debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 8:33:10 AM)
Good morning Dr J!! I am doing great..How about yourself?
debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 8:34:27 AM)
Yesterday in the mail I did receive your's and Ann's memberships.
dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 8:34:55 AM)
Doing great too. Still trying to fight off the ends of a cold or something.
debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 8:35:33 AM)
Is security on campus getting any better?
dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 8:35:37 AM)
I'm glad you got our membership and dues.
debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 8:36:55 AM)
I hope you are feeling better soon. It can be very annoying when a cold just kind of lingers and hangs on.
dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 8:38:07 AM)
Yes. As of Monday (yesterday), they lightened up a great deal. They opened a second entrance (a side entrance right near one of the major parking lots) and they check, now, only to see that you have a valid Gallaudet University Parking permit and if they recognize you (sort of). They only check to see ID if there's a question of identity. BUt, they no longer ask you to state (sign) your name, social security number, dept. and phone extension (if you're faculty or staff). It was all of the other things that really SLOWED everything down.

Well, you seem to be doing just great Sissy. Now, you did drop off your entrance fee payable in cash mailed directly to me for $100 right ? ;-)
CAPD
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 216.77.146.89 )
well dr j is a wonderful source of information on capd...sometimes he gets a bit confused about mailing cash though! *L*
good morning PSL!
Good morning
is this Patti by chance?
Debbie. Yes, now it's just pull up and zip in. If there's a question about a car infront, they pull it to the side and another security office checks it out so it won't hold up the rest of the traffice behind, especially in the am and around 4-5pm when everyone begins their homeward bound journey's except we few with evening classes ;-)
Yep
Good to see you Patti! Have you met Dr J before?
Good moring PSL. (Sounds like a test we'd use for evaluating APD ;-) )
No, I''ve not had the pleasure. Good morning Dr. J
Hello Patti. No, I don't think we've met before.
PSL, Dr J has been of great help with the support group and the NCAPD.
Are you in Jacksonville, Patti (or should I say PSL)?
And, if you don't mind my asking, Sissy, where are you located?
I have my own practice on Amelia Island (north east Florida) and have a GREAT interest in CAPD.
Dr J, PSL originally dx Sarah back in 1998 with CAPD.
south carolina
Well, then, Sissy, we should be saying "'Morning, y'all" make you feel at home. ;-)
PSL...How is your practice going? I hope very well.
i'm a parent of a child with CAPD
Better than I expected, but I don''t know what to expect! I'm enjoying not driving to Jax every day!
trying to learn all I can about CAPD
Welcome, Sissy
Sissy, one of the things we do at this interactive chat is leave it open for parents, like you, to ask questions. SO, please if there are any questions you have, feel free to ask.
THANK you
i have many questions, been searching the internet
still learning
PSL, were you originally in Jax and now moved to Amelia Island?
am i chatting will all Dr.s
Sissy, Don't feel alone. No Dr. J, I have always lived on Amelia; just commuted to Nemours Children's Clinic for six years.
Yes, Sissy. I think you will find there is an overwhelming amount of information about what people call auditory processing and CAPD on the internet.
yes, dr. j I have discovered that
Sissy, I am an audiologist.
I like your ICON PSL. Sort of the redheaded Marilyn Monroe look ;-)
Well, I didn't want to have too many smiley faces - makes for confusion. Actually, I'm blonde!
I have an 11 yr. daughter who was diagnosed with CAPD at the end of her 4th grade yr.
she is now in 6th grade
having difficulties with reading
Sissy, my daughter is 9 in 4th grade..she was dx 2 1/2 years ago by PSL
been trying to find out how CAPD effects reading
Sissy, what treatment programs have you used?
none outside of school
she is equipped with a FM Trainer
sorry everyone..had a quick phone call...
Sissy, did your professionals (audiologists, SLPs, etc.) every tell you what specific area, type of problem, or such identifier they used to explain what TYPE of auditory processing problem your daughter has?
i believe it is decoding
i have the report in front of me
it's auditory closure/decoding
Well, do you know about the basics of reading? One of the first steps in reading is decoding. So, if your daughter has a decoding problem, then, she has problems reading that may be related to the difficulties in auditory decoding.
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 172.129.43.95 )
Sissy, what services and what goals have been provided and are BEING provided for your daughter?
my daughter can read very good reader
Hi Michelle
good morning Michelle
hello
she has difficulty with comprehension
the only services that are provided right now are through her school
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 172.146.142.143 )
hi cher
Sissy, you say your daughter can read, but has problems with comprehension. What specifically is your concern or are your concerns about your daughter?
Hi
Good moring Cher and Michelle
Good morning Cher
Good morning Cher
good morning dr. j
Hi, everyone. Topic?
concerns with her difficulties in reading comprehension
Cher, the topic is just a general review of some questions/concerns that Sissy has about her daughter.
she seems to comprehend better reading out loud than silently to her self
it took awhile for my son to get the letters down right....we were concerned that he was dislexic
interesting. My daughter has same problem with comprehension
I am wondering what more can be done to further help her
Michell, how old is your son?
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 172.133.171.156 )
he is just turnig 7
Hi Jonathan
Good morning Jonathan!
hi jonathan
Hi
Sissy, have you tried any outside programs?
no
not at this time
have you gotten in touch with the IST
I sent my daughter to a program offered by the Institute of Reading Development
It had some good ideas -- such as stopping after a paragraph and summarizing what was read
What type of reading program is your child involved with in school? Does she receive extra help in reading?
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 204.157.27.124 )
Good morning Kelli
hello kelli
Hi Kelli
Hi all!
I just received a report from her teacher, she is reading a 5.3 grade level.
I must go....my 2 yr old needs me...hope to chat tonight
she has currently been recommend for an after school tutorial program starting Oct. 30
Just trying to gather some info. Both my son and myself have CAPD (so I assume). No specific dx made yet. Anyone know of the best place in NYC to get tested?
What grade is she in?
bye Michelle.there is a parent chat tonight at 9 pm EST
6th
THis sounds like my daughter -- she is six month behind
thanks bye
i trying to learn what more can be done to further help
Sissy, does she do better when the subject interests her?
Jonathan on the website for the NCAPD at www.ncapd.org there is a list of audiologist who test for CAPD. I am pretty sure there are referrals for NYC. Have you checked it out yet?
yes
No, not yet
We started Earobics recently (step 1 for my 4 yr old and step 2 for my 9 yr old). My 9 yr old is pretty bored with it. Will it get more challenging?
Sissy one thing that we have tried with Sarah is reviewing the story together, mapping out what has happened in the story and then trying to predict what may happen next.
yes, that should help
I don't just want anyone . I want to know who is the best source for testing and for getting help. I don't want my son to go through what I did my whole life
brb
Jonathan, do you have a hearing institute in your area?
my mind is going in a thousand ways. so please bear with me
That's very understandable.
cher are you a parent
it's ok Sissy...take your time...capd can be very overwhelming and hard to understand
thank you debbie
yes. I have 2 daughters ... one 10 (with APD) and a 16 y.o.
i so excited because I have someone to talk to about this
Debbie --- is NCAPD tax deductable yet?
My wife has found two possible places. I believe they are Mt Sinai and one other (oops there goes my APD popping up again)
I was very fortunate to finally meet an audiologist who listened to me and believed me when I thought there was something wrong with Sarah and did the apd testing.
Cher, no not yet. It taking time to get the info together to do the paperwork, but we are working on it.
We went through two rounds of testing before I got the answers I needed
More professionals should LISTEN to more parents!
cher, is it your story about sarah that I read online
Thank you PSL!
No.
Our two children with APD had pretty severe receptive and expressive speech delays, so we didn't have to fight to get further testing.
Sarah is Debbie's daughter
The story about Sarah online is my daughter Sissy.
i just read it
this morning
it sounded so much like my daughter
but, it ended
Sissy, have you joined the listserv yet?
PSL is the audiologist who finally listened to me when I took Sarah for evaluation
I found the most information and support from the list.
Sissy, that is what is so great about the listserv. Other parents who know what you are going through.
at the point where it talked more about my dauther
cher, what is listserv
sissy the story will be completed, I've been taking time to work on other projects such as the chat and the NCAPD. I found it hard to sit and write about what we've been through with Sarah, brought up alot of very strong emotions
understand
debbie, I understand. It is a never ending saga.
Dr. J. has set up a bulletin-board type of list. E-mail messages are posted for all to read and repond.
feeling that way now
You can join it through the same web-site
ok thank you
Sissy the listserv is run by Dr J. There are two lists, one for parents and one for professionals. There are approximately over 630 parents on the list currently so there are always wonderful ideas from dr j, other professionals and from parents on ways to deal with capd
ok, thank you
Jonathan, if you dont mind me asking. how long ago were you dx with capd?
who is Dr. J
Dr J is in the chat with us now, but he had to step away for a moment, not sure if he's back with us yet or not......he is an audiologist from Galludet University who is very knowledgable on CAPD. He's dedicated alot of time to helping parents.
awesome
Does anyone know whether a car accident can make someone who already has ADP have symptoms that worsen?
I never was I always knew something wrong, never fit in. My wife and I came up with an idea about a "processing" disorder before I had any solid info. Then about a year ago we got something in the mail from a friend that got it off the internet and we went AHA!
Kelli --- was there a head injury involved?
sorry I'm back
Jonathan, if you mind me asking questions, please let me know, what type of things do you currently do to cope with your capd?
Kelli, I'm following up on your car accident question. If you don't mind sharing, what type of head injury is involved (if any)?
Yes there was a head injury
I guess Ive just learned over the years to try to focus more on people that are talking. In groups I sometimes tell people that if they want to talk to me to call my name
My brother-in-law was in a car accident. His short term memory (especially auditory in nature) was affected.
the audiologist report on my daughter Daniela recommends compensatory strategies,
He states that background noise has always bothered him but is now much worse.
what does this mean?
Sissy, I think these are things that can help her to cope
the evironmental modifications have been made in the classroom
Compensatory strategies are things we do to make life easier. For example, if we know we have trouble remembering the grocery list, we write it down or say it over and over to ourselves.
He always struggled in school but is not dumb. He never graduated. His wife says that when I describe my children, I am describing him as well.
Does anyone know if there is any research being done to find a CURE?
it states to overcome residual dysfunction
FOr all, since processing is something that is done by the brain or central nervous system.....ANY injury to the brain or Central Nervous System can affect the functioning of that system, thus, can affect processing.
with all our brilliant doctors someones got to be able to figure out something
Dr j, his head was hit mostly on the left side. Both ears were black after the accident. His front also hit the windshield. He broke the seatbelt right out of the vehicle.
Jonathan, a good question about a CURE. But, since auditory processing is not a disease, there can not be a cure. Auditory processing is merely a label used as a descriptor for behaviors.
what should be done to help her develop compensatory strategies
Sissy, she has probably already developed some of her own. My daughter taught herself to lip read.
I se your point, but I dont accept that there is no possible cure. Ther is a reason for the
Jonathan there is research being done is the are of apd's but before we can effectively find a "cure" we first have to understand what causes apd's I dont think there would be a "cure" but there will be strategies to help people cope and overcome
can the speech/language therapist at school be of help?
Sissy, you need to know which auditory skill areas she has difficulty with and focus the strategies on that particular area.
Jonathan, these brilliant doctors (as you call them) still do not have any agreement on what is and what is NOT APD. We have many ideas, many approaches, many descriptions of what is or what may be APD. We are far from understanding this group of disorders because there is no consensus on what it is.
PSL, can you list the areas for Sissy?
the difficulty is auditory closure(decoding) deficit
What about the ASHA article published in'96. It seemed to outline what the condition is
Gotta go. Good luck to alll. Sissy, join the list. It will help.
ok, thank you
Some of the skill areas may include auditory memory, phonemic awareness, auditory closure, binaural integration and separation skills, sequencing, etc. From my understanding, difficulty with closure skills may relate to a child's inability to learn plurals or word endings, etc.
Jonathan, and others, if there were a behavior like "walking funny" and we had NO IDEA of WHY people who had the "walking funny" problem walked funny? How could there be a "cure" when no one knows why people with "walking funny" disorder walk funny (please this is NOT a put down, but I couldn't think of another analogy.
Sissy, it is important that your SPL is familiar with APD. Ours is and is working in the classroom with our 9 yr old to help him develop organizational skills etc. He needs to recognize when the teacher is going to teach so he can be ready to "listen".
Kelli, what you describe is often refered to as "set to attend" not organizational skills. Set to attend is a critical skill for success in many areas such as education.
Good description, Dr. J.
Kelli, what is SPL/?
He currently sees that his teacher is talking about a subject and then starts digging out his pencil, paper and book. He cannot listen and do these things at the same time and misses part of the instructions as a result. Thank you Dr J.
Sissy, Speech Language Pathologist
Debbie, Is that right?
SLP not SPL
Kelli, not too sure how much the SLP in the school knows about CAPD
good example kelli
this is all new to me
Sissy that is why we are here to try and help =)
Consider the following. About 100 years ago, a soldier is wounded. A bullet goes through the soldier's leg. The "cure!" Cut off his leg or gangreen
thank you debbie
Sissy, you have come to the right place and spending time with people who know and want to learn more.
i will be having a conference in the school soon, and I wanted to know what they have to further aid Daniela with her compensatory strategies, and who is the one who can best assist her.
The teachers involvement and knowledge is also important. Our son's weakness is reading comprehension. Our teacher is aware of this and has him correct his work in this area. She gives him the average of the two grades as an incentive.
Many teachers have no idea what APD is, let alone how to deal with children who may have it!!
Sissy you can ask PSL about when I first met her and we talked about CAPD, I had absolutely no clue!! This is a learning process we go through to help our kids. There will always be more and more questions, but as you learn you'll begin to understand and when you look back you'll think "now I understand why that happened or why she said that"
kelli, reading comp is a big problem for my daughter
I have copied handouts to give to any teacher involved with my APD children.
debbie, i will talk to the psl
Sissy, don't feel overwhelmed. It IS overwhelming. That's why we are here and we've set up the CAPD list and this and other chats to help support and help you and other parents understand and be better advocates for your children. There are also adult support systems. and there is a National Coalition on Auditory Processing Disorders or NCAPD set up by our debbie who is here on this chat who runs, hosts, and pays for this chat herself and has her website CAPD from the Heart of a Mother.
Kelli, that's great! I encourage parents to do just that and often provide them.
Sissy, I homeschooled this subject during the summer months with my son. I also did a literature program with my younger girls called Five in a Row.
Sissy, do you have an e-mail address?
thank you dr. j, i just discovered this chat group late last night
yes, it's JaMex@bellsouth.net
That's great, Sissy. I hope you will find support, assistance and gain a better understanding.
Thanks Sissy. You can reach me at ears2u@mail.com
BTW, I know I had to leave (sorry) for a bit and never got to give my response on the reading comprehension issue. .....
I said earlier, how excited i was too finally be able to chat with someone about capd
thanks all for your interest in helping your own and other kids (and some adults) Got to go now, boss will be in soon God bless you all
the NCAPD is currently working on brochures that you can take to your school and teachers. Hopefully when we get these completed they will be of great benefit to parents in helping educators understand how to help our kids
good by Jonathan! please come back soon
by Dr. j nice meeting you
I'll try
Comprehension as with reading decoding can be due to many different reasons. As with all problems related to processing of verbal information it is important to get a proper and thorough evaluation of auditory processing and language processing.
Bye Sissy. Hope to hear from you again either here at another chat or on the CAPD list.
One of my daycare children is late and I'm afraid they might be trying to call. I had better go and clear the phone line. Take care everyone.
bye Kelli! Have a great day
Bye, Kelli.
Sissy, every Tuesday night at 9 pm EST there is a parent chat in here too. It's really a good time to talk to other parents who do UNDERSTAND!
yes, I saw that in the website
i'll will do my best to be online with it tonight
my daughter was diagnosed at the end of 4th grade
From my experience, everyone associated with APD (parents, professionals, etc.) are very helpful and want to provide as much information as possible to those with questions.
I'm sorry if i missed it when you said earlier, what grade is she in now?
6th
but I didn't know anything about CAPD during her 5th grade year
she basically had a bad year
is your daughter on an IEP?
she has a 504
Sissy, now that you are learning about APD, a lot of things are starting to make sense about your daughter during 5th grade.
my daughter has a 504 also
yes, psl
Sorry to hear that. It happens. Sometimes the teachers/school, etc. are really great and provide the help and support in one grade and then little or nothing happens in another grade. (It's like life. It has it's ups and downs). But you're on top of it now.
the class that she was in, was not a good learning environment for her at all
teacher was not supportive by no means
now she does have two teachers who are using the fm trainer consistently
Sounds like she needs to be educated about APD
Does Daniela enjoy the FM trainer? Use it regularly?
yes, very much so psl
Daniela has a great attitude about using the trainer, and yes she does use it regularly
Sissy, it's good to know you have a contract with the school. Remember, the 504 is not merely a plan but it is a contract between the school and you (as advocate/parent of your daughter) that the school is responsible to provide the accommodations in the 504 for your daughter. Remember it is there responsibility. But, you have to be on top of them to be sure they live up to their contract.
Debbie, does Sarah still use the FM?
Sissy, my daughter uses an FM in classes and has for about a year, she's really starting to be able to tell the difference betweeen what she understand with and with out the FM
yes, you're absolutely righ dr. j. I realize i am my child's only advocate
good new, debbie
news
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 208.199.21.97 )
PSL, Sarah has commented lately about how happy she is that she has her FM and how much it helps her. She only uses it in school.
Hello, Dorien
hey dorien!! How are you this am?
Hi everyone
daniela, only uses it in school too
daniela, is very gifted in music
Just got back from the school
In my opinion, school is the CRITICAl place to use the FM
this is what is so astounding
yes, you're right psl
Sissy, that's great. One thing you do have to realize, I hope you realize this. An FM auditory trainer is a misnomer. It is not a trainer. It is an FM broadcast system. That is, it merely broadcasts the voice of the person using the microphone to a receiver worn by your daughter. SInce the person using the mic has his/her voice only a few inches from the mic, the speaker's voice will be louder than any other sounds in the environment when heard via the earphones or what ever way your daughter hears via the FM system.
A few weeks ago during the sunday night children's church Sarah told me she was having trouble understanding the teacher so she asked the teacher if she could move closer since she was having trouble understanding due to her capd. To me that was a huge step for her to really recognize when she was in the situation how to put herself in a better sitation to understand.
How did it go Dorien?
I try to encourage children (and parents) to OWN their APD. Let people know and MOST people will understand.
dr. j, daniela has said how much the fm trainer does help her.
As well as always the school seems to think that Fast fward may not help Tricia as she does read well
Also, just note, and this is important to understand as well. AN FM system will NOT train your daughter to do anything related to comprehension. SO, the use of the FM system in and of itself will have NO affect on reading or even listening comprehension. Definitely it has no impact on reading comprehension. Listening comprehension MAY improve ONLY becasue the child does not have a listening comprehension problem, but listening was problematic because of poor access to the teacher's vocie.
What is your next step Dorien?
thank you. dr. j
I will show then how this can help her.
Good morning Dorien. I just realized you've joined us. If I may jump in on what you said. Fast ForWord is NOT a program based on developing anything to do with reading. There is NO research to support that FFWD has as it's primary aim improving reading.
Dorien, if you don't mind my asking. WHy are you asking the school to provide FFWD for your daughter?
She has problems with working memory
I was told that this could help improve some of this
debbie, i do work with Daniela on saturdays with reading comprehension
dr. j. do you think the use of auditory books could help with reading comp?
I think it's very important for every one to understand there is no ONE right thing to do for a child with capd...each child is different and may have different factors causing the processing problem. With each child having the different underlying factors, each child may need different solutions.
Dorien, FFWD is not a program based on improving working memory either. Actually, FFWD provides NO time factors (one of the critiques of this program that is an outgrowth of a project on FFWD I have just completed with two other colleagues). There are much better ways to help working memory than FFWD. First, though, you have to identify the underlying factor accounting for the problems with working memory.
what type of things do you do sissy?
to help her?
How can I help her
yes, when you are working on comprehension
Sissy, re: auditory books. The underlying factor (as you may always hear me say) is WHat is the underlying reason for Daniela having problems with auditory comprehension? Until this underlying factor is identified, I would have NO suggestions to provide.
Dorien. Need to identify the underlying factor accounting for working memory problems. Then, you target the underlying factor. For example, in order to use working memory these are some of the processes involved.....
what do you recommend be done, to help exactly identify the problem.
Dr.j is there a way to have a child tested for capd at the age of 5
debbie, I have her do read and thinks skills, we read together and I ask her questions for comprehension.
I'm going to give an example of what dr j is saying with a problem other than capd.......I have a nephew who has been going to the dr for over 6 months complaining of headaches....the drs have talked to him and offered a few solutions but they did not work....one night about 5 weeks ago my nephew ended up in the emergency room with another massive headache. The next day they removed a tumor the size of a golf ball from his brain. His headaches have gone away. Why didnt the things the other doctors try work? they didnt know the cause of the headaches!
First, you have to be able to get the relevant information into the working memory store (so, we have to identify if this is an area of problem). Then, you have to tag or label that information so that it can be manipulated in working memory which may be more of a language and familiarity factor than an auditory factor. Then, you have to hold the information in working memory (we often consider this pneumonics
Oh, Debbie. I hope he's ok. WHen I read your post, I was really shocked. I just hope he's ok. My prayers are for him and his family.
He's doing remarkably well now that they found the cause of the headaches and removed it.
The whole point was they had to find the cause of the problem in order to fix it. To find the problem it involved him giving the dr enough information and the dr asking the right questions to know what to look for.
Dorien, your question about testing for an auditory processing problem at age 5 years. Yes. Auditory processing can be tested at age 5 years. However, you will have to find an audiologist who feels comfortatble, and is knowledgeable in understanding auditory process development and listening development to evaluate and interpret test results for children age 5 years. Recently, (only this past weekend) I completed the reports on two children I evaluated for auditory processing under age 5 years. One was age 4 years 3 months and the other was just 4 years old one week before the date of evaluation.
Thanks to everybody for a good chat this morning. I have to go. Have a great day!
Take care Patti, Hope to chat with you soon!
I will have to see if I can find someone to test my son. Thanks Dr.J
bye, psl, nice meeting you.
Debbie, you are right. All too often, professionals do not know how to ask the right questions, or, worse, they do not know how to observe and listen. As parents and as people (laymen) we often do not know how to provide the right information. For example, saying "I have a headache" or "My head hurts" is correct for a laymen while the doctor needs to know many other factors to identify what to look for.
Debbie, please if you see PSL again, tell her I wanted to say it was really nice to meet her (at this chat anyway). I hope she'll be more active .
Have to go to work.
Dr J I will be sure to pass on the message.
Dorien it was good to see you!! I hope you have a great day
Dorien, I hope you can find someone to test your child at age 5 years. Email me if you have any other questions.
jay.lucker@gallaudet.edu
PSL has popped in on a few of the evening chats too. That's why I recognized the initials when she came in
Well, Sissy. I would expect that this chat may have been overwhelming at times. But, it was great to have you join. I hope you'll be more active. And, I hope that some of your questions were answered, or that you gained some new insights and information.
Debbie, I don't know if she's on the CAPD list or the professional one ???
dr. j it has been a big help to me
I've been writing questions as they come to me.
I"m not sure Dr J if she is on the list or not. I know she's on thelist for my site
Sissy I really do recommend you join the listserv by dr J (maybe he can provide the address). It's sooooooooo helpful!
Sissy, great. Now you can ask some of those questions to other professionals or other parents and sound them out and soon you'll be the expert in APD in your area of S.C.
Sissy what area of SC are you in? there is a great speech hearing clinic in charleston that is familiar with capd
thanks dr. j
i'm in the summerville, not far from charleston
I know where summerville is, i use to live up in n charleston
oh really
whereabouts
debbie, did you say you are an audiologist?
no I"m not an audiologist,, i'm a parent of a child with capd who's been struggling to learn too
that's why i do understand how overwhelming and frustrating it can be
ok
Sissy and Debbie, I'm not cutting in, But, I have to prepare for a class. Sissy, again, it was great to meet you and I hope to see you again. Debbie. Have a great week and I'll speak with you a week from Thursday (not this but next week). Have a great week.
the clinic is in charleston i can get you the info if you like
nice, meeting you dr. j, hope to see you again too.

it was my daughter's school that diagnosed the CAPD, our family dr. is still not aware of it
should I make him aware also
my pediatrician was not familiar wiht capd either....by all means yes!!
have it included in her medical record...
I will do just that
i been thinking it was something i need to do
give eva a call and talk to her if you need help...ask what services they provide or recommend.....if you cant see eva talk to anyone there...
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 209.83.211.92 )
hi gplpn how are you today?
i will do that
tell eva i said hi =)
ok
i really hope you got a few answers today..not just more questions
Im her e to see what i can find out about capd
I was mainly wanting to what more can be done to further help Daniela
My 10 year old was diagnosed in April of this year and im very confused about what to do next
gplpn the audiologists that were in the chat just left unfortunately..... there is another scheduled chat tonight..is there any chance of you makin that chat.? It is tonight at 9pm EST
GPLPN we know exactly how you feel
educate yourself about CAPD
I normally would never leave if someone still had questions however I have a committment already scheduled that I have to keep. I will be in the chat tonight though.
I am education myself via the internet
bye debbi, it was nice meeting you.
Yes I can. Ive gotten alot of onfo from the web site but the teachers in our district act as if they really dont know much about it either
thanks for you help, would like to talk further with yo
another time
it was my pleasure sissy!! you can email me at capdfromtheheart@aol.com or catch me in the chat!!
thanks debbie
gplpn and sissy there is an email list that you can sign up for at the entry to the chat on www.angelfire.com/fl2/capd/chat.html that will notify you when chats are!
yes, i am signed up for that
great! bye bye for now
gplpn your right about teachers not knowing
my child was 10 when she was first diagnosed
been doing all I can to educate myself
this chat room has already been helpful,
just finding someone to talk with
Do you ever feel as thogh the teachers think of the capd as an excuse? My daughter was 10 also
an excuse for what
an excuse for not doing well in school
no, i think it's more that teachers are educated on capd
i should say are not
this is my first time in this chat room
how about for yo
what does your child struggle with
Ive found that our teachers are just not sure about the actual disorder and are just as confused as I am as a parent. I have never chatted either, Boy am i a terrible typer
our 5th grade teacher was no help
my child is in 6th grade now
and her teachers are really working hard with her
no telling what next year will bring
i now realize it's one year at a time
Marys main struggle is her reading skills. I held her back in !st grade not knowing she had this trouble
what grade is she in
reading comprehension is what Dan struggles with
She had speech trouble at first but I related it to her having 4 ear surgeries. She is in 4th grasde
I have learned ear problems can be why children develop CAPD
That is what I found out from one of the web sites
my child doesn't have a history of ear problems.
in fact very little ear infections ocurred during early infancy
Im a nurse and thought I knew it all boy I was wrong!!!!!1
that's okay
always something to learn
They say thatear infections can be a factor But are not always the cause Was you son premature?
it's my daughter who has capd, and no she was not premature. In fact always a healthy child.
she also reads well, but struggles with reading comp
i've learned capd effects the reading comp
still trying to learn what can be done to help her
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 209.83.211.42 )
My computer just kicked me off Sorry
that okay, can you hold while i check my voice mail. I've on line for awhile. talking to the experts early.
I feel so guilty about Marys capd, Do you ever feel like that?
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 216.79.218.25 )
I know its not my fault but it hurts to see her struggle so much, I wish I knew what to do to best help her.
i know exactly how you feel
your taking the first step, by educating yourself
i have learned CAPD is a learning disability
but that doesn't mean, our children are not intelligent
Im tryin to find out as much as i can and provide the teachers with the info Ive found
In fact my child is very intelligent
this CAPD just makes learning more difficult
She is very intelligent and very kind and sweet which is great qualities to have
same with my child
Thank god she has no other trouble like behavior trouble
this morning I sent a CAPD handout to the teacher via my daughter
same with my child no behavior problems.
Mary seems to be overwhelmed with really noisy enviroments does you child?
not so much overwhelmed, but Daniela is very easily distracted, so noisy environments are a big distraction to her, and effects her learning
does Mary where a fm trainer
i should say does mary wear a fm trainer
We went to the backstreet boys concert I thout it would bother her not that night !!!!
No she doesnt and our school has pods which are one big area divided into 4 classes which Ive found to be a horrible learning enviroment
oh definitely, that is not good for her. CAPD need to have a closed classroom
is she in public school
Yes
is that the only type of learning environment they have in the school
was it the school who diagnosed her with capd
its the only type they have in our school
She was diagnosed by an audiologist
yes i realize an audiologist, but through the school right
Yes the speech teacher recommed she have the test this april and i didnt get the progress report until after school was out last year so thi s year is the first we knew about the capd
did the audiologist recommend the use in the report for a fm trainer
i highly recommend the use of a fm trainer.
It has been a great help for my child
How can we get one?
it is available through the school district audiologist.
the audiologist wasnt even at her IEPmeeting
wow
sounds like you have to get the ball rolling yourself
by using the fm trainer, the teacher is mic and your child wears a headset, so she could hear the teacher directly into her ears.
that open classroom environment can not be good for her at all
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 209.83.211.77 )
Sorry dont know what is up with my internet provider
thats ok
I have about ten more mins. than i need to go
Back to the fm trainer I have to be an advocate for Mary Im calling the schhol today tofind out about one
I would also talk directly to the school districts audiologist
the school will be probably have to get in touch with the audiologist anyway.
did you get a report from the audiologist
Thanj you for the help Im will talk with them and find out about getting one for her. Yes I got the report
did it say anything about recommending the trainer
It didnt say
i would still ask the question
it was just a computer read out
my child's report was direct recommendations to help my child in the classroom
i'm not the expert on capd, but i do know the trainer has been a big help for my child
I will be phoning the district audiolist today THANKS
great, it was nice chatting.
Bye sissy enjoy your day
same to you. God bless you!
Thanks!!!!!!

How was the conference? Any good informatio?
n
Get out!!!!!!!! For what?
there is a town hall meeting with Bush....she wants me to bring the girls down..they want to go
I LOVE the new banner up at the top for the NCAPD by the way!
you'll have to ask Deb about the conference....what i heard was good but i missed part of it
thank you Deb.
That would be great for the girls to go to!
you dont think they would be bored?
Kathy, did you find an icon?
I looked but this is fine
The conference was very informative...they pretty much were speaking to the school, teachers, SLP's, OT's, etc...but gave them lots of info to think about, and take back to their schools...our only concern was, WILL THEY USE IT?!?!
being the chatmaster, mine automatically is saved......makes it easy for me and i figured the confused duck was a good look for me.
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 216.3.181.61 )
hi faith..how areyou tonight?
I don't know if they'd be bored...probably too much going on to let them get bored. How long is it supposed to be?
Hi Faith....
good, recovering from the long day yesterday
from 10:30 to 1...it's in sanford, this side of orlando
have some great news to tell the world. Today my daughter, who has been having difficulties with reading comp, came home from school so excited about passing her very first accelerated reader test. I have been on cloud nine. She is in the 6th grade and has never tried to take an accelerated reader test since 4th grade for the fear of failing.
Faith I felt very bad that I missed you yesterday....
Heck, go! Make a day of it...so what if they miss a day of school... when will they see something like this again? I'd say go for it...if you don't mind the drive...AGAIN!!!
Hi everyone
Sis...that is great!!!!!
Hi dinomum!
Tell your daughter we are proud of her!
Sis....AWESOME news!! Yippie for her!!!
hi dinomum
i sure will
congrats
she only missed on question
I was trying to watch for you, I was going to e-mail you that I was going but got sick last week
are you guys all on the capd list?
i spent 1 1/2 hours going 6 miles on I-4....ran a bit late!!
nope
Faith...did you like the confrence?
what capd list
there is a mailing list
yes i am on the listserv with dr j
yes, had a teacher with no special education background and she was bored to death
did register with listserv
yes that is the one
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 24.129.104.70 )
hey Tammy!
I will mail you tomarrow the info on the other conference
Hey Debbie!
Faith as much as i wish i could go to the conference there is no way
I am in Australia - do you guys only chat once a week?
Hi everybody.
Faith....that's too bad....it's the teachers who need to hear this info, so they can help to apply it in the classrooms with our children!
i am renewing my wedding vows on nov 18th and am so late
Hi ya Tammy!
we chat once a weekon tuesday night...and every other tuesday morning..
hi deb!
Hows things Tammy?
The tuesday morning one is 11pm my time and is too late
we are hoping to have some other chats eventually..but at this time its only tuesday night
yep, didn't see any of my sons ese teachers from lake county there
ladies, how can I find a local support group?
for CAPD
a friend of mine from australia is having her child tested for capd in onvember
Where do you live Faith? I'm in Ocala. My kids go to The Villages Charter Elem.
who?
copied a bunch of stuff for my sons middle school
Clermont
Not too bad...CJ's just getting over the chicken pox and Caty has surgery next week to have her tonsils removed. top that off with CJ's IEP meeting tomorrow morning and things are just great! (sorry it's been a long couple of days...)
she's not been in the chat...she's was just here visiting in the states
Not too far from me really. We were thinking of looking in Clermont for a place.
nice place and I you buy south Clermont you get to go to a charter school with inclusion
Tammy sorry to hear about the chicken pox!!!
next year they will have thru 6th grade hopefully 8th
They are getting things under way for the middle school. Jeff Miller is thinking right after the first of the year it will break ground.
actually, other than him sleeping all day and not having the energy to do his homework that wasn't too bad... the worst part was trying to keep him in the house and not letting him play.
Faith....it is an AWESOME school!!!! Did you read in the paper today that the school just won $300,000.00 fromthe golf tourny yesterday?!?!?!?!?! YEEEE-HAAA!!!!!!!!!
I work in pre-k there so I can keep up with whats going on, will like being able to keep closer track of my son when he gets down there
no, Chancellor
?
sorry, i must have missed something...what school are you talking about?
i'm new to this chat, hi kathy
Four Coner Chater School run by Chancellor
Hi Sis i was here last week but that was my ifrst time
charter schools are going up all over the place down here , 11 within the two years in the Orlando area
how old is your son faith?
The school Travis goes to in The Villages...the school just got a check for $300,000.00 from a golf tourny yesterday!!!
12
nice to have some one to talk with who can understand the difficulties having a child with capd
Are all your kids older or younger
Sis...you have come to the right place!!
debbie, did sarah bring home a progress report? cj's teacher sent a report home with cameron.
mine is four and has not been diagnosed yet
mine is 11
goes for a speech/lang. eval tomarrow
Travis is 8....dx when he was 5.
My daughter is 6 and was diagnosed at 3 because she had some major SID issues.
hopefully visual eval. sometime soon
SID?
having a hard time getting a referal from insurance company
I think my son also has some SID issues but he seems to be developing CAPD problems due to constant ear infections even though we are on our 3 set of grometes
isn't that always the case!!!
SID.....Sensory Intergration Disorder
yep
my son had some sid issues but seems to have gone away
Debbie.....how was the chat this AM?
can anyone tell me if there are any further test, other than the initial audiology test that diagnosed capd, that I should have done?
I did some testing with music therapy
It meant that I could quantify the delay of auditory and visual
how does that work?
my son has seemed to improve a lot over this summer
We had a SLP eval, phychology eleav., perdiatric neurologist also.
I think it was called a click test and apparently we are able to process stuff at 30-60
sorry..im back...had to walk penny out..she came to help me with things for the wedding
HI PENNYY!!!!!!! BYE PENNY!!!!!!
Tammy..no progress report yet...at midterm she was on a scholarship warning though..but she's doing better now
she said to tell you hi deb!
Debbie...did you give her the Fla. Kidcare info? Tell her HI next time you see her!! How was the chat this AM?
oops!!!!!
Deeeeeeeeebbie!!!!!!!!!
has anyone else done this type of test?
Sarah's original audiologist joined the chat this am...
i'msorry Deb!!!!
after yesterday you expect my brain to work today!
Also i have heard of the Bellcurve tapes and books doeas anyone have them?
Do you still have it? If not, I'll get it for you. Ok...I'll let you off this time!
They are quiet expensive here because of the currency rates
never heard of them dinomum
i still have the info deb
Oke-dokey!
no, not me. cj goes back to his pediatrician on the 31st. she is (hopefully) going to give us a referral for a speech and language evaluation and a neurological eval too. he's already had the psychological eval done.
what does the neurological evaluation show
we meet the neurologist Monday what should we ask about?
we've not seen a neurologist so im not sure about that kathy
Who was Sarah's initial aud.? Dr. M?
I have a question... Does anyone have experience with sending their child to a special private school over the traditional public school? Do they work better for CAPD kids?
no Patti Shelly-Lohman at Amelia Island
we are in public schools
how can i find a local support group via the internet
I'm sorry I missed this AM...I bet it was great too! =(
it was a good chat.
we are in public also, but have a very good principal
to be quite honest with you, i'm not sure what it's for other than to test for other problems. however, cj had some other things going on and his school child study team, as well as others i've talked too, have all recommended neurological eval.
Sis have you signed up for the Be-A-Friend Program through the NCAPD? We are working on teaming up individuals in different areas.........program is just getting underway
Can I check the archives in a month to check on it?!?! *L* ONLY KIDDING!!!
he had an ese child ,so he was very happy to help us change the 1 problem teacher
no debbie
if i could stick my tongue out at you deb i would *LOL*....
debbie, will it cost me anything to join?
i tried to work on it today..i promise...give me til next monday ok? I promise i'll be caught up
*LOL*....I just had to throw it in...sorry!!!
will they do it internationally
Sis the membership is optional as a way to support the NCAPD, but youdo not have to be a member to join the Be-A_Friend program
And honest....just kidding!
dinomum if you submit a form and we find an individual YES we will try and match you up....
okk i will
debbie, what exactly is the Be a friend program?
Don't rush....WHEN you have time, THAT'S when you do it!
dinomum, where are you exactly?
Got any time, patience or tact for sale - I'm in short supply usually!!! LOL
the goal of the Be-A-Friend program is start pairing up individuals and hopefully add enough to start a small local support group...but we have to start somewhere!!
Sydney Australia
Deb if you wait til i have time you'll be in trouble! *L*
How do your husbands relate to these speacial kids?
*LOL*....like you have sooooooo much spare time, right?!
will be a friend program be able to tell me if there already is a local support group?
Sis we are not aware of any local support groups as of yet, but are looking to start some...
i'm very lucky dinomum...my husband is wonderful and very supportive
thank you, debbie
mine is too
clif is pretty good with him now...but when he was first diagnosed and before we finally realized what we were dealing with he was kind of hard on him.
mine is crazy about my son...
sis i am not saying there are not any groups yet..but we are not aware of them.....
Lucky you ... mine acknowledges its there but thinks i carry on and doesnt want to know to much as it is to scarey!
he often has more patience than I do
dinomum....my husband took a loooong while before he thought anything was 'really' wrong. But now, he's great! I think guys have a harder time accepting news like this...
clif loves cj but, because cj is the oldest, he expects alot out of him. he also thinks i baby him...
my husband use to try and help out with the chats when i was working..he's a blessing!!
It seems to me there are a lot of unanswered questions regarding CAPD in the medical field... Like what causes it, how to treat it, etc. I realize Debbie is trying to get it more widely known. How big a problem is CAPD.?
very true peggy
Maybe i'm being unfare to him but I find that he suffers from "kid overload" He has a preety stressful job and travels and works long hours. Its hard to come home to difficult children
I read an article that many ADD/ADHD children are misdiagnosed
Peggy there was a story on CBS evening news lately that interviewed Nancy Kraus....her stats showed that approximately 1/3 of all children with learning disabilities probably had and auditory processing problem
the problem these children have is actually CAPD?
I saw some article the other day that said 20%
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 208.199.21.185 )
clif is disabled and home all the time. however, he still has trouble (sometimes) with dealing with cj.
I know NW University was doing research... Have they published anything yet?
he hates repeating things!!!!
this was a huge statistic!!!! and i think it went along ways to helping promote apd.
My daughter has an ADD diagnosis but the primary problem is the SID and the biggest problem now in it is the CAPD
There are several universities doing research on capd at this time...dr moncrieff at the u of f is also doing research
But, he has to remember, they are his children too. We Moms have stressful days, everyday too...we're usually the ones who are with the kids most of the time, help w/ the homework, cook the dinner, do the laundry, and most of us work a 'real job' on top of all that and more, too!
Who is Nancy Kraus?
your absolutely right deb
How is Dr. Moncrieff's research going?
we had a problem getting anyone to do any further testing on Brendon Finally went to the insurance company
does he have a web page?
Nancy Kraus is an audiologist who's done extensive reserach on capd..i believe in NY..but dont hold me to that part
dr moncrieff is working on her research now....not sure how far she is from publishing anything yet.....she is on the board of directors for the NCAPD
can anyone tell me if there are any other test I should pursue having done for my child who has capd?
Women can handle more on our plates then men can...they tend to shun the 'bad stuff' away...don't know how, or want to know how to deal w/ tough situations. A lot of it is denial too. And that can linger for a looong time...unfortunately! =(
Dinomum, my son was thought to have ADD at first, now they say it's CAPD. We keep working....
hey Dorien..didnt see you sneak in
Hi Debbie how are you tonight
Debbie, Can you keep us posted about her research...
Sis that will really depend on what tests were done the first time and how long ago they were done..
I was lucky - I had hte CAPD diagnosis 1st and then when we couldnt make any progress where we thought we ought to we ended up with the other
sorry, but i'm going to have to go. good night all!
yes i will peggy..im in touch with dr m on a regular basis
Thanks.
night tammy
Debbie do you know of any dr that test young children
oops
Night Tammy....
how young?
he is 5
Dr. M will test my son at age 4 yrs one week
that is in NY
Sorry Fla
i am pretty sure dr ferre does but she is not in your area
DEbbie isnt DR. J in NY
Not to many good placed
debbie, the only test done thus far is the intial audiologist test. That was done in May 99.
Dr J is originally from NY but currently is in Washington DC
he does have a colleague in NY though..let me get her name
good evening from Australia thanks for your help
Good luck
My son's CAPD sometimes seems like Dyslexia. Lots of reversals, etc. Anyone else notice this?
good night
good evening dinomum.....i'll be in touch!
thanks

Peggy we've not had that type of trouble
Thanks Debbie I will call her to see.
please let her know you got her name onthe ncapd site...if you dont mine
mind
What recommendations did the aud make when that testing was done in may 99?
My son Michael's teacher told me that he just will not do what she wants him to do. I told her to have him to look at her when she talks to him
I will let her know Debbie.

hi beth..hi karen
I know I have just given one of my mothers some info on CAPD
Hello
hi
Hi Beth
hi, dorien
be right back ladies

who makes the suggestions as to remediation techniques and compensatory strategies, Sis?
I do my dtr Tricia
Debbie's daughter does.
Sis...my son does, and so does Debbie's daughter.
what is an fm trainer
kathy, the school district audiologist
deb, how long as he used one?
I'm working on getting Fastforward
our district does not recognise CAPd and their audiologist is not allowed to test for it...Will Dr. M?
Sis...he just started using it a few months ago...shortly after school started. His teacher and Travis, both thinks it helps.
kathy, a fm trainer is used by the teacher using a mic, and the child wearing a headset
how do we get one?
so the teacher can directly speak into the child's ears
throught your school district
How Expensive are fm trainers, and how old is your child deb?
no cost to us
Unfortunately, through the school distirict...sometimes NOT EASY !!!!
how is FastForward, are they doing it the same time as going to school?
That is what I am working on now
Travis is 8, and in 2nd grade....price depends on the one you get...
wow, deb
deb, did you have to buy one
dorien, are you going through the school?
Deb, is your son self conscious wearing one?
yes my Ins will not cover it now.
They also have individual headsets...which is actually what Travis uses...much cheaper, and we just bought it ourselves at Radio Shack...around $60.00 total I think.
Karen...no, not at all. He thinks it's pretty cool.
i see we are blessed, to have a school district provide us with one.
And the other kids don't bother him about it or tease him.
our shcool said it's a hour and half per day & can't do it during the regular school year
good night all
Sis...yes, you are blessed. Not everyone has a school district willing to put out the cash...
I just gave the school some info on it today but they are looking at the $$$
Night Faith....
Beth, My school isn't doing it yet. Some schools are... I am going to try to see if I can convince them to try it. Otherwise, I may have to do it in the summer.
Deb, has your son seen DR M
our school offers it but only in the summer breaks
Kathy....No...but he is going to see Dr. Hall at Shands next month...can't wait!!!!!
Do they have a lot of kids on the summer program Beth?
If I could get in any time without a fight I would jump on it
i'm back..sorry for delays
Do you think DrM will give us remediation ideas?
I'm concerned that using an fm trainer will allow my son to rely on an outside source, and he won't learn to focus himself. By the way, who is Dr. M?
Kathy...after results are in, she should be able to give some remediation ideas, right Debbie?
Dr M is Dr Deborah Moncrieff form the U of F in Gainesville..she is on the Board of Directors for the NCAPD...
i didn't know about until after we had already made vacation plans. his SLP would of put him in it but was too late
yes Kathy or is necessary she will refer you to an slp
we are going to year-round school so not sure how he can get it now.
Karen an Fm trainer is not for every child....it depends on what areas a child struggles in and you are right..you dont want the child to become dependent.
Fast forward is available in a home study format for under $100 The preschool version for one child is 49.00

Hi Pam.......
hi Pam..How are you tonigth?
Hi Everyone
hello, pam
Kathy, I wasnt aware of that... How do I get it?
Debbie I want you to know I was able to give one of my mothers info on CAPD and ADHD due to you.
I'm doing okay
Kathy, I've never heard of it being that low either
I found this website this weekend, I'm not sure, but it sounds like my daughter
Dorien that is fantastic!!!! *big smiles*....that's the way to create the public awareness that is needed....thank you for sharing the into with others Dorien
Pam, has your daughter been tested for capd yet?
no, I just talked with a psychologist on Monday about her, and her first instinct was CAPD
this was before I even mentioned it
did the psych recommend testing by an aud?
did everyone have their children tested through school or separately?
our testing was done privately both times
actually the first thing we are doing is a CAPD scan
i still can't get my son dx
Privately.......an another testing coming up next month.
Peggy, info@scilearn.comor www.scientificlearning.com
Privatly
what does everyone recommend?
my child was tested through school
it really depends on the district you are in ....
an audiologist as in hearing test? She had one last year when I thougth she had problems
Your insurance may cover private testing, call them.
Kathy, Thanks, I'll check it out.. :)
Good night all
good night Dorien!!
Night Dorien..
good to see you tonight
night!
someone recommended a speech pathologist, I know of many in my neighborhood alone, an acquaintance of mine is one, I'm going to call her
Pam, an audiologist will do a hearing test to rule out hearing problems, but is able to evaluate and diagnose capd
should that be my first step?
Yes...but MAKE SURE the audiologist you use is familar with CAPD!! Very important!!
I am a firm believer you really should see an audiologist...many of the tests for capd are done in a sound booth in order to properly test...
I apologize for all the questions, but am so confused about all this, I KNOW in my heart that there is something
lots of audiologist will not test for CAPD, the one i had wouldn't - just said my son had significant processing problems
Pam do not apologize!!! That's what this chat is for!!
Debbie's right Pam!!!We're all here to help each other!
now if they do indeed say she has CAPD, do they contact the school
Beth many audioloigsts are not familiar with the testing
How old is your child Pam?
We are all here fir help and insight
thanks everyone, I feel like outside of my husband I can't talk to anyone about this
Pam-A speech ther. can follow up with tx and can do in depth evals. in areas the audiologist has targeted as problems.
she will be 7 next month
Pam, it was my childs 4th grade teacher that recommend my child be tested
I had testing done by school 1st and am seeing an audiologist this comming Monday.
i know, been having a hard time to get someone to dx my son. with our ins, we have to go via primary care doctor and he told me to get a new doctor
I posted a huge (too long) message on the board, but noone's answered yet
she is extremely bright, no speech problems, but the focusing problem is very bad, it seems that the further in school the more we notice it
I would venture to think that a school audiologist should be able to test for CAPD, although i could be wrong!!
Her teacher does not know a lot about CAPD but everyone so far connected with the school has been wonderful and supportive
but only if you are in a district that allows it
Sis there are some tests that some school audiologists use...but not usually as comprehensive
Well all, I think I'm going to head out...have many hours of photo pages to do yet. Debbie...I will make another copy of T.'s school report we did, and get it out to you in the next couple of day...K?
been to a audiologist and neurologist and still don't have a clear dx - except developmently delayed
SIs, I'm going to say no on that, because she tested in school last year and being that everyone is aware of this now, they would have mentioned it
I am going to try to find an audiologist and start there in addition to getting the scan done next week
I know my school tested my daughter and found she has no problems in auditory processing..yet the audiologist report and school liscensed psychologist show differently
Good Luck Pam!!!
Is everyone's child pretty much unaware that there is a problem?
\thanks Peggy
My son knows he is different...
the scan is a good start..will let you know whether or not to persue the audiological eval
It hurts his self-esteem... :(
what kind of scan
my daughter is very aware....she knows it..but she thinks it is the way God made her special and unique
and she's very special =)
pam, my son (he's in 3rd grade) is beginning to be aware of his problem (had parent/teacher conference yesterday & she mentioned it too)
The SCAN is like a preliminary testing for capd.......indicates if further testing is warranted
My psychologist has some kind of auditory processing scan (a test) that they do in the office, all oral I believe. An associate of hers who deals specifically with our school district will administer it.
Travis is aware as well. Handles it pretty well, most of the time.
we feel the same way about our daughter, she is such a tremendous blessing to us.
Pam, I have been working of resolving my son's problem for the past year almost. We are not quite there yet.. Debbie's web site has been a great help to me. Just don't give up until you're satisfied you have the right help for your child. :)
We had ours last night. She is totally unaware. For instance, the teacher will give her instructions, she will do something different, when I ask her about it, if she has problems understanding, she is very clear and comfortable that there is no problem understanding. She does not need help in the classroom.
I was sharing in this mornings chat..that a few weeks ago Sarah was at church on sunday night in children's church and was having a hard time understanding ms. grace...so she raised her hand and asked if she could move closer since she was having trouble understanding due to her capd.......
my son seems to have problems in math, is this more common in CAPD kids?
good night all
good night Sis
I am glad in that respect that she is oblivious because it makes doing this all the more easier.
Time for me to go...Debbie...I'll make another copy of the school report and get it out in a few days.
I was so proud and happy that Sarah is beginning to see when she is having trouble and she self corrected the situation...
She is a great kid, very happy, outgoing, very active
Deb thank you!!! have a great night
How long has it taken her to get where she is Debbie?
Good night Deb, thanks
she was diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago....
Will talk to you soon Debbie! HAD A GREAT TIME YESTERDAY!!!!!
I did too!!!!!
Does she attend special classes in school?
Tell your mom hi for me!
no..she is in regular class.......
Will do....e-mail her....she's waiting to hear from you.
no extra or special help at all?
do CAPD kids have more problems in math?
my psychologist also mentioned the possibility of medication, this makes me nervous.
Sarah and I talk alot about her capd...you have to realize that capd has become almost a way of life for us...with her modifications in school and the website and nonprofit..it's changed our life alot
Beth..that depends on the type of deficits the child has...sarah is very sharp at math
Beth, from the stuff I read, reading and math are two of the subjects they have a hard time with.
will do Deb..i promise!
Pam I have never heard of medication being effective with capd..be cautious..
my son didn't have any trouble w/reading (some mistakes due to visual processing) but math has been very hard for him
Hey Debbie, you are helping to change a lot of other lives for the better with this site and chat. :)
Pam, sarah recieves some modifications on a 504 plan..most of her help is at home
oh I am, she wouldn't be prescribing anyway, but I'm just starting to gather info about all of this.
pam, could they be suggesting ADD or ADHD (i know, my school district mentioned it)
Peggy..thank you...that's what it's all about!
Your site was the first site I found I can't thank you enough
Me too.
Pam...Tarvis takes ritalin...have tried him on and off for a few years...really seems to make a big difference with him, when he's on it... and they totally ruled out ADD/ADHD.
Beth, it's been mentioned briefly but she's still very young to be diagnosed. Also her teacher says that she doesn't see anything that would indicate ADD or ADHD but admits that she is not an expert. This is all based on her experience
I know many of those who coem to the chat are aware of why i started the chat..but for those of you who aren't...i spent 1 1/2 years looking for another parent of a child with capd......when i started this site it was to keep info for me..i never dreamt there were so many people who had the same problem...
Debbie, since you know so much about capd, i was wondering if you know any kids who have "outgrown" their capd. I read that 60% of children dx with capd, outgrow it.
it's amazng isn't it
Believe me....I am not an advocate for meds...but, I've seen what he does, and doesn't do when he's on...
karen, wow - i've never heard that. would be great to think that could happen
Well it is late here I stopped by on a chance, thank you all so much. Are you all pretty much here every Tuesday?
Karen, personally i dont know any....but i've heard the same statistics....
every tuesday Pam!!
I will be back, at least I have a place to start which is something. Thanks again
Night Pam...ok....I'm REALLY going now!!
Take care Pam.
Good night all.
I have every confidence inthe world that Sarah will overcome her capd!
goodnight Pam
Bye Deb...
Is there a chat scheduled with Dr. J in the near future?
bye Deb
from what i've read of LD's, i'm sure my son has more than CADP
Deb, im not sure if dr j will be in next week..i think it will be two weeks since he was in today...
Is it true that CAPD can exist with other LD's and ADD/HD...
oops,.,that was for you Karen
yes peggy...
What day and time does he come?
often capd can be the underlying factor for other ld's
he's here every other tuesday from 8:30 to 10 am EST
morning chats.
It can be really confusing.... Trying to figure out whas exactly is a childs problem.
are auditory and visual processing problems together lots of times?
EXTREMELY confusing!
Beth they are two seperate problems that can coincide
I hope the people doing research will soon come up with some good answers.
I am surprised they don't have any yet.
yes, I was told to have my son's eyes examined by a pediatric oopthmalogist
so do i Peggy...the problem is getting the professionals to agree what is and what isnt' capd...
i feel my son has both but hard to get any dx so far. he goes to speech and OT (has since he was 3/4yrs old and he's 9 now)
Does Dr. M have any idea's on that Debbie???
Beth, my son is turning 8. Has had speech and OT since he was 41/2.
Dr M approaches capd from a neurophysiological point of view...
peggy, is he dx has CAPD?
How does that work??? Like brain processing?
we've talked about her research but it's hard for me to explain......
Beth. Just had CAPD dx this summer through school testing. He is going to DuPont this Monday for 2nd opinion privately.
did you say he has other issues too?
yes it looks at what is happening in the brain when the auditory stimuli is being processed...
how about i invite her and see if she's available to come to an evening chat again.....
Does Dr. M speak publicly about this? Any public forum to hear her?
it's hard to follow everyone...
OK. That sound great Debbie!!!
Good idea Debbie
Dr M has recently done some public speaking on capd and her research
Beth, He has receptive/expressive language delay. Fine motor skills delay. Allergies.
I"ll get in touch with her and see when she may be available..i dont know her schedule...
sounds like my son....his OT suggested sensory intergration problems.
Thanks Debbie... Does Dr. M have copies of her research???
ladies im going to excuse myself for the evening...i'm beat and think i'm headed out of town again in the morning..
goodnight, debbie. this has been great
part of the notes from her presentation are on the U of F website under her name...
Beth, I'm not sure about sensory intergration, he may have problems there too..
let me look for the addy quick
Thank you , DEbbie talk next week
Good night all
Good Night Debbie... Thank you very much as always... You are very helpful!!! :)
well, when you mentioned fine motor skills....my son has problems w/both fine and gross
Beth- what age level is he testing at, I am an OT.
Beth, my son's gross motor are OK. Not great...
usually 3 years behind (he just turned 9)
Karen, What does an OT do that is difffernt than a PT my son has been getting ot at school, but the is no no comunication with the ot
Did your ot do a full si eval. on him. Si is very complex, and you need someone very well trained in it, to diagnose and treat.
he has very bad handwriting (margins are bad, goes down on the pages - they mentioned mid-line crossover problems)
sensory intergration?
Has he been tested for CAPD ?
karen, his last IEP recommended testing for SI but never heard back if they would agree to it
his OT recommended it
Kathy- there are very definite boundaries between ot's and pt's in the school system. Ot's work on fine motor skills for school readiness, ie, handwriting, while pt's do more gross motor, ie, if a child has a problem being mobile around school.
my school district does not believe in sensory intergration problems the OT who did his eval. was not affliated with the schools, the schools gave him ot an the basis of her report
i only know about CAPD via the internet - he's been in speech since he was 3 and no-one has ever told me about it
Thank you karen
Beth, I would definitely follow up, and find out if and when he is being tested for si problems. If he really has si issues, he can really benefit from therapy.
he receives OT once a week w/school district. our private ins had been no help at all (we plan on changing our coverage)
Your welcome Kathy. you should really demand to be in contact with anyone who treats your child, I work in the school system, and have always been in contact with any parent who wanted to contact me
http://web.clas.ufl.edu/users/moncrief/abstracts.html took me forever but here's dr m's research info
Thanks Debbie. Take care!!! :)
remember she's a teaching research audiologist so part of the info is class related...
goodnight everyone..see you next week or chat with you through email if i can be of help....night night
bye
Good Night!
good nite.
The school he is at for his communication disorder is terrible. You cant make an appointment to see the pricncipal, talk to her on the phone, it took me three weeks to get the ot to call me and she didnt have time totalk to me. He remains at this public school solely because the class room teacher is a speech path and there are only six kids in the class
He onlyu goes two mornings a week
I feel terrible for the kids who attend there full tme
When I have a big problem that needs to be handled I call the superintentants office and speak directly to the coordinator for special ed
I would show up at his therapy, and ask her face to face when it is a good time for her to talk to you about your child.
might just have to do that
well, i need to get off. i've enjoyed the info
Good night-hopw to see all of you nest weeek
good luck kathy. I must go to sleep. Speak to you all soon. Good nite.
goodnight

Hello. I have just logged on for the chat line. What is the subject tonight
Is anybody out there to talk tonight?
Hi, Various things. IDEA conference...
It looks like I'm the only one left... Just was away for a few minutes.
You may want to check with Debbie regarding archives of tonights chat.
I am going to be going...Good night! :)
That is no big deal. i was late at logging on and I just wanted to jump right into the conversations
It was interesting as always... Have a good night.
