"Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity." (1 Timothy 4:12 NIV)
Pauls instructions to Timothy point out an important fact. Youth is important and not to be looked down upon. Youth can set an example.
In secular music, children have led the way many times. Since the fifties with Frankie Lymon, to the sixties with the Beach Boys, to the seventies with the Jackson Five, to the eighties with New Kids on the Block, and to the nineties with Hanson, youth bands have grabbed the listening publics ear.
Christian music's youngest band, Squirt continues the tradition of youth led bands and believes very strongly in Paul's call to be an example to other Christians. Beyond this, the members of Squirt have a huge desire to share the Gospel message with other children and adults alike.
A desire to minister is not the only strong point of the band. With the three members being 11 and 13 years old, and being competent musicians and vocalists, Squirt just may be one of the youngest rock and roll groups ever.
Amazingly, drummer/vocalist Jordan Dickerson has been pounding away since infancy. He received his first snare drum when he was six months old, his first drum set when he was two and began taking lessons when he was three years old. At age five, Jordan began playing in his children's church worship band. That is where he felt the Lord's calling to use his talents to share the Gospel. "We always knew that the Lord gave me the gift of drumming. We knew the Lord had a calling on our gifts and that we were supposed to use those gifts to witness to others."
It was some time before Squirt found the right bass player for their ministry-minded musical endeavors. The band auditioned 13 year old Matt Smith, who was definitely an answer to prayer. This young Nashvillian whose dad began playing in a band at the age of 14 himself, actually switched from guitar to bass to fill the Squirt need.
Once Jordan and Matt met, they knew that the Lord had brought them together for good. Now, all Squirt needed was a lead guitarist. On the recommendation of Matt, Squirt auditioned Chris Fewell, Matt's best friend since kindergarten. A phenomenal young player himself, Chris turned out to be the missing piece of the puzzle. Though Chris has only been playing for a few years, his talent and heart to serve the Lord places him years beyond many accomplished musicians.
Jordan, Matt and Chris are not the only members of Squirt though. There is still an honorary. four-footed, cuddly and furry friend to be mentioned: a five year old Chow named Duke who is draped in a red Squirt soft drink t-shirt in the bands enhanced CD video.
While the band and the dog enjoy Squirt soda, the guys in the band have their absolute favorite foods. While Matt claims his favorite is, "Sesame Chicken," Chris chimes in with "unagi" (that's sushi with eel and rice), Jordan responds with a typical 11 year olds response or, "Yuck -- my favorite food is my mom's tacos."
And while the food and music may be important to the band, the message is most crucial to them. "Kids don't have to be adults to find out their purpose," reports Jordan. "They should get out there and minister to their friends. They shouldn't be ashamed of their faith."
