp KAL

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:48:35 PM)
that's all that was on my tv this afternoon! they have two kids in custody.....

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:49:11 PM)
Im sure our district is trying to keep it hush hush

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:49:13 PM)
AAH - yes, but we got a REAL SLP on the TEAM this year. The "fake" one resigned last week! Gee, could it be because she wasn't qualified to do what she was doing??? Unfortunately, we havent made many friends in the teacher-arena because of it though. But, I hold my head high knowing I did what was right for my daughter! ;)

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:49:28 PM)
that is amazing...thank goodness noone died...BIG trouble then...hopefully, they will still get in big trouble!

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:49:50 PM)
Debbie, yes, someone should be held accountable.

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:50:14 PM)
KAL....That's right...and your daughter comes first..not the fake SLP, or the other teachers...your daughter is #1!!

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:50:32 PM)
Sorry I was e-mailing debbie the catalog information and have to read through recent conversation

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:50:34 PM)
our school only has their slp 3 days a week now...my youngest daughter is to have speech therapy twice a week according to her IEP...this is the 4th week of school and Kendra still hasn't seen the slp yet....i understand rearrange schedules..but for 4 weeks!!

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:50:56 PM)
Yes. We see it as true advocacy for what I believe is best for my daughter. It's not about who's friends with me.

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:51:10 PM)
No the advocate was free. I located her through amicusforchildren you an locate them on the web

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:51:12 PM)
Never will be either. She comes first, always.

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:51:13 PM)
KAL..im to the point that I dont care if the school likes me or not...I"

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:51:18 PM)
Kal...absolutley!!

tracy (ID=58) (Sep 12, 2000 10:51:35 PM)
I second that thought. Hey, I work for the same school were I am consistently raising he**. I know that they would like for me to quit working there.

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:51:45 PM)
I'm not responsible for raising them and making sure they grow up to be productive adults who succeed..that was their mothers job..my obligation is to Sarah

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:52:17 PM)
tracy..i cant imagine working at my daughters school......you are one brave lady!! hats off to you!

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:52:22 PM)
Debbie...very true...

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:52:24 PM)
I don't care either! I just pretend I don't see their daggers coming at me from their glares.

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 10:52:34 PM)
What is the best way to deal with schools??? Sometimes I feel I am a pest because I am trying to get my son some help.

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:52:50 PM)
Well, I think my idea of being a teacher's aid in a few years just went out the window with our DOE complaint about the SLP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tracy (ID=58) (Sep 12, 2000 10:53:08 PM)
It keeps them on their toes. Even though they give me the run around all the time. I just keep after them.

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:53:15 PM)
Peggy!! Do not feel like a pest...squeaky wheels get oiled......YOU are the advocate for your child.

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:53:15 PM)
Be a pest! Trust your gut. If you don't advocate for your son's needs, who will??

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:53:27 PM)
KAL......GO FOR IT still!!!

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:53:42 PM)
I think I'm on one of my soapboxes here!

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:54:20 PM)
Oops. I ,meant to say, the DOE concern about our fake SLP! Hee Hee

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 10:54:22 PM)
Is it good to be involved with the school by volunteering... I do want to be the best advocate for my son.

tracy (ID=58) (Sep 12, 2000 10:54:46 PM)
Oh yeah, her school did a complete evaluation on her and said she only has a speech and language problem. Most like will grow out it. I had her indep. tested and she does have a speech and language problem along with capd.

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:54:52 PM)
Peggy....YES!!! I'm at my sons school 2 days a week.

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:54:54 PM)
Peggy, the majority of the schools will scream they dont have a budget and cant afford to help your child.....the budget is their problem...your child is your responsibillity......The way so many schools decide who get's help is they will deliberately give you the run around since they cant' afford to help everyone..those who scream the loudest get help

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:54:55 PM)
Yes. But, I can't right now. My daughter's separation issues prevent her from progressing with me there. I agree, unfortunately.

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:54:56 PM)
well after complaining about my son's struggles from kindergarten the 1st grade teachers answer was for me to hold him back in 1st grade, when I refused they really gave me a hard time

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:55:31 PM)
Hey guys, it is illegal to discuss money issues at all in a TEAM meeting. Keep documentaion if this is happening.

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:56:05 PM)
according to my school my daughter is perfectly normal..she does not have reading problems...or auditory processing problems....nothing!! but all independent test show just the opposite..go figure

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:56:07 PM)
KAL...thanks...didn't know that.

tracy (ID=58) (Sep 12, 2000 10:56:34 PM)
Well thats all they talk about how poor the county is and how under staff they are and blab blab blab.

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:56:37 PM)
Hey mine too Debbie. Sometimes I wonder why we even have an IEP. They think she's typical!

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 10:56:39 PM)
Thank you Debbie... I am going to do my best at knowing what I can do for my son and make sure he gets the help he needs.

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:56:42 PM)
Schools want all 'perfect' children...sorry, NOT the case!

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:56:56 PM)
It's ILLEGAL!!!!

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:57:00 PM)
how can holding him back help when we don't know the cause of his problems. Besides he was passing

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 10:57:31 PM)
Get this... The school wants to keep my son out of some testing done in second grade which show LEEP candidates...

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:57:33 PM)
I can't find my IDEA regs right now. But look them up and get the exact reg number so you can wow them at the next meeting.\

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:57:34 PM)
my school asked me why i didnt seek help through a private slp instead of the school...i replied that my daughter was entitled to a FAPE and I paid my taxes that covered their salaries and that's why the school was going to help Sarah

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:57:54 PM)
so I forced them to evaluate and low and behold all the problems i suspected were there

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 10:58:12 PM)
Rose...they wanted to put Travis back in 1st grade, after only 1 week of school! I said no way...plus, he has a 6 yr. old brother in 1st grade. NO WAY!

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:58:25 PM)
you can ordera complete copy of the IDEA free of charge...I"ll get together the info

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:58:42 PM)
Debbie - YES. That is all true. Funny how you have to fight for what is righfully yours already isn't it. Is it Government mentality or what?

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:59:14 PM)
Debbie, I would love this info too. I can share it with my Parent Network group!

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 10:59:16 PM)
KAL..you are fairly familiar withe the IDEA?

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 10:59:27 PM)
i told the psychologist to [please tell the school, then their answer was to try to force me to place him in special ed, I again refused

tracy (ID=58) (Sep 12, 2000 10:59:28 PM)
My problem is this with her school they tell you one thing at the IEP meeting then do something else. Is it possible to bring a tape recorder to these meeting?.

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 10:59:34 PM)
A little. More about Mass sped laws. Why?

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 11:00:13 PM)
Anyone in the PA area that is interested there is a support group meeting in Lancaster on Oct.7th

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 11:00:40 PM)
Rose, I am..

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 11:01:05 PM)
My e-mail is mccaughern@yahoo.com.

KAL/Mass (ID=56) (Sep 12, 2000 11:01:15 PM)
I'm getting more familliar with IDEA this year. Mass is cutting back on Sped regs. we're headed to more of an IDEA approach. Mass has typicall y been better than IDEA.

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 11:01:16 PM)
It isn't specifically for CAPD but all children with disabilities I can pass on the information via e-mail if your interested

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 11:01:28 PM)
Thanks!.

tracy (ID=58) (Sep 12, 2000 11:01:49 PM)
Then when they drawl up the papers none of the info is on there.

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:02:20 PM)
tracy if the info is not on the papers..do not sign them

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 11:03:18 PM)
Peggy I sent you the information on the meeting.

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 11:03:30 PM)
Thanks!

tracy (ID=58) (Sep 12, 2000 11:03:35 PM)
Oh, now I know not to sign anything that they give me. Without really really looking at every dot and every line.

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:03:50 PM)
good tracy!

KAL/Mass (ID=60) (Sep 12, 2000 11:04:06 PM)

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 11:04:22 PM)
my son's IEP last year was all based on reading problems, never even mentioned ADHD even though he was on meds.

KAL/Mass (ID=60) (Sep 12, 2000 11:04:47 PM)
I didn't mean too! :) Where can I get the info you mentioned?

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 11:04:57 PM)
Does anyone have a child in a learning support enviroment?

KAL/Mass (ID=60) (Sep 12, 2000 11:05:10 PM)
Peggy - what is that?

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:05:21 PM)
How about I send it to you via email tomorrow..(unless i can find it quick..just a sec)

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 11:05:34 PM)

KAL/Mass (ID=60) (Sep 12, 2000 11:05:38 PM)
Ok. I wont look at it now anyways. It's passed my bedtime!

KAL/Mass (ID=60) (Sep 12, 2000 11:05:46 PM)
Do you have my e-mail?

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 11:05:57 PM)

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 11:06:13 PM)
In PA, It is where he can have reading resource room with help from a Learning Support teacher. Kinda part-time special ed.

KAL/Mass (ID=60) (Sep 12, 2000 11:06:26 PM)
Oh. Mine is then. Preschool though. well, Pre-K integrated classroom.

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 11:07:16 PM)
actually part-time learning support means for all classes except gym, art, ect, too this is how they tried to get over on me

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 11:07:28 PM)
Yep. Still in regular class but can to to reading room if needed.

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 11:07:55 PM)
He only has learning support for math and reading.

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 11:07:55 PM)
full-time learning support would be totally in special ed with no interection from peers

KAL/Mass (ID=60) (Sep 12, 2000 11:08:00 PM)
Debbie - I put it on my to-do list for tomorrow.

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 11:08:15 PM)
Peggy my son is in resource room for reading

KAL/Mass (ID=60) (Sep 12, 2000 11:08:23 PM)
EEEWWWW. I'm not a fan of self contained clasrooms.

KAL/Mass (ID=60) (Sep 12, 2000 11:08:53 PM)
I like the integrated classroom best.

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 11:09:02 PM)
math isn't a problem for my son unless it involves word problems

Debb (ID=47) (Sep 12, 2000 11:09:15 PM)
KAL....me too. That's where Travis is. MUCH better, I think.

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:09:23 PM)

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 11:09:35 PM)
They say they will try support in the regular class and if he needs more 1-on-1, he will go to a smaller group in reading resourse room.

Patty (ID=59) (Sep 12, 2000 11:09:58 PM)
My son's IEP has his math level as 3 grade level presently and the goal is to increase his level to 2.9 grade-figure that one out

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:10:07 PM)

I need to call our local county to get an approval for this? Would you believe it! Oh I know she tells me today well I know that you had this done indep. however the county has to approve any help for your child. I said why did you not tell me before I had her tested that the evaluation done was only going to collect dust until she fails then you will do something for her.

rose (ID=57) (Sep 12, 2000 11:15:25 PM)

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:23:13 PM)
that's a long kindergarten!! i've used FFW and it was beneficial for us...i've heard very good things about earobics....although i've not personally used it

bev (ID=61) (Sep 12, 2000 11:23:37 PM)
Does your child get private speech therapy

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:23:56 PM)
i cant' say i've ever heard of a child recieving too much service from a school...

tracy (ID=58) (Sep 12, 2000 11:24:51 PM)
Oh they will tell you that. They will tell you how your child is too demanding for the system to handle. I heard that line once before.

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:25:29 PM)
one thought might be (and i may be wrong for thinking this way)......if your insurance is paying for OT....why not do the speech therapy through school and OT privately as a compromise?

bev (ID=61) (Sep 12, 2000 11:25:38 PM)
Everything at the school is in a group setting which is fine a lot of the time but I am wondering if it is vital to also do the one on one speech outside of the school or go the tutor route

Patty (ID=59) (Sep 12, 2000 11:26:35 PM)
Big day tomorrow. I have to get going. Nice chatting with you all. Goodnight!

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:26:44 PM)
bev. the amout of therapy and best setting will depend on your child's level of functionint

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:26:47 PM)
goodnight patty!!

bev (ID=61) (Sep 12, 2000 11:27:47 PM)
That's probably true I guess I don't know what his level of functioning is comparitively with other kids that have this specific problem

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:28:01 PM)
has he been tested by the school?

bev (ID=61) (Sep 12, 2000 11:29:10 PM)
He is six now we started testing through the school system at 3 he went to an integrated prek and then a communications disorder kindergarten and is now in a regular ed K

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:29:37 PM)
is he struggling in K according to his teacher?

bev (ID=61) (Sep 12, 2000 11:30:01 PM)
He was officially diagnosed with CAPD through All Children's . He is having trouble with attention

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:30:35 PM)
what did your aud recommend?

bev (ID=61) (Sep 12, 2000 11:30:59 PM)
Work with decoding and memory through speech therapy

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:31:34 PM)
sounds like the speech therapy is important...

bev (ID=61) (Sep 12, 2000 11:31:58 PM)
We are also supposed to be using an auditory trainer but the school hasn't produced that

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:32:37 PM)
i am a big supporter of the auditory trainers....my daughter uses one..

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:32:52 PM)
are you leaning toward continuing the therapy?

bev (ID=61) (Sep 12, 2000 11:34:23 PM)
that is good news -- I want to do the therapy, my son of course would rather be playing but I want to do what is best. We will just have to pay out of pocket, but even the speech therapist admits that she doesn't have a lot of experience with CAPD

bev (ID=61) (Sep 12, 2000 11:35:03 PM)
Does it bother your daughter to use the trainer?

debbie (ID=55) (Sep 12, 2000 11:35:16 PM)
recommend to her to join the professional listserv by dr j

Peggy (ID=37) (Sep 12, 2000 11:35:28 PM)
