karen (ID=10) (Oct 10, 2000 9:07:04 PM)
Do most schools provide speech, or do most people need to find there own therapists
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:07:10 PM)
I know Dr J himself is from the New York city area..he may be able to help himslef
karen (ID=10) (Oct 10, 2000 9:07:27 PM)

debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:07:27 PM)

karen (ID=10) (Oct 10, 2000 9:08:14 PM)

karen (ID=10) (Oct 10, 2000 9:12:03 PM)
how is your daughter doing?
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:12:44 PM)
she's been down sick the last few days....but overall is doing much better with her capd
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:13:23 PM)
Sarah uses an FM trainer in school and is actually noticing how it benefits her
karen (ID=10) (Oct 10, 2000 9:14:08 PM)
My son is only in first grade, and I don't want him to rely on that if he can learn to focus on his own
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:15:13 PM)
i dont want sarah to become dependent on it..but it helps her to concentrate and to sort out the sounds...the FM keeps her from struggle to decode and sort out background noise so she can focus
karen (ID=10) (Oct 10, 2000 9:16:08 PM)
at what age did she get it?
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:16:47 PM)
she was diagnosed at age 6 1/2....her father and i knew there was something wrong from age 2 on

sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:20:34 PM)

kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:20:44 PM)
maybe and hopefully
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:20:46 PM)
Debbie, how is *your* Sarah doing?
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:20:46 PM)
thank you...but it's not just me....there's been a lot of support from so many people
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:21:03 PM)
sareysmom..what name do you usallly go by?
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:21:21 PM)
Sarah has been home sick for two days...she'll be out of school tomorrow too
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:21:28 PM)
I took a semester off college - that was all I needed. I hope it will be the same with her, kmanbam
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:21:45 PM)
we hope so too
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:21:47 PM)

debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:21:54 PM)
ok! *LOL*
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:22:01 PM)
I'm sorry Sarah is sick :(
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:22:21 PM)
I feel so bad cause im in training and cant' stay home with her......
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:22:29 PM)
what's wrong with sarah?
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:23:17 PM)
she's had the flu...both girls have it...i was up with them alot last night so i may not be here late tonight
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:24:26 PM)
I'm sorry, Debbie. Hope they're well soon
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:24:33 PM)
Karen are you a member of the listserv I was telling you about?
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:25:21 PM)
thank you...i hope so too....they are out of school on friday so they may end up missing the rest of the week..i dont want to have them sick on monday, tues , and wedenesday just in time to go back to school to take a test on what they've missed all week
karen (ID=10) (Oct 10, 2000 9:25:45 PM)
All I have done so far is spend hours downloading info off the web to learn about capd, and to educate my son's teachers who are not familiar with it.
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:25:55 PM)
I've been reading the listserv and see some discussion about CAPD not being CSE classification. Does it fall into the LD catigory or what is the actual fact?
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:26:20 PM)
Dr J's listserv is the best source of info i've found
karen (ID=10) (Oct 10, 2000 9:26:36 PM)
I will definitely go there next.
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:26:57 PM)
Is capd considered an LD? I never thought of it that way
karen (ID=10) (Oct 10, 2000 9:27:17 PM)
what does cse stand for?
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:27:35 PM)
kmanbam..capd itself is usually not enough to get a child an IEP or ....there was however a report recently on CBS eveing news with Dan Rather that indicated that 1/3 of all children that have LD's usually have an auditory processing disorder
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:27:39 PM)
committee of special education
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:28:13 PM)
that's interesting
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:28:29 PM)
What do the federal guidelines say?
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:28:30 PM)
the debate about APD is whether it is an LD or medical condition..depending on who you talk to
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:28:34 PM)
so CAPD isn't considered adisability in it's own right, as much as it is an undrlying cause of a disability?
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:28:46 PM)
from my understanding
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:29:26 PM)
So, is it a 504 issue?
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:29:29 PM)
My daughter got her IEP for being speech/language impaired when she was 4 ...even though her language skills were above age level. Just for a speech problem.
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:29:42 PM)
I'm lucky, now I don't have to fight to get an IEP for CAPD
karen (ID=10) (Oct 10, 2000 9:29:55 PM)
your district must be generous sareysmom
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:29:56 PM)
Is she still classified and how old is she, sareysmom
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:30:22 PM)
She is 6 now, just started 1st grade. She's still classified though perhaps not much longer
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:30:41 PM)
How is she doing in school now?
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:30:44 PM)
we may switch to a 504 ?? is that what it's called? for the APD and mild motor delays
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:30:54 PM)
we are on a 504
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:31:21 PM)
Sarah is doing fine in school now ***KNOCKING ON WOOD***
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:31:35 PM)
debbie, what kind of support does your daughter get on 504?
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:31:45 PM)
Her principal put her in a very structured classroom with 15 kids, 2 FT teachers, and a PT aide
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:32:05 PM)
Sarah get's her FM trainer and accomodations set up in classroom.....
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:32:06 PM)
so she's able to manage OK without a speaker system
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:32:18 PM)
maybe we should all move to sareysmom's district.
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:32:43 PM)
LOL ... I guess I am very blessed. I didn't realize it until i started reading about others' experiences!!!
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:33:03 PM)
I wish school systems that were helpful where the norm!
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:33:14 PM)
debbie, what are her accomodations?
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:33:23 PM)
They should be!!!
karen (ID=10) (Oct 10, 2000 9:33:54 PM)
how do you explain to your children why they have to work so hard in school? do you tell them they have capd???
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:34:03 PM)
special seating, special testign arrangements...vocabulary early....breaks if she needs them...etc...
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:34:11 PM)
yes Karen, I told Sarah she has capd.
karen (ID=10) (Oct 10, 2000 9:34:22 PM)

debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:35:17 PM)
hi Marge, hi Mary
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:35:17 PM)
hi debbie, karen, kman, mary, and sareysmom
Mary (ID=15) (Oct 10, 2000 9:35:17 PM)
Hi, this is my first time here.
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:35:28 PM)
we are happy to have you here Mary!
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:35:29 PM)
well, an extra big welcome for you mary!!
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:35:32 PM)
We tell our daughter that she has a different style of learning and that she is very smart, but just has to learn differently. We also have told our daughter that she has a processing disorder
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:35:37 PM)
mary: are you on the st johns capd list
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:35:43 PM)
My Sarah is 6; I just told her "she hears a little differently," that background noise might bother her more than other kids
Mary (ID=15) (Oct 10, 2000 9:36:07 PM)
No. What is that?
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:36:25 PM)
I told Sarah she understands a little different than most people
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:36:37 PM)
mary: it is an email group... i am sure there is info about the list on debbie's site
Mary (ID=15) (Oct 10, 2000 9:36:57 PM)
ok, thanks, Marge. I'll check it out.
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:37:13 PM)
debbie, how does your daughter do with reading?
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:37:43 PM)
anyway, mary, just thought i'd asked... thinking maybe i'd seen one of your posts on the list... but it doesn't matter :-) what is your particular interest in APD?
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:37:53 PM)
she struggles with reading and does not enjoy it since it is hard for her...i try to keep her excited about it..
Mary (ID=15) (Oct 10, 2000 9:38:07 PM)
If I may, I'd like to ask you all if you think this is something I should explore for my son.

sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:38:23 PM)
Doe s reading tend to get harder, with an APD, in the higher grades?
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:38:30 PM)
Hi Deb.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:38:43 PM)
<--- hopes no one will slap her if she mentions that her daughters love to read and excel at it... but I hasten to point out that we do not have TV at home, and spend time reading to the kids & having them read to us.
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:38:44 PM)
hey Deb!!! how are you tonight?
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:38:45 PM)
Reading's not a problem here so far, but we're just starting 1st grade
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:38:49 PM)
mary: fire awawy!! :-)
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:39:00 PM)
Hi everyone...just got back from our PTA mtg.
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:39:16 PM)
Hi Deb
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:39:30 PM)
met anymore strangers on the street Deb? =)
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:39:53 PM)
How did the PTA meeting go?
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:39:55 PM)
sary: i'll bet if the child doesn't develop a good reading strategy (whole words, phonics, a little of both, whatever) that it would get harder as the material becomes less phonetic and a larger vocabulary is assumed. that's just a guess tho'
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:39:57 PM)
Marge, how old are your daughters?
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:40:13 PM)
Debbie...Yeah....a couple of ya-hoo women the other day!! *LOL* How about you?!?!
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:40:34 PM)
kman: 11 yrs old (6th grade), 9 yrs old (4th grade), 8 yrs old (2nd grade), 6 yrs old (Montessori: in her last year which equates to K5)
Mary (ID=15) (Oct 10, 2000 9:40:38 PM)
I have a 3 year old son who has just been evaluated by a speech pathologist and child psychologist. He has a 6 month expressive language delay and possibly a receptive delay. He also CAN read and write (no kidding). He is drawing complete stick figure people etc. His child psychologist says he has ADD without the hyperactivity. Can anyone relate. Thanks.
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:40:39 PM)
There was this wild woman who flagged me down!!

mary: has your son been evaluated by an audiologist?
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:41:10 PM)
Did she look dangerous?! STAY AWAY from her...I hear she's a phyco!!
Tammy (ID=17) (Oct 10, 2000 9:41:25 PM)
HI EVERYONE!
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:41:30 PM)
<-- surmises that Deb & Debbie must've met in real life today :-)
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:41:31 PM)
Hi Tammy
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:41:32 PM)
hi tammy
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:41:34 PM)

hi Michelle
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 9:41:57 PM)
hello
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:41:58 PM)
Debbie...sorry....
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:42:00 PM)
Mary, why does the psychologist think your son has ADD?
Tammy (ID=17) (Oct 10, 2000 9:42:05 PM)
TIRED..OTHER THAN THAT NOT TOO BAD...
Mary (ID=15) (Oct 10, 2000 9:42:08 PM)
He's seeing an ENT this week and audiologist next week. His language development has been early up until the last few months. His speech pronunciation is average to above.
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:42:09 PM)
Yes Marge,,,deb and i met on Sunday........
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:42:09 PM)
Hi Tammy
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:42:16 PM)
My daughter reads at almost grade level(5th grade), but is so slow at it that she gets discouraged at the time it takes.
Tammy (ID=17) (Oct 10, 2000 9:42:34 PM)
hi deb. hi marge.
Mary (ID=15) (Oct 10, 2000 9:42:36 PM)
ADD due to developmental delayed in attention ability.
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:42:44 PM)
Debbie...where and what time on Monday? Are you going to go?
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 9:42:49 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 24.31.160.122 )
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:42:51 PM)
mary: the reason i ask is because while a speech path & a psych might be able to see the effects of a bona fide hearing problem, they are NOT qualified to diagnose it. and only a medical doctor can diagnose ADD. the psych might see findings suggestive of ADD, but can't diagnose it, as far as i know.
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:42:59 PM)
hi Kathy
Tammy (ID=17) (Oct 10, 2000 9:42:59 PM)
hi kathy.
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:43:01 PM)
Hi KAthy
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:43:03 PM)
mary: will you be seeing a pediatric ENT?
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 9:43:10 PM)
Hello all!
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 9:43:30 PM)
my son is 6 yrs old and has capd....he does ok with his school but is easily distracted and impulsive in the schoolyard
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:43:44 PM)
I got a brochure today from the Council for Exceptional Children about upcoming lectures on the IDEA....the one in Orlando Florida is on 10/23 at 9 am
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:44:01 PM)
mary: 3 yrs old is waaaaay too young to dx ADD from what I've been told. and if he's already reading & writing, it could be the way a very smart 3 yr old is trying to compensate for hearing difficulties of one type or another.
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 9:44:31 PM)
it is true that adhd and capd are very similiar
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 9:44:52 PM)
my oldest son is 10 yrs old and was diagnosed with adhd at 4 yrs old
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:44:58 PM)
Debbie...do you think you're going to go? I bet it would be great.
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:45:04 PM)
adhd, add and capd have similar characteristics, but are very different disorders.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:45:12 PM)
michelle: um, not really: there was a survey done comparing the two disorders, and they found that there was overlap on only 2 or 3 of the characteristics
karen (ID=10) (Oct 10, 2000 9:45:16 PM)
kmanbam-my son was not put in the highest reading group even though he is a great reader, since by the time he takes out his book, and gets organized the rest of the top group is done.
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 9:45:16 PM)
yes..thats true
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:45:20 PM)
I KNOW I AM!! I already talked to woody
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:45:23 PM)
michelle: i have the citation for that if you want it
Mary (ID=15) (Oct 10, 2000 9:45:31 PM)
Regular ENT. And I'm here to ask you guys what you think about CAPD as a possible explanation for these delays.
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 9:45:42 PM)
ok
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:45:56 PM)
DEbbie...Let me know where it's at...I'd really like to go.
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:46:28 PM)
I will be posting the info on the website tomorrow night and will send to you via email
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:46:46 PM)
I thought you and your mom might like to go...penny is going with me...we could have a reunion *LOL*
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:46:56 PM)
mary: it would be much better to see a pediatric ent if one is available... 3 yrs old is way too young to diagnose CAPD too: so many of the tests depend on having a kindergarten level vocabulary. unless you could prove that his vocabulary is sky high, many of the CAPD tests can't be run... but don't despair...
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:47:03 PM)
Debbie...GREAT!!! THANKS!! Wow...we get to hang together again...I can't wait! Bringing Penny?
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:47:13 PM)
you know it Deb!
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 9:47:26 PM)
ENT?
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 9:47:29 PM)
Where did everyone get their CAPD or APD diagnosis? My son is 7.6 - we tried 3-4 yrs ago and couldn't get the diagnosis...but presume that's involved. He also has severe apraxia.
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:47:37 PM)
Debbie..I'll talk to my Mom tomorrow about it.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:47:37 PM)
mary: i would insist that they run enough hearing tests to *prove* that his hearing is intact... if that means running otoacoustic emissions (quick cheap painless)... ENT is ear nose throat doctor...
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:47:42 PM)
I coudlnt sleep sunday night...was toohyper thinking about the everything we talked about
Tammy (ID=17) (Oct 10, 2000 9:47:57 PM)
we got cj's diagnosis from his audiologist.
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:48:02 PM)
My daughter was diagnosed by an audiologist, not a specialist in APDs, but qualified.
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:48:13 PM)
Me too...it was a great afternoon!! I'm sooo glad we were able to get together!
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:48:15 PM)
only an audiologist can truly dianose capd
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:48:32 PM)
oops..diagnose
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:48:33 PM)
I think it was actually Sarah's PT who caught the APD though. LOL.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:48:34 PM)
mary: ... or even the evoked potential studies (like abr, mlr), (not quick not cheap but painless)... it would be well well well worth your while to be SURE that a hearing problem is not causing the delays.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:49:10 PM)
debbie is right: only an audiologist can dx CAPD... and only about 1/2 of them even have the tests.
Mary (ID=15) (Oct 10, 2000 9:49:18 PM)
Why is the audiologist the only one who can diagnose?
nee nee (ID=20) (Oct 10, 2000 9:49:26 PM)

Tammy (ID=17) (Oct 10, 2000 9:49:33 PM)
hi nee nee!
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:49:37 PM)
Hi nee nee
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:49:51 PM)
mary: they are the only ones with the right equipment and credentials to run the diff hearing tests... and to be able to differentiate the results from hearing loss
Beth (ID=21) (Oct 10, 2000 9:49:55 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 64.197.77.49 )
Tammy (ID=17) (Oct 10, 2000 9:50:04 PM)
hi beth!
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:50:06 PM)
Hi Beth
karen (ID=10) (Oct 10, 2000 9:50:07 PM)
Thanks for all your help tonite Debbie. I must go , but really appreciate the info. and look forward to joining the chat again soon. Is it only Tues. nites?
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:50:10 PM)
Mary........capd has to be tested for in a sound booth
Mary (ID=15) (Oct 10, 2000 9:50:26 PM)
Ok, correct me please if I'm wrong. The audiologist rules OUT hearing loss. Right?
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:50:29 PM)
right now on tuesday night only..but will be beginning IDEA discussion group on Mondays
Beth (ID=21) (Oct 10, 2000 9:50:38 PM)
Hello
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 9:50:45 PM)
Have you heard of the "Buffalo" model...I guess at SUNY @ Buffalo they have the testing to determine more exactly where the problem is........they wrote the book "Central Auditory Processing Disorders...mostly management. Drew had a brainstem hearing scan which was normal, same as the audiologist - ruled out hearing loss.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:50:45 PM)
mary: unless you had a speech path who was also certified as an audiologist (look for CCC-A after the name), which used to be a common combination of certifications. a psych with a ccc-a would be pretty rare to find.
karen (ID=10) (Oct 10, 2000 9:50:48 PM)
Thanks again. Goodnite!
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:50:52 PM)
Hi Beth hi neenee
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:50:55 PM)
good night Karen
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:51:02 PM)
Bye Karen
nee nee (ID=20) (Oct 10, 2000 9:51:12 PM)
hi everybody!
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:51:15 PM)
mary: among other things, the audiologist will want to rule out hearing loss as an explanation for the observed behavior
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:51:20 PM)
My daughter was evaluated at SUNY Buffalo.
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:51:29 PM)
They were wonderful
Mary (ID=15) (Oct 10, 2000 9:51:38 PM)
After hearing loss is ruled out, what's the next step.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:51:45 PM)
mary: testing 3 yr olds hearing requires a pediatric audiologist, by the way
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 9:52:08 PM)
is a child with capd Entitled to have speech therapy in school?
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:52:09 PM)
kmanbam....I used to live in Ithaca, NY...only a few hrs. away from Buffalo.
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:52:12 PM)
Just to let everyone know to watch for an announcement on the email list for this site....we will be beginning a monday night discussion group on the IDEA
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 9:52:29 PM)
Kmanbam = We're considering taking Drew there - we live in Ohio. I've also heard that Northwestern University has good diagnostics. Who did your daughter see, and how old is she?
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:52:46 PM)
Michelle...my 8 yr. old son has had sppech for his capd since he was 3.
Tammy (ID=17) (Oct 10, 2000 9:53:19 PM)
michelle, my son has had speech therapy since he was in preschool---even before they dx the capd.
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:53:30 PM)
Deb, what does the speech therapist do to address your son's CAPD?
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:53:34 PM)
My daughter is now 10 yo and she saw Nancy Stecker, audiologist and Gay Masters for speech eval.
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:53:39 PM)
capd does not in itself qualify for speech..but if the capd is an underlying factor causing speech problems.then the child may qualify
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 9:53:52 PM)
my son is doing ok academically and when I spoke to the speech therapist she said that our school district doesn't do anything with speech therapy for CAPD
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:53:53 PM)
mary: there are dozens of tests for hearing... to say "rule out hearing loss" can take a half a day depending on what tests they need to run... or it could take just a 1/2 hour, depending on what turns up on some of the more routine tests... if hearing loss is ruled out, depending on the behaviors your son has, they might run the evoked potential studies. these are simlar to an eeg: electrodes on the forehead, and take a while to run.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:54:29 PM)
michelle: they wouldn't do anything for speech therapy with JUST a capd diagnosis... but if the child shows speech problems, then they qualify for services no matter what their dx is.
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 9:54:41 PM)
ok
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 9:54:44 PM)
thanks
Beth (ID=21) (Oct 10, 2000 9:55:21 PM)
do most kids have only CAPD? i think my son has more than one dx
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:55:32 PM)
My daughter gets speech for the very first time this year to address word finding and word ordering problems.
Tammy (ID=17) (Oct 10, 2000 9:55:33 PM)
debbie, did you check with the school about "other health impaired"?
Mary (ID=15) (Oct 10, 2000 9:55:33 PM)
What would be the benefit of putting him through all this testing? I mean what happens after you get a diagnosis of CAPD that wouldn't happen without it?
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 9:55:43 PM)
sareysmom...he's in a new school w/ a new therapist...she's only been seeing him for 3 or 4 weeks...she's working on his articulation, and developing other areas to work with him. I'm getting him re-tested for his capd in Nov...hopefully, we;ll be able to once again, pinpoiunt his real needs and weaknesses.
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 9:55:47 PM)
Beth - my son has what we believe to be severe CAPD and severe apraxia
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 9:55:48 PM)
I did a healthcast on ADHD and spoke about CAPD but they did not AIR anything on CAPD
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:55:58 PM)
beth: i don't think anyone has tried to figure out what other traits might go along w/capd
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:56:02 PM)
not yet....im in training this week during the day..big switch from working nights
Beth (ID=21) (Oct 10, 2000 9:56:44 PM)
know my son has visual problems and his handwriting is pretty bad. But his OT has suggested SI problems too
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:56:59 PM)
Is CAPD related to discipline issues (at school) with your kids?
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 9:57:02 PM)
kmanbam - was SUNY Buffalo able to make specific recommendations for your daughter?
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:57:11 PM)
Beth, my daughter seems to have other SI issues also.
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:57:12 PM)
we dont have discipline problems
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:57:18 PM)
mary: classroom accommodations of various sorts: at the very least you'd put the teacher on notice that your son might need instructions repeated, or needs to sit in the front of the class. there are other accommodations possible depending on the need. is your son in a classroom setting
Tammy (ID=17) (Oct 10, 2000 9:57:25 PM)
cj has several diagnoses: capd, delayed motor skills, speech delay
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 9:57:26 PM)
yes.....my son is distracted and impulsive
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:57:29 PM)
debbie: or at least none that don't just come with the age, huh?
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 9:57:49 PM)
Kathy, yes they did. We recieved lengthy written reports with recommendations.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 9:57:51 PM)
brb: need to put the 6th grader to bed :-)
Beth (ID=21) (Oct 10, 2000 9:57:53 PM)
sareysmom, how old is your daughter? my son just turned 9 and in 3rd grade
Tammy (ID=17) (Oct 10, 2000 9:57:56 PM)
cj is also distractive and impulsive but we don't usually have a behavior problem.
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:58:08 PM)
My daughter gets consequences for not following directions
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:58:21 PM)
She has missed recess for this once or twice
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 9:58:33 PM)
what I did is I took some recommendations for academics off the internet and sent a copy of it to his teacher before the year started
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 9:58:53 PM)
Speaking of SI problems (which I've read to be related to apraxia), has anyone had their child tested at the NACD (Nat'l Academy for Child Development) ? Anyone doing therapy for sensory integration problems...we haven't tested for them yet.
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:58:53 PM)
Her teacher seems to be on top of making sure she truly "heard" what was said before disciplining her. But it is kind of tricky.
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 9:59:05 PM)
Marge..Sarah is 9 and by no means is she a perfect angel..but she's really good
Mary (ID=15) (Oct 10, 2000 9:59:19 PM)
No, I'm a SAHM. If I know that he has difficulties focusing and comprehending I can make adjustments, what I mean is what does that diagnoses do for him?
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 9:59:24 PM)
I would not let them keep your child in for recess because they need to release the frustration somewhere.....they need a break
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:59:36 PM)
My daughter hasn't had a formal SI eval. but her school OT anD PT have worked on this to some degree
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 9:59:57 PM)
I feel the same way Michelle. But it's a school wide policy.
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 10:00:38 PM)
then get an IEP and put it in there
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:00:53 PM)
That's a good suggestion.
Tammy (ID=17) (Oct 10, 2000 10:00:58 PM)
they can't take recess away if the iep says he needs it.
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 10:01:13 PM)
yes
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 10:01:17 PM)
Ladies, Im going to excuse myself early tonight. Haven't had much sleep for two nights with the girls beign sick and I have to be out the door very early in the am for training class.
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:01:52 PM)
good night debbie!
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 10:02:01 PM)

sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:02:10 PM)
Good night Debbie. Get well wishes to the girls.
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:02:20 PM)
Good night Tammy

Nite Debbie...sleep tight!
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:02:30 PM)
Hope your baby will sleep for you.
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 10:02:31 PM)
my daughter is screaming
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:02:46 PM)
everyone's asleep at my house!
debbie (ID=9) (Oct 10, 2000 10:02:49 PM)
thanks everyone...sweet dreams
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:02:50 PM)
Oh no, what's wrong, Michelle?
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:02:55 PM)
Has anyone tried supplimenting their childs reading with books on tape and was there any improvement in comprehension?
Beth (ID=21) (Oct 10, 2000 10:02:57 PM)
did any of you find that the school suggested ADD or ADHD w/child?
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 10:03:22 PM)
My house is childless tonight!! They're at Gramma and Poppy's!! Yeah!!
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 10:03:57 PM)
actually they said they didnt think it was
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:04:22 PM)
Drew's just learning to read....no tapes yet. ....thank goodness for Gramma & Poppy!
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 10:04:35 PM)
my older son has adhd and i was always concerned about it
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:04:38 PM)
back
Beth (ID=21) (Oct 10, 2000 10:04:46 PM)
i don't feel my son is ADD either but they did suggest it
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 10:05:00 PM)
Kathy...absolutely! My hubby and I went to the PTA mtg...
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:05:16 PM)
They didn't bring up ADD with my daughter, which kind of surprised me.
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 10:05:21 PM)
the hospital had a lecture on the similaritis of adhd capd
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:05:34 PM)
Do you all feel speech therapy is helpful for CAPD?
Beth (ID=21) (Oct 10, 2000 10:05:45 PM)
most people i've talked to have never heard of CAPD
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:05:50 PM)
true
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 10:05:54 PM)
alot of the same symptoms
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 10:06:01 PM)
Kathy...I see a HUGE difference in the summer when he is without it!
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:06:02 PM)
They noticed she stays on task a long time when she's involved with something, and picked up on the auditory stuff. pretty perceptive of them.
Beth (ID=21) (Oct 10, 2000 10:06:27 PM)
will FastForward help w/CAPD?
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:06:32 PM)
Speech has helped my daughte with articulation and intonation, but they haven't specifically addressed the CAPD.
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 10:07:29 PM)
sareysmom...same with Travis...we'll see what happens after his re-eval.
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:07:34 PM)
interesting......we have backed off of speech for a few months...we are taking drew to Indianapolis for osteopathic manipulation - seeing some differences. Beth...Drew tried FFW several yrs ago (when he was 5maybe...he couldn't understand enough of it to do it....i'm considering trying it again, but i'm not sure. did you try earobics? for $60 it's somewhat similar.
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 10:08:25 PM)
?FAST FORWARD
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:08:45 PM)
kathy, what does the osteopathic manipulation do for him?
Beth (ID=21) (Oct 10, 2000 10:08:53 PM)
i haven't done any programs. been trying to get a dx. he's been in speech and OT since he was almost 4
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:08:58 PM)
mary: ok, i see why you're asking... well, then you'd know to use the right accommodations at home... if they do find hearing loss, then hearing aids are usually indicated... and you would be able to use the same classroom accommodations such as being sure he's looking at you when you give him directions, or bringing him to a quiet room if you need to give him lengthy directions, or understanding why he might not be happy going to a noisy restaurant.
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 10:09:04 PM)
We just got Earobics in school...I'm going to get the home version as well.
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:09:10 PM)
My daughter is using earobics now. SUNY Buffalo recommended it.
Michelle (ID=18) (Oct 10, 2000 10:09:20 PM)
GOTTA GO...SEE YOU NEXT WEEK
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 10:09:31 PM)
Nite Michelle...
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:09:33 PM)
deb: who at your school is using earobics? reg ed kids, speech ther kids...?
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:10:28 PM)
Our school just ordered it for speech kids.
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 10:10:35 PM)
Marge...they're going to first put it in the classes which have children getting speech...then, it will be available to every class. Each classroom has 6 computers in it.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:10:37 PM)
mary: or, if he's having trouble with turning individual sounds into words, you would know to do some of those phonemic awareness workbooks
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:11:09 PM)
deb: that's forward thinking! will be interesting to see the results!
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:12:00 PM)
sareysmom...OMT is based on the theory that you treat the whole body to get everything aligned. Drew was basically dead when he was born......they feel that he has a tight jaw and tongue and loosening it may help his apraxia (and possibly make more room in his mouth),, and when there is misalignment of muscles in the head, it may pull on the dura of the brain, which may slow the blood flow to critical parts of the brain. My husband happens to be an osteopathic dr, but works E.R.
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:12:13 PM)
kmanbam - how is your daughter doing with earobics/
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 10:12:19 PM)
Marge...Yeah..i'm really excited about it! My Mom actually got it for the school through a huge organization in the retirement community they live in!
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:12:48 PM)
That is interesting, Kathy! :)
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:12:51 PM)
deb: wow!!! i hope you are doing a reeeeeeal nice thank-you dinner or something for them!
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:13:08 PM)
Sareysmom, she's doing ok, but hates it. Probably because it makes her listen.
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:13:30 PM)
Drew says "is hard!"
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:13:57 PM)
anyone used Lindamood bell therapies?
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 10:14:01 PM)
Marge....We're going to send them something, not sure what yet. Plus, I'm going to do up a thank you card w/ Travis sitting at the computer using the program, and use that for the front of the card.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:14:05 PM)
kathy: i have heard good things about osteopathic docs... i know that they are allowed to order the same tests as medical docs (unlike chiropractors)... can you give me a quick idea of other ways in which osteopaths differ from chiropractors
Beth (ID=21) (Oct 10, 2000 10:14:07 PM)
i'm new here but are most of these kids in regular class
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:14:49 PM)
kathy: you can find out more abt lindamood bell in capd from the st johns capd list archive. debbies website will have instructions for joining the capd listserver so you have access.
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:15:10 PM)
kmanbam how old is your daughter? what areas of auditory processing does she have trouble with?
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:15:19 PM)
They have the same education as allopathic physicians, except in addition they learn the manipulation and alignment of the body. Otherwise, they are exactly the same---if not better (skewed opinion of course).
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:15:44 PM)
We almost finished earobics 1. She had the most trouble with Farmer Fardell. Even I had trouble with that one. LOL.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:15:54 PM)
mary: you ok?? hope i didn't flood you with too much info :-)
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:16:06 PM)
Marge...thanks...we went to california to try out Lindamood-Bell...not with great success...a two week trial - Drew was very atypical for them...they weren't sure how to approach him.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:16:31 PM)
kathy: my dad grew up with an osteopath as a family doctor... the whole family had tremendous respect for him.
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:16:47 PM)
sareysmom, my daughter is 10 yo. Her problem area is temporal processing. It takes her longer to get and process the message that kids her age. She also has a mild word finding problem and severe word ordering problem.
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:17:28 PM)
kmanbam...did you get all that information about your daughter from SUNY evaluation?
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:17:35 PM)
kathy: whereas a chiropractor mostly has the alignment & manipulation stuff, is not a medical doctor, cannot prescribe meds, but can prescribe xrays?
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:18:13 PM)
Kathy, yes we did. As I said...they were wonderful and thorough.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:19:05 PM)
kman: just what you would expect from that group, actually, since Dr. Katz from that group was one of the foundational researchers in capd.
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:19:17 PM)
Our daughter also has a severe hearing loss in her right ear, which they feel has caused the processing delays.
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:19:30 PM)
exactly - they have manipulation in school but my husband took a course from Viola Frymann (international guru who's about 80 and looks like grandma) and has used it several times in the ER (one lady had been to Dr 3x and ER 3x....given antibiotics and pain meds for ?sore tooth - he stuck his finger on a certain very tight ligament and she about went throught he roof..... I get OMT for TMJ and headache, which are mostly gone now.
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:19:33 PM)
exactly.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:20:32 PM)
kman: does she have any loss at all in her left ear?
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:20:56 PM)
Certain osteopaths also do accupuncture - i've also had which helped! (and I'm a pharmacist - so much for the pills)
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:21:14 PM)
Marge, not at this time, but she did 2 years ago. She has a sub-cutaneous tube in the left ear.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:21:56 PM)
kman: ahhhhh, so she likely had no usable hearing in her right ear 2 years ago, and fluid in the other ear.
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:22:42 PM)
that's right and it all started about 4-5 years ago.
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:22:59 PM)
It's been a long road.
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:23:15 PM)
have you seen improvement since the tube?
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:23:24 PM)
It does sound like you have been through a great deal!!!
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:24:38 PM)
There's been some improvement, but the delayed processing frustrates her.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:24:46 PM)
kman: there is a growing number of medical journal articles that describe the longrange consequences of auditory deprivation on brain development... it is thought to be one way you can wind up with CAPD. But with time & therapy, your daughter just may catch up. so that is encouraging... though I can empathize with the ear tubes, ear infections, etc etc
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:25:20 PM)
anyone using essential fatty acids?
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:25:25 PM)
kman: does she use a hearing aid on the right ear?
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:25:49 PM)
kathy: does fried chicken count :-) ???
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:25:52 PM)
Yes, she has hearing aid and FM microlink.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:26:08 PM)
kman: oh, that is top of the line, the microlink.
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:26:39 PM)
My daughter seems to have delayed processing too.
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:26:50 PM)
oh man! supposedly they help with apraxia. Drew's SLP is going to try a sound field (type of FM system at school) anyone with experience?
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:27:20 PM)
kathy: we have one school in our district that has fm in every classroom... other schools in district are working on getting it
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:27:28 PM)
She really wants an in the canal aid with zoom feature, but she has too much loss for that.
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:27:31 PM)
The teacher picked up on it. She can repeat back, verbatim, just what you said to her (and quikcly). But it seems to take a minute for the MEANING of it to sink in. Does this make sense?
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:27:43 PM)
no kidding!! where do you live marge?
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:27:57 PM)
kman: i use behind the ear aids myself... tell her the bigger the "box" for the hearing aid, the better the sound quality. really.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:28:04 PM)
kathy: metro atlanta
Beth (ID=21) (Oct 10, 2000 10:28:06 PM)
are your kids in regular classes?
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:28:23 PM)
She is so self conscious at this age though.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:28:25 PM)
sarey: i have heard of that kind of behavior before
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:28:33 PM)
kman: she is how old?
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:28:42 PM)
Drew is in a regular class with pull out 30 mins three times/wk...we need to see how that's going..
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:28:58 PM)
She is 10 year old and very conscious of her appearence.
Beth (ID=21) (Oct 10, 2000 10:29:43 PM)
my son is regular class - 97% with OT and Speech
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 10:30:14 PM)
Beth...same with my son.
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:30:15 PM)
I'm fading out, I'd better sign off. :)
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:30:19 PM)
kman: i see... well, you know, i see an awful lot of adults walking around with radios & cell phone headsets... so having some gizmo perched on your ear is a lot more common than it used to be... wonder if that would help
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:30:20 PM)
drew also gets speech one on one twice weekly x 20-30 mins.
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:30:21 PM)
gnite sarey
kathy (ID=19) (Oct 10, 2000 10:30:27 PM)
sleep tight
Marge (ID=14) (Oct 10, 2000 10:30:31 PM)
i better pack it in too... gnite all!
sareysmom (ID=12) (Oct 10, 2000 10:30:35 PM)
Goodnight :-)
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 10:30:38 PM)
Nite...
kmanbam (ID=13) (Oct 10, 2000 10:30:45 PM)
Our school just put sound augmentation systems in all the rooms. Educational audiologist has been in the check for resonnance, etc. so they are set to go.
Deb (ID=16) (Oct 10, 2000 10:30:48 PM)
