On March 5, 1999, Pensacola Ice Pilot forward Etienne Beaudry announced at a press conference at the Pensacola Civic Center that he had been diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia. Already an unfortunate year, Etienne had suffered other injuries since returning to the team at the beginning of the season following a trade with the Richmond Renegades.
