is an american dance, introduced in 1913 by Harry Fox (Bio) a vaudevillian, who first danced it at the New York Theatre with the Dolly Sisters. The dance was a series of 'Trotting Steps' done to rag time music and was called 'Fox's Trot', later became 'Fox Trot' and has since become and remains the all american favorite 'get acquainted with ballroom dancing' basic and is a standard staple at international competitions.
The basic timing of the Foxtrot is 4/4. The downbeat occurs on the 1st beat of the measure. The music rises in a crescendo from the 1st to the 4th beats, diminishing halfway through the 4th beat. Fox Trots have a general range of 28 to 34 measures per minute, with 30 to 33 measures per minute it being the best for social dancing.
