debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 8:33:10 AM)
Good morning Dr J!! I am doing great..How about yourself?

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 8:34:27 AM)
Yesterday in the mail I did receive your's and Ann's memberships.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 8:34:55 AM)
Doing great too. Still trying to fight off the ends of a cold or something.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 8:35:33 AM)
Is security on campus getting any better?

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 8:35:37 AM)
I'm glad you got our membership and dues.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 8:36:55 AM)
I hope you are feeling better soon. It can be very annoying when a cold just kind of lingers and hangs on.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 8:38:07 AM)
Yes. As of Monday (yesterday), they lightened up a great deal. They opened a second entrance (a side entrance right near one of the major parking lots) and they check, now, only to see that you have a valid Gallaudet University Parking permit and if they recognize you (sort of). They only check to see ID if there's a question of identity. BUt, they no longer ask you to state (sign) your name, social security number, dept. and phone extension (if you're faculty or staff). It was all of the other things that really SLOWED everything down.

is this Patti by chance?

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 8:41:36 AM)
Debbie. Yes, now it's just pull up and zip in. If there's a question about a car infront, they pull it to the side and another security office checks it out so it won't hold up the rest of the traffice behind, especially in the am and around 4-5pm when everyone begins their homeward bound journey's except we few with evening classes ;-)

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 8:41:49 AM)
Yep

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 8:42:15 AM)
Good to see you Patti! Have you met Dr J before?

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 8:42:19 AM)
Good moring PSL. (Sounds like a test we'd use for evaluating APD ;-) )

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 8:42:40 AM)
No, I''ve not had the pleasure. Good morning Dr. J

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 8:42:42 AM)
Hello Patti. No, I don't think we've met before.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 8:43:20 AM)
PSL, Dr J has been of great help with the support group and the NCAPD.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 8:43:25 AM)
Are you in Jacksonville, Patti (or should I say PSL)?

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 8:43:52 AM)

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 8:43:55 AM)
I have my own practice on Amelia Island (north east Florida) and have a GREAT interest in CAPD.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 8:47:13 AM)
Yes, Sissy. I think you will find there is an overwhelming amount of information about what people call auditory processing and CAPD on the internet.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 8:47:39 AM)
yes, dr. j I have discovered that

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 8:47:54 AM)

I have an 11 yr. daughter who was diagnosed with CAPD at the end of her 4th grade yr.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 8:49:00 AM)
she is now in 6th grade

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 8:49:26 AM)
having difficulties with reading

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 8:49:46 AM)
Sissy, my daughter is 9 in 4th grade..she was dx 2 1/2 years ago by PSL

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 8:49:59 AM)
been trying to find out how CAPD effects reading

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 8:50:02 AM)
Sissy, what treatment programs have you used?

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 8:50:20 AM)

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 8:51:01 AM)
sorry everyone..had a quick phone call...

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 8:51:03 AM)
Sissy, did your professionals (audiologists, SLPs, etc.) every tell you what specific area, type of problem, or such identifier they used to explain what TYPE of auditory processing problem your daughter has?

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 8:51:33 AM)
i believe it is decoding

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 8:51:45 AM)
i have the report in front of me

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 8:52:20 AM)
it's auditory closure/decoding

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 8:52:24 AM)
Well, do you know about the basics of reading? One of the first steps in reading is decoding. So, if your daughter has a decoding problem, then, she has problems reading that may be related to the difficulties in auditory decoding.

Hi, everyone. Topic?

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 8:55:15 AM)
concerns with her difficulties in reading comprehension

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 8:55:42 AM)
Cher, the topic is just a general review of some questions/concerns that Sissy has about her daughter.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 8:55:48 AM)
she seems to comprehend better reading out loud than silently to her self

Michelle (ID=72) (Oct 24, 2000 8:56:07 AM)
it took awhile for my son to get the letters down right....we were concerned that he was dislexic

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 8:56:20 AM)
interesting. My daughter has same problem with comprehension

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 8:56:57 AM)
I am wondering what more can be done to further help her

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 8:57:05 AM)

Michelle (ID=72) (Oct 24, 2000 8:58:31 AM)
have you gotten in touch with the IST

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 8:58:35 AM)
I sent my daughter to a program offered by the Institute of Reading Development

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 8:58:58 AM)
It had some good ideas -- such as stopping after a paragraph and summarizing what was read

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 8:58:58 AM)
What type of reading program is your child involved with in school? Does she receive extra help in reading?

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 8:59:40 AM)

Michelle (ID=72) (Oct 24, 2000 8:59:59 AM)
I must go....my 2 yr old needs me...hope to chat tonight

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:00:09 AM)
she has currently been recommend for an after school tutorial program starting Oct. 30

Jonathan (ID=74) (Oct 24, 2000 9:00:09 AM)
Just trying to gather some info. Both my son and myself have CAPD (so I assume). No specific dx made yet. Anyone know of the best place in NYC to get tested?

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 9:00:11 AM)
What grade is she in?

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:00:15 AM)

i trying to learn what more can be done to further help

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 9:01:23 AM)
Sissy, does she do better when the subject interests her?

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:01:36 AM)
Jonathan on the website for the NCAPD at www.ncapd.org there is a list of audiologist who test for CAPD. I am pretty sure there are referrals for NYC. Have you checked it out yet?

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:01:37 AM)
yes

Jonathan (ID=74) (Oct 24, 2000 9:01:58 AM)
No, not yet

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:02:35 AM)
We started Earobics recently (step 1 for my 4 yr old and step 2 for my 9 yr old). My 9 yr old is pretty bored with it. Will it get more challenging?

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:02:53 AM)
Sissy one thing that we have tried with Sarah is reviewing the story together, mapping out what has happened in the story and then trying to predict what may happen next.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:03:32 AM)
yes, that should help

Jonathan (ID=74) (Oct 24, 2000 9:03:34 AM)
I don't just want anyone . I want to know who is the best source for testing and for getting help. I don't want my son to go through what I did my whole life

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:03:41 AM)
brb

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:04:20 AM)
Jonathan, do you have a hearing institute in your area?

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:04:23 AM)
my mind is going in a thousand ways. so please bear with me

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:04:25 AM)
That's very understandable.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:04:52 AM)
cher are you a parent

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:04:58 AM)
it's ok Sissy...take your time...capd can be very overwhelming and hard to understand

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:05:13 AM)
thank you debbie

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 9:05:19 AM)
yes. I have 2 daughters ... one 10 (with APD) and a 16 y.o.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:05:55 AM)
i so excited because I have someone to talk to about this

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 9:06:01 AM)
Debbie --- is NCAPD tax deductable yet?

Jonathan (ID=74) (Oct 24, 2000 9:06:37 AM)
My wife has found two possible places. I believe they are Mt Sinai and one other (oops there goes my APD popping up again)

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:06:57 AM)
I was very fortunate to finally meet an audiologist who listened to me and believed me when I thought there was something wrong with Sarah and did the apd testing.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:07:26 AM)
Cher, no not yet. It taking time to get the info together to do the paperwork, but we are working on it.

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 9:07:39 AM)
We went through two rounds of testing before I got the answers I needed

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:07:44 AM)
More professionals should LISTEN to more parents!

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:08:06 AM)
cher, is it your story about sarah that I read online

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:08:11 AM)
Thank you PSL!

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 9:08:15 AM)
No.

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:08:20 AM)
Our two children with APD had pretty severe receptive and expressive speech delays, so we didn't have to fight to get further testing.

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:08:21 AM)
Sarah is Debbie's daughter

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:08:21 AM)
The story about Sarah online is my daughter Sissy.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:08:39 AM)
i just read it

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:08:42 AM)
this morning

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:08:54 AM)
it sounded so much like my daughter

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:09:01 AM)
but, it ended

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 9:09:04 AM)
Sissy, have you joined the listserv yet?

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:09:05 AM)
PSL is the audiologist who finally listened to me when I took Sarah for evaluation

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 9:09:29 AM)
I found the most information and support from the list.

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:09:30 AM)
Sissy, that is what is so great about the listserv. Other parents who know what you are going through.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:09:31 AM)
at the point where it talked more about my dauther

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:09:55 AM)
cher, what is listserv

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:10:08 AM)
sissy the story will be completed, I've been taking time to work on other projects such as the chat and the NCAPD. I found it hard to sit and write about what we've been through with Sarah, brought up alot of very strong emotions

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:10:25 AM)
understand

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:10:42 AM)
debbie, I understand. It is a never ending saga.

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 9:10:58 AM)
Dr. J. has set up a bulletin-board type of list. E-mail messages are posted for all to read and repond.

feeling that way now

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 9:11:11 AM)
You can join it through the same web-site

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:11:40 AM)
ok thank you

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:11:42 AM)
Sissy the listserv is run by Dr J. There are two lists, one for parents and one for professionals. There are approximately over 630 parents on the list currently so there are always wonderful ideas from dr j, other professionals and from parents on ways to deal with capd

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:12:23 AM)
ok, thank you

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:12:25 AM)
Jonathan, if you dont mind me asking. how long ago were you dx with capd?

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:12:57 AM)
who is Dr. J

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:13:54 AM)
Dr J is in the chat with us now, but he had to step away for a moment, not sure if he's back with us yet or not......he is an audiologist from Galludet University who is very knowledgable on CAPD. He's dedicated alot of time to helping parents.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:14:09 AM)
awesome

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:14:13 AM)
Does anyone know whether a car accident can make someone who already has ADP have symptoms that worsen?

Jonathan (ID=74) (Oct 24, 2000 9:14:54 AM)
I never was I always knew something wrong, never fit in. My wife and I came up with an idea about a "processing" disorder before I had any solid info. Then about a year ago we got something in the mail from a friend that got it off the internet and we went AHA!

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 9:15:39 AM)
Kelli --- was there a head injury involved?

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:16:18 AM)
sorry I'm back

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:16:46 AM)
Jonathan, if you mind me asking questions, please let me know, what type of things do you currently do to cope with your capd?

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:17:18 AM)
Kelli, I'm following up on your car accident question. If you don't mind sharing, what type of head injury is involved (if any)?

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:17:53 AM)
Yes there was a head injury

Jonathan (ID=74) (Oct 24, 2000 9:18:22 AM)
I guess Ive just learned over the years to try to focus more on people that are talking. In groups I sometimes tell people that if they want to talk to me to call my name

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:18:27 AM)
My brother-in-law was in a car accident. His short term memory (especially auditory in nature) was affected.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:18:33 AM)
the audiologist report on my daughter Daniela recommends compensatory strategies,

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:18:49 AM)
He states that background noise has always bothered him but is now much worse.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:18:54 AM)
what does this mean?

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 9:19:22 AM)
Sissy, I think these are things that can help her to cope

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:19:37 AM)
the evironmental modifications have been made in the classroom

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:19:49 AM)
Compensatory strategies are things we do to make life easier. For example, if we know we have trouble remembering the grocery list, we write it down or say it over and over to ourselves.

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:19:50 AM)
He always struggled in school but is not dumb. He never graduated. His wife says that when I describe my children, I am describing him as well.

Jonathan (ID=74) (Oct 24, 2000 9:20:11 AM)
Does anyone know if there is any research being done to find a CURE?

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:20:27 AM)
it states to overcome residual dysfunction

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:20:37 AM)
FOr all, since processing is something that is done by the brain or central nervous system.....ANY injury to the brain or Central Nervous System can affect the functioning of that system, thus, can affect processing.

Jonathan (ID=74) (Oct 24, 2000 9:21:14 AM)
with all our brilliant doctors someones got to be able to figure out something

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:21:18 AM)
Dr j, his head was hit mostly on the left side. Both ears were black after the accident. His front also hit the windshield. He broke the seatbelt right out of the vehicle.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:21:19 AM)
Jonathan, a good question about a CURE. But, since auditory processing is not a disease, there can not be a cure. Auditory processing is merely a label used as a descriptor for behaviors.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:21:39 AM)
what should be done to help her develop compensatory strategies

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 9:22:03 AM)
Sissy, she has probably already developed some of her own. My daughter taught herself to lip read.

Jonathan (ID=74) (Oct 24, 2000 9:22:07 AM)
I se your point, but I dont accept that there is no possible cure. Ther is a reason for the

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:22:15 AM)
Jonathan there is research being done is the are of apd's but before we can effectively find a "cure" we first have to understand what causes apd's I dont think there would be a "cure" but there will be strategies to help people cope and overcome

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:22:25 AM)
can the speech/language therapist at school be of help?

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:22:27 AM)
Sissy, you need to know which auditory skill areas she has difficulty with and focus the strategies on that particular area.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:22:33 AM)
Jonathan, these brilliant doctors (as you call them) still do not have any agreement on what is and what is NOT APD. We have many ideas, many approaches, many descriptions of what is or what may be APD. We are far from understanding this group of disorders because there is no consensus on what it is.

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 9:23:08 AM)
PSL, can you list the areas for Sissy?

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:23:20 AM)
the difficulty is auditory closure(decoding) deficit

Jonathan (ID=74) (Oct 24, 2000 9:23:44 AM)
What about the ASHA article published in'96. It seemed to outline what the condition is

Cher (ID=73) (Oct 24, 2000 9:23:53 AM)
Gotta go. Good luck to alll. Sissy, join the list. It will help.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:24:03 AM)
ok, thank you

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:24:38 AM)
Some of the skill areas may include auditory memory, phonemic awareness, auditory closure, binaural integration and separation skills, sequencing, etc. From my understanding, difficulty with closure skills may relate to a child's inability to learn plurals or word endings, etc.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:24:45 AM)
Jonathan, and others, if there were a behavior like "walking funny" and we had NO IDEA of WHY people who had the "walking funny" problem walked funny? How could there be a "cure" when no one knows why people with "walking funny" disorder walk funny (please this is NOT a put down, but I couldn't think of another analogy.

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:25:13 AM)
Sissy, it is important that your SPL is familiar with APD. Ours is and is working in the classroom with our 9 yr old to help him develop organizational skills etc. He needs to recognize when the teacher is going to teach so he can be ready to "listen".

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:26:10 AM)
Kelli, what you describe is often refered to as "set to attend" not organizational skills. Set to attend is a critical skill for success in many areas such as education.

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:26:14 AM)
Good description, Dr. J.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:26:51 AM)
Kelli, what is SPL/?

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:26:57 AM)
He currently sees that his teacher is talking about a subject and then starts digging out his pencil, paper and book. He cannot listen and do these things at the same time and misses part of the instructions as a result. Thank you Dr J.

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:27:04 AM)
Sissy, Speech Language Pathologist

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:27:19 AM)
Debbie, Is that right?

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:27:33 AM)
SLP not SPL

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:28:06 AM)
Kelli, not too sure how much the SLP in the school knows about CAPD

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:28:14 AM)
good example kelli

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:28:33 AM)
this is all new to me

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:28:47 AM)
Sissy that is why we are here to try and help =)

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:29:09 AM)
Consider the following. About 100 years ago, a soldier is wounded. A bullet goes through the soldier's leg. The "cure!" Cut off his leg or gangreen will set in and kill him. Then, about 30-40 years later, along comes sulfur drugs (antibiotics) and the "cure" is to poor sulfur on the wound, and get the bullet out. Then, comes 40-50 years more, and the cure is to treat the wound and maybe the person has NO noticable aftereffects. Today, you can have your leg shot off and the "cure" is to save the leg and reattach it.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:29:09 AM)
thank you debbie

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:29:09 AM)
Sissy, you have come to the right place and spending time with people who know and want to learn more.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:30:49 AM)
i will be having a conference in the school soon, and I wanted to know what they have to further aid Daniela with her compensatory strategies, and who is the one who can best assist her.

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:31:08 AM)
The teachers involvement and knowledge is also important. Our son's weakness is reading comprehension. Our teacher is aware of this and has him correct his work in this area. She gives him the average of the two grades as an incentive.

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:31:48 AM)
Many teachers have no idea what APD is, let alone how to deal with children who may have it!!

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:31:56 AM)
Sissy you can ask PSL about when I first met her and we talked about CAPD, I had absolutely no clue!! This is a learning process we go through to help our kids. There will always be more and more questions, but as you learn you'll begin to understand and when you look back you'll think "now I understand why that happened or why she said that"

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:32:19 AM)
kelli, reading comp is a big problem for my daughter

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:32:29 AM)
I have copied handouts to give to any teacher involved with my APD children.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:32:51 AM)
debbie, i will talk to the psl

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:32:55 AM)
Sissy, don't feel overwhelmed. It IS overwhelming. That's why we are here and we've set up the CAPD list and this and other chats to help support and help you and other parents understand and be better advocates for your children. There are also adult support systems. and there is a National Coalition on Auditory Processing Disorders or NCAPD set up by our debbie who is here on this chat who runs, hosts, and pays for this chat herself and has her website CAPD from the Heart of a Mother.

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:32:59 AM)
Kelli, that's great! I encourage parents to do just that and often provide them.

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:33:18 AM)
Sissy, I homeschooled this subject during the summer months with my son. I also did a literature program with my younger girls called Five in a Row.

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:33:46 AM)
Sissy, do you have an e-mail address?

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:33:49 AM)
thank you dr. j, i just discovered this chat group late last night

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:34:02 AM)
yes, it's JaMex@bellsouth.net

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:34:25 AM)
That's great, Sissy. I hope you will find support, assistance and gain a better understanding.

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:34:42 AM)
Thanks Sissy. You can reach me at ears2u@mail.com

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:35:00 AM)
BTW, I know I had to leave (sorry) for a bit and never got to give my response on the reading comprehension issue. .....

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:35:05 AM)
I said earlier, how excited i was too finally be able to chat with someone about capd

Jonathan (ID=74) (Oct 24, 2000 9:35:10 AM)
thanks all for your interest in helping your own and other kids (and some adults) Got to go now, boss will be in soon God bless you all

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:35:10 AM)
the NCAPD is currently working on brochures that you can take to your school and teachers. Hopefully when we get these completed they will be of great benefit to parents in helping educators understand how to help our kids

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:35:24 AM)
good by Jonathan! please come back soon

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:35:33 AM)
by Dr. j nice meeting you

Jonathan (ID=74) (Oct 24, 2000 9:35:45 AM)
I'll try

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:35:47 AM)
Comprehension as with reading decoding can be due to many different reasons. As with all problems related to processing of verbal information it is important to get a proper and thorough evaluation of auditory processing and language processing.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:36:07 AM)
Bye Sissy. Hope to hear from you again either here at another chat or on the CAPD list.

Kelli (ID=75) (Oct 24, 2000 9:36:09 AM)
One of my daycare children is late and I'm afraid they might be trying to call. I had better go and clear the phone line. Take care everyone.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:36:25 AM)
bye Kelli! Have a great day

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:36:25 AM)
Bye, Kelli.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:37:13 AM)
Sissy, every Tuesday night at 9 pm EST there is a parent chat in here too. It's really a good time to talk to other parents who do UNDERSTAND!

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:37:30 AM)
yes, I saw that in the website

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:37:44 AM)
i'll will do my best to be online with it tonight

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:38:18 AM)
my daughter was diagnosed at the end of 4th grade

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:38:33 AM)
From my experience, everyone associated with APD (parents, professionals, etc.) are very helpful and want to provide as much information as possible to those with questions.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:38:42 AM)
I'm sorry if i missed it when you said earlier, what grade is she in now?

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:38:51 AM)
6th

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:39:09 AM)
but I didn't know anything about CAPD during her 5th grade year

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:39:24 AM)
she basically had a bad year

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:39:29 AM)
is your daughter on an IEP?

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:39:37 AM)
she has a 504

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:39:56 AM)
Sissy, now that you are learning about APD, a lot of things are starting to make sense about your daughter during 5th grade.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:40:04 AM)
my daughter has a 504 also

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:40:11 AM)
yes, psl

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:40:28 AM)
Sorry to hear that. It happens. Sometimes the teachers/school, etc. are really great and provide the help and support in one grade and then little or nothing happens in another grade. (It's like life. It has it's ups and downs). But you're on top of it now.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:40:49 AM)
the class that she was in, was not a good learning environment for her at all

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:40:59 AM)
teacher was not supportive by no means

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:41:27 AM)
now she does have two teachers who are using the fm trainer consistently

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:41:31 AM)
Sounds like she needs to be educated about APD

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:41:51 AM)
Does Daniela enjoy the FM trainer? Use it regularly?

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:41:55 AM)
yes, very much so psl

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:42:24 AM)
Daniela has a great attitude about using the trainer, and yes she does use it regularly

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:42:39 AM)
Sissy, it's good to know you have a contract with the school. Remember, the 504 is not merely a plan but it is a contract between the school and you (as advocate/parent of your daughter) that the school is responsible to provide the accommodations in the 504 for your daughter. Remember it is there responsibility. But, you have to be on top of them to be sure they live up to their contract.

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:43:01 AM)
Debbie, does Sarah still use the FM?

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:43:08 AM)
Sissy, my daughter uses an FM in classes and has for about a year, she's really starting to be able to tell the difference betweeen what she understand with and with out the FM

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:43:23 AM)
yes, you're absolutely righ dr. j. I realize i am my child's only advocate

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:43:56 AM)
good new, debbie

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:44:01 AM)
news

Dorien (ID=76) (Oct 24, 2000 9:44:03 AM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 208.199.21.97 )

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:44:08 AM)
PSL, Sarah has commented lately about how happy she is that she has her FM and how much it helps her. She only uses it in school.

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:44:14 AM)
Hello, Dorien

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:44:15 AM)
hey dorien!! How are you this am?

Dorien (ID=76) (Oct 24, 2000 9:44:29 AM)
Hi everyone

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:44:37 AM)
daniela, only uses it in school too

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:44:50 AM)
daniela, is very gifted in music

Dorien (ID=76) (Oct 24, 2000 9:44:53 AM)
Just got back from the school

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:45:01 AM)
In my opinion, school is the CRITICAl place to use the FM

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:45:02 AM)
this is what is so astounding

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:45:15 AM)
yes, you're right psl

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:45:37 AM)
Sissy, that's great. One thing you do have to realize, I hope you realize this. An FM auditory trainer is a misnomer. It is not a trainer. It is an FM broadcast system. That is, it merely broadcasts the voice of the person using the microphone to a receiver worn by your daughter. SInce the person using the mic has his/her voice only a few inches from the mic, the speaker's voice will be louder than any other sounds in the environment when heard via the earphones or what ever way your daughter hears via the FM system.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:45:44 AM)
A few weeks ago during the sunday night children's church Sarah told me she was having trouble understanding the teacher so she asked the teacher if she could move closer since she was having trouble understanding due to her capd. To me that was a huge step for her to really recognize when she was in the situation how to put herself in a better sitation to understand.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:46:02 AM)
How did it go Dorien?

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 9:46:58 AM)
I try to encourage children (and parents) to OWN their APD. Let people know and MOST people will understand.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:47:26 AM)
dr. j, daniela has said how much the fm trainer does help her.

Dorien (ID=76) (Oct 24, 2000 9:47:27 AM)
As well as always the school seems to think that Fast fward may not help Tricia as she does read well

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:47:32 AM)
Also, just note, and this is important to understand as well. AN FM system will NOT train your daughter to do anything related to comprehension. SO, the use of the FM system in and of itself will have NO affect on reading or even listening comprehension. Definitely it has no impact on reading comprehension. Listening comprehension MAY improve ONLY becasue the child does not have a listening comprehension problem, but listening was problematic because of poor access to the teacher's vocie.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:48:27 AM)
What is your next step Dorien?

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:48:34 AM)
thank you. dr. j

Dorien (ID=76) (Oct 24, 2000 9:48:46 AM)
I will show then how this can help her.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:48:57 AM)
Good morning Dorien. I just realized you've joined us. If I may jump in on what you said. Fast ForWord is NOT a program based on developing anything to do with reading. There is NO research to support that FFWD has as it's primary aim improving reading.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:49:33 AM)
Dorien, if you don't mind my asking. WHy are you asking the school to provide FFWD for your daughter?

Dorien (ID=76) (Oct 24, 2000 9:50:02 AM)
She has problems with working memory

Dorien (ID=76) (Oct 24, 2000 9:50:31 AM)
I was told that this could help improve some of this

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:50:50 AM)
debbie, i do work with Daniela on saturdays with reading comprehension

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:51:56 AM)
dr. j. do you think the use of auditory books could help with reading comp?

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:52:09 AM)
I think it's very important for every one to understand there is no ONE right thing to do for a child with capd...each child is different and may have different factors causing the processing problem. With each child having the different underlying factors, each child may need different solutions.

Dorien, FFWD is not a program based on improving working memory either. Actually, FFWD provides NO time factors (one of the critiques of this program that is an outgrowth of a project on FFWD I have just completed with two other colleagues). There are much better ways to help working memory than FFWD. First, though, you have to identify the underlying factor accounting for the problems with working memory.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:52:24 AM)
what type of things do you do sissy?

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:52:58 AM)
to help her?

Dorien (ID=76) (Oct 24, 2000 9:53:11 AM)
How can I help her

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:53:17 AM)
yes, when you are working on comprehension

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:53:25 AM)
Sissy, re: auditory books. The underlying factor (as you may always hear me say) is WHat is the underlying reason for Daniela having problems with auditory comprehension? Until this underlying factor is identified, I would have NO suggestions to provide.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:54:17 AM)
Dorien. Need to identify the underlying factor accounting for working memory problems. Then, you target the underlying factor. For example, in order to use working memory these are some of the processes involved.....

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:54:35 AM)
what do you recommend be done, to help exactly identify the problem.

Dorien (ID=76) (Oct 24, 2000 9:56:01 AM)
Dr.j is there a way to have a child tested for capd at the age of 5

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 9:56:12 AM)
debbie, I have her do read and thinks skills, we read together and I ask her questions for comprehension.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:57:01 AM)
I'm going to give an example of what dr j is saying with a problem other than capd.......I have a nephew who has been going to the dr for over 6 months complaining of headaches....the drs have talked to him and offered a few solutions but they did not work....one night about 5 weeks ago my nephew ended up in the emergency room with another massive headache. The next day they removed a tumor the size of a golf ball from his brain. His headaches have gone away. Why didnt the things the other doctors try work? they didnt know the cause of the headaches!

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:57:57 AM)
First, you have to be able to get the relevant information into the working memory store (so, we have to identify if this is an area of problem). Then, you have to tag or label that information so that it can be manipulated in working memory which may be more of a language and familiarity factor than an auditory factor. Then, you have to hold the information in working memory (we often consider this pneumonics or such). Then, you have to search memory to retrieve the inforamtion (recall) and, last, you have to organize the information in memory. SO, the areas needing to be evalauted are decoding, attention, labeling (related to language), memory length and strategies for storing (like chunking and associating), and word retreival. One of these areas will pup up as the basic area of weakness and the goal would be to strengthen this area and coordinate work in this are with the other areas.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 9:59:11 AM)
Oh, Debbie. I hope he's ok. WHen I read your post, I was really shocked. I just hope he's ok. My prayers are for him and his family.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 9:59:43 AM)
He's doing remarkably well now that they found the cause of the headaches and removed it.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 10:01:44 AM)
The whole point was they had to find the cause of the problem in order to fix it. To find the problem it involved him giving the dr enough information and the dr asking the right questions to know what to look for.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 10:01:54 AM)
Dorien, your question about testing for an auditory processing problem at age 5 years. Yes. Auditory processing can be tested at age 5 years. However, you will have to find an audiologist who feels comfortatble, and is knowledgeable in understanding auditory process development and listening development to evaluate and interpret test results for children age 5 years. Recently, (only this past weekend) I completed the reports on two children I evaluated for auditory processing under age 5 years. One was age 4 years 3 months and the other was just 4 years old one week before the date of evaluation.

PSL (ID=71) (Oct 24, 2000 10:03:07 AM)
Thanks to everybody for a good chat this morning. I have to go. Have a great day!

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 10:03:21 AM)
Take care Patti, Hope to chat with you soon!

Dorien (ID=76) (Oct 24, 2000 10:03:25 AM)
I will have to see if I can find someone to test my son. Thanks Dr.J

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:03:30 AM)
bye, psl, nice meeting you.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 10:03:36 AM)
Debbie, you are right. All too often, professionals do not know how to ask the right questions, or, worse, they do not know how to observe and listen. As parents and as people (laymen) we often do not know how to provide the right information. For example, saying "I have a headache" or "My head hurts" is correct for a laymen while the doctor needs to know many other factors to identify what to look for.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 10:04:30 AM)
Debbie, please if you see PSL again, tell her I wanted to say it was really nice to meet her (at this chat anyway). I hope she'll be more active .

Dorien (ID=76) (Oct 24, 2000 10:04:30 AM)
Have to go to work.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 10:04:45 AM)
Dr J I will be sure to pass on the message.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 10:06:14 AM)
Well, Sissy. I would expect that this chat may have been overwhelming at times. But, it was great to have you join. I hope you'll be more active. And, I hope that some of your questions were answered, or that you gained some new insights and information.

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 10:06:38 AM)
Debbie, I don't know if she's on the CAPD list or the professional one ???

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:07:03 AM)

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 10:07:57 AM)
Sissy I really do recommend you join the listserv by dr J (maybe he can provide the address). It's sooooooooo helpful!

dr.j (ID=69) (Oct 24, 2000 10:08:32 AM)
Sissy, great. Now you can ask some of those questions to other professionals or other parents and sound them out and soon you'll be the expert in APD in your area of S.C.

debbie (ID=68) (Oct 24, 2000 10:09:02 AM)
Sissy what area of SC are you in? there is a great speech hearing clinic in charleston that is familiar with capd

my child was 10 when she was first diagnosed

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:25:58 AM)
been doing all I can to educate myself

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:26:26 AM)
this chat room has already been helpful,

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:26:34 AM)
just finding someone to talk with

gplpn (ID=77) (Oct 24, 2000 10:26:44 AM)
Do you ever feel as thogh the teachers think of the capd as an excuse? My daughter was 10 also

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:26:58 AM)
an excuse for what

gplpn (ID=77) (Oct 24, 2000 10:27:19 AM)
an excuse for not doing well in school

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:27:47 AM)
no, i think it's more that teachers are educated on capd

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:28:02 AM)
i should say are not

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:28:29 AM)
this is my first time in this chat room

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:28:35 AM)
how about for yo

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:29:23 AM)
what does your child struggle with

gplpn (ID=77) (Oct 24, 2000 10:29:44 AM)
Ive found that our teachers are just not sure about the actual disorder and are just as confused as I am as a parent. I have never chatted either, Boy am i a terrible typer

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:30:19 AM)
our 5th grade teacher was no help

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:30:32 AM)
my child is in 6th grade now

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:30:44 AM)
and her teachers are really working hard with her

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:30:57 AM)
no telling what next year will bring

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:31:08 AM)
i now realize it's one year at a time

gplpn (ID=77) (Oct 24, 2000 10:31:23 AM)
Marys main struggle is her reading skills. I held her back in !st grade not knowing she had this trouble

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:31:39 AM)
what grade is she in

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:31:59 AM)
reading comprehension is what Dan struggles with

gplpn (ID=77) (Oct 24, 2000 10:32:41 AM)
She had speech trouble at first but I related it to her having 4 ear surgeries. She is in 4th grasde

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:33:53 AM)
I have learned ear problems can be why children develop CAPD

gplpn (ID=77) (Oct 24, 2000 10:34:35 AM)
That is what I found out from one of the web sites

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:34:39 AM)
my child doesn't have a history of ear problems.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:34:58 AM)
in fact very little ear infections ocurred during early infancy

gplpn (ID=77) (Oct 24, 2000 10:35:28 AM)
Im a nurse and thought I knew it all boy I was wrong!!!!!1

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:36:09 AM)
that's okay

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:36:19 AM)
always something to learn

gplpn (ID=77) (Oct 24, 2000 10:36:47 AM)
They say thatear infections can be a factor But are not always the cause Was you son premature?

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:37:21 AM)
it's my daughter who has capd, and no she was not premature. In fact always a healthy child.

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:37:52 AM)
she also reads well, but struggles with reading comp

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:38:15 AM)
i've learned capd effects the reading comp

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:38:32 AM)
still trying to learn what can be done to help her

gplpn (ID=78) (Oct 24, 2000 10:38:41 AM)

My computer just kicked me off Sorry

Sissy (ID=70) (Oct 24, 2000 10:39:48 AM)
that okay, can you hold while i check my voice mail. I've on line for awhile. talking to the experts early.

gplpn (ID=78) (Oct 24, 2000 10:40:23 AM)
I feel so guilty about Marys capd, Do you ever feel like that?

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:41:27 AM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 216.79.218.25 )

gplpn (ID=78) (Oct 24, 2000 10:41:52 AM)
I know its not my fault but it hurts to see her struggle so much, I wish I knew what to do to best help her.

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:42:09 AM)
i know exactly how you feel

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:42:30 AM)
your taking the first step, by educating yourself

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:42:46 AM)
i have learned CAPD is a learning disability

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:43:07 AM)
but that doesn't mean, our children are not intelligent

gplpn (ID=78) (Oct 24, 2000 10:43:17 AM)
Im tryin to find out as much as i can and provide the teachers with the info Ive found

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:43:20 AM)
In fact my child is very intelligent

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:43:42 AM)
this CAPD just makes learning more difficult

gplpn (ID=78) (Oct 24, 2000 10:44:21 AM)
She is very intelligent and very kind and sweet which is great qualities to have

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:44:33 AM)
same with my child

gplpn (ID=78) (Oct 24, 2000 10:45:14 AM)
Thank god she has no other trouble like behavior trouble

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:45:35 AM)
this morning I sent a CAPD handout to the teacher via my daughter

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:46:13 AM)
same with my child no behavior problems.

gplpn (ID=78) (Oct 24, 2000 10:46:24 AM)
Mary seems to be overwhelmed with really noisy enviroments does you child?

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:47:25 AM)
not so much overwhelmed, but Daniela is very easily distracted, so noisy environments are a big distraction to her, and effects her learning

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:47:45 AM)
does Mary where a fm trainer

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:47:59 AM)
i should say does mary wear a fm trainer

gplpn (ID=78) (Oct 24, 2000 10:48:08 AM)
We went to the backstreet boys concert I thout it would bother her not that night !!!!

gplpn (ID=78) (Oct 24, 2000 10:49:39 AM)
No she doesnt and our school has pods which are one big area divided into 4 classes which Ive found to be a horrible learning enviroment

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:50:46 AM)
oh definitely, that is not good for her. CAPD need to have a closed classroom

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:51:08 AM)
is she in public school

gplpn (ID=78) (Oct 24, 2000 10:51:43 AM)
Yes

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:52:15 AM)
is that the only type of learning environment they have in the school

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:52:47 AM)
was it the school who diagnosed her with capd

gplpn (ID=78) (Oct 24, 2000 10:52:51 AM)
its the only type they have in our school

gplpn (ID=78) (Oct 24, 2000 10:53:24 AM)
She was diagnosed by an audiologist

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:53:52 AM)
yes i realize an audiologist, but through the school right

gplpn (ID=78) (Oct 24, 2000 10:55:16 AM)
Yes the speech teacher recommed she have the test this april and i didnt get the progress report until after school was out last year so thi s year is the first we knew about the capd

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:55:58 AM)
did the audiologist recommend the use in the report for a fm trainer

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:56:28 AM)
i highly recommend the use of a fm trainer.

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:56:39 AM)
It has been a great help for my child

gplpn (ID=78) (Oct 24, 2000 10:56:48 AM)
How can we get one?

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:57:23 AM)
it is available through the school district audiologist.

gplpn (ID=78) (Oct 24, 2000 10:57:51 AM)
the audiologist wasnt even at her IEPmeeting

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:58:21 AM)
wow

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:58:35 AM)
sounds like you have to get the ball rolling yourself

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 10:59:49 AM)
by using the fm trainer, the teacher is mic and your child wears a headset, so she could hear the teacher directly into her ears.

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 11:00:21 AM)
that open classroom environment can not be good for her at all

gplpn (ID=80) (Oct 24, 2000 11:01:00 AM)

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 11:01:41 AM)
thats ok

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 11:01:51 AM)
I have about ten more mins. than i need to go

gplpn (ID=80) (Oct 24, 2000 11:02:47 AM)
Back to the fm trainer I have to be an advocate for Mary Im calling the schhol today tofind out about one

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 11:03:23 AM)
I would also talk directly to the school districts audiologist

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 11:03:56 AM)
the school will be probably have to get in touch with the audiologist anyway.

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 11:04:20 AM)
did you get a report from the audiologist

gplpn (ID=80) (Oct 24, 2000 11:04:43 AM)
Thanj you for the help Im will talk with them and find out about getting one for her. Yes I got the report

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 11:05:08 AM)
did it say anything about recommending the trainer

gplpn (ID=80) (Oct 24, 2000 11:06:45 AM)
It didnt say

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 11:07:06 AM)
i would still ask the question

gplpn (ID=80) (Oct 24, 2000 11:07:18 AM)
it was just a computer read out

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 11:08:03 AM)
my child's report was direct recommendations to help my child in the classroom

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 11:08:44 AM)
i'm not the expert on capd, but i do know the trainer has been a big help for my child

gplpn (ID=80) (Oct 24, 2000 11:08:57 AM)
I will be phoning the district audiolist today THANKS

Sissy (ID=79) (Oct 24, 2000 11:09:17 AM)

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 9:13:33 PM)
The conference was very informative...they pretty much were speaking to the school, teachers, SLP's, OT's, etc...but gave them lots of info to think about, and take back to their schools...our only concern was, WILL THEY USE IT?!?!

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:13:55 PM)
being the chatmaster, mine automatically is saved......makes it easy for me and i figured the confused duck was a good look for me.

have some great news to tell the world. Today my daughter, who has been having difficulties with reading comp, came home from school so excited about passing her very first accelerated reader test. I have been on cloud nine. She is in the 6th grade and has never tried to take an accelerated reader test since 4th grade for the fear of failing.

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:15:53 PM)
Faith I felt very bad that I missed you yesterday....

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 9:16:05 PM)
Heck, go! Make a day of it...so what if they miss a day of school... when will they see something like this again? I'd say go for it...if you don't mind the drive...AGAIN!!!

dinomum (ID=92) (Oct 24, 2000 9:16:10 PM)

Tammy (ID=99) (Oct 24, 2000 9:24:02 PM)
actually, other than him sleeping all day and not having the energy to do his homework that wasn't too bad... the worst part was trying to keep him in the house and not letting him play.

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 9:25:28 PM)
Faith....it is an AWESOME school!!!! Did you read in the paper today that the school just won $300,000.00 fromthe golf tourny yesterday?!?!?!?!?! YEEEE-HAAA!!!!!!!!!

dinomum (ID=92) (Oct 24, 2000 9:32:52 PM)
It meant that I could quantify the delay of auditory and visual

Tammy (ID=99) (Oct 24, 2000 9:33:15 PM)

Oke-dokey!

Tammy (ID=99) (Oct 24, 2000 9:37:08 PM)
no, not me. cj goes back to his pediatrician on the 31st. she is (hopefully) going to give us a referral for a speech and language evaluation and a neurological eval too. he's already had the psychological eval done.

dinomum (ID=92) (Oct 24, 2000 9:37:34 PM)
what does the neurological evaluation show

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 9:37:52 PM)
we meet the neurologist Monday what should we ask about?

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:38:16 PM)
we've not seen a neurologist so im not sure about that kathy

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 9:38:16 PM)
Who was Sarah's initial aud.? Dr. M?

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 9:38:36 PM)
I have a question... Does anyone have experience with sending their child to a special private school over the traditional public school? Do they work better for CAPD kids?

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:38:37 PM)
no Patti Shelly-Lohman at Amelia Island

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:38:54 PM)

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 9:39:10 PM)
I'm sorry I missed this AM...I bet it was great too! =(

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:39:30 PM)
it was a good chat.

faith (ID=98) (Oct 24, 2000 9:39:36 PM)
we are in public also, but have a very good principal

Tammy (ID=99) (Oct 24, 2000 9:39:52 PM)
to be quite honest with you, i'm not sure what it's for other than to test for other problems. however, cj had some other things going on and his school child study team, as well as others i've talked too, have all recommended neurological eval.

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:40:05 PM)
Sis have you signed up for the Be-A-Friend Program through the NCAPD? We are working on teaming up individuals in different areas.........program is just getting underway

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 9:40:14 PM)

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:41:22 PM)
Sis the membership is optional as a way to support the NCAPD, but youdo not have to be a member to join the Be-A_Friend program

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 9:41:29 PM)
And honest....just kidding!

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:41:47 PM)

dinomum (ID=92) (Oct 24, 2000 9:41:57 PM)

Don't rush....WHEN you have time, THAT'S when you do it!

Tammy (ID=99) (Oct 24, 2000 9:42:10 PM)
dinomum, where are you exactly?

dinomum (ID=92) (Oct 24, 2000 9:42:35 PM)
Got any time, patience or tact for sale - I'm in short supply usually!!! LOL

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:42:37 PM)
the goal of the Be-A-Friend program is start pairing up individuals and hopefully add enough to start a small local support group...but we have to start somewhere!!

dinomum (ID=92) (Oct 24, 2000 9:42:49 PM)
Sydney Australia

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:42:57 PM)
Deb if you wait til i have time you'll be in trouble! *L*

dinomum (ID=92) (Oct 24, 2000 9:43:32 PM)
How do your husbands relate to these speacial kids?

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 9:43:34 PM)
*LOL*....like you have sooooooo much spare time, right?!

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 9:43:44 PM)
will be a friend program be able to tell me if there already is a local support group?

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:44:07 PM)
Sis we are not aware of any local support groups as of yet, but are looking to start some...

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:44:29 PM)
i'm very lucky dinomum...my husband is wonderful and very supportive

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 9:44:44 PM)
thank you, debbie

faith (ID=98) (Oct 24, 2000 9:44:45 PM)
mine is too

Tammy (ID=99) (Oct 24, 2000 9:44:48 PM)
clif is pretty good with him now...but when he was first diagnosed and before we finally realized what we were dealing with he was kind of hard on him.

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 9:44:50 PM)
mine is crazy about my son...

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:45:00 PM)
sis i am not saying there are not any groups yet..but we are not aware of them.....

dinomum (ID=92) (Oct 24, 2000 9:45:16 PM)
Lucky you ... mine acknowledges its there but thinks i carry on and doesnt want to know to much as it is to scarey!

faith (ID=98) (Oct 24, 2000 9:45:17 PM)
he often has more patience than I do

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 9:45:54 PM)
dinomum....my husband took a loooong while before he thought anything was 'really' wrong. But now, he's great! I think guys have a harder time accepting news like this...

Tammy (ID=99) (Oct 24, 2000 9:45:55 PM)
clif loves cj but, because cj is the oldest, he expects alot out of him. he also thinks i baby him...

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:45:57 PM)
my husband use to try and help out with the chats when i was working..he's a blessing!!

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 9:46:14 PM)
It seems to me there are a lot of unanswered questions regarding CAPD in the medical field... Like what causes it, how to treat it, etc. I realize Debbie is trying to get it more widely known. How big a problem is CAPD.?

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 9:46:37 PM)
very true peggy

dinomum (ID=92) (Oct 24, 2000 9:46:46 PM)
Maybe i'm being unfare to him but I find that he suffers from "kid overload" He has a preety stressful job and travels and works long hours. Its hard to come home to difficult children

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 9:47:16 PM)
I read an article that many ADD/ADHD children are misdiagnosed

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:47:18 PM)
Peggy there was a story on CBS evening news lately that interviewed Nancy Kraus....her stats showed that approximately 1/3 of all children with learning disabilities probably had and auditory processing problem

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 9:47:44 PM)
the problem these children have is actually CAPD?

dinomum (ID=92) (Oct 24, 2000 9:47:44 PM)
I saw some article the other day that said 20%

Dorien (ID=100) (Oct 24, 2000 9:47:44 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 208.199.21.185 )

Tammy (ID=99) (Oct 24, 2000 9:47:56 PM)
clif is disabled and home all the time. however, he still has trouble (sometimes) with dealing with cj.

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 9:48:08 PM)
I know NW University was doing research... Have they published anything yet?

Tammy (ID=99) (Oct 24, 2000 9:48:12 PM)
he hates repeating things!!!!

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:48:20 PM)
this was a huge statistic!!!! and i think it went along ways to helping promote apd.

dinomum (ID=92) (Oct 24, 2000 9:48:41 PM)
My daughter has an ADD diagnosis but the primary problem is the SID and the biggest problem now in it is the CAPD

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:49:04 PM)
There are several universities doing research on capd at this time...dr moncrieff at the u of f is also doing research

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 9:49:06 PM)
But, he has to remember, they are his children too. We Moms have stressful days, everyday too...we're usually the ones who are with the kids most of the time, help w/ the homework, cook the dinner, do the laundry, and most of us work a 'real job' on top of all that and more, too!

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 9:49:07 PM)
Who is Nancy Kraus?

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 9:49:26 PM)
your absolutely right deb

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 9:49:34 PM)
How is Dr. Moncrieff's research going?

faith (ID=98) (Oct 24, 2000 9:49:45 PM)
we had a problem getting anyone to do any further testing on Brendon Finally went to the insurance company

dinomum (ID=92) (Oct 24, 2000 9:49:48 PM)
does he have a web page?

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:50:07 PM)
Nancy Kraus is an audiologist who's done extensive reserach on capd..i believe in NY..but dont hold me to that part

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:50:40 PM)
dr moncrieff is working on her research now....not sure how far she is from publishing anything yet.....she is on the board of directors for the NCAPD

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 9:51:19 PM)
can anyone tell me if there are any other test I should pursue having done for my child who has capd?

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 9:51:24 PM)
Women can handle more on our plates then men can...they tend to shun the 'bad stuff' away...don't know how, or want to know how to deal w/ tough situations. A lot of it is denial too. And that can linger for a looong time...unfortunately! =(

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 9:51:40 PM)
Dinomum, my son was thought to have ADD at first, now they say it's CAPD. We keep working....

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:52:05 PM)
hey Dorien..didnt see you sneak in

Dorien (ID=100) (Oct 24, 2000 9:52:25 PM)
Hi Debbie how are you tonight

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 9:52:30 PM)
Debbie, Can you keep us posted about her research...

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:52:38 PM)
Sis that will really depend on what tests were done the first time and how long ago they were done..

dinomum (ID=92) (Oct 24, 2000 9:52:58 PM)
I was lucky - I had hte CAPD diagnosis 1st and then when we couldnt make any progress where we thought we ought to we ended up with the other

Tammy (ID=99) (Oct 24, 2000 9:52:58 PM)
sorry, but i'm going to have to go. good night all!

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 9:52:59 PM)
yes i will peggy..im in touch with dr m on a regular basis

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:04:33 PM)
our district does not recognise CAPd and their audiologist is not allowed to test for it...Will Dr. M?

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:04:54 PM)
Sis...he just started using it a few months ago...shortly after school started. His teacher and Travis, both thinks it helps.

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 10:04:59 PM)
kathy, a fm trainer is used by the teacher using a mic, and the child wearing a headset

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:05:20 PM)
how do we get one?

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 10:05:26 PM)
so the teacher can directly speak into the child's ears

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 10:05:37 PM)
throught your school district

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:05:55 PM)
How Expensive are fm trainers, and how old is your child deb?

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 10:06:04 PM)
no cost to us

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:06:05 PM)
Unfortunately, through the school distirict...sometimes NOT EASY !!!!

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:06:05 PM)
how is FastForward, are they doing it the same time as going to school?

Dorien (ID=100) (Oct 24, 2000 10:06:41 PM)
That is what I am working on now

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:06:46 PM)
Travis is 8, and in 2nd grade....price depends on the one you get...

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 10:06:57 PM)
wow, deb

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 10:07:08 PM)
deb, did you have to buy one

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:07:24 PM)
dorien, are you going through the school?

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:07:26 PM)
Deb, is your son self conscious wearing one?

Dorien (ID=100) (Oct 24, 2000 10:07:44 PM)
yes my Ins will not cover it now.

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:07:53 PM)
They also have individual headsets...which is actually what Travis uses...much cheaper, and we just bought it ourselves at Radio Shack...around $60.00 total I think.

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:08:16 PM)
Karen...no, not at all. He thinks it's pretty cool.

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 10:08:29 PM)
i see we are blessed, to have a school district provide us with one.

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:08:34 PM)
And the other kids don't bother him about it or tease him.

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:08:36 PM)
our shcool said it's a hour and half per day & can't do it during the regular school year

faith (ID=98) (Oct 24, 2000 10:09:29 PM)
good night all

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:09:34 PM)
Sis...yes, you are blessed. Not everyone has a school district willing to put out the cash...

Dorien (ID=100) (Oct 24, 2000 10:09:38 PM)
I just gave the school some info on it today but they are looking at the $$$

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:09:44 PM)
Night Faith....

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:09:47 PM)
Beth, My school isn't doing it yet. Some schools are... I am going to try to see if I can convince them to try it. Otherwise, I may have to do it in the summer.

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:09:51 PM)
Deb, has your son seen DR M

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:10:15 PM)
our school offers it but only in the summer breaks

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:10:26 PM)
Kathy....No...but he is going to see Dr. Hall at Shands next month...can't wait!!!!!

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:10:48 PM)
Do they have a lot of kids on the summer program Beth?

Dorien (ID=100) (Oct 24, 2000 10:10:49 PM)
If I could get in any time without a fight I would jump on it

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:10:54 PM)
i'm back..sorry for delays

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:10:59 PM)
Do you think DrM will give us remediation ideas?

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:11:11 PM)
I'm concerned that using an fm trainer will allow my son to rely on an outside source, and he won't learn to focus himself. By the way, who is Dr. M?

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:11:47 PM)
Kathy...after results are in, she should be able to give some remediation ideas, right Debbie?

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:11:48 PM)
Dr M is Dr Deborah Moncrieff form the U of F in Gainesville..she is on the Board of Directors for the NCAPD...

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:11:51 PM)
i didn't know about until after we had already made vacation plans. his SLP would of put him in it but was too late

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:12:06 PM)
yes Kathy or is necessary she will refer you to an slp

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:12:52 PM)
we are going to year-round school so not sure how he can get it now.

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:12:52 PM)
Karen an Fm trainer is not for every child....it depends on what areas a child struggles in and you are right..you dont want the child to become dependent.

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:12:53 PM)
Fast forward is available in a home study format for under $100 The preschool version for one child is 49.00

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:13:14 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 63.27.149.226 )

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:13:23 PM)
Hi Pam.......

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:13:26 PM)
hi Pam..How are you tonigth?

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:13:31 PM)
Hi Everyone

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:13:37 PM)
hello, pam

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:13:47 PM)
Kathy, I wasnt aware of that... How do I get it?

Dorien (ID=100) (Oct 24, 2000 10:14:00 PM)
Debbie I want you to know I was able to give one of my mothers info on CAPD and ADHD due to you.

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:14:02 PM)
I'm doing okay

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:14:10 PM)
Kathy, I've never heard of it being that low either

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:14:26 PM)
I found this website this weekend, I'm not sure, but it sounds like my daughter

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:14:57 PM)
Dorien that is fantastic!!!! *big smiles*....that's the way to create the public awareness that is needed....thank you for sharing the into with others Dorien

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:15:18 PM)
Pam, has your daughter been tested for capd yet?

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:15:43 PM)
no, I just talked with a psychologist on Monday about her, and her first instinct was CAPD

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:15:50 PM)
this was before I even mentioned it

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:16:04 PM)
did the psych recommend testing by an aud?

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:16:16 PM)
did everyone have their children tested through school or separately?

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:16:29 PM)
our testing was done privately both times

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:16:32 PM)
actually the first thing we are doing is a CAPD scan

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:16:41 PM)
i still can't get my son dx

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:16:47 PM)
Privately.......an another testing coming up next month.

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:16:50 PM)
Peggy, info@scilearn.comor www.scientificlearning.com

Dorien (ID=100) (Oct 24, 2000 10:16:52 PM)
Privatly

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:16:55 PM)
what does everyone recommend?

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 10:17:03 PM)
my child was tested through school

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:17:18 PM)
it really depends on the district you are in ....

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:17:40 PM)
an audiologist as in hearing test? She had one last year when I thougth she had problems

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:17:44 PM)
Your insurance may cover private testing, call them.

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:17:47 PM)
Kathy, Thanks, I'll check it out.. :)

Dorien (ID=100) (Oct 24, 2000 10:17:50 PM)
Good night all

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:17:58 PM)
good night Dorien!!

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:18:00 PM)
Night Dorien..

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:18:03 PM)
good to see you tonight

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:18:04 PM)
night!

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:18:32 PM)
someone recommended a speech pathologist, I know of many in my neighborhood alone, an acquaintance of mine is one, I'm going to call her

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:19:06 PM)
Pam, an audiologist will do a hearing test to rule out hearing problems, but is able to evaluate and diagnose capd

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:19:23 PM)
should that be my first step?

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:20:02 PM)
Yes...but MAKE SURE the audiologist you use is familar with CAPD!! Very important!!

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:20:04 PM)
I am a firm believer you really should see an audiologist...many of the tests for capd are done in a sound booth in order to properly test...

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:20:26 PM)
I apologize for all the questions, but am so confused about all this, I KNOW in my heart that there is something

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:20:35 PM)
lots of audiologist will not test for CAPD, the one i had wouldn't - just said my son had significant processing problems

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:20:47 PM)
Pam do not apologize!!! That's what this chat is for!!

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:21:10 PM)
Debbie's right Pam!!!We're all here to help each other!

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:21:11 PM)
now if they do indeed say she has CAPD, do they contact the school

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:21:12 PM)
Beth many audioloigsts are not familiar with the testing

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:21:37 PM)
How old is your child Pam?

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:21:40 PM)
We are all here fir help and insight

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:21:43 PM)
thanks everyone, I feel like outside of my husband I can't talk to anyone about this

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:21:51 PM)
Pam-A speech ther. can follow up with tx and can do in depth evals. in areas the audiologist has targeted as problems.

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:21:51 PM)
she will be 7 next month

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 10:22:06 PM)
Pam, it was my childs 4th grade teacher that recommend my child be tested

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:22:12 PM)
I had testing done by school 1st and am seeing an audiologist this comming Monday.

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:22:12 PM)
i know, been having a hard time to get someone to dx my son. with our ins, we have to go via primary care doctor and he told me to get a new doctor

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:22:18 PM)
I posted a huge (too long) message on the board, but noone's answered yet

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:23:12 PM)
she is extremely bright, no speech problems, but the focusing problem is very bad, it seems that the further in school the more we notice it

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 10:23:28 PM)
I would venture to think that a school audiologist should be able to test for CAPD, although i could be wrong!!

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:23:45 PM)
Her teacher does not know a lot about CAPD but everyone so far connected with the school has been wonderful and supportive

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:23:52 PM)
but only if you are in a district that allows it

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:23:53 PM)
Sis there are some tests that some school audiologists use...but not usually as comprehensive

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:24:07 PM)
Well all, I think I'm going to head out...have many hours of photo pages to do yet. Debbie...I will make another copy of T.'s school report we did, and get it out to you in the next couple of day...K?

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:24:16 PM)
been to a audiologist and neurologist and still don't have a clear dx - except developmently delayed

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:24:16 PM)
SIs, I'm going to say no on that, because she tested in school last year and being that everyone is aware of this now, they would have mentioned it

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:24:46 PM)
I am going to try to find an audiologist and start there in addition to getting the scan done next week

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:25:05 PM)
I know my school tested my daughter and found she has no problems in auditory processing..yet the audiologist report and school liscensed psychologist show differently

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:25:07 PM)
Good Luck Pam!!!

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:25:16 PM)
Is everyone's child pretty much unaware that there is a problem?

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:25:21 PM)
\thanks Peggy

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:25:28 PM)
My son knows he is different...

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:25:30 PM)
the scan is a good start..will let you know whether or not to persue the audiological eval

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:25:41 PM)
It hurts his self-esteem... :(

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:25:44 PM)
what kind of scan

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:26:03 PM)
my daughter is very aware....she knows it..but she thinks it is the way God made her special and unique

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:26:18 PM)
and she's very special =)

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:26:31 PM)
pam, my son (he's in 3rd grade) is beginning to be aware of his problem (had parent/teacher conference yesterday & she mentioned it too)

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:26:50 PM)
The SCAN is like a preliminary testing for capd.......indicates if further testing is warranted

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:26:51 PM)
My psychologist has some kind of auditory processing scan (a test) that they do in the office, all oral I believe. An associate of hers who deals specifically with our school district will administer it.

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:27:03 PM)
Travis is aware as well. Handles it pretty well, most of the time.

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 10:27:14 PM)
we feel the same way about our daughter, she is such a tremendous blessing to us.

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:27:18 PM)
Pam, I have been working of resolving my son's problem for the past year almost. We are not quite there yet.. Debbie's web site has been a great help to me. Just don't give up until you're satisfied you have the right help for your child. :)

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:28:08 PM)
We had ours last night. She is totally unaware. For instance, the teacher will give her instructions, she will do something different, when I ask her about it, if she has problems understanding, she is very clear and comfortable that there is no problem understanding. She does not need help in the classroom.

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:28:09 PM)
I was sharing in this mornings chat..that a few weeks ago Sarah was at church on sunday night in children's church and was having a hard time understanding ms. grace...so she raised her hand and asked if she could move closer since she was having trouble understanding due to her capd.......

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:28:15 PM)
my son seems to have problems in math, is this more common in CAPD kids?

Sis (ID=97) (Oct 24, 2000 10:28:39 PM)
good night all

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:28:50 PM)
good night Sis

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:28:59 PM)
I am glad in that respect that she is oblivious because it makes doing this all the more easier.

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:29:16 PM)
Time for me to go...Debbie...I'll make another copy of the school report and get it out in a few days.

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:29:22 PM)
I was so proud and happy that Sarah is beginning to see when she is having trouble and she self corrected the situation...

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:29:30 PM)
She is a great kid, very happy, outgoing, very active

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:29:32 PM)
Deb thank you!!! have a great night

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:29:41 PM)
How long has it taken her to get where she is Debbie?

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:29:51 PM)
Good night Deb, thanks

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:29:59 PM)
she was diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago....

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:30:03 PM)
Will talk to you soon Debbie! HAD A GREAT TIME YESTERDAY!!!!!

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:30:11 PM)
I did too!!!!!

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:30:17 PM)
Does she attend special classes in school?

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:30:20 PM)
Tell your mom hi for me!

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:30:32 PM)
no..she is in regular class.......

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:30:47 PM)
Will do....e-mail her....she's waiting to hear from you.

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:30:49 PM)
no extra or special help at all?

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:31:05 PM)
do CAPD kids have more problems in math?

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:31:14 PM)
my psychologist also mentioned the possibility of medication, this makes me nervous.

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:31:21 PM)
Sarah and I talk alot about her capd...you have to realize that capd has become almost a way of life for us...with her modifications in school and the website and nonprofit..it's changed our life alot

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:31:37 PM)
Beth..that depends on the type of deficits the child has...sarah is very sharp at math

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:31:39 PM)
Beth, from the stuff I read, reading and math are two of the subjects they have a hard time with.

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:31:53 PM)
will do Deb..i promise!

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:32:17 PM)
Pam I have never heard of medication being effective with capd..be cautious..

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:32:19 PM)
my son didn't have any trouble w/reading (some mistakes due to visual processing) but math has been very hard for him

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:32:39 PM)
Hey Debbie, you are helping to change a lot of other lives for the better with this site and chat. :)

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:32:51 PM)
Pam, sarah recieves some modifications on a 504 plan..most of her help is at home

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:32:51 PM)
oh I am, she wouldn't be prescribing anyway, but I'm just starting to gather info about all of this.

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:33:01 PM)
pam, could they be suggesting ADD or ADHD (i know, my school district mentioned it)

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:33:06 PM)
Peggy..thank you...that's what it's all about!

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:33:18 PM)
Your site was the first site I found I can't thank you enough

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:33:34 PM)
Me too.

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:33:41 PM)
Pam...Tarvis takes ritalin...have tried him on and off for a few years...really seems to make a big difference with him, when he's on it... and they totally ruled out ADD/ADHD.

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:34:16 PM)
Beth, it's been mentioned briefly but she's still very young to be diagnosed. Also her teacher says that she doesn't see anything that would indicate ADD or ADHD but admits that she is not an expert. This is all based on her experience

I know many of those who coem to the chat are aware of why i started the chat..but for those of you who aren't...i spent 1 1/2 years looking for another parent of a child with capd......when i started this site it was to keep info for me..i never dreamt there were so many people who had the same problem...

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:34:33 PM)
Debbie, since you know so much about capd, i was wondering if you know any kids who have "outgrown" their capd. I read that 60% of children dx with capd, outgrow it.

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:34:49 PM)
it's amazng isn't it

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:35:03 PM)
Believe me....I am not an advocate for meds...but, I've seen what he does, and doesn't do when he's on...

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:35:15 PM)
karen, wow - i've never heard that. would be great to think that could happen

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:35:27 PM)
Well it is late here I stopped by on a chance, thank you all so much. Are you all pretty much here every Tuesday?

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:35:28 PM)
Karen, personally i dont know any....but i've heard the same statistics....

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:35:36 PM)
every tuesday Pam!!

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:35:54 PM)
I will be back, at least I have a place to start which is something. Thanks again

Deb (ID=94) (Oct 24, 2000 10:35:56 PM)
Night Pam...ok....I'm REALLY going now!!

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:35:57 PM)
Take care Pam.

Pam (ID=103) (Oct 24, 2000 10:36:00 PM)
Good night all.

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:36:01 PM)
I have every confidence inthe world that Sarah will overcome her capd!

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:36:04 PM)
goodnight Pam

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:36:09 PM)
Bye Deb...

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:36:10 PM)
Is there a chat scheduled with Dr. J in the near future?

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:36:13 PM)
bye Deb

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:36:15 PM)
from what i've read of LD's, i'm sure my son has more than CADP

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:36:40 PM)
Deb, im not sure if dr j will be in next week..i think it will be two weeks since he was in today...

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:37:05 PM)
Is it true that CAPD can exist with other LD's and ADD/HD...

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:37:07 PM)
oops,.,that was for you Karen

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:37:15 PM)
yes peggy...

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:37:16 PM)
What day and time does he come?

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:37:30 PM)
often capd can be the underlying factor for other ld's

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:37:44 PM)
he's here every other tuesday from 8:30 to 10 am EST

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:37:47 PM)
morning chats.

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:37:53 PM)
It can be really confusing.... Trying to figure out whas exactly is a childs problem.

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:38:06 PM)
are auditory and visual processing problems together lots of times?

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:38:06 PM)
EXTREMELY confusing!

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:38:37 PM)
Beth they are two seperate problems that can coincide

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:38:40 PM)
I hope the people doing research will soon come up with some good answers.

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:38:56 PM)
I am surprised they don't have any yet.

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:39:11 PM)
yes, I was told to have my son's eyes examined by a pediatric oopthmalogist

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:39:22 PM)
so do i Peggy...the problem is getting the professionals to agree what is and what isnt' capd...

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:39:27 PM)
i feel my son has both but hard to get any dx so far. he goes to speech and OT (has since he was 3/4yrs old and he's 9 now)

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:39:44 PM)
Does Dr. M have any idea's on that Debbie???

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:40:21 PM)
Beth, my son is turning 8. Has had speech and OT since he was 41/2.

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:40:27 PM)
Dr M approaches capd from a neurophysiological point of view...

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:40:48 PM)
peggy, is he dx has CAPD?

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:40:57 PM)
How does that work??? Like brain processing?

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:41:37 PM)
we've talked about her research but it's hard for me to explain......

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:41:41 PM)
Beth. Just had CAPD dx this summer through school testing. He is going to DuPont this Monday for 2nd opinion privately.

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:42:02 PM)
did you say he has other issues too?

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:42:06 PM)
yes it looks at what is happening in the brain when the auditory stimuli is being processed...

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:42:24 PM)
how about i invite her and see if she's available to come to an evening chat again.....

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:42:26 PM)
Does Dr. M speak publicly about this? Any public forum to hear her?

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:42:31 PM)
it's hard to follow everyone...

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:42:36 PM)
OK. That sound great Debbie!!!

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:42:49 PM)
Good idea Debbie

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:43:03 PM)
Dr M has recently done some public speaking on capd and her research

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:43:13 PM)
Beth, He has receptive/expressive language delay. Fine motor skills delay. Allergies.

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:43:28 PM)
I"ll get in touch with her and see when she may be available..i dont know her schedule...

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:43:54 PM)
sounds like my son....his OT suggested sensory intergration problems.

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:44:01 PM)
Thanks Debbie... Does Dr. M have copies of her research???

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:44:10 PM)
ladies im going to excuse myself for the evening...i'm beat and think i'm headed out of town again in the morning..

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:44:32 PM)
goodnight, debbie. this has been great

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:44:41 PM)
part of the notes from her presentation are on the U of F website under her name...

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:44:46 PM)
Beth, I'm not sure about sensory intergration, he may have problems there too..

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:44:57 PM)
let me look for the addy quick

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:45:06 PM)
Thank you , DEbbie talk next week

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:45:16 PM)
Good night all

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:45:18 PM)
Good Night Debbie... Thank you very much as always... You are very helpful!!! :)

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:45:20 PM)
well, when you mentioned fine motor skills....my son has problems w/both fine and gross

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:46:03 PM)
Beth- what age level is he testing at, I am an OT.

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:46:05 PM)
Beth, my son's gross motor are OK. Not great...

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:46:32 PM)
usually 3 years behind (he just turned 9)

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:46:58 PM)
Karen, What does an OT do that is difffernt than a PT my son has been getting ot at school, but the is no no comunication with the ot

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:47:37 PM)
Did your ot do a full si eval. on him. Si is very complex, and you need someone very well trained in it, to diagnose and treat.

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:47:42 PM)
he has very bad handwriting (margins are bad, goes down on the pages - they mentioned mid-line crossover problems)

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:47:58 PM)
sensory intergration?

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:48:06 PM)
Has he been tested for CAPD ?

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:48:27 PM)
karen, his last IEP recommended testing for SI but never heard back if they would agree to it

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:49:00 PM)
his OT recommended it

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:49:36 PM)
Kathy- there are very definite boundaries between ot's and pt's in the school system. Ot's work on fine motor skills for school readiness, ie, handwriting, while pt's do more gross motor, ie, if a child has a problem being mobile around school.

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:49:43 PM)
my school district does not believe in sensory intergration problems the OT who did his eval. was not affliated with the schools, the schools gave him ot an the basis of her report

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:50:01 PM)
i only know about CAPD via the internet - he's been in speech since he was 3 and no-one has ever told me about it

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:50:20 PM)
Thank you karen

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:50:56 PM)
Beth, I would definitely follow up, and find out if and when he is being tested for si problems. If he really has si issues, he can really benefit from therapy.

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:51:57 PM)
he receives OT once a week w/school district. our private ins had been no help at all (we plan on changing our coverage)

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:52:01 PM)
Your welcome Kathy. you should really demand to be in contact with anyone who treats your child, I work in the school system, and have always been in contact with any parent who wanted to contact me

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:52:19 PM)
http://web.clas.ufl.edu/users/moncrief/abstracts.html took me forever but here's dr m's research info

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:52:39 PM)
Thanks Debbie. Take care!!! :)

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:52:43 PM)
remember she's a teaching research audiologist so part of the info is class related...

debbie (ID=96) (Oct 24, 2000 10:53:06 PM)
goodnight everyone..see you next week or chat with you through email if i can be of help....night night

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:53:16 PM)
bye

Peggy (ID=93) (Oct 24, 2000 10:53:16 PM)
Good Night!

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:53:26 PM)
good nite.

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:54:13 PM)
The school he is at for his communication disorder is terrible. You cant make an appointment to see the pricncipal, talk to her on the phone, it took me three weeks to get the ot to call me and she didnt have time totalk to me. He remains at this public school solely because the class room teacher is a speech path and there are only six kids in the class

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:54:35 PM)
He onlyu goes two mornings a week

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:54:49 PM)
I feel terrible for the kids who attend there full tme

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:55:56 PM)
When I have a big problem that needs to be handled I call the superintentants office and speak directly to the coordinator for special ed

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:56:05 PM)
I would show up at his therapy, and ask her face to face when it is a good time for her to talk to you about your child.

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:57:03 PM)
might just have to do that

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:57:21 PM)
well, i need to get off. i've enjoyed the info

kathy (ID=95) (Oct 24, 2000 10:57:47 PM)
Good night-hopw to see all of you nest weeek

karen (ID=101) (Oct 24, 2000 10:57:54 PM)
good luck kathy. I must go to sleep. Speak to you all soon. Good nite.

Beth (ID=102) (Oct 24, 2000 10:57:57 PM)
