Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:05:06 PM)
I'm good...good news! I am now on the road to getting Travis up to Shands...gave them Dr. M & Dr. Halls names! Keep your fingers crossed!

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:05:20 PM)

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:05:59 PM)

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:06:25 PM)
It's a nice stress reliever for me...and always makes a nice gift

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:06:51 PM)

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:09:00 PM)
Hi Peggy...

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:09:05 PM)
Hello Peggy

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:09:08 PM)
Hi,

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:09:21 PM)
So whats new in the zoo this week?

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:09:36 PM)
Tracy...I think I am getting my Dr.s referral to get Travis re-eval'd...I'm very excited tonight!

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:09:59 PM)
I am interested in the Be a Friend Program you mentioned in the e-mail.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:10:09 PM)
It's been 3 yrs. since his dx, and I think it's time to get another.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:10:34 PM)
Peggy...Debbie will be right back...she will be able to give you more info...where are you from?

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:11:13 PM)
I am from outside of Philadelphia. There is another person Rose who lives in the Philly area.

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:11:24 PM)
She was on last weeks chat.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:11:44 PM)
Peggy..yes, she usually is in here...she may show up yet....

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:11:45 PM)
I am new to CAPD. I have a 7 year old son

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:11:59 PM)
Deb that is great news. Go For It!!!

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:12:20 PM)
My son is 8 next month...it's been 3 yrs. , but still seems new...

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:12:36 PM)
He will be 8 on 10/28. I just started using the Earobics program at his school. I am going in with him 3 days per week before school so he can use it.

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:12:39 PM)
Peg I have a 7 year old daughter w/capd along with speech and language disability.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:12:57 PM)
Tracy...yeah, I'm really excited...I just want to see where things stand for him NOW, noy 3 yrs. ago...

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:13:11 PM)
My son has expressive and receptive language delays. Fine motor delays as well.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:13:43 PM)
We are in the process of getting Earobics at our school...do you have the home version? I am going to order that...just as backup...

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:13:59 PM)
The school NeuroPsyc diagnosed my son's CAPD. Is it a good idea to have a audiologist do a re-evaluation?

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:14:23 PM)
Peggy...YES!!! And one who is knowledgable on CAPD!

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:14:55 PM)
Well the school never amazes me at all. They are not going for the fm system or the speaker bought up the headset from Radio Shack. I need the act of congress to get that approved. So what they are doing is putting her into small groups teacher does not have enought time to deal with it.

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:15:16 PM)
I don't have the home version. The school has the Pro version. It is better doing it at school because we have a set time and fewer distractions. They let me use a computer in the library.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:15:38 PM)
Hi there everyone..I"m back! Sorry for delay

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:15:43 PM)
Tracy...YOU ARE KIDDING ME!! Amazing to me!!!

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:16:11 PM)
Peggy...good idea...makes sense.

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:16:15 PM)
I am live 20 minutes from Maxine Young. I made an appointment for Oct 30th. But I don't think insurance will cover it.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:16:28 PM)
Debbie...Peggy is new here, and to CAPD...

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:16:31 PM)
hi Tracy and Peggy..How are you ladies tonight?

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:16:40 PM)
Good.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:17:02 PM)
I was looking back at what I missed..Peggy you are interested in the Be-A-Friend Program?

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:17:14 PM)
Debbie...Peggy has some ?'s about the Be-A-Friend program...

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:17:15 PM)
I was interested the the "Be a friend program.

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:17:19 PM)
Yeah, she according to the iep is to give me the heads up before teaching new lesson. Well that cannot be because she does not think it is fair because the other children do not get the heads up. Since she has 21 kids in class. She cannot show favortism too one.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:17:47 PM)
Tracy,,,it's not favoritism...it's essential for your child's success.

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:18:01 PM)
This is my 2nd week on the chat. Rose was here last week and she lives in the Philly area too.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:18:44 PM)
Tracy...I just can't believe how UNWILLING your school is to work w/ you!! That is SO unfair to your daughter! Travis' teacher is going to send home his science book prior to tests so he can study better...I feel so bad for you!

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:18:48 PM)
Debbie, is it recommended my son get re-evaluated by an audiologist?

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:18:48 PM)
Peggy the Be-A-Friend is just in the beginning stages....It is designed to "partner" up individuals to provide a one on one contact in your area. Hopefully it will eventually lead to the formation of suppport groups in your area

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:19:30 PM)
Peggy personally I would recommend the reevaluation if it was not done by an audiologist in a sound proof booth

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:19:51 PM)
Be a freind sounds good to me . Rose said she is interested and there is a LD meeting in Lancaster we may meet at. We'll see.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:19:54 PM)
Tracy.....I sit here, just amazed and stunned!

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:20:07 PM)
Peggy I think Rose is goign to try and make it here tonight..she messaged me earlier and asked me about the time...

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:20:37 PM)
I know!! I have to me with her on Friday to go over her progress/weakness she scheduled me for a 20 min. meeting. Well she better have more answers to my questions. Then for her to tell me how off the wall this is. Unless we will be there all day.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:21:31 PM)
Peggy you already registered for the Be-A-Friend program, didnt you?

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:21:38 PM)
I just started using Earobics at the school this morning. I hope to get to use the Fast Forword program in maybe January.

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:21:43 PM)
I don't think soo.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:21:54 PM)
Tracy...wow...a whopping 20 min., could there spare so much time? You bet she'd better have the answers to your ?'s...I'd go in prepared w/ my list, and not leave until they are all answered!

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:22:03 PM)
I may go to the meeting in lancaster. Is that related?

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:22:06 PM)
oh ok...for some reason i was thinking i saw your name...there have been a few people register so far

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:22:59 PM)
Tracy...thank goodness she'll be out of that school soon...

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:23:06 PM)
Have you have a lot of people intereted in "Be a Friend"?

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:23:41 PM)
Your web site is really great for information!!! :)

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:23:54 PM)
The best part of this is that her speech therapist at school . Did not know what the fm system was for. She is telling me oh your daughter is going to pick up pencil sharpeners and chairs moving. I looked at her and said yeah and she is going to pick up Delta flights too. I said do you know what you are talking about or have a clue on whats going on with her. She looks at me like I am nuts. Well lady get a clue before you go denying this system for her. RRRRR

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:23:57 PM)
I just put the page up on Friday I think..so there's only been 5 or 6 so far..I've not promoted it as of yet..I still have a few things to initialize.. I think it will go over great once it is promoted

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:24:40 PM)
Tracy can you have an audiologist contact the school on your behalf

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:24:52 PM)
And she calls herself an SLP?

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:25:36 PM)
I'll check it out... Does anyone think it is proper to have the school pay for a re-eval if insurance doesn't cover? Or not.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:25:45 PM)
I didn't know that Debbie...maybe that will help Tracy.

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:26:02 PM)
I have to laugh. If not I will cry. Did that as well . The audiologist called and had to explain the system to her and guess what she still does not have a clue. Bottom line it cost them money and she is a drain on the system.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:27:20 PM)
This SLP sounds like she shouldn't be in that position. She clearly isn't watching out for your daughter...as she should be. Draining the system? WELL TOUGH!

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:27:23 PM)
Peggy getting the school to pay for the reeval may not be easy..when was the first one done?

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:27:52 PM)
Tracy..have you tried to find an advocate to go with you?

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:27:55 PM)
How do they expect her to learn for petes sake?!?!?! GRRRRRRRR

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:27:58 PM)
The school had a NeuroPsyc do an eval this past June.

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:28:24 PM)
From what I see at this site, it is better to get an audiologist to diagnose CAPD.

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:28:29 PM)
The school should pay for it. Our taxes go to the school. Why not. Thats another thing with the school since I had her tested independ. They cannot accept the independ. recommediations they have to retest her on school money. so I asked well when are you going to do that. She tells me well since she is not exactly failing there is no need right now.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:29:25 PM)
Tracy..the school must take outside testing into consideration

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:29:30 PM)
I just want to be sure we have the correct DX so we can work on remediating it if possible.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:29:30 PM)
So, they just want her to slip through the cracks, or hope that you'll go away, right? Well, we know better!

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:30:06 PM)
Peggy I sincerely believe it is better to go to an aud..i dont know what testing the neuropsych did..but the tests i've seen for capd have all been in a sound booth....

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:30:45 PM)
Tracy..what part of Georgia?

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:30:57 PM)
The schools can be really hard to deal with!!! Debbie... I made an appointment on Oct 30th with Maxine Young. She is only 20 minutes away from where I live...

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:31:25 PM)
She is also going to see if he qualifies for FFword.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:31:37 PM)
Maxine Young has an excellent reputation.. I have a great deal of respect for her. I've read one of her papers on the FFW website. It's great

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:31:45 PM)
I did call an spoke to an advocate. She tells me that GA, state laws are different in each county. She is going to call me back.

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:32:11 PM)
For now we are using Earobics at the school 3x's per week. I got her name there too.

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:33:07 PM)
Is there any way to know what causes CAPD???

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:33:10 PM)
Marietta, GA

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:33:10 PM)
state laws are different in each county????? that dont make sense

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:33:42 PM)
My son did have a hearing loss when he was younger. Dont know how long he had it though. He got tubes when he was 4 1/2.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:34:03 PM)
Peggy there is no known proven cause for capd at this time....some believe it is due to a neurological short circuit ...some say chronic ear infections as a toddler.....some say it is maturational others say they just dont know...

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:34:25 PM)
Thank you Debbie!!!

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:34:46 PM)
if it's a state law..it's a state law......have you called the GA department of education and ordered a copy of the state guidelines?

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:35:06 PM)
for what Peggy? *L*

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:35:20 PM)
yeah, it does not make sense to me either. From what I gather each county or area has funding and certain rules and regs. She is sending that to me , I spoke to her Thursday.

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:35:30 PM)
It is sometimes related to ADHD/ADD too? They thought my son had ADD last year and wanted him on Ritilin. ... Thanks for the reply..

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:35:59 PM)
just in case you need contact info for GA Georgia Department of Education 1870 Twin Towers East, Atlanta, Georgia 30334 Tel. (404) 656-3963 ยท Fax (404) 651-6457

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:36:34 PM)
Boy Debbie...you have everything at your fingertips...or you're just well organized!

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:36:53 PM)
When they did her test on capd and speech and language and the school psy.. They did tell me she does not have ADD OR ADHD.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:36:56 PM)
Peggy there are many similarities with ADD and CAPD is often misdiagnosed as ADD and ADHD....that's why the best diagnosis comes from an aud

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:37:12 PM)
Thank you Deb. I will call them tomorrow.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:38:04 PM)
Peggy you just found a nerve of mine..I"m going to send a long message in a minute about ADD and CAPD....just a sec...(this is my personal viewpoint..not that of the NCAPD...)

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:38:09 PM)
your welcome tracy and peggy

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:38:18 PM)
I am glad I didn't stop at the ADD Diagnosis... He would be on the drug and not getting the proper help! I am looking forward to meeting with Maxine Young.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:39:05 PM)
If any of you ladies were walking around with cotton in your ears next to a waterfountain all day and had a hard time hearing what was happening...would you get ancy?????

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:39:16 PM)
They thought Travis was ADD as well...but he's not...a good thing in all of this, right?!

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:39:18 PM)
would you want to take out the cotton or move away from the waterfall?

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:39:30 PM)
Oh yeah the school wanted me to put her on medicine. I said no she does not need medicine what she needs is for you to treat her like an individual. Talk to her not at her.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:39:57 PM)
I would move away.

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:40:19 PM)
That is the way these kids feel, cotton is ears..etc.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:40:49 PM)
If our kids are sitting in class and are having a hard time understanding what is being said or understanding the teacher, it is natural for them to fidget or want to go sharpen their pencil. go to the bathroom or do what ever it takes to get themself out of the situation....

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:41:20 PM)
Travis does that A LOT!!!!! Yesterday in particular...BAD DAY!!

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:41:24 PM)
My son starts to block things out.

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:41:30 PM)
I am sorry girls, its been a rough week at school. As you all well know I work there. So on one hand its a good thing on the other forget it.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:41:40 PM)
Now suddenly they are "behavior" problems who have ADD...no one takes the time to find out the real reason the kids are acting this way..it goes to what dr j always says about the underlying factor causing the problem..

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:42:24 PM)
Absolutely Debbie...

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:42:34 PM)
no matter what happens..dont let the child ask the person sitting next to them what the teacher said..then they are talking out of turn and once again are a behavior problem...

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:42:58 PM)
So true...

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:43:01 PM)
Peggy..Sarah will tune out in a heartbeat

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:43:13 PM)
That is the key, Find out what is causing the simptoms!!! Don't just treat the simptoms!!! The only way to fix something is to get to the real cause!.

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:43:13 PM)
That is so very true.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:43:19 PM)
So will Travis.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:43:24 PM)
I"m sorry..this is my personal soapbox about the confusion between ADD, ADHD and CAPD

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:43:52 PM)
exactly

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:44:01 PM)
i want to give another example...

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:44:18 PM)
It's a very good one Debbie...=)

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:44:20 PM)
my husbands nephew has been going to the dr for 6 months complaining of a headache....

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:44:41 PM)
they give him something for the headache and send him home (treat the symptom)

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:45:07 PM)
There was probably a cause the missed?

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:45:08 PM)
a month ago he ended up in the emergency room because his headache was so bad....they sent him to a specialist the next morning.....

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:45:32 PM)
he had surgery that afternoon at 3 pm to remove a tumor the size of a golf ball

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:45:40 PM)
Oh No!!

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:45:45 PM)
they treated the symptoms and never found the cause........

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:45:49 PM)
I hope he is OK!!!

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:46:00 PM)
he is ok and doing very well...feels much better now too

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:46:10 PM)
headaches are much better

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:46:13 PM)
NO WAY!!! That Dr. should be ashamed of himself...that is unexceptable!

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:46:15 PM)
How is he? I will keep in prayer

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:47:07 PM)
He's doing very well......but this is why when we are in the morning chats..dr j is always asking so many hard questions to parents about the underlying factors.....it took me a while to understand

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:47:13 PM)
I have had simular problems with Drs... They say treat the symptoms, asprin for a fever, when my son really had an ear infection or strep throut and needed an antibiotic.

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:47:55 PM)
I now take my kids to the office for anything because I have been burnt before with treating symptoms.

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:48:02 PM)
I agree with you Deb. they always look for a quick fix to all problems.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:48:25 PM)
Makes sense Debbie...Dr. J does get to the bottom of things...as any Dr. SHOULD!

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:48:27 PM)
yet..when it comes to auditory processing..we treat the symptoms..we use fm trainers and such..but do we really know the underlying factor......dont get me wrong..i have my daughter use an FM but i know why she has it

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:48:46 PM)
It is possible his CAPD comes from the treating of symptoms... Asprin for a fever when it was an ear infection.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:49:45 PM)
Deb..yes any Dr should...but few drs get to the bottom like dr j does.......(you can tell ihave alot of respect for dr j) I would love to be a student in his class...we've spent alot of time talking one on one the last 8 months

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:50:10 PM)
Peggy I could not even venture to answer that...I dont know

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:50:51 PM)
I bet he is great in class! If he's this good in the chat, I can only imagine his classroom! His son is a lucky boy to have him...Dr.J was really good this AM...

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:50:59 PM)
I realise CAPD could have lots of possible causes.

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:52:09 PM)
I was surprised how many people don't know much about CAPD.

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:52:18 PM)
Peggy does your son have an iep or 504 plan in school.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:52:18 PM)
Peggy I can say I know of a child..that had so many ear infections as a child that the fluid on the ears led to scare tissue that cause the boy to be almost totally deaf..when the dr put tubes in the boys ears..it was like he could hear for the first time...his first word was basketball...*LOL*...

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:52:33 PM)
hi Kelly..how are you tonight?

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:52:34 PM)
Peggy..you'll tun into A LOT more of them too....

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:52:44 PM)
Hello Kelly

Kelly (ID=5) (Sep 19, 2000 9:52:53 PM)
I'm good! I'll probably only be on for a few minutes - I forgot about this!

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:53:05 PM)
Hi Kelly

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:53:26 PM)
Kelly..although i was late getting the message out today.....have you signed up for the email list on the site to receive chat reminders?

Kelly (ID=5) (Sep 19, 2000 9:53:44 PM)
Yes I have.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:54:00 PM)
ok great! I know I sent message out late today...sorry!

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:54:01 PM)
Debbie, my son was like that boy... When he got the tubes, he could hear a lot better. It was like he was living under water...

Kelly (ID=5) (Sep 19, 2000 9:54:51 PM)
Are ya'll talking about ear infections leading to possible APDs?

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:55:08 PM)
the continual fluid in the ears led to a 100 % blockage in his ears.....to me that had to distort the hearing that did occur before there was total blockage..just as if you were listening under water..but im not an aud either

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:55:22 PM)
Kelly....Peggy was asking about the possibility

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:57:23 PM)
Since CAPD is not as widely known as ADD/ADHD, I guess the "Be a friend" would be a good way to get the word around...

Kelly (ID=5) (Sep 19, 2000 9:57:28 PM)
I think that's probably what led to my daughter's processing problems. She has such a high pain threshold - we found many ear infections by luck when we were in the doctor's office for a visit, so a lot of them probably went unnoticed.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:57:33 PM)
Have any of you listened to Ladle Rat Rotten Hut?

Peggy (ID=4) (Sep 19, 2000 9:57:42 PM)
I have.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 9:57:57 PM)

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 9:58:09 PM)

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 9:58:10 PM)

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:02:14 PM)
debbie: we've had a major new development over here... my 8 yr old turned up with a loss on her audiogram... she's using an Easy Listener in class until we can get hearing aids or whatever for her.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 10:02:30 PM)
We're getting it at school soon, and I will be getting it for home as well.

I"m down in florida

Peggy (ID=7) (Sep 19, 2000 10:24:29 PM)
Deb. It is a struggle with school. My younger son is in Kindergarten. I hope we don't have the same problem. He doesn't seem to be like his older brother...

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 10:25:18 PM)
Peggy...my 6 yr. old is in 1st...VERY smart little guy..helps his big brother a lot w/ reading and things..

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 10:26:49 PM)
It is a stuggle, because Travis can see that Corey knows the same or more than he does...very hard...

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 10:27:56 PM)
Marge how are your child doing in school? Does the school want to help?

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:27:56 PM)
I"m curious...I would like to start putting together the first newsletter for the NCAPD....one of the sections im thinkingof including is "What is CAPD?" according to parents....and listing different ways parents define CAPD.....what do you all think?

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 10:28:23 PM)
Great idea Debbie!!

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 10:28:25 PM)
Sounds good to me.

Peggy (ID=7) (Sep 19, 2000 10:28:45 PM)
Deb, that's nice they work together... I may be having that happen here soon too. Well, I have to go. It was really nice chatting with you all tonight... Debbie, that sound like a great idea!!!

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:29:04 PM)

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 10:29:34 PM)
Oh thats good.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:29:44 PM)
for those who liked that idea....if you want email me with how you would define capd

Peggy (ID=7) (Sep 19, 2000 10:29:45 PM)
Good night.. I'll try to make it again next week. Take care all! :)

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:29:47 PM)
debbie: hmm, i'm not crazy about how parents define capd... why not have parents describe some of the problems they face?

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:30:09 PM)
tracy: what schools are your kids in in this county?

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 10:30:13 PM)
good night peggy

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:30:18 PM)

Mt. Bethel

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:30:46 PM)
Marge...I will also have definitions from aud but what i am thinking is to show how parents understand the disorder..how we relate it to the schools...

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:30:54 PM)
debbie: oic

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:30:59 PM)
tracy: where is mt bethel?

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 10:31:39 PM)
right off of Johnson Ferry. Near the mall

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:31:40 PM)
I think we need to see how we thoroughly we are or aren't explaining it to the schools and to show how many different views there are of capd.....

Maxi (ID=8) (Sep 19, 2000 10:31:52 PM)
I had to tell my boys teacher about CAPD, as most people she had never heard of it.

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:32:11 PM)
tracy: one of my children is in preschool (private) off Powers Ferry. Our public schools are in west cobb

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:32:19 PM)
exactly Maxi...

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 10:32:37 PM)
If you want the info Debbie, I'll get it out in the next few days...maybe by the weekend...next few days are REALLY CRAZY!!!

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:32:39 PM)
maxi: right. it's not a medical dx, and doesn't get a lot of publicity.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:32:48 PM)
the majority of us end up explaining day in and day out what capd is to teachers, friends. family etc....

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:32:57 PM)
debbie: amen!

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:33:20 PM)
debbie: you also have a child w/auditory neuropathy, right?

sue (ID=9) (Sep 19, 2000 10:33:21 PM)
Has anyone seen the website that gives a "audio presentation" on what it's like to have CAPD. It's the story of Little Red Riding Hood spoken as heard from a person with CAPD. I thought it was from NICHCY.com but I can't find it anymore.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 10:33:31 PM)
You got it Debbie!

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:33:42 PM)
http://www.exploratorium.edu/rafiles/ladle.ram

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 10:33:42 PM)
Oh okay, I was just wondering. How your school handled the situation w/your child.

Maxi (ID=8) (Sep 19, 2000 10:33:43 PM)
I'm in florida too. How do you feel about the extended piles of homework? Debbie.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:33:58 PM)
that's the website sue...

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 10:34:06 PM)
I'm in Ocala Maxi...

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:34:13 PM)
sue: i am familiar with the site... but it was NOT originally done as a CAPD demo... the intent is to illustrate the importance of intonation, I think, in understanding language.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:34:21 PM)
right now our homework is not too bad...i see other schools with alot more

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:34:30 PM)
sue: it JUST HAPPENS to closely resemble what some of us hear.

Maxi (ID=8) (Sep 19, 2000 10:34:33 PM)
I'm in Miami, Debbie

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 10:34:47 PM)
Our new school is much better w/ homework...THANK GOODNESS!!

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:34:57 PM)
I"m in Jacksonville

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:35:18 PM)
Seems like we've had a lot of parents from Florida in the chat lately....

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:35:25 PM)
tracy: well, i've been talking with a lot of folks at the school for 2 years... my dau's speech teacher just loves her to pieces, and 1/2 hr after I gave her the audio report showing the loss, she arranged for the Easy Listener. Luckily, there was a spare one available.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 10:35:54 PM)
Debbie...another one for the florida group!

sue (ID=9) (Sep 19, 2000 10:35:57 PM)
Thx for the info

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:36:03 PM)
tracy: how about you?

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:36:19 PM)
we were just talking about the site...

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:36:23 PM)
tracy: are you trying for services under 504 or under IDEA?

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 10:36:49 PM)
We were trying to get her the fm system. School does not want to put out the money basically, for it. She currently has an iep on file for speech not capd.

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:37:21 PM)
tracy: you will need a report from an audiologist or doctor recommending the FM before they will give it to you.

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:37:55 PM)
tracy: several schools in our district are putting in soundfield FM. Fair Oaks has soundfield in every classroom. Bells Ferry is trying to have PTA get it for every class.

sue (ID=9) (Sep 19, 2000 10:38:20 PM)
Is there a FM that can be concealed? My daughter is in middle school and conformity is a big deal for her

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 10:38:21 PM)
Yeah we had her independ. tested and gave in the report. What the school says it that since she is not failing why bother at this point.

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:38:24 PM)
tracy: i went toe-to-toe with the 504 coordinator for the county, our principal, and several other notable folks

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:39:03 PM)
sue: yeah, somewhat... there is a "teardrop" telecoil that fits into the ear. you wear a receiver on your belt, and use a neckloop. the loop can be concealed under clothing.

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:39:23 PM)
sue: does she only have capd, or does she have hearing loss plus capd?

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:39:29 PM)
be right back

sue (ID=9) (Sep 19, 2000 10:39:33 PM)
So there is no wire from the ear to the receiver?

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:39:39 PM)
sue: correct.

sue (ID=9) (Sep 19, 2000 10:39:47 PM)
She has no hearling loss

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:40:32 PM)
sue: there are some gizmos that have the fm built into something like a hearing aid, but they are costly compared to belt pack systems. financially, they only make sense if you are aiding a hearing loss, in my opinion

sue (ID=9) (Sep 19, 2000 10:40:44 PM)
Yeah, her audiologist mentioned using one briefly after seeing him but we're still waiting on his final report...and waiting....

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 10:40:56 PM)
Marge, Oh, I was telling everybody earlier what happened regarding this fm system. The special ed teacher tells me oh she is going to pick up pencil sharpener and outside noises. I said yeah and she is going to pick up delta flights too. She has not clue. Plus the teacher does not want to wear a mic.

Maxi (ID=8) (Sep 19, 2000 10:41:12 PM)
No one use to listen to me at my son's school until I filed for a Hearing and Mediation and It was an 8 hour strugle, along with my son's advocate, but we got most of what we wanted, now to start implementing is another fight. It seems we always have to fight for our kids

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:41:43 PM)
tracy: the teacher must do whatever it takes to help the child... and she WONT pick up the pencil sharpener & outside sounds!!! that is the whole point of personal fm systems

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 10:41:55 PM)
If we don't...they certainly won't!

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:42:59 PM)
tracy: you need to get it in writing from a doc or audiologist that your child needs FM ... then you call IEP meeting and get that added. the state of georgia has a document that even recommends FM for CAPD applications... it is a guide to implementing 504 in the state... not that the state will ever tell you about it!

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:43:28 PM)
tracy : if the teacher refuses the mic, you may need to place your child in a diff class where the teacher is receptive.

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 10:44:10 PM)
You are so right Maxi. Everything that she has was a struggle to get. Oh I now Marge, this is the professional, that I have to deal with. I asked her did you read the report or did you just pick out the free stuff and the stuff that costs money you have to evaluate .

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:44:56 PM)
tracy: yeah, the school was a breeze on the no-cost stuff. the FM was another story

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 10:45:11 PM)
They want her to fail first . Then be super hero and come up with a solution.

sue (ID=9) (Sep 19, 2000 10:45:23 PM)
My daughter has "preferential seating" written in her IEP but all kids are in ABC order in all 6 of her classes. How difficult is "preferential seating" to implement?????

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:45:39 PM)
tracy: you don't need to wait for that to happen if you go thru 504.

Maxi (ID=8) (Sep 19, 2000 10:45:47 PM)
But even with

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 10:46:03 PM)
My son has preerential seating..I just asked his teacher, and she did it.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:46:05 PM)
Tracy..my school originally told me no on the Fm too....when i asked the school to document why they said no and where it was in the regs that she could not have an fm for capd....their attitude changed.

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:46:08 PM)
sue: have you asked the teacher re: pref. seating?

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:46:20 PM)
debbie: smart move!

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 10:46:23 PM)
Since she was indepd. tested. Do you know the time frame the schools has to evaluation on their money to test her. Is that the same as IEP? That we do have.

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:46:51 PM)
tracy: sorry, i'm not understanding your question... can you pls restate?

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:47:21 PM)
marge it was amazing when iasked for documentation..i got results

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:47:33 PM)
debbie: i will remember that.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:48:28 PM)
If you ever get a school to document refusal for services under an IEP or 504 you have a great hand for a due process hearing

Maxi (ID=8) (Sep 19, 2000 10:49:12 PM)
Goodnight all. I am so exhausted, I can't think for one more second. Talk to you all next time.

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 10:49:13 PM)
Yeah she sits near the board. Since we had her independ. tested and they want to evaluate the test results. What time frame do they have to do another evaluation on their money? I am not paying for that test again. All that I get from them is just because your doctor said she needs this does not mean she will get it. We have to do our own test.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:49:20 PM)
goodnight Maxi

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 10:49:27 PM)
Goodnight Maxi...

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 10:49:42 PM)
good night Maxi

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:50:04 PM)
tracy insist on an aud who is familiar wth capd

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:50:07 PM)
tracy: i think they have 30 days... is that right, debbie? debbie, how can tracy fight this?

sue (ID=10) (Sep 19, 2000 10:50:35 PM)
Whoops, I got thrown out of the system. No, I havn't mentioned the seating thing yet. The audiologist's report should come tomorrow. I have a feeling I will be asking for other things too, like a FM.

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:50:53 PM)
tracy: they have to refer all capd evals out... they use Martha Miller for their capd evals. She is a very good audiologist. she is very busy. don't know how long it would take to get appt with her.

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:50:55 PM)
I honestly recommend that she contact the state department of education and ask them the questions..they will giverher straight answers.....the rep i talked to from the state was extremely supportive

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:51:51 PM)
whew! late here! i must go! nice chatting with you all!

tracy (ID=3) (Sep 19, 2000 10:51:52 PM)
I hand in the test results last March. they are still doing an evaluation on her. Since she is not failing as of now they are not pushing for it.

Deb (ID=2) (Sep 19, 2000 10:52:07 PM)
Nite Marge...

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:52:09 PM)
laws do vary from state to state..i dont want to give a wrong answer......tracy i would write a letter requesting a date for the reevaluation..give them 10 days to reply

debbie (ID=1) (Sep 19, 2000 10:52:16 PM)
night marge..take care!~

Marge (ID=6) (Sep 19, 2000 10:52:19 PM)
