Epilogue

The Moon Is Mine

Graham leaned forward in his chair, disbelief engulfing him. His eyes wide, he stared at this beautiful girl in the chair across from him. She hadn’t moved from her curled up position for the past two hours, and yet the emotion of her story had been enough to alter the position of the world. He swallowed hard and blinked. "Is that the whole story?" Chloe nodded, and bowed her head. She’d stopped crying a little over half an hour ago, but the pain in her heart hadn’t even lessened. "Pretty much."

Graham took a deep breath and fell backwards in his chair. An absolute silence closed around the room, and the clock continued to tick on the wall. In all his years of psychiatric training, he’d never come across a situation anything like this, and he was unaware of how to handle it.

What do I tell this girl? he thought frantically.

Chloe glanced up through her eyelashes, her eyes brimming with fresh tears. She hated Graham. Hated him for taking away her enclosure, stripping her of her deepest secret. She glared at the young psychologist, and wrapped her arms more tightly around her knees. "Can I go now?" she asked stonily.

Graham shook his head. He stood up and walked around the desk, kneeling down beside Chloe. Looking up into her eyes, he concentrated to see past her stony glare. "Chloe," he said gently. He grasped her hands.Chloe’s tears spilled over, and she wiped them away impatiently.

"I want to leave," she said, pulling on her wrists.

Graham inched forward. He knew what was coming. "Do you really want to leave?"

Chloe stared at him, the pain in her heart reflecting in her blue eyes. "Yes," she said icily.

"Really?"

Chloe was afraid. With tears streaming down her face, she bowed her head once again.

Graham sighed. "Stop blocking the sun, Chloe," he whispered.

"It’s OK."

Chloe gasped. How did he know? she thought frantically. All the same, she felt a weight lift off her shoulders. "What did you say?" she whispered hoarsely.

Graham knew he’d hit a nerve. "Stop blocking the sun," he repeated. "Chloe, I know that you’re trying to hold onto Nick. And I’m not going to tell you to let him go. I’m not going to tell you that he doesn’t exist, because he does. He might not be Nick Carter, but he IS out there, do you understand? And you will find him, if you stop blocking the sun."

A deep sob wracked Chloe’s body, and she shuddered in the sudden coldness of the room. "How do I do that?" she asked, fearful of the answer.

Graham stood up and walked to the full length mirror on the back of the door. "Come here, Chloe," he commanded.

Chloe stood up, and managed to make her way over to the mirror. "Look at yourself."

Chloe stared hard at her reflection. The girl in the mirror had blonde hair all about her head, bright blue eyes, bloodshot. Her smooth complexion shone with freshly fallen tears, and her clothes hung limply on her frail body. Chloe cringed.

"You’re beautiful," Graham whispered, touching her shoulders.

"Can you see that?"

Chloe shook her head, and closed her eyes. She hated her appearance, hated what she stood for.

"Open your eyes, Chloe," Graham ordered.

Chloe shook her head violently. "I don’t want to."

"Do you want to get better?"

Chloe began to shake. "I want my Nick back," she whispered, her voice trembling.

Graham shook his head. "No you don’t," he replied simply.

Chloe spun around. "What do you mean?" she hissed. "Of COURSE I want him back, he’s all I want."

Graham stood watching her. "What you want back is the feeling that Nick gave you. You want that freedom and security all in one that no one else could give you. You want that smile that he gave you. You don’t want him, you want the IMAGE of him."

Chloe’s eyes widened. "Omigod," she whispered, turning her back to Graham. She faced the mirror, and the reflection of herself.

The girl in the mirror was smiling. It was almost as though the sun was shining behind her eyes, and that the cloud that had blocked it for so long had been lifted.

As Chloe continued to stare at herself in the mirror, the image of the man behind her disappeared. For a moment, Chloe stood alone in the room.

"Baby, can you see me?"

As Chloe continued to stare into the mirror, Nick appeared behind her. He stepped closed, wrapped his arms around her waist. His Gravity cologne surrounded her.

Chloe gasped, and went mute. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words could be formed.

Nick shook his head slowly, and turned her shoulders to face him. He placed his index finger over her lips. "Shhh," he whispered. "No words." He leaned in, caressed her cheek. "I live in your heart, baby, remember?"

Chloe nodded, her eyes brimming with new tears. "All you have to do is find me."

Nick leaned in, kissed her one last time, and stepped back. With one last sheepish grin, he disappeared. But he hadn’t left Chloe alone. She realized then, that she had never been alone, and never would be. Her baby was there, he lived in her heart.
