Hi Carol....thought we'd lost you!

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:25:23 PM)
Had to go tuck in my youngest, sorry

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:25:46 PM)
Debbie left a few minutes ago to go to bed...she had a very long day. I told her I'd stay in.

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:25:50 PM)
No one else chatting tonight?

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:26:05 PM)
So far, no...I'm surprized.

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:26:14 PM)
Usually very busy.

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:26:25 PM)
Your son is Travis, right?

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:26:36 PM)
Yes, especially the last few weeks, it has been real busy in here.

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:26:58 PM)
Yepper....the sleeping Travis right now! *L*

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:27:22 PM)
I thought mine were asleep, too until Shannen came up complaining

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:27:42 PM)
I hope all is well....she's not sick is she?

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:27:53 PM)
Just lonely, Krystina fell asleep already

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:28:05 PM)
Only one of your kids have CAPD?

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:28:19 PM)
Boy, how dare she fall asleep on her sister!

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:28:29 PM)
That's what she thought, too

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:28:43 PM)
Yes, Travis is 8, and I have a 6 yr. old as well.

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:28:59 PM)
How old are yours?

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:29:00 PM)
Krystina is 7, Shannen will be 6 next month.

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:29:38 PM)
We did them close, didn't we? Is it just Shannen with APD?

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:30:05 PM)
No, Krystie has the APD, I don't think Shanney does but she 's not picking up reading very well. I hope it's just the age

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:32:02 PM)
Oh, that's right....sorry. Could be her age...Corey didn't start reading reading, until Jan. of last year, when we moved to Fl., and he is now in 1st grade, reading at 2nd grade level....I wouldn't worry as of yet. Do you see anything else that would concern you at this point?

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:33:12 PM)
No, I really don't. They are so totally different. Although, Krystie is in the 2nd and just started reading at the 4th grade level. So reading isn't an issue for her. But Shanney doesn't question or repeat like Krystie does.

(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 172.147.73.115)

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:34:55 PM)
WOW....that's wonderful...4th grade level reading! I wouldn't be too concerned I don't think at this point. As you said, they are so totally different. And that also means, they will probably learn differently as well.

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:35:12 PM)
Hi kme3856082

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:35:17 PM)
Hi kme....how are you tonight?

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:35:33 PM)
Hello everyone

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:35:42 PM)
Yeah, deb, she reads well but can't tell me what she read.

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:35:49 PM)
I am good and yourself?

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:35:55 PM)
She says she knows.

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:36:06 PM)
It's kind of quiet in here tonight kme....

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:36:48 PM)
I would keep questioning her about what she read....make sure she really is getting it.

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:37:06 PM)
I do, I think she is

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:37:12 PM)
I have never been here before I have a 7 year old and found your web site online after we have been trying to figure out what is wrong with him at school. I have a bunch of ?

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:37:14 PM)
Do you have a child with APD kme?

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:37:34 PM)
Has he been tested, kme...?

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:37:45 PM)
What is he struggling with, etc?

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:38:43 PM)
We are having a heck of a time getting that done at first teh teacher told us Add or AdHD but when they went to fill out the paper work they said he shows none of those behaviors.

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:39:00 PM)
What behaviors does he show?

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:40:09 PM)
He all of teh sudden in class seems lost and does not understand what is going on and it is not everyday. They call it a blank stare. He does above average on all individual testing. I am lost

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:40:11 PM)

Hello Diane

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:40:25 PM)
Hi Diane,

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:40:26 PM)
Hi Diane...how are you?

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:40:49 PM)
Hi everyoe :) I'm doing okay and you ??

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:41:02 PM)
Krystie does above average on all testing, too except for the audio parts.

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:41:21 PM)
OK, thanks....jump on in Diane!

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:41:27 PM)
Are you all talking test results ?

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:41:30 PM)
How did any of you get your kids tested? They want me to pay 75 an hour to an educational evaluation and then maybe they would test him.

Jill (ID=35) (Feb 13, 2001 8:41:33 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 172.172.224.237)

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:41:42 PM)
Carol how did they test that part?

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:41:43 PM)
the school won't test him for you?

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:41:50 PM)
No they refuse

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:41:54 PM)
Hi Jill.....how are you tonight?

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:42:12 PM)
my son has not been thorougly tested for CAPD yet

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 8:42:15 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 209.255.210.184)

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:42:18 PM)
I'm not sure what the test was that they did, It was part of the school core eval. and the speech pathologist is the only one that found anything.

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:42:21 PM)
I have a meeting scheduled with a director of Special Education

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:42:27 PM)
Hi Rose...welcome.

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:42:32 PM)
Neither has my daughter, Diane'

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:42:45 PM)

Jill (ID=35) (Feb 13, 2001 8:42:49 PM)
Good How was this morning...It is too early in the morning for me---west coast time

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 8:42:51 PM)
Hi Deb its been awhile but I finally made a chat!

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:43:00 PM)
I have 3 tests with speech pathologists that all agree there is an audiological problem

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:43:20 PM)
kme...they should do the testing....I believe, if you, the parent, requests that they do testing, they have to.

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:43:20 PM)
Hi Rose

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:43:25 PM)
What do they do different at school if a child does have this?

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:43:39 PM)
Are you in a public school? kme

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:43:40 PM)

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:43:53 PM)
Jill...chat was good this AM....it was Dr. J's birthday.

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 8:44:05 PM)
I'm still struggling to get my son to wear and use hia assistive listening device in school.

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:44:11 PM)
I wish I could make the am chat :(

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:44:17 PM)
They have specialists if the child needs it and only special provisions in class for focas etc. if that's all the child needs

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:44:26 PM)
That is why i have that meeting scheduled. The teacher is very mean to my son when he expresses the blank stare and we really need to find some help for this kid

Jill (ID=35) (Feb 13, 2001 8:44:31 PM)
Has any one had a pyscho-educational testing done?

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:44:35 PM)
This is all in a public school, though

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:44:47 PM)

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:45:36 PM)

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 8:45:37 PM)
Where is everyone from? I am from PA

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:45:47 PM)

Jill (ID=35) (Feb 13, 2001 8:46:10 PM)
Also how old was your kids?

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:46:15 PM)
Rose we had that until teh end of last year when they felt he did not need specch or Ot any longer he did have delays that we started getting help with at age 3

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:46:36 PM)
I am in Rochester, NY

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:46:43 PM)
Krystie was 3 with problems noted and 6 when first formally tested

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:46:57 PM)
I had to have my son tested privately now I'm fighting for the CAPD testing

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 8:46:59 PM)
My son didn't get any help early on and since 1st grade I have been arguing, he is in 3rd grade now.

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:47:10 PM)
kme....my brother lives in Fairport! I just moved to Florida last Dec. from Ithaca, NY!!!

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:47:20 PM)
she's 7 now and still being tested , I finally just got an appt. with an audiologist in the summer

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:47:20 PM)
My son is 9 and in 3rd grade also

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:47:33 PM)
Wow that is only 40 minutes from here I live in Hamlin

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:47:49 PM)
Deb I bet you are enjoying teh nicer weather

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:48:10 PM)
My son is now 8, and we started the testing when he was 4, and got the APD dx when he was 4.11

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:48:31 PM)
So this is going to be an ongoing battle?

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:48:46 PM)
Has been for me

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:48:49 PM)
Me too

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:48:53 PM)
kme...too wild! Yes, that's one of the big reasons we got out of that nasty weather!

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:49:23 PM)
and I now work for the school district and they still are bsing me

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 8:49:44 PM)
I have four children my oldest son is 15 and has ADHD, my daughter is 12 and is dyslexic, my 8 year old son hasthe multiple problems. He has CAPD, ADHD, dyslexia, fine motor delays, visual perception problems, sensory issues, a language based LD, and vocal nodules. My 5 year old son is diagnosis free thank God!

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:49:53 PM)
kme....Unfortunately, yes. I've been doing it for 3 years, and you learn as you go....this is a great place to learn though!

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:50:05 PM)
kme... although her teacher knows her problem, she's still expected to perform at the level of the other kids and do the speed tests etc

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:50:20 PM)
That is why I am going to ped on Monday

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:50:24 PM)
Rose, you must be going in 3 directions all the time

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:50:25 PM)
The hardest part is I have a severe latex allergy and cannot accompany Nelson to school or any DR appointments. So when we have to do any of these things my hsuband has to take his vacation time it is very frustrating

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:50:46 PM)
My husband has that kme... it is such a problem

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 8:50:54 PM)
Don't feel bad, my son has an IEP and it is still next to impossible to get his teachers to understand his limitations.

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:50:56 PM)
Carol can she actually perform any of those tests

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:50:56 PM)
Were you a nurse or EMT?

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:51:04 PM)
minimally

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:51:05 PM)
a nurse

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:51:13 PM)
Rose my son has a ADD dx too but I am sceptical about that now, and i think he also has SI issues

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:51:15 PM)
He was an emt, I'm a nurse

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:51:28 PM)
What's si issues, diane

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:51:38 PM)
cool carol where do you work?

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 8:52:02 PM)
Diane my son takes Adderall for his ADHD and it really does help. If it didn't I too would be skeptical.

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:52:05 PM)
Sensory integration

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:52:09 PM)
Diane...I am taking my son for an SI eval next week. He gets OT and speech now...posibly language therapy soon as well.

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:52:22 PM)
Not working as of the moment, spending all free time at school trying to help out and see Krystie interact etc. I was a peritoneal dialysis nurse, visiting nursing and rehab hospital

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:53:02 PM)
Diane, how does that manifest itself. Would she hate to be touched or hugged?

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:53:09 PM)
Good for you Carol . I was working evenings to be home with the kids

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:53:47 PM)

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 8:53:49 PM)
I am trying to get my son OT, but the school is refusing at the moment. He gets speech already an they do not provide language therapy in our school. but he has had some privately.(our insurance only provides 8 weeks a year)

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:54:34 PM)
There is a wonderful book on SI...."The Out of Sync Child"...I met the author at a confrence a while ago...wonderful, and informative book!

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:54:41 PM)
Rose, your school doesn't provide for him to get it out of school? Like at another school?

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 8:54:48 PM)
Carol it can present itself in many ways.

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:55:03 PM)
Deb marvelous book :)

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:55:25 PM)
Yes, it is....I read and re-read a lot of it!

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 8:55:26 PM)
No I am sorry I meant the district doesn't provide it , they don't feel it is necessary. Dumb huh?

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:55:35 PM)
Carol there are many types of SI

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 8:56:09 PM)
If you want to know more about SI look it up on the web under search

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:56:10 PM)
That's too bad. I've hit many problems like that. She's not special needs but I'm told by the teacher she needs help with her handwriting and social skills. I guess I become the teacher.

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:56:27 PM)
The SI-OT that will be seeing my son, is great. I know she will be able to help him with his SI stuff.

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:56:59 PM)
I'm hoping that it will help my sons handwriting my sil is the OT

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:57:08 PM)

Hi terrie

social skills are one of my magor worries right now

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:57:38 PM)
We, the parents, DO become the teacher a lot of the time.

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:57:39 PM)
So an OT helps with handwriting but I'm told she doesn't need OT. Confused?

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:57:42 PM)
Hi terrie

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:57:51 PM)
Hi Terrie...welcome!

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:58:09 PM)

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:58:17 PM)
Yes, and OT can help with handwriting.

terrie (ID=37) (Feb 13, 2001 8:58:18 PM)
Hi, this is my first time, so I am a litle slow

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 8:58:19 PM)
I am planning to get my son a private OT evaluation to present to the school that will hopefully recommend he get services and why. The school's evaluation indicated he was on a 65 month level for fine motor manipulation and writing, nut even though he was actually 101 months old they said he needs no services.

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:58:45 PM)
rose what school system are you in ?

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:58:49 PM)
terrie...just take your time....feel free to jump in and ask any questions!

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:58:56 PM)
They allowed her to take her time, and she did well. Does your kids write well when they write slowly?

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 8:59:05 PM)
Philadelphia

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:59:10 PM)
Yes Nelson does

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 8:59:23 PM)
But Nelson still needs OT for writing, right?

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 8:59:24 PM)
My sons psycoed testing cost $750.00 and I paid for it

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:59:29 PM)
Wow that is hard

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 8:59:42 PM)
not according to school carol

terrie (ID=37) (Feb 13, 2001 8:59:42 PM)
My son has fine and gross motor delay. OT has helped him.

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 8:59:58 PM)
Yes..Travis' handwriting has improved A LOT since last school year...it's amazing it's the same kid writing!

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 9:00:10 PM)
SI is really fascinating stuff

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:00:12 PM)
why not request the testing be done by the school? It is free then.

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 9:00:28 PM)
He had the best work when he was home for teh first month of school because of a fractured femur

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 9:00:39 PM)
they refused me and I KNEW something was amiss

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:00:42 PM)
She does better at home too

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 9:00:43 PM)
He took his time and did not feel rushed

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:00:50 PM)
terrie...so does my son. He's been seeing an OT since he was 3.

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:00:54 PM)
If they refuse to test or you disagree witht the test results then you can request an IEE at public expense.

Actually, I'm not that Carol Susan

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:02:08 PM)

terrie (ID=37) (Feb 13, 2001 9:02:21 PM)
Yes, his writing is getting much better. We also have to do excercises at home.

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 9:02:22 PM)
carol all of this is starting to make sense I just need to get proper testing know what services or help he needs at home or at school and make him feel better. This darn teacher makes him so upset he comes home and calls me to his room and cries

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:02:26 PM)
Diane I understand I am learning as I go also and there is plenty to learn, I often wonder if i will ever fully understand the laws.

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:02:57 PM)
Krystie and I have spent many days and nights in tears, Deb and Debbie have been a life saver for us

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:03:07 PM)
I've made many mistakes along the way myself.

Diane (ID=34) (Feb 13, 2001 9:03:22 PM)
my school does provide but this was at the end of 1st grade and they wanted to retain him and test him in the fall ,... I said no way pass him and I will have him tested to prove i am right

terrie (ID=37) (Feb 13, 2001 9:03:28 PM)
My son also was getting really upset at school, we put him in private school and it has made a big difference.

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:03:33 PM)
Rose, you just keep asking questions and talking and it somehow comes together

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:03:36 PM)
Kme have you confronted this teacher?

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 9:03:42 PM)
So this is all normal . How do you handle the other kids at teh sme time and give them teh proper amount of attention

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:03:50 PM)
terrie, are you getting help in the private school

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:03:59 PM)
kme, you don't

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:04:00 PM)
Thanks you Carol...that was very nice of you to say. I think we all try to be life savers for each other.

terrie (ID=37) (Feb 13, 2001 9:04:12 PM)

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:04:36 PM)
With two other with issues it is difficult and I am spread way too thin. try taking on three different schools at once, that is where I am right now.

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 9:05:00 PM)
Yes on 2 occassions I have over the phone I think she knows I cannot enter the school and do know she attempted to label me as an uninvovlved parent

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:05:05 PM)
Rose, that's a tough task

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:06:04 PM)
You are pretty much house bound, kme?

terrie (ID=37) (Feb 13, 2001 9:06:12 PM)
I took him out of public school because he was so upset all of the time. His neurologist said that if the school would treat his CAPD, he would do much better. I just got tired of fighting them.

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:06:13 PM)
Rose...that is a lot. But, you do what you can, and the best you can.

kme3856082 (ID=33) (Feb 13, 2001 9:06:24 PM)
Everyone thankyou so much for all the help I need to go help my 5 year old hide from the monsters . Have a Happy Valentines day

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:06:32 PM)
Bye kme

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:06:37 PM)
My oldest was tested, but they haven't provided me with the results and it is over a month now. My daughter has been waiting for her testing since September and I filed a formal complaint against them.. I have been struggling with the 8 year olds for 3 years now, its getting better but we have a ways to go.

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:06:44 PM)
night kme....please come back...

terrie (ID=37) (Feb 13, 2001 9:07:39 PM)
Deb, I have a question

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:07:53 PM)
I'm finding I desperately need the CAPD diagnosis to help me.

Jill (ID=35) (Feb 13, 2001 9:07:53 PM)
You sound like me right now Diane----We are currently in private but moving him to public next year because they provide a better environment....Plus I'm find that the teachers maybe better prepared for a child that learns differently

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:08:04 PM)
I am tired too but have no other school options available, no funds and no one willing to take a child with so many problems to be addressed.

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:08:08 PM)
Rose....I would ring their phone EVERY day if you have to about getting the results. That's what I'm doing right now....I've been waiting over a month for Travis' language eval....and I have his IEP meeting next Tues., and no eval to look at!

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:08:22 PM)
go ahead terrie....

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:08:51 PM)
That's very true, Jill, around here the public are far better prepared

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:09:01 PM)
I call constantly and since it is a violation of our state laws I guess I have to file a formal complaint against his school too.

terrie (ID=37) (Feb 13, 2001 9:09:02 PM)
My son's neurologist diagnosed him with CAPD, he was also tested by a audiologist who stated he did not have CAPD. What do you think about that?

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:09:45 PM)
terrie, my speech pathologist told me that only an audiologist can diagnose CAPD. The rest can only assess and suggest it might be APD

Jill (ID=35) (Feb 13, 2001 9:09:46 PM)
Carol where are you from?

terrie (ID=37) (Feb 13, 2001 9:09:47 PM)
Rose Have you been on the wrightslaw website. It is very good at helping you with fighting the school system.

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:09:58 PM)
Massachusetts, 6 miles NOrth of Boston

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:10:06 PM)
I never heard of a neurologist diagnosing CAPD, I have heard them list it as a posssiblity and recommend further testing.

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:10:12 PM)
terrie...ONLY an audiologist can give an APD dx....and an audiologist who tests for, and knows about APD is who should do them.

terrie (ID=37) (Feb 13, 2001 9:10:54 PM)
My neuro said that there was no proof that a audiologist could test for CAPD

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:11:03 PM)
terrie...what kinds of tests did the aud. do? Did they use a sound booth?

terrie (ID=37) (Feb 13, 2001 9:11:12 PM)
Yes

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:11:22 PM)
terrie, that's what audiologists' jobs are

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:11:27 PM)
Well, I'd get another neuro then...because he is wrong.

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:11:43 PM)
Doesn't sound like that neuro knows what he's talking about

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:11:57 PM)
yes i have been all over and things are improving, he now has most of the services necessary, but we need to work on adding classroom modifications and accomodations to his IEP. Of course I still want him to get OT, but I need to get a private evaluation to support me.

Jill (ID=35) (Feb 13, 2001 9:12:14 PM)
How does your kids handle the series of test..?

terrie (ID=37) (Feb 13, 2001 9:12:22 PM)
My son seemed so distracted by the headphones, he also has Sensory integration disorder. I don't think her test could be accurate

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:12:23 PM)
My daughter likes them

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:12:53 PM)
terrie....I would tend to go by the aud. testing....how long was the testing, what kinds of tests did they do?

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:13:32 PM)
What about re-testing terrie?

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:13:44 PM)
My son is complaining about his headphones for his assistive listening device, the teacher observed that he puts them behind his ears ect.

terrie (ID=37) (Feb 13, 2001 9:13:49 PM)
she did testing two different times. She had him saying the sounds he heard, and saying when he heard different sounds etc

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:14:34 PM)
He isn't utilizing them and we only have them for a three month trial period.

terrie (ID=37) (Feb 13, 2001 9:14:39 PM)
She said that he did poorly on the whole test and that most CAPD children do poorly on only parts of the test

terrie (ID=37) (Feb 13, 2001 9:15:06 PM)
That is what I will do, have him tested again.

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:15:51 PM)
terrie...I don't know how true that is. My son did good some parts, and horrible on others, and so-so with other parts. Yes, I would have him re tested.

Diane (ID=39) (Feb 13, 2001 9:15:52 PM)
(This user has entered CAPD: From the Heart) (IP = 172.132.141.35)

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:15:54 PM)
Be sure that whoever you use is knowledgable about CAPD, you may want references from others who used them to be sure they are good.

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:16:26 PM)
Right on Rose...make sure that the aud. is knowledgable in APD...a must!

Diane (ID=39) (Feb 13, 2001 9:16:43 PM)
I got booted I've about had it with AOL

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:17:33 PM)
Diane...there was some booting off this AM too.....UG!

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:17:33 PM)
Diane I use Aol but I piggy back it on top of Prodigy, I don't have the problems I had in the past when signing on through aol.

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:18:00 PM)
Now I sign on through prodigy and then enter aol.

Diane (ID=39) (Feb 13, 2001 9:18:29 PM)
I am going to try and see an audiologist from the university childrens hospital, do you think this is a good choice?

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:18:34 PM)
i just like the format of AOL and didn't want to give it up.

Diane (ID=39) (Feb 13, 2001 9:19:21 PM)
I got his name from another CAPD parent site

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:19:47 PM)
Diane..if the aud you're going to see is knowledgable about APD, you should be ok. Call up and ask the Dr. some questions....

Diane (ID=39) (Feb 13, 2001 9:20:06 PM)
what ?? deb

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:21:35 PM)
Ahhh...if you got his name from the site, he must be ok! *L* Ask him what his model of APD is...once the results are in, will he sit down with you to go over the best form of remediation for your child? What tests will he perform, and why?

Diane (ID=39) (Feb 13, 2001 9:21:45 PM)
the SLP at school acts like she is totally ignorant of APD

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:22:12 PM)
Mine didn't know about it either Diane, but learned a lot since she tested Krystie and talking to me

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:23:05 PM)
Mine too, he was recommended to use a program such as foast forward or earbotics, but the school uses neither. The program they have is only for young students and they keep avoiding getting an older version.

Diane (ID=39) (Feb 13, 2001 9:23:10 PM)
I asked her about testing and what the district did and she gave me a brochure on the SCAN test and that was it

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:23:41 PM)
Diane...she may very well be! My sons SLP doesn't know a lot about it either. I gave Debbie, our wonderful hostess, a copy of a info pamplet on APD, and Travis, and how the APD affects HIM...it should be around the site at some point to help other parents as well. I gave a copy to EVERYONE who deals with him!

Diane (ID=39) (Feb 13, 2001 9:24:07 PM)
We use "Earobics in our district and I have it here at home too

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:24:12 PM)
AT least my school speech therapist is helpful and accepting, if only the rest of the school staff were I would have no problems. She was hoping my son would help her get a program for older children.

Diane (ID=39) (Feb 13, 2001 9:24:54 PM)
and it has helped my son considerably

Carol (ID=30) (Feb 13, 2001 9:24:57 PM)
I have to go. Goodnight and talk to you next week.

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:25:03 PM)
She isn't very knowledgable about APD, but has a child with disabilties so she understands.

Diane (ID=39) (Feb 13, 2001 9:25:16 PM)
Night Carol have a good week

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:25:27 PM)
Diane did you have to purchase the version for home?

Jill (ID=35) (Feb 13, 2001 9:25:38 PM)
I need to go have a great evening Maybe talk to you later or next week..need to feed the boys and homework isn't moving fast enough tonight..Happy Valentines Day

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:25:49 PM)
Our Earobics at shool is defective....we're getting a nre one. Diane...do you have the home version, or the school version at home? Debbie and I just went to an Earobics presentation a week ago. We were going to maybe get the school version for home, because of the ability to track the childs progress.

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:26:13 PM)
Night Jill....see you next week I hope!

Diane (ID=39) (Feb 13, 2001 9:26:17 PM)
my son's resource room teacher has been soooooo good for my son I wish that everyone involved had her motivation

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:26:43 PM)
I was thinking of purchasing the home version was wondering about the cost and how well it works.

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:27:05 PM)
My son's resource room teacher does great with his reading.

deb (ID=31) (Feb 13, 2001 9:27:14 PM)
Rose...the home version is $60.00....the school version is $300.00

Rose4x (ID=36) (Feb 13, 2001 9:27:21 PM)
not much help with other areas.

The only thing with the home version, is you don't have the tracking ability. Do you mind not having that?

I'll have to try it, I figure it can't hurt and 60.00 isn't much. Anyway I am glad I made it but I have to go, I have to help my son study for a math test .
