R.L. Dukes Memories of Dinsmore Elementary

I started to school at Dinsmore Elementary in September 1948 at the age of five.  A Park was build on the site of the Old School.  It is called Dinsmore Park.  It is located at the corner of Old Kinds Road and Macklin Street.
    I am trying to remember what grade I was in when the new school was finished.    I think that I attended fifth thru the seventh grades in the new school so that would make it 1952 when the school was finsihed.
    I wish I could remember some of the teachers names.  Let me try - the Principal at the old school was Mr Snyder, a one armed man who prided himself on being able to spank really well even though he had only one arm.  I never had the occasion to find out.
    The Principal at the new school, if I can remember had an unusual first name - I think it was "Welcome" but I can't remember his last name.  He later bacame the principal of Paxon Sr. Hi.
    The teacher that stands out in my mind was the fourth grade teacher.  I think her name was Sofie or something like that.
    One good memory from the Dinsmsore Elementary days was when Parrott's Dairy would send the big containers of orange juice and we would all get free orange juice.
    Another good memory were the Halloween Carnivals - they were fun with all the booths and candy apples.
    Below are a couple of pictures of the new school.  If anyone that happens upon this page has a picture of the old school, I would greatly apreciate a copy to post on this page.

Harry Mills Memories of Dinsmore Elementary

 I went to Dinsmore Elementary
School from September 1943 until June 1950. My teachers were : Mrs.
Coursey, 1st grade; Mrs. Barker, 2nd grade; Mrs. Long, 3rd grade;
Mrs. Soto (this is the same teacher you had for fourth grade, I think.),
4th grade; Mrs. Bledsoe, 5th grade; Mrs. Holten, 6th grade; and Mr.
Becker, 7th grade. I then went to Kirby-Smith Jr. High for the 8th
and 9th grades; then to Andrew Jackson where I graduated in 1955.
